•Lord: landowner

•Fief: a piece of land given in exchange for military service

•Vassal (knight): the person receiving the fief

•Serf: an agricultural worker tied to the land

•Manor: self-sufficient community which included the lord’s house, the church, the blacksmith, peasant houses, and fields

•Tithe: 10% income paid to the church

Feudalism

•Lords grantparcels of land known as fiefs to lesser knights who are known as vassals

•Vassals provide military service to the lord

•During/after the fall of Rome, Germanic tribes invaded Europe

•Kings could not protect their citizens

•Europeans turned to rich landowners for protection

Why/How Did Feudalism Form?

ANS: Inability of kings to defend their land, citizens looked to wealthy landowners for protection

Manorialism

•Manors were self-sufficient communities where serfs raised and produced nearly everything needed for that community

• The open field system allowed several families of serfs to farm strips of the same parcel of land

• Living conditions for serfs were generally harsh on manors

Why/How did Manorialism Form?

•After the fall of Rome, trade slowed down significantly

•People were afraid to travel because of invaders, so they began to make everything they needed at home on the manor
