Healthwatch England and Local Healthwatch organisations were created under the
Health & Social Care Act 2012. Healthwatch Trafford was set up in April 2013 to
play a part in improving Trafford health and social care services. We achieve this
by:
o Providing Trafford residents with information about local health and care
services;
o Listening to residents views and experiences of Trafford’s health and social
care services to build a picture of where services are doing well and where
they can be improved;
o Sharing resident’s experiences and views to influence services to make
positive change wherever possible.
By complementing the work that staff carry out, volunteers play a vital role in
helping Healthwatch Trafford achieve its objectives. Currently, a number of
volunteers sit on our Board, on various Healthwatch committees and carry out
enter and view visits to health & care services. We want to build on our existing
volunteer base, offering a range of interesting and engaging opportunities that
appeal to a wide range of Trafford residents from diverse backgrounds.
We welcome applications from young people and there is a Healthwatch Trafford
Young People’s Volunteering pack. Please visit the young people’s section of our
website to find volunteering information for young people:
www.healthwatch.co.uk.
We aim to support our volunteers in many ways including:
Providing an induction that covers Healthwatch Trafford
organisational policies, procedures and ethos, the volunteer role,
volunteer rights and responsibilities;
Reimbursing volunteers for reasonable expenses incurred as a direct
result of their work, e.g travel costs to meetings (as stated in the
Healthwatch Trafford handbook);
Keeping volunteers up to date and informed about Healthwatch
through electronic volunteer bulletins (twice a month) and regular
email / telephone contact with their named staff member;
Regular and consistent one to one meetings with a named staff
member where volunteers can feedback on their experiences – what
is going well and what can be improved, identify training needs and
reflect on learning and personal development;
Providing opportunities for training and personal development
wherever possible.

Benefits of volunteering with Healthwatch Trafford include:

Anyone living in the Trafford borough who:
Cares about health and social care
Wants to make a positive difference for local residents
Can follow our Confidentiality Policy and Equal Opportunities Policy,
demonstrating respect when working with local residents and other
volunteers from a range of backgrounds and with a range of abilities.
Once an expression of interest form is received, you will be contacted by
Healthwatch Trafford (HWT) to arrange an informal interview. At interview you
will be asked a number of questions around the role/s that you have chosen and
this will determine that the volunteer post meets your interests and needs and
those of HWT.
If both parties decide to continue, you will be asked to complete an application
form and references will be requested. HWT requires two references before we
can place you in your volunteering role. Your references can be from suitably
qualified people who are not close relatives.
During the selection process, should HWT feel that the volunteer role is unsuitable,
HWT will explain the reasons to you. All successful applicants will be asked to sign
a Volunteer and Confidentiality Agreement.
3
We recognised that sometimes, for different reasons, volunteer placements don’t
always work out, therefore all volunteers will be given a short trial period of six
months with an initial review after three months. During this period you will
receive training, support and feedback. This period will also give you the
opportunity to feedback any views & concerns that you may have in your role as a
HWT volunteer. We encourage you to voice any concerns that you may have about
your role at any time.
