•Lord: landowner

Manorialism

•Manors were self-sufficient communities where serfs raised and produced nearly everything needed for that community

• The open field system allowed several families of serfs to farm strips of the same parcel of land

• Living conditions for serfs were generally harsh on manors

Why/How did Manorialism Form?

•After the fall of Rome, trade slowed down significantly

•People were afraid to travel because of invaders, so they began to make everything they needed at home on the manor

• How would you describe a manor?

• How would you describe life on the manor?

• Read the “primary source.” Would you describe the life of a serf as easy or hard? Why? USE EVIDENCE FROM THE SOURCE.
