The Connection betweenDiabetes and Alzheimer’s Disease

As scientists work to unravelthe mystery of what really causesAlzheimer’s disease, one factorthat continues to come up isdiabetes, specifically type2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is a conditionwhere the body either becomesless able to use insulin orproduces too little insulin (or acombination of both), causing itto be less able to process sugarand turn it into energy.

Type 2 diabetes has typicallybeen considered an adult disease, although there are more childrenand teenagers developing diabetesnow, likely due to the higherlevels of obesity and sedentarylifestyles.

Type 2 diabetes has a hereditarycomponent, meaning that if youhave family members with thedisease, you are more likely todevelop it.

Several other factors increaseyour chances of developing type 2diabetes, including obesity, sedentary lifestyle, small or largebirth weight and stress.

Research has found that, onaverage, people with diabetes aremore likely to demonstrate slowerprocessing speeds and impaired

executive functioning skills, evenwithout a diagnosis of dementia.

People with type 2 diabetes aresignificantly more likely todevelop Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia and other typesof dementia. Research has foundthat 50% of those with type 2diabetes will go on to developdementia.

At this time, researchers don’tbelieve type 2 diabetes is the solecause of Alzheimer’s but ratherthat it increases the risk ofdementia developing.

An article in the journalNeurology outlined research thatdemonstrated a correlationbetween higher levels of glucosein the body and lower levels ofcognitive functioning. None of the141 participants had diabetes. Butthose with chronic higher bloodsugar levels performed morepoorly on cognitive testing andalso showed decreases in the sizeand structural changes in thehippocampal area of the brain.

Research has shown that peoplewith well-controlled blood sugarlevels can slow or even preventcognitive decline, despite thepresence of diabetes. Somemedications for the treatment ofdiabetes have demonstratedeffectiveness in providing goodcontrol of glucose levels as well asimproved cognition in those withdiabetes.
