Lesson 6, The Selects Project Studio’s main interface should be on your screen. If it isn’t, click on the Application Launch button and choose the video editing software from the menu. Open your saved project. As you have learned, the Selects project is where the pieces of your video production puzzle begin to come together. Look now at the video clips and segments that are already captured or created. • Make a list of what you have that’s ready to be used, and then plan what else you

may need to create the video production that you are envisioning. • If necessary, watch the entire Tech-Design Digital Video Editing Exercises tape

again. • Get creative! For example, can you think of a good way to incorporate Scene 3D, the

extra-close shot of the father’s eyes? • Name the new shots, or rename the previously captured ones, to indicate the order

in which you will have them appear in your video. • Continue with any other preparation work that you feel is necessary prior to

performing the actual editing. This may include not only capturing more video clips, but trimming them, adding audio elements, creating additional titles or credits, or doing other activities that you have learned.

• One of your best resources in completing these activities is this Module Guide. Use the instructions throughout to aid you as you prepare to edit your video.

• Be aware of the remaining time you have available in your class period. Once you’ve finished your Selects project, you still need to edit your video in the next section!

When you are finished, exit Studio by clicking on the Exit button (X) in the top right corner of the main interface screen. Once you’ve exited the software, go to the next section in the presentation.

Lesson 6, The Editing Session Studio’s main interface should be on your screen. If it isn’t, click on the Application Launch button and choose the video editing software from the menu. Open your saved project. Now is the time to assemble your video production jigsaw puzzle! Earlier in this lesson, you did a Selects project to capture any remaining scenes you would like to include as well as determine the order in which your captured scenes will appear. From this point, the actual editing should be simple! Here are some tips and reminders: • The video assembly must occur in the tracks of the Video Editor, primarily the top

track. • Use this Module Guide as your resource for steps that must be taken to assemble

and produce your video. • The final video you create must include a title, video clips that tell the entire story,

and credits. • This is YOUR video. Have fun, be creative, and make it as unique as you can! When you are finished, exit Studio by clicking on the Exit button (X) in the top right corner of the Main Interface screen. Once you’ve exited the software, go to the next section in the presentation.

Lesson 2, Pacing Studio’s main interface should be on your screen. If it isn’t, click on the Application Launch button and choose the video editing software from the menu. Follow the directions below to complete the activity. Using what you’ve just learned both in the presentation and within this Module Guide, perform some editing of pacing samples. Because you already captured Scenes 1A (medium shot of the father) and 2A (medium shot of the son), you have some footage to work with. Follow these guidelines: • Open a New Project for each movie and save one as “Relaxed (with your initials).”

Save the second movie as “Dramatic (with your initials).” • Be aware of the time left in your class period as you embark on these editing

activities. Note that the quickest way to complete your pacing activity is by using the video clips you’ve already captured.

• Capture additional scenes, or portions of scenes, from the Tech-Design Digital Video Editing Exercises videotape by following the capturing instructions that appear in this guide.

• Keep in mind that there are multiple ways to accomplish your editing task. Choose the method that you are most comfortable with. There will be more time for practicing in later lessons.

• Create two separate movies, each with its own emotional influence: one should be more relaxed and casual by utilizing longer shots with fewer cuts and the other should create a tenser, dramatic effect with more, quicker cuts and perspective changes.

• Don’t forget that you have a variety of shots (medium shot and close-ups as well as an extreme close-up of the father’s eyes), camera angles (low angle of father and high angle of son), and subject matter (the advertisement) to work with.

• Remember, you will have more opportunity to work with the material in later lessons. For now, you are merely creating short videos that illustrate the effect a Video Editor can create using pacing.

3. Fill in the date on the Edit Worksheet if you have not done so already. You will notice

there is a space for the PRODUCTION PROJECT. If you have not done so, write “The Name of Your Movie” in this space followed by your name. The columns you will be using are the START & STOP, DURATION, and the DESCRIPTION column.

4. Watch the shot and pause the tape on the last frame of the shot (use the Step Back

and Step Forward control buttons). Record the following information for each shot on the Edit Worksheet:

• Start & Stop: “from” and “to” counter numbers • Duration: total time of each clip and transition • Description: of the scene and take number

5. Continue this procedure for the remainder of the tape. Use the Preview window

controls as you need them (even if you want to skip ahead to the next image of the clapstick rather than watching the scene over and over).

6. On the main interface, exit Studio by clicking on the Exit button (X) in the top right

Lesson 5, Editing a Scene (Part I) Studio’s main interface should be on your screen. If it isn’t, click on the Application Launch button and choose the video editing software from the menu. Follow the directions below to complete the activity. In this activity, you will begin to edit your own version of the video you have been working with throughout the Digital Video Editing module. In addition to Part I, there will be three other class periods dedicated to your editing project. Budget your time wisely! As you begin to edit, keep the following items in mind: • Start with a basic list of what shots you want to use in your production, based on the

shots that appear on your source tape (Tech-Design Digital Video Editing Exercises).

• Capturing must happen first! Capture one, a few, or all of the shots you will be using.

• When capturing, it’s up to you how much of the scene you want to capture. Keep in mind that if you capture more than you need, you must later trim the clip.

• As you capture and/or edit scenes and shots, make sure to change the names from the default names they are given automatically. Always include your initials so your segments are easily identifiable as yours.

• Use the sections that appear earlier in this Module Guide to aid you if you need help performing the necessary steps. Feel free to review instructions from other levels as well as this one.

• If you make a mistake when editing your video, Edit > Undo can be used for reversing previous actions. Each time you click Undo, it will step back one action.

• Remember, you will only be editing the beginning of your production today. Take your time to do it the way that you want it!

When you are finished, exit Studio by clicking on the Exit button (X) in the top right corner of the Main Interface screen. Once you’ve exited the software go to the next section in the presentation.

Lesson 6, Editing a Scene (Part II) Studio’s main interface should be on your screen. If it isn’t, click on the Application Launch button and choose the video editing software from the menu. Follow the directions below to complete the activity. In this activity, you will continue to edit your own version of the video you have been working with throughout the Digital Video Editing module. In addition to Parts I & II, there will be two other class periods dedicated to your editing project. Budget your time wisely! As you continue to edit, keep the following items in mind: • Some or all of the scenes you wish to include in your video should already be

captured. If not, or if you need to capture more, do that first. • Review the items listed for the previous lesson (Part I) because the tips and

suggestions still apply. • Have you established a perception in the minds of your viewers through pacing? Be

consistent. If you choose to use a certain method, stick with it throughout the entire production.

• By the end of today’s class period, you should have your video production edited up to at least the point where the advertisement for the video game has been passed from the son to his father. (Scene 3A, 3B, or 3C, or a combination of them).

• Periodically, of course, you should review your edited video. When you’re happy with it, use that version as your “master” and edit more segments onto it.

• Again, as you capture and/or edit scenes and shots, make sure to change the names from the default names they are given automatically. Always include your initials so your segments are easily identifiable as yours. You may also want to number them to help you remember which version is the last one you created.

When you are finished, exit Studio by clicking on the Exit button (X) in the top right corner of the main interface screen. Once you’ve exited the software, go to the next section in the presentation.

Lesson 7, Editing a Scene (Part III) Studio’s main interface should be on your screen. If it isn’t, click on the Application Launch button and choose the video editing software from the menu. Follow the directions below to complete the activity. In this activity, you will continue to edit your own version of the video you have been working with throughout the Digital Video Editing module. In addition to Parts I, II, and III, there will be one more class period dedicated to your editing project. At that time, you can add your “finishing touches.” Budget your time wisely! As you continue to edit, keep the following items in mind: • Begin your editing session today by capturing the remaining scenes you are going to

include in your video production. • By the end of class today, your goal should be that the basic editing of your video is

complete. (What this means is that all that will remain is adding your title and credits as well as additional audio elements.)

• Are you content with your video so far? If not, adjust or replace the segments that you wish to change. It’s YOUR video, so keep editing until you’re satisfied with it.

• Remember, if you have any questions about the steps to be taken to perform different activities, review earlier sections in this Module Guide.

• Think ahead. You should be finishing your production in your next class period and outputting it to a videotape to hand in to your instructor. Do you want a copy to keep for yourself? Bring in a blank videocassette from home if you do.

When you are finished, exit Studio by clicking on the Exit button (X) in the top right corner of the main interface screen. Once you’ve exited the software, go to the next section in the presentation.

Lesson 8, Editing a Scene (Part IV) Studio’s main interface should be on your screen. If it isn’t, click on the Application Launch button and choose the video editing software from the menu. Follow the directions below to complete the activity. In this activity, you will finish editing your own version of the video you have been working with throughout the Digital Video Editing module. At this time, you will be adding your “finishing touches.” As you complete the editing of your production, keep the following items in mind: • Your attention at this point should be on the finishing touches of your editing project:

adding a title, adding transitions, creating credits and editing them onto your video, and incorporating audio elements like a voice-over, music, and sound effects.

• Be creative! Again, it’s your very own production, so make it what you want it! • Remember, Titles and Credits are created using Studio’s Title Editor. • When your production is complete, output it to a videotape (see the directions in the

Beginning Level) and turn it in to your teacher. If you want a copy to keep for yourself, repeat the process using the tape you brought in with you today.

• If you feel that you cannot finish your production by the end of your class period, speak to your instructor.

• CONGRATULATIONS! You have now taken your first step into your video editing future!

When you are finished, exit Studio by clicking on the Exit button (X) in the top right corner of the Main Interface screen. Once you’ve exited the software, go to the next section in the presentation.

Lesson 7, Editing a Scene (Part I) Studio’s main interface should be on your screen.

Once you’ve exited the software, go to the next section in the presentation.

Lesson 8, Editing a Scene (Part II) Studio’s main interface should be on your screen.

• Review the items listed for the previous lesson (Part I) because the tips and

suggestions still hold true.

Once you’ve exited the software, click on the Forward arrow to resume the presentation.

Lesson 9, Editing a Scene (Part III) Studio’s main interface should be on your screen.

Lesson 10, Editing a Scene (Part IV) Studio’s main interface should be on your screen.
