Reality is setting in and I’m not happy about it at all. Fall is here with less daylight for riding and the time change just around the corner. What’s really a bummer is that there’s one less summer before I have no more left. I know, how morbid. lol The Reading 120 pro bike race was another success and the weather actually cooperated this year. Hopefully you had a chance to see some of it. Not only is it great to watch the riders, it’s also cool to run into riders from the past that you haven’t seen in years. It’s amazing how time flies but nevertheless, once a rider, always a rider. Wow, the Sunset at the Pagoda actually had a smidge of sunset this year. The clouds made it a challenge but more than 50 people came up to enjoy the food and drinks. There is little doubt that this event will be staying on our yearly calendar. Next up for the club, is Cranksgiving. Cranksgiving Ride, Saturday, October 29 th at Trooper Thorns, club riders and others from around the area will be out in force to pedal from store to store buying groceries for those in need here in Berks County. Jim Borden will again be coordinating the event. Mark your calendar to either do the ride or volunteer to help put on the event. If you want to help out, email Jim at [email protected]. Let’s help families in need this holiday season by showing our support to the Berks County Food Bank. Last year, we raised 1999lbs of food. I don’t know about you but there’s something not quite right about that number. The BCBC Shoo Fly Classic on Sept 24 th was a huge success. We had over 200 registered riders and actually had almost 70 sign up that morning despite the crappy weather. The course was marked great by Gary R. Registration was under control as usual with Marge, Wendy, Ann, Karen and Marce keeping things in order while Diane pushed the sale of socks and old Shoo Fly shirts. The check points were great, the sweep and Sag did their job and thanks to Tom’s wife Trish and daughter Jessica who took care of the food for most of the day. It was a great club effort with more than 20 members volunteering to make it another fine event. One thing I thought was pretty cool was that a lot of club members who did ride wore their BCBC jerseys. It’s was great to see them come into the parking lot in groups while many were wearing the club clothing after. Even our 60 mile sweep guys, Rick D, Mike T and Jim H were sporting BCBC jerseys so thanks to them for styling while clearing the course. BCBC was well represented throughout the day in a positive way so thanks to all for being proud members. There is NOOO WAY it could be successful without your help. Finally, special thanks to Tom Reppert for being the coordinator of the event, doing a great job even though he may have been considering therapy the week of the event from all the logistics and questions being thrown his way. Remember Tom, it’s not a death sentence so anytime the Shoo Fly therapy bills become too much, ask to be paroled. ;) (Continued on Page 3) The President’s Spin Berks County Bicycle Club FOUNDED 1973 OCTOBER 2016 Volume 43 Issue 10 www.berksbicycle.com MEMBER OF BAC, LAB, SRGA, RAILS-TO-TRAILS CONSERVANCY

Club clothing order. Last chance to order any long sleeve clothing like long sleeve tech shirts, tees, sweatshirt or hoodie, I will be placing an order on Oct 6th. Send me an email asap at [email protected]. You can see the prices in the newsletter but essentially, you’re paying only for the cost of the shirt as the club is picking up the screen printing charges. Just a thought about pulling in the pack: Throwing this out there to those who find themselves pulling the group and to the next couple riders in line. First, when pulling, don’t stay out there until your legs are ready to fall off because odds are, when you come off the front, you may actually fall off the back… Off the pack. And when pulling and you decide it’s time to come off the front, be sure to signal, then get out of line before slowing down or you can cause a definite jam up with the riders behind you. If you’re the second rider in line about to assume the front position, keep the pace steady as you transition or you could create gaps with the riders behind you because not everyone will be ready for a sudden increase in speed. One way to know that you’ve done this is that you’ll finish what you think is a good pull and turn around only to see no one is on your wheel. Ooops. Last but not least, for the 3rd rider about to move into the second position as these transitions are taking place, if the new front rider does transition to fast, in order to prevent the line from splitting apart, just hold the pace and slowly increase to try to close the gap. This will help to keep the line together. Finally, the forever reminder that the best way to know what’s going on with the club is by joining our club Facebook page. It’s pretty simple to do and it’s really great for ride updates. Just create a profile on Facebook and go to “Berks Bicycle” to join the page. The next club meeting will be Monday, October 10th at the Wyomissing Restaurant at 7pm. We’ll be talking about Cranksgiving, a club walleyball night and the Shoo Fly recap. Plus anything else club related. The meeting will last about 45 minutes and all are welcome. If you don’t already have one, you may want to invest in a red blinky light for the back of your bike as it’s getting dusky earlier these days. Butch

LAST ONE FOR 2016!

Oct 29 Western Berks Ramble 8 AM Conrad Weiser East Elementary 69 miles 3400 ft climbing The last adventure ride of the season will take us from Wernersville to the base of the Blue Mountains on rolling terrain. The ride goes thru Bethel then will head east using quiet roads at the base of the hills. The mid ride stop, at mile 34 will be in Shartlesville. Then the ride heads towards Centerport and towards the hill at Blush Marsh Lake. Save something for the climb up Reber’s Bridge Rd as we head back to the start at Conrad Weiser.

Free pair of socks to club members who ride. If you haven’t received yours see Butch to get them.

Tires for 2017 There have been several inquiries about tires. All have been sold for 2016, but now is the time to get the best deals for next year. I am

looking into options and I believe I will again be able to order Continental Gatorskin tires, both 23mm and 25 mm widths. The expected cost will be $5.00 more per tire ($40.00) than this year, but still a great savings. We will be doing a pre-order to determine if there is enough interest and how many tires we should order. Please contact me by November 10th if you are interested. ([email protected])

Seasoned Spokes outings are group rides of roughly 20 miles and take about 2 hours to complete. Some of the rides have a pre-post ride option that adds an extra 10 to 20 miles. These pre-post ride options are announced by email each week. Rides are rated 1, 2 or 3 with 3 being the hilliest and most difficult. Lunches are scheduled after some of the rides during the warmer months. Many of the riders are over 55, however anyone is welcome to participate. Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes before the start time with a bicycle in good condition, a bicycle helmet and anything you need to repair a flat tire.

For additional Seasoned Spokes information contact David Cruzan, 610-376-5048; [email protected]

Make sure you have a spare tube or patch kit and at least one water bottle. If weather conditions are questionable, the ride host may notify club members by posting a message on Facebook prior to the ride or make a decision at the starting location based on road conditions and weather forecasted at the time of the ride. SPECIAL RIDE DETAILS Special rides during the months will be highlighted in color. If you are hosting a special ride, please contact Newsletter Editor Wendy Davis or Ride Coordinator Alan Fineman before the 18th of each month to tell other club members about it. Did you have a great experience on a ride? Let us know and we’ll add pictures and stories about your ride!

What is Cranksgiving?? It’s a food drive done completely by bicycle!
