Berriew young folks.

We meet in the Old school

Teen Seekers [ Primary 6 and older]

We continue to meet on the last Sunday of each month. Members are being encouraged to express

their wishes and concerns - and to help to arrange events. Their fund-raising for Cancer research

and Children’s Liver disease has reached - £160.00. Thank you for those who have supported. They

are now dreaming up their next effort. We would love more members - why not give us a try? Our

last meeting for this school year will be 28th

June. But watch out for our fund-raisers. We shall post

information on the church gates.

Little Saints [Primary aged folks]

Our ‘Pentecost’ morning on 16th

May was a little thin on the ground - some folks had other events -

and others weren’t too well. But we made a lovely poster to display in church for Pentecost and

some windmills and wind tunnels.

Because school is holding their centenary event at the end of the summer term - we have moved our

next meeting to the Saturday when term finishes - Sat 18th

July - our usual time of 10 until 12.15.

See you then.

Summer event; For all our young folks.

Our annual summer event will take place during the week of 24th

- 28th

August; News of actual day

and events in July Newsletter. But it will include our Sports, games and crafts; beginning at 10.00 -

bring a packed lunch - and finishing at 3.00pm

Choir

Congratulations to our choristers who have recently celebrated their 80th

birthdays - It’s good that

our ‘oldies’ remain committed to leading our worship.

Come on you younger folks - we need your support too!

Practices continue in the Old school on Wednesdays at 6.00pm

And………………… we share a cup of tea and a biscuit at the end of a good hour’s singing……..

and sharing a lot of fun.

Berriew W.I. May Meeting.

Sue Usmar, the President, welcomed everyone to the May meeting. Congratulations

were given to Lilian Dawson, Ann Dixon and Sue Minikin who did well in the W.I. Show

at Carno. Lilian had a first and a second for a decorated tile and a flower painting,

Sue had a third for trinket box and Ann had second for a photograph. The other

entrants were also congratulated for their effort and in some cases just missing a

place.

Gill is feeling very excited about her trip to the W.I. Centenary Garden Party at

Buckingham Palace. We all wished her well and look forward to hearing all about her

experience.

We were introduced to the speaker for the evening by Sue and this was Eva

Berdstoff from Welshpool Museum. Her subject was the famous Welsh icon, Laura

Ashley. She began by giving us a potted history of her life and her strong association

with Wales, and especially Carno the home of the large factory. We were delighted

to try on the many garments that Eva had brought with her. It was lovely reminisce

about the Laura Ashley long flowing clothes we wore years ago and how fashion has

changed since the Laura Ashley clothes of the 60s and 70s. Eva then persuaded us to

try our hand at printing cotton bags which ended up quite colourful. This was a very

lively entertaining evening and Eva was thanked by Deb Pyke who told us she has loads

of Laura Ashley curtains which have been used in many vicarages!

The quiz was to name ten pictures of Welsh icons and this had joint winners, Ann

Rees and Ann Dixon with Jo Carrick third.

Tea was served by Ferol Richards and Jo Carrick. The raffle was won by Denise Hall.

Next month we have a garden visit which is on FRIDAY 5th JUNE. We are going to

Cwm Wig Gardens in Dolfor. Everyone meet in the village at 5.15pm. We hope to have

a meal at the Talbot afterwards.

In July we return to the Centre, Wednesday 1st July at 7.15p.m., when the speaker

for the evening is Edward Parry who will talk about French prisoners of war in

Montgomeryshire . Everyone is welcome to join us for these evenings.

Recipe

Lemon Creams with Caramelised Pears – serves 4

For the creams: 400ml whipping cream, 100g caster sugar, 75ml lemon juice.

For the pears: 3 ripe pears peeled and quartered, 140g caster sugar, 3tbsp brandy.

Shortbread to serve.

Heat the cream, but do not boil. Scatter in the sugar, bring to the boil and simmer for

3-4 minutes. Remove from the heat and add the lemon juice. Strain through a fine

sieve into a jug and divide between 4 ramekins – filling them to ¾ full. Leave to set

in the fridge overnight. (The creams can be prepared up to 3 days in advance and left

in the fridge until ready to serve).

For the pears – tip the sugar and a little water into a frying pan and boil without

stirring until it starts to caramelise. Add the pears, cook for about 4 minutes until just

starting to soften, then remove from the heat and add the brandy. Leave to cool.

To serve, arrange wedges of pear on top of each cream and drizzle with a little of the

syrup.

Serve with shortbread.

Val Wallis.

The Tom Cat Spot June is here. Very early potatoes, purple sprouting broccoli, radish and lettuce. As if veg, isn't

enough, bluebells are in abundance.

Of course sporting events to savour, The Derby and The Oaks, Wimbledon, Test Match Cricket and

the local Eagle Rally.

Two sad departures recently, Dave and Rick from The Lion, and Berriew F.C. relegated. Whilst

Dave and Rick won't bounce back, I'm sure Berriew will as there's a lot of talent in the team.

It is good to see The Lion open again and very best wishes to Colin and Wendy, and I'm sure they

will do very well there.

So, back to Berriew Infants School in the 1960's and the Head Teacher in question Mrs. Anthony.

She was ably supported by Mrs. Williams and later Mrs. Evans.

It was good to see a locally owned horse win at Towcester recently. Congratulations to Mr. Peter

Woolley and Pennant Dancer.

In the late 1970's Berriew had two horses in training, a striking grey – Love Rocket and a strong

bay – Welsh Hero. Who trained them and what was the name of the larger than life jockey who rode

them and later became a colourful trainer?

Until next month, keep smiling. Tom Cat.

Note from the Treasurer

The committee is always grateful for all donations and we hope to use them

efficiently and economically to keep up the news service to Berriew. We would like

to thank Mrs. Anderson, Mr. & Mrs. Powell, Mr. H. Schmeinck, Mrs. Young, Berriew

Show Committee, Joyce Gittins and Miss. Brown for their donations.
