Text of email received accompanying cover drawing from Sarah Breeze.

I am emailing over to you a drawing that my fiancé , Jamie Smith drew of The Refail Presbyterian Chapel which I thought you might like to use as a cover picture or illustration for a future Berriew newsletter.

Jamie and I are getting married there at the end of August 2021 and having an Afternoon Tea reception at The Assembly Room afterwards, following in the footsteps of my grandparents, Flora and Wyndham Edwards who were married there on 7th March 1953. Jamie is a talented craftsman, carpenter, handy man and illustrator; in many ways similar to my grandad Wyndham. We know how much grandad loved Berriew, and The Refail and Glanfa, his home, and since his passing which we are all still deeply mourning, we wanted a way to feel close and connected to him, and what with Covid and weddings being the way they are at the moment we thought The Refail Chapel and Assembly Room would be a fitting tribute to him.

He was a regular reader of the newsletter and I know how delighted he would be to see The Refail Chapel drawn by Jamie make the Berriew newsletter. So if you are able to use this at some point we would be thrilled.

Many thanks Sara Breeze (soon to be Smith)

We thank Sarah and Jamie for sending the drawing and the story and we wish them all the best for the

future as Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

ALL DETAILS SUBJECT TO CHANGE as the Covid-19 situation demands.

Like our Facebook - Pentre Llifior Methodist Chapel - page to be kept up-to-date

WE ARE OPEN FOR VISITORS - every Wednesday & Thursday afternoon, 2pm - 4.30pm

We hope you all enjoyed receiving a copy of our new chapel leaflet in last month's newsletter and

reading of the local connections including, Catharine Hollins, a Berriew lass who married Rev. James Gill, one of

our founders. Now that we have re-opened we have had a few visitors come along to absorb the fabulous

heritage and experience the "feel" of the place. Somehow entry into the chapel seems to affect people in all sorts

of ways - both those with faith and those without - it really is extraordinary. Even the meter reader commented

"Wow - I wasn't expecting this!". If you haven't yet paid us a visit (and let's face it, many of us don't visit what's

literally on our doorstep) or if you're interested in helping us create a memorable experience for our visitors, do

pop along during opening times for a chat. Likewise, if you are the organiser of a small group and think your

members might like a visit we can accommodate you (by prior arrangement) outside our normal opening times.

Organised visits usually involve a short presentation (approx. 40mins) with tea/coffee and biscuits or light

refreshments as required. (There is no charge for this but any donations to help cover costs are gratefully received.) If any group

members have hearing difficulties, we can provide assistance and the chapel is suitable for disabled visitors also,

so please do contact Andrew or myself with any enquiries.

Our worship details for August are as follows, please also note the advanced notice of the date of our Harvest

Celebration Weekend (full details in the September issue). All worship commences at 2.30pm and refreshments follow

at approx 3.30pm in the Preachers Stable. ALL are welcome to join us either or both.

1st - All Age Cell Group (informal worship led by our Worship Leaders which includes singing, prayers

and discussion of the chosen reading)

8th - Rev. Jacquie Evans - Holy Communion (partaking of communion is not compulsory at this service)

15th - AACG

22nd - Mr John Harbron

29th - AACG DATE FOR YOUR DIARY: Harvest Celebration weekend - 25th & 26th September

We continue to publish weekly home worship sheets and a monthly short recorded service (approx 30 mins) for those unable

to attend or who may prefer individual worship in their own homes. Please visit www.wbhmethodists.org.uk , and follow

the "Latest News" link. If you would like to attend chapel but have no transport, please let us know and we will try to assist

when we can.

Regular readers will know how much I enjoy my early morning walks at 6am and it's wonderful that these are now

taking place in daylight allowing me to see where I'm going - country lanes are very dark in the winter!!

Thankfully my eyesight is such that I can appreciate the countryside around me. Sight can be different for

each one of us and especially for animals and insects. For example, bees have 3 photoreceptors like us

humans BUT whereas we see in red, blue and green, bees see in blue, green and ultraviolet light. This

means they view things very differently to us. A flower we see as red they will see as a completely different

colour altogether. They are also extremely good at distinguishing between light and dark and this makes them

exceptional at seeing the edges of things such as leaves or petals.

Could this difference in vision be translated into how each of us might "see faith"? Some seeing it very clearly,

some seeing it but not quite so easily and some not seeing it at all? Maybe there are those who would like to

"see (explore) faith" but are confused as it's all a bit blurry as to what it's all about? One way to explore further and

see a little "clearer" might be to attend an Alpha Course* - we at Pentre Llifior are hoping to be able to offer

access to such a course early in 2022. Further details will be published later in the year so do keep an eye on the

newsletter here or on our Facebook page.

Page 5: BERRIEW NEWSLETTER

Finally, if Berriew Show goes ahead we have booked a small stand there to promote visits and we look forward to

seeing you. Come along to say Hi - we will have colouring sheets and simple crafts for the children, and of course,

we shall be praying for fine weather and lots and lots of visitors.

We are hoping to be able to hold services each Sunday in St Beuno's during August,

however since Steve Willson moved to Cardiff we are one priest short in the Mission

The Old School

At a meeting of the trustees of Berriew Old School Charity held March 13th 2021, the trustees

unanimously agreed that in view of uncertainty regarding the future, the property should be disposed of

and the proceeds of sale and other funds be transferred to a new Church Fund. This to enable a

sympathetic upgrade in the Church to include kitchen facilities to encourage use by others including a

children’s area.

It must be appreciated that this will be a relatively long-winded process and the Old School Charity

trustees must adhere to the appropriate requirements.

Hugh Tombs

On behalf of the Trustees.

Berriew Show 2021

Against the background of ongoing uncertainty, The Berriew Show Committee met on July 20th to make a decision about whether to run this year’s show. It was decided to delay making a final decision until the 8th August, when we sincerely hope the position will be clearer. We appreciate this makes it difficult for people to plan, especially our many excellent stall holders, sponsors, equipment and service providers. However, we feel that it is in the best interests of the local community that we make the right decision, and expect to do this in just over three weeks time. If you have any views you would like to share, please contact [email protected] Best wishes, Wayne Jones, Chairman

The Berriew YFC ‘Talking Bench’

Berriew YFC were tasked with creating a 'Talking Bench' for our local community. The competition was

proposed by PAVO Powys Befriending Service. The idea of the bench was to create a space for people to

sit, have a chat with someone and be known as ‘Our Local Talking Bench’. The aim is to try and help

overcome loneliness and isolation, help improve mental health for all ages and be a community focal

point, where individuals can meet on a regular basis.

We have situated the bench next to the famous Berriew Bridge. It’s on the same pavement as the Bus

Stop (travelling Newtown way) and is tucked away making enough room for prams and wheelchairs.

The bench was designed and crafted by one of our very talented members, Alfie Taylor. Alfie is only 14

years old but loves carrying out DIY projects and as you will see is very good at it! Berriew YFC would

like to thank Alfie for the work and hours he has put in to creating the bench.

We would like to encourage the community to go to the bench, have a conversation with fellow residents

and enjoy the sounds of our beautiful village. You will notice that the bench also holds information for

local support that was provided by PAVO. If anyone does seek help or needs someone to talk to, visit the

bench and have a look at the information given. On behalf of Berriew YFC, we wish the community all

the best with coming out the other side of this pandemic. Please remember - you are not alone! The young

farmers look forward to getting back to some normality.

NATIONAL GARDEN SCHEME: POWYS GARDENS OPEN FOR CHARITY

August & September 2021 Over the last few weeks I have had the opportunity to visit some of the gardens that have opened for The National Garden Scheme. All of them have varied in style and design but you can’t help to not be inspired by either a planting combination, a particular feature or just the location of the garden. On a cold

wet day in June we met lots of lovely people at Claire Austin’s garden in Sarn. Visitors had travelled for miles to visit, Cardiff, Shropshire, Cheshire and Oldham to name a few of the places they had come from. Claire sells her plants online and opens her own garden one day a year for the NGS, she raised £2,500 through ticket sales. A fantastic amount. Closer to home and in warm sunshine, friends and ‘neighbours’ had an amazing turnout to their hillside garden that is now mainly given over to wildflower meadows and wildlife ponds. It is not your typical garden but what a joy to see all the pollinating insects, the dragon flies and birds that now visit the garden in huge numbers too. Just a small patch of wildness in any garden is so beneficial to our wildlife. We don’t have a lawn anymore but do have some grass paths, even they have been kept longer this year as the bumble bees have just loved the clover that has invaded the grass. We also have a colony of some type of bumble bee that have taken up residence in one of our bird boxes, there is a constant buzz from the box, but I’ve been unable to identify what type of bee it is. Our tiny little pond also provides water for the honeybees, particularly as the level of the water has dropped and there are more mossy mounds for them to drink from. Once again we are on the look- out for new gardens, so do get in touch if you think your garden might inspire others. It doesn’t have to be big or designer landscaped, just a small area that provides interest for others to enjoy. Members of our team will gladly visit and explain the process for opening and the various opening options. Please contact Susan Paynton, North Powys County Organiser on 01686 650531 0r [email protected]

If you are not sure about opening for the public, you might like to take part in our Great British Garden Party 4th – 12th September. The idea is to invite friends to your garden for coffee, lunch, afternoon tea or even a BBQ and ask them to make a donation to our nursing charities, who are in such desperate need of funds right now. This event is being supported by Mary Berry and details of how to get involved are on the website at ngs.org.uk

There are still plenty of gardens to visit in August and September, here are the ones in the north of the county.

Please not the Berriew Newsletter only prints details of gardens open within a 12/15 mile radius of Berriew.

August: Berriew Village Gardens, SY21 8BA Sun 8th Aug 12.00-5.00 Teas

September: Little House, Llandinam, Newtown SY17 5BH Sat 4th Sept 1.00-4.30 Teas Vaynor Park, Berriew, Welshpool, SY21 8QE Sun 5th Sept 12.00-5.00 Teas Do look at our website for details of the gardens that are open a little further afield. We have all been amazed at the number of visitors to our gardens this year, it is clearly an activity that people are feeling is safe to do and the positive feedback supports this. If you do get a chance to visit our garden, please say hello and let me know where you saw this article. Many thanks as always,
