Focus on FallsMore than one in three people
age 65 years or older fall eachyear. The risk of falling and fallrelated problems rises with age.
According to the NationalInstitute on Health, each yearmore than 1.6 million older U.S.adults visit the emergencydepartment for fall-relatedinjuries. Falls are the number onecause of fractures, hospitaladmissions for trauma, loss ofindependence, and injury deaths. Most often fall-related fracturesare in the person’s hip, pelvis, spine, arm, hand, or ankle. Hipfractures are one of the mostserious types of fall injury. Theyare a leading cause of injury andloss of independence among olderadults. Most adults who cannotreturn to independent living aftersuch injuries had physical ormental disabilities before thefracture, thus resulting in the needfor long-term care.
Risk FactorsRisk factors related to falls can
include, muscle weakness, poorbalance or difficulty walking, fluctuations in blood pressure, slower reflexes, foot problems, sensory problems, visualdisturbances,
confusion (even short termmemory loss), and taking four ormore medications at one time, including over the countermedications.
