What is different about the KMRDCs?The KMRDCs have been developed by Kent Connects, a public sector partnership of fourteen local authorities,Kent Fire & Rescue Service and Kent Police. Through collaboration, the partners are able to secure cutting-edgetechnology, made affordable through economies of scale. They are also developing their vision of a single commonICT infrastructure to support integration and shared services. As a result they are delivering better, more accessibleand cheaper public services for 1.25m local residents.

Kent Connects’ philosophy is to share its systems and services with other public sector organisations whereverpossible. New users can be confident that the centres will keep pace with government requirements and adhere tobest practice standards because they are managed by and for the public sector.

How do they work?Between them the two data centres will have the capacity for nearly 200 racks and offer their surplus space to rentbased on their actual costs. External network connections are available as part of the service, including to:

• Kent Public Service Network (KPSN)

• Internet and Gsi via KPSN

• Ja.Net, the educational network.

there are also private circuit connections to other sites via BT or Virgin Media.

Day-to-day management of the facilities is undertaken by the host authority and overseen by a management boardof partner representatives.
