Overview
The Forbes Ben Hall Shears is a competition for shearers and wool handlers run
in conjunction with the Forbes P A & H Association’s Annual Show, under the
auspices of Sports Shear NSW.
Whilst there has been a shearing competition run in conjunction with the Forbes
Show for many years, 2013 was only the second time the competition has been
run as part of the selection process for NSW State Team selection for Open
Shearing and Open Wool Handling.
As was the case in 2012, the 2013 Ben Hall Shears was a popular event at the
Forbes Show, with the spectator gallery consistently full throughout the day.
A small but dedicated committee has spent the past nine months organizing the
event, and for the first time this year, were able to secure a classed line of pure
Pooginook maiden merino ewes for the competition from a local property.
In 2013, the numbers were slightly reduced on the previous year, but the event
was none the less hailed a success, with most, if not all of the difficulties of the
previous year being rectified.
The Forbes Ben Hall Shears consists of 7 events. Novice, Intermediate, Senior &
Open Shearing, and Novice and Open Wool Handling, as well as a State
Selection Wool Handling. From all the shearing events, a “Local” Shearing
winner is also named.
Competition commences at 8.30 am and concludes at 6.00 pm with the
Presentations to the Winners and the announcement of the competitor who has
gained selection in the Open Shearing and the Open Wool Handling for the
NSW State Team.

Conduct of Competition
The Forbes Ben Hall Shears is conducted under the auspices of Sports
Shear Association of Australia NSW (SSAA NSW).
Ben Hall Shears shearing competition uses rotational judging running
six stands with scoring on the board and in the pen as well as time
taken.
The competition is conducting initially by heats, from which the highest
scoring twelve competitors qualify for the semi finals, and from which
the highest scoring six competitors qualify for the final.
Competition is conducted for Novice, Intermediate, Senior & Open.
The winning finalist in the Open Competition also qualifies for a place
in the NSW State Team for the following year.
In the event of insufficient numbers, the highest scoring six competitors
will go directly to the final.
Scores are displayed for all competitors and spectators to see, and
competitors are encouraged to review their score card in order to
improve their technique.
For the Wool handling, heats are conducted from which the highest
scoring four competitors are elevated to the final. Woolhandling
competition is conducted for Novice, Open and then separately (time
permitting) for State Selection, in which the highest scoring two
finalists are named to compete for the NSW team the following year.
