These one day events are great times for student leaders from different schools to work together, CF members encouraged to press on in their schools and for sharing the good news of Jesus.

PJ Rally (27 July ’19)

Several Christian Fellowships from Petaling Jaya schools came together for their annual PJ Rally. A total of 150 students attended the morning session and afternoon workshops and about 250 people attended the evangelistic night rally.

This annual rally serves to equip students, build bridges between the different CFs, and provide an avenue for the students to bring their non-Christian friends to hear the Gospel. This year, the theme was ‘Darkness to Light’, emphasising the transformation that comes from the Gospel.

In the afternoon workshops the students learnt from different speakers on topics of mental health, family issues, BGR, time management, apologetics, and purpose in life. At the night rally 7 people came to know Christ. The rally served its purpose in bringing together the Christian community around Petaling Jaya to serve and do God’s ministry together.

Penang Rally (29 June ’19)

We praise God that the Penang Rally was held at the Methodist Boys’ School, in conjunction with the Bible Knowledge 2019 quiz. The theme this year was ‘Awaken’, based on Acts 1-14.

There were about 270 participants, representing 20 schools. The SU staff - Kelly and Jun Yi were glad to have the opportunity to work with teachers and the student committee members from various schools in organizing this event. It was encouraging to witness all the support and passion from teachers and students dedicated to this event. May God be glorified!

The annual Subang Rally was held at the Full Gospel Tabernacle (Subang Jaya). Over 200 students signed up for the full day’s rally, which included a set of workshops. This year, the workshop topics were: Discovering Myself, God and Science and ‘Boy-Girl Relationships,’ conducted by our own Marianne Liaw.

During the morning session, YB Michelle Ng, state assemblywoman of Subang Jaya graced the event to share a few words to the students. The night rally was an open invitation, free-of-charge event that saw more than 400 students attend and many respond to the message. Praise God for another opportunity to see many drawn to Him!

In the months of July and August, Scripture Union had the privilege to be involved in 3 separate denominational youth Bible events which aimed at introducing youths to the wonderful truth that the entire Bible tells a unified story of God’s salvation for all mankind in Christ Jesus.

Methodist TRAC Youth Bible Project

20 participants from 16 to 25 years old came from various Methodist churches. We walked through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation using the theme of the Kingdom of God, and saw how the entire Bible is unified by that theme, and what that means for us in our Christian lives today. Overall, we were greatly encouraged by their eagerness to learn, and especially a joy to see some discover that God’s word was one unified narrative.

Anglican Diocesan Youth Council - The Grand Plan

There were about 40 participants, 13 to 21 years old from five Anglican Churches at this event. This time we walked the participants through God’s salvation plan throughout the entire Bible, using a mix of classroom setting, station games, and a large, immersive “life game” that culminated in a simulation of heaven and hell (respectively depending on choices made in the game). It was hard to tell who enjoyed themselves more- the participants or the facilitators.

We all came away blessed- either from what was learnt or from seeing young hearts appreciating God’s word in a whole new way.

Petaling Jaya Gospel Hall - God

There were 31 youths aged 11 to 19 from five Brethren churches. As in the Methodist event, the theme of the Kingdom was used. SU was invited to take a few of the sessions.

What was interesting was that the youths presented what they had learnt from the sessions to the whole church that Sunday morning. It was encouraging to see how the church fostered intergenerational relationships by not isolating this event as a “youth” event, but entrusted them to share what they had learnt, for the benefit of the entire church.

We were blessed to see young hearts opened to God through His word. Despite the general assumption that youths are increasingly disconnected from the Bible, here were groups of them showing a hunger for the Word and its importance to them. We pray and hope that this is merely the start of a lifelong love for God through his Word.

CHILDREN’S SPORTS CAMP

Partner with SU to run a Sports Camp, a fun experience for every child!

Sports is a common ground where we can make our first conversation and share Jesus amidst the fun and excitement. Sports is like a bridge connecting a church with its community. SU offers a recreational sports camp to children ages 7-12. The camp is packed with skill development, games and team talks as the children rotate through three sports. Coaches will foster team work among the children and build their confidence during each sports session. Throughout the camp, the children will learn responsibility, improve their social skills and make new friends.

Contact Jennifer Chew (Team Leader, Children’s Ministry) if you are interested in this avenue to reach kids.

Sports. One of the most used universal language throughout the world. Over the past few years, we have been able to use sports to reach out to community kids through our SU Sports Camp in partnership with churches. Apart from Malaysia, SU Canada has been actively running sports camp for the past two decades. Last June, we had the privilege to send two of our key volunteers, Siau See Yuan & Janice Sek to gain some experience running sports camp in Canada. They were involved in eight sports camps each over a ten week period.

Here are the excerpt from the interview we had with them after their SU Canada sports internship experience:

Question: How was your experience [interning with SU Canada]? What is your biggest highlight?

See Yuan: My biggest highlight is to see the kids having fun playing basketball. As I coached basketball most of the time, seeing them having fun playing basketball is my most memorable memory. To see a kid who is good at sport and yet also having good sportsmanship when they come together is just so beautiful. It is inspiring.

Janice: The biggest highlight was reflecting God`s love with the children throughout the five days of camp. It wasn’t so much of trying to change their behavior, but using our words to encourage one another. Even when we were working with the other interns, we encourage one another with our words. Another one of my biggest highlight was with a camper from China. Mandarin was the only language she could understand, and it wasn’t a coincidence that I was placed in the same small group as her. I shared my testimony and what Jesus did for her on the cross in Mandarin. On the fourth day of camp, she accepted Jesus into her life!

Question: What is one lesson from this experience that you took back home?

See Yuan: For me, it is definitely gospel integration over gospel injection. Throughout the sports camp, we had a time for sports and gospel sharing. Our idea is to reflect Christ throughout the sports camp and to involve Jesus in our sports. It’s not just a part of the day where you inject the gospel, inject Jesus, but it is your life, your whole ministry, the whole camp. I think that’s my biggest lesson.

Janice:My biggest lesson was trusting God. It wasn’t easy to say yes to the internship due to studies, financial problems or even my family’s support. But throughout the whole process, I can see how God provided a way. I remembered when we were doing the devotion together with

the other interns, we were talking about Jesus walking on water. Sometimes the failure is not that you will sink, the failure is that you don’t even dare to even step out of the boat to allow God to perform miracles in your life. I believe one of the miracles that God has been performing in my life is through this internship, to step out of my comfort zone, step out of Malaysia to go to Canada, where I had to travel about 24 hours just to be there. When I was there, I was thinking “Why am I here? They have so many people here. There are more Canadians who are more experienced with sports.” But I allowed God to use me, trusted Him that He brought me there for a purpose and kept my eyes focused on Jesus. I think that was what kept me going.

SUPA Camp (1-4 June 2019)

Teaching children can be a challenge. And today, faith formation in children is crucial for their continuing to follow Jesus when they are older.

So, it was very encouraging to have 64 eager participants involved in children ministry come for a full day training to learn creative ways to communicate the Bible to them.

The training was hosted by the City Community Church, Melaka. Participants came from various churches – Gateway Christian Fellowship, Calvary Life Assembly – and as far as Yong Peng and Johor Bharu.

The main objective was to equip the participants with the essentials of ministry to children and communicating creatively to them. The three sessions covered were:1. Know your call2. Know your method: Creative Communication & Lesson Preparation3. Creative memory verse & object lessons.

Many participants said that they had learnt lots of new things through the training to take back to their churches. This was very encouraging to the Children Ministry team, to see the willingness and eagerness of these teachers to learn for the betterment of their ministry in their church.

Campers had quality time with their friends, old and new ones. They learnt and grew in God’s love and Word. Some older kids grew in maturity and helped to guide and encourage the younger ones. All glory to God. - Edwin Lee (Melaka)

SUPA Camp through the eyes and experience of some of the volunteers who helped at camp.

I AM AMAZED at the enthusiastic young volunteers whom the children found so much fun to be with, coming from different backgrounds and formed friendships over the 4 days.I AM AMAZED when children shared and prayed in front of everybody, when they were given space to be creative and learnt to be independent. And they survived and thrived! I AM AMAZED at His protection through all the games and activities, the hike up the hill and wading through the stream. This is a camp that every child should experience before becoming a teen. - Ang Nyee Nyee (Johor Bahru)

I wanted to try out a different ministry, to serve the children. Through SUPA I enjoyed learning and facing challenges with the kids at camp. - Jessy Ku (Alor Setar)

Living in Jesus is the third book in the series of Bible study guides produced for youths, after Introducing Jesus (the Gospel of Mark) and Following Jesus (the Sermon on the Mount). This is a 15-lesson guide on the book of Philippians. The Apostle Paul’s life motto could probably be summed up in Philippians 1:21, “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” The Christian faith is more than just knowing some theology. It is a practical faith that is to be lived out. Paul shares with us what it means to live in Christ. Why he thought knowing Jesus surpasses everything and why he was so eager to proclaim the Gospel.
