It will be a celebration of the many cultures that are part of our school community. Our day will start with an assembly on the Infants’ Quad around 9.20am with a Parade of Nations. Each class will march around the assembly area in costume. Students are asked to dress in their traditional costumes, in the flag colours of their country of heritage or in the colours of the country they are studying in class. Between recess and lunch (11.30-1.00) classes will visit the country displays of other classes. Parents are invited to tour the rooms at this time. Many children are then looking forward to sharing lunch with their parents (let’s hope the weather is fine). After lunch we are having a school assembly in the hall with the choir and a couple of groups performing. Parents are welcome to attend but please be aware that space in the hall is very limited with all classes assembled. Athletics Carnival I had a great day at the athletics carnival yesterday. Everyone competed and behaved beautifully. We had good weather and a wonderful time was had by all. Good luck to all the winners who will go on to represent us at the zone carnival. I would like to thank Mr Wicks for his efforts in organising this event and all the parents who assisted on the day to help the carnival run smoothly.

Asthma Awareness Does your child suffer from asthma? Asthma affects about 1 in 9 school-aged children. The Asthma Foundation has great information for parents of children who suffer from asthma. For more information on how you can support a child with asthma, go to http://www.asthmafoundation.org.au/. Cycling Fun Cycling is a fun and healthy activity for people of all ages. The NSW Government has set up the Bicycle information for NSW website. The site includes information of what to look for when choosing a bike, suggestions on great bicycle paths around NSW and safety tips. Go to: http://www.bicycleinfo.nsw.gov.au/index.html Whooping Cough The general Sydney community has experienced a recent increase in the diagnosis of Whooping cough (Pertussis). Whooping cough usually begins like a cold with a blocked or runny nose, tiredness, mild fever and a cough. Due to the increase in influenza and colds relating to our winter months students should be encouraged to seek medical advice and remain at home if unwell. It is also important that everyone is reminded of the importance at this time of appropriate infection controls. http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/factsheets/infectious/pertussis.html

Thank you David Leydon Principal

Stage 2 and 3 Mini Olympics This Thursday Years 3 – 6 will be participating in a Multicultural Mini Olympics program. After recess, classes will meet on the back grassed area and parade under the flags of the countries they have been learning about for Multicultural Day. Students will then rotate to a different teacher every 15 minutes where they will learn about and play a traditional game from the country that teacher’s class have been learning about. Students will stop for lunch but recommence rotations at 2pm. At approximately 2.45pm classes will regather for the medal ceremony, during which a gold, silver, and bronze medal will be awarded by each teacher to the classes who displayed the best sportsmanship during their traditional game. We will be outside for most of the day so students are encouraged to wear suncream and bring an extra drink. Students are also reminded that they must wear a hat to participate.

Library News Book Week celebrations for 2012 are from 20th to 24th of August. During this time we will be having a Book Fair in the Library. The Book Fair will run from Thursday 16th to Wednesday 22nd of August. This is an opportunity for you to support our school and help assist the education of your child. Books from the supplier Scholastic will be on display in the library and you will be able to purchase books for yourself, or as donations to the school library before school (8.30am) and at lunch times. Prices start from $1.00 with most books costing around $7.00. On Thursday 23th August students will have the chance to participate in a dress up day. As the theme for Book Week is ‘Champions Read’, children will have the choice of dressing as either their favourite champion or as their favourite book character. Children will parade their costumes after recess on this day (times to follow). All parents are welcome to attend. There will be a book prize for the best dressed in each class. Looking forward to seeing you at Book Week, Mrs Hamersma (Teacher/Librarian) EMAIL Is The Way To Go!!! We are now emailing the school newsletter to those who requested it.
