Word Wall Vocabulary:
• Lord: landowner
• Fief: a piece of land given in exchange for military service
• Vassal (knight): the person receiving the fief
• Serf: an agricultural worker tied to the land
• Manor: self-sufficient community which included the lord’s house, the church, the blacksmith, peasant houses, and fields
Why/How Did Feudalism Form?
• During/after the fall of Rome, Germanic tribes invaded Europe
• Kings could not protect their citizens
• A new social and political system formed because kings could not protect their citizens
Feudalism
• Feudalism is a social and economic system
• In the feudal system, people are categorized into different groups
• Groups have a reciprocal relationship- each group gives something to the other group and receives something in return

Turn and TalkHow would you describe the causes of the development of feudalism?
ANS: Inability of kings to defend their land, citizens looked to wealthy landowners for protection
Manorialism
• Manors were self-sufficient communities where serfs raised and produced nearly everything needed for that community
• The open field system allowed several families of serfs to farm strips of the same parcel of land
• Living conditions for serfs were generally harsh on manors
Impact of the Fall of Rome
• After the fall of Rome, trade slowed down significantly
• People were afraid to travel because of invaders, so they began to make everything they needed at home on the manor
Turn and TalkHow would you describe the economic system of manorialism?
ANS: Self-sufficient manors produced everything that the people living on them needed to survive
