Dear Reader,

Animal welfare is one of the big topics of our time. Politicians, especially, have taken up the cause of protecting both farm ani-mals and domestic pets. A list of the meas-ures planned by the EU government in the field of animal husbandry alone suggests that the position is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future. Even by 2015, over two dozen implementation measures and plans, implementing provisions, studies and reports are scheduled with the aim of ensuring more protection for animals in agriculture.

So livestock farmers will have to face new challenges in housing, breeding and health management. And animal nutrition will have to defend itself against the critical spirit of the times, too. “Modern” feedstuffs containing raw materials and targeted ac-tive substances suitable for each species are essential for healthy and thus produc-tive animals. But at the same time, farmers are businessmen who must keep an eye on costs in order to make a profit and secure their livelihood.

As we shall demonstrate impressively once again in this issue of BestFeed, the products from Berg + Schmidt have this double func-tionality. Let us convince you with

• Lecithinized BergaFat HPL-106 and its pos-itive effect on the energy metabolism of high-performance dairy cows;

• LodeStar CLA L50, that achieves higher dai-ly growth rates and better feed conversion in fattening pigs;

• More efficient trout production thanks to BergaPur deoiled lecithin;

In early lactation, high-performance dairy cows expend more energy on milk produc-tion than they can take in with their feed. The consequences of this energy deficit are metabolic disorders and health problems. The cow tries to make up for the shortage by mobilizing its own fat reserves to augment the supply. Fatty acids are released from the body fat and esterified into triglycerides in the liver. For further transportation in the blood they are packed with lipoproteins. This metabolic process requires lecithin, but in nearly half of all dairy cows the ani-mals’ own lecithin synthesis is inadequate. In such cases fat is not transported away as it should be, and the cow is threatened with fatty liver degeneration. Moreover, the physiological functions controlled by the liver are restricted.

With its lecithinized fat powders Ber-gaFat HPL-106 and Bergafat HTL-306, Berg+Schmidt supplies lecithin as well as the rumen bypass fat necessary for replen-ishing energy. Being an emulsifier, lecithin ensures better utilization of energy and nu-trients, and this can be especially beneficial in high-performance dairy cows with their rapid rate of passage through the digestive tract. At the same time lecithin supplies

components necessary for the formation of biological membranes, and these in turn are involved in protection of the liver and the fertility functions of metabolism.

To permit a comparison between leci-thin-free and lecithinized fat powders, BergaFat F-100 and BergaFat HPL 106 were tested in high lactating Holstein cows at Michigan State University. The animals were fed with a TMR based on maize silage, hay-lage, chopped lucerne hay, ground maize kernels, soybean hulls, soy meal and cotton seeds. The fat powders were added to the feed as 2 % of the dry matter. The most im-portant results are shown in the table.

Tab.: Effects of lecithin-free fat powder (F-100) and lecithinized fat powder (HPL-106) on performance and the fat content of the milk.

Whereas the protein and lactose content of the milk remained unchanged, the milk fat content increased considerably, by 3.4 per-cent, and with it the fat quantity (+2.7 %) and the daily FCM yield (+1.3% see figure).

ConclusionsAs the results show, lecithin has an addi-tional effect in dairy cows when compared with rumen bypass fat powder alone. The reasons for this may be better utilization of the nutrients or even improved liver function. BergaFat HPL-106 is therefore a promising alternative for supplying high- performance dairy cows with energy.

In pig fattening, over half of the production costs are for feed. So the qualitative compo-sition of the feed has a decisive effect on the farm’s operating income. The use of special fats in the form of conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs) – i.e. modified forms of linoleic acid (C18:2) – is therefore an interesting way of maximizing profitability.

Trials have demonstrated that the use of CLAs in the final stage of fattening from 70 to 120 kg influences the pigs’ fat metabo-lism in such a way that they realize their genetic potential better in respect of growth and carcass quality. In order to confirm the

Standardized test set-upAt the finishing stage from 70/75 to 120 kg, the feed additive was used at a dosage of 0.5 percent in comparison with an untreat-ed control group. Female pigs and castrated males were assigned to the two groups ran-domly in equal numbers: 261 to the control and 266 to the trial group. The animals were Danish hybrid piglets (DU x DL) from Den-mark and one farm of origin. The trial was carried out simultaneously in two housings of the same design, with manual regulation of the temperature and ventilation; it start-ed on 16 September 2011 and covered a fat-tening period of 100 days. Identical types of feed conforming to the RAM standard were offered to the two groups ad libitum in the form of pellets from an automatic dispens-er. From the start of the trial: RAM 2.2 with 12.6 MJ ME and 14 % raw protein and 0.8 % lysine, 0.5 % methionine + cystine, 0.6 % threonine, 0.7 % Ca and 0.5 % P.

Remarkable resultsIn the evaluation it was immediately no-ticeable that in the higher weight range more animals died in the control than in the trial group. The probable reason for this observation is that conjugated linoleic acids take some of the burden off the met-abolic system at the finishing stage. When the organism reduces fat deposition, more nutrients are available for growth and the formation of meat.

As with farm animals, genetic factors, stock management and feeding are the most important pillars of success in aquaculture too. Since over half of the production costs are for feed, this is a decisive element of profitability. The specific use of active sub- stances as feed additives to achieve in-creased weight gain and better feed con-version brings considerable benefits.

An effective feed additive already well known from agriculture is lecithin. Being an emulsifier, lecithin improves the di-gestibility of feed fats and fat-soluble vit- amins. It promotes the metabolism of fat between the liver and the tissues and also the exchange of substances between cells. Moreover, phospholipids are essential com-

More efficient aquaculture thanks to BergaPurThe use of BergaPur deoiled lecithin was found to boost the growth of trout.

ponents of somatic cells and therefore play an important role in the formation of brain and nerve cells, mucous membranes and the muscles.

BergaPur from Berg + Schmidt is a deoiled lecithin derived from the soy plant. A char-acteristic feature is its highly concentrated phospholipid complex of 97 % - three times that of conventional lecithin powders.

In order to demonstrate the efficacy of Ber-gaPur when used with fish, a feeding trial with rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) was carried out in cooperation with the fish feed producer Aller Aqua (DK). On a commer-cial fish farm in Denmark, 27,000 trout were subjected to a growth trial over a period of

56 days. 13,600 fish each were assigned to a control group and the trial group.

At the start of the trial the average weight of the fish was 125 g, corresponding to a stock weight of 1,700 g per group. Both groups re-ceived a standard trout feed produced by the company Aller Aqua and consisting of 27 % raw fat and 47.5 % raw protein.

07 | BestFeed 09/13 FISH

For the trial group, BergaPur (deoiled lec-ithin) was added to the feed at a concen-tration of 1.5 %, and 1.5 % fish oil was re-moved. Both groups were fed restrictively at 0.78 % of the biomass per day. At the end of the trial the groups were compared in respect of the most important performance parameters. Table 1 shows the results of this comparison.

The results are clear evidence of the su- periority of the trial group as compared to the control. In all the parameters, the fish that had received the added BergaPur per-formed 2 to 6 % better than those of the control (see Fig. 1).

The analysis shows that with the assumed use of 1,000 tons of trout feed, an addi-tional 55,565.5 kg more live weight can be produced through the administration of BergaPur. That represents an increase of 4.2 %.

ConclusionAs this study clearly shows, supplementa-tion of the feed with BergaPur improves the relevant performance parameters such as daily weight gain, specific growth rate and feed conversion. The efficiency of produc-tion can therefore be increased with Ber-gaPur and the costs thus reduced. Moreover, the fish in this trial were fed restrictively. Ad libitum feeding could well result in a great-er positive effect on growth performance through the addition of BergaPur.

Aquaculture is on the advance worldwideAccording to the FAO (2012), over half of the fish consumed are produced by aquaculture.

That is currently equivalent to about 52 million tonnes p.a., and a further rise is forecast.

Because of the steadily increasing demand and decreasing yields from fisheries, the produc-

tion volume will rise to an estimated 60 million tonnes in 2015.

BergaPur stands the test yet again! The results of recent practical trials show that the BergaPur deoiled lecithin complex greatly improves the relevant performance parameters in broiler fattening.

The positive effect of BergaPur on per-formance was to be demonstrated in a large-scale practical trial with 90,000 broil-ers. The trial was carried out in respect of the following criteria:

• The relevant performance parameters such as daily live weight increase, feed conversion (FCR) and carcass quality

• The health status of the birds• Feed quality, including the stability and

oil binding capacity of the pellets• Quality of the litter.

In the study, two trial groups of 22,500 broil-ers each were compared with two control groups of 22,500 broilers. The groups were housed separately. The conditions under which the birds were kept were identical in all the production halls. 45,000 trial birds and 45,000 controls were therefore avail- able for the evaluation.

For the trial groups, the normal commercial feed given to the controls was supplement-ed with BergaPur at a dosage of 1 kg per tonne of complete feed.

Enhanced performance, better healthFeed quality: The use of BergaPur was found to result in firmer pellets with less loss from abrasion. Noticeably better oil binding ca-pacity was also observed.

Performance parameters: Table 1 docu-ments the positive effect of BergaPur on live weight increase (+2.6 %) and a 3.1 % reduction of feed consumption per kg of meat produced. Special mention should be made of the absolute water consumption in the control and trial groups. In the two trial groups this was considerably less and resulted in a better water:feed ratio.

Litter quality: It was noticed throughout the feeding period that the litter in the two halls with the trial groups was much drier than in those where the two control groups were kept. On a scale of 1 (very dry) to 5 (very wet) the litter was in some cases rated as much as two grades wetter with the control birds.

Animal health: The footpads of the broilers in the trial groups tended to be healthier than in the controls. ConclusionThis extensive trial once again showed the positive effect of BergaPur on the efficiency of broiler production under practical con-ditions. Besides the most important per-formance criteria, the birds’ health and the quality of the pellets and litter improved considerably through the use of BergaPur. So the decision to use BergaPur is certainly worthwhile for both the feed manufacturer and the broiler fattener.

Pododermatitis is not unusualThe condition of the birds’ footpads is a good indicator of the health of fattening broilers. Be-

sides the climate in the housing, the quality of the litter is extremely important. The wetter the

litter, the more ammonia is released, and because of its caustic effect this softens the skin of the

footpads. As a result, lesions, necrosis and ulcerations of the pads develop, with correspond-

ing losses. A survey study proved that inflammation of the footpads is not unusual: it showed

that 5 to 71 % of the birds in 240 production units in various European countries suffered from

pododermatitis.

Mr. Ames, what can you tell us about NutriLinx as a company?

Al Ames: NutriLinx has existed since 2004 and distributes products for dairy farm-ing. With the assistance of three contract or commission staff we distribute feed addi-tives in the USA.

What products do you distribute?

Al Ames: We chiefly distribute products from European manufacturers for the whole of the dairy farming sector. They range from feed ingredients like flavourings to silage additives. But our biggest product is now BergaFat from Berg + Schmidt.

What drew your attention to BergaFat or Berg + Schmidt as a company?

Al Ames: First of all you have to take a look at the US market in this segment. Unfor-tunately, oils extracted from cotton, soy or low-quality fats are still used as a source of energy. The usual products are first- generation Ca salts and hydrogenated tal-

low that contain a high proportion of stear-ic acid (C18:0). It’s only in recent years that some re-thinking has been done. C16:0 fatty acids and palm fats are now beginning to replace C18:0.When I heard of a fat powder with a 99% fat content I got interested. Through my years of experience and international contacts I was able to find various sources and evaluate palm oil based products from different sup-pliers. It seemed to me that Berg + Schmidt was the best choice because of its commit-ment to offer a “pure” line exclusively for use in animal feed and to produce bypass fat powder in its own plant.

When did the cooperation with us actually start?

Al Ames: My first meeting with Berg + Schmidt’s Managing Director Andreas Reith and Area Sales Manager Friederike Pohl in April 2009 was the starting point for the launch of BergaFat in the North American market. So NutriLinx was one of the first companies in the USA to import fat powders based on palm oil.

And did you have any problems with the launch of BergaFat?

Al Ames: I must admit I had my doubts about it at the time, because the US Amer-ican market had been dominated by Ca salts for decades. But from the start, Berg + Schmidt was a reliable and extremely com-petent partner and submitted the results of numerous trials carried out in Europe and Asia that documented the superiority of BergaFat over Ca salts. Additionally, we found two universities that were willing to carry out trials in the US American market. In 2010, a team from Penn State University under Dr. Kevin Harvatine tested the effica-cy of BergaFat against a commercially avail- able calcium salt. Then Dr. Adam Lock from Michigan State University was willing to work with us. He first tested the perform- ance of BergaFat F-100 against a negative control, then he compared BergaFat F-100 with the lecithinized fat powder BergaFat HPL-106 and finally conducted a dose-response trial with BergaFat F-100. All the studies proved that supplementation with BergaFat increases the milk yield at a higher milk fat level and with an unchanged milk protein content and boosts feed conversion and ef-ficiency. It’s a fact that at the bottom line a farmer increases his profit by using Berga-Fat, because its cost effectiveness can also be calculated convincingly – not least on the basis of the results of the dose-response trial. Fortunately, through my years of work with dairy farmers I also had a lot of use-ful contacts and customers who were more than willing to try out the “new” product BergaFat.

In other words, you – and your customers too – are convinced that BergaFat offers benefits.

Al Ames: Absolutely. Because when you come to think of it, the success of BergaFat rests on three pillars. First, there is the high quality of the product and its safety and reliability, the result of systematic quality management. For example, every batch is accompanied by an individual certificate of analysis in accordance with the EU regula-tions on limits for various pollutants such as dioxins or PCBs. Secondly, BergaFat offers technical advan-tages; it is a white, free-flowing powder and tasteless, which means there are no

problems of acceptance by dairy cows. And thirdly, it’s a great advantage that Berg+Schmidt has extensive competence in animal nutrition with lipids and optimizes its products continuously.

How has business developed over the past few years, in view of these favourable conditions?

Al Ames: Since 2009 we have managed to step up business from year to year; we have more than doubled the amount sold from one year to the next. So business has devel-oped very favourably!

And what goals have you set yourself for the next five years?

Al Ames: We hope to intensify our cooper-ation with Berg + Schmidt further still, as a basis for continuing growth. I’m confident that will enable us to increase BergaFat’s market share in the USA; the target I have set myself is a market share of anything up to 25% by 2020.

In 2012 Berg + Schmidt established an af-filiate of its own in the USA. What support do you expect from there?

Al Ames: First and foremost the firms will complement each other, because Nutri-Linx is strongly represented in the dairy farming sector and also has contacts with manufacturers of feed for horses. The US affiliate of Berg + Schmidt handles ingre-dients for hogs, poultry and pet food and Berg + Schmidt’s oleochemical products. What’s more, the general manager of the affiliate is an animal nutritionist, and that will bring farm animals into the fore-ground. It means we have expertise on the spot. And presence on the spot naturally results from the much shorter decision-making and communication routes too. For Berg + Schmidt itself it means a huge boost to the company’s image and will ensure long-term presence in an important market.

And what is the secret of your success?

Al Ames: Well, I’ve had to do with dairy farming for over 45 years. I grew up on a dairy farm myself; I’m familiar with the mentality of farmers. We realized early on that the right customers would be a key to

our success, and we built up a strong busi-ness to business relationship with them. I think, with Berg + Schmidt as a manufac-

turer of safe, quality products and NutriLinx as a reliable agent on the spot we have a competent duo with a successful future.

BergaPur Horse: a metabolism promoter for proud winnersBerg + Schmidt spoke with Anette Scherkamp (graduate agricultural engineer and horse manage-ment expert) from the stud farm Steendiek on the benefits of BergaPur Horse in horse feeding.

What do you feel is the most important aspect of feeding?

A. Scherkamp: To my mind it’s essential to provide balanced nutrition in keeping with the horse’s needs to give it a long and healthy life. Horses should also be able and willing to perform well, and have plenty of character. And of course it’s important to me that they should look perfect – in other words, they must have strong muscles, a glossy coat and healthy hooves.

What daily ration do you give your horses?

A. Scherkamp: The feed is always adjusted to the horse’s individual needs, of course. Our show ponies and the stallions preparing for licensing, for example, are given haylage ad lib twice a day; that can be as much as 8 kg. And in addition they get 3 to 5 kg of feed concentrate. To ensure optimum nutrition they are given BergaPur Horse and a vitamin mixture too. After licensing we put the stal-

lions on a reduced diet. Besides the haylage they are only given 1 to 2 kg of feed concen-trate once daily, at midday, supplemented with 100 to 200 g of beet slices, BergaPur Horse and a vitamin mixture.

How long have you been using BergaPur Horse?

A. Scherkamp: For about two months. At present we are giving BergaPur Horse to more than 25 sport ponies, breeding stal-

lions and young horses. The daily dose is about 10 g per 100 kg body weight.

And are you satisfied with BergaPur Horse?

A. Scherkamp: More than satisfied! All the animals are doing extremely well, and after three months of feeding with BergaPur Horse they have a smooth, shiny coat. But I must admit I had my doubts at first. That’s why I asked my vet, Dr. Albrecht – a horse specialist from Kiel – for advice. He con-firmed at once that lecithin is a valuable supplement to a horse’s diet; in particular it helps to ensure a healthy digestive tract and proper growth of the coat and hooves.

What has your experience been with feeding BergaPur Horse to your top- performance sport horses?

A. Scherkamp: The horses show consistently good performance in daily training and in competitions. And we noticed something else, too: as soon as the ponies reached their optimum level of training and feeding, it was possible to reduce the feed concen-trate ration considerably without spoiling their performance or condition.

Where do the benefits lie, then?

A. Scherkamp: Well – first of all, of course, it’s good for your finances if you need less feed concentrate. But the main benefit lies in the health of the animals’ metabolic sys-tem. Because ponies, especially, often react very sensitively to the overdose of proteins and carbohydrates they get through large

amounts of feed concentrate. That can lead to metabolic disorders like stomach ulcers or laminitis. So it’s advisable to keep the amount of feed concentrate as small as possible. Moreover, BergaPur Horse actively supports metabolism and the health of the digestive system.

Do you have the impression that BergaPur Horse has a positive effect on the growth of the coat, hair and hooves?

A. Scherkamp: Yes – a very positive effect. The growth of the coat and hooves has improved enormously. And the seasonal changes in the coat are taking place much faster.

Have you noticed a positive effect on per-formance, muscle development and the recovery time too?

A. Scherkamp: We certainly have. The young stallions look fantastic in spite of hard work and a reduced feed concentrate ration. And I have the impression that the horses re- cover faster after their work.

Thank you for giving us this interview. We hope you and the Steendiek stud farm will continue to be so successful, and we’re already keeping our fingers crossed for the winning stallion of 2014.

BergaPur Horse as an energy boosterBergaPur Horse is a valuable phospholipid complex in the form of deoiled lecithin for ac-

tivating the metabolic system. As an essential component of somatic cells, lecithin is respon-

sible for important functions in the formation of brain and nerve cells, mucous membranes,

the muscles and the lungs. Phospholipids are involved in the metabolism, energy supply

and respiration of the cells – the basis for healthy animals capable of first-rate per-

formance.

Moreover, being an emulsifier, BergaPur Horse promotes the digestibility of nutrients and

improves the absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins; this in turn provides an ad-

ditional energy boost.

Congratulations!

Together with its partner Carotino, Berg + Schmidt has invested in a deoiling plant for the production of pure soybean leci-thin. Singapore as the location offers logis-tic advantages for the procurement of raw materials and for exports. In the first stage of construction the annual production ca- pacity will be 4,000 tonnes. The plant will be state-of-the-art and meet all the re-quirements for ISO, GMP and HACCP certifi-cation.

With a worldwide consumption of 250,000 tonnes, vegetable lecithins are one of the most significant natural emulsifiers. With over 50 years of experience in the inter-national lecithin industry Volkmar Wywiol, shareholder of Berg+Schmidt (Feed) and Sternchemie (Food), may be regarded as one of the pioneers of lecithin product develop-ment and marketing.

More sophisticated requirements in the field of active substances are increasing the use of highly concentrated lecithins in powder form. Managing Director H.V. Bhawe from Berg+Schmidt Asia explains this growing demand: “Unlike other emulsifiers, leci-thins have a threefold effect. They supply the metabolic system with essential nu-trients, they increase the digestibility of fats, and at the same time they are power- ful emulsifiers.” And Bhawe adds: “The viscous lecithins with their 35 % crude oil content are no longer concentrated enough for many applications in both food and feed production.”

Berg + Schmidt and its partner firms already have a special plant for the production of deoiled lecithin in India, which is working to capacity to meet local demand.

East Asia in terms of area. Because of its convenient location on the sea route between

Europe and China, Singapore was already an important trading post in the colonial era

around 1900. With a gross domestic product of nearly 50,000 US dollars per head of the
