A Program of Skinner Leadership Institute
WHO IS HIGH-CHARACTER, HIGH-INTEGRITY, RESILIENT, CONFIDENT, AND COMMITTED TO ADVANCING PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY, WHILE IMPACTING THE HUMAN CONDITION
BECOMING A DIFFERENCE-MAKING
promise driven .
The Masters Series for Distinguished Leaders (MSDL) operates two days a month between January – June.
It offers leadership excellence training for African American
middle managers, ages 25-45, providing high level exposure to
world class leaders, a community service project, as well as
personal and professional development. MSDL includes
support systems of personalized coaching by renowned
veteran leaders, an active alumni network, peer-to‐peer support
among MSDL colleagues from diverse disciplines and career
paths, and a network of accomplished leaders surrounding
participants even after they graduate from MSDL.
UNIQUENESS: The Masters Series for Distinguished
Leaders (MSDL) focuses on the internal qualities of high
performing leadership such as strength of character, integrity,
resiliency, team building, developing empowering
relationships, and understanding the proper uses of
power. These are the critical skills needed by high performing
organizations with diverse talent, operating in extremely
competitive markets.
SUCCESS: Masters Series for Distinguished Leaders is built on
a philosophy of PROMISE DRIVEN LEADERSHIP. MSDL moves
past the usual leadership development focus on PURPOSE, or
the work a leader is called to do...to PROMISE, or the
difference a leader is called to make to improve the human
condition. Promise Driven leaders are always “other‐centered”
and make others around them better. The goal of MSDL is to
equip high‐performing executives with the character strength
and mindset of PROMISE DRIVEN LEADERSHIP so they are
prepared to drive the success of their organizations an. d the
communities they serve.
PROMISE DRIVEN Leaders model seven character traits. They
are Committed to something bigger than themselves;
Considerate of others; Connected to others; Compassionate
toward others; Confident in their cause; Conscientious with
excellence as their brand, and Complementary toward
others.

“I have participated since the inception and watched the Masters Series program grow to become a significant resource for developing top of the line leaders prepared to address the needs of the African American community.“ Marc Morial, President and CEO, National Urban League
The African American Leadership Family, est. 1985
HISTORY: Beginning in 1985, a cadre of accomplished veteran African American leaders,
called, “The Leadership Family,” banded together to empower one another to leverage their
diversity for themselves, their organizations, and communities. Outstanding leaders like former
Labor Secretary Alexis M. Herman, Dr. Maya Angelou, Dr. Dorothy I. Height, Dr. Therman E.
Evans, Mr. Joseph E. “Joe” Moore, Jr., The Honorable Constance Newman, Dr. Barbara Williams-
Skinner, and others, joined in this mission. The Leadership Family is committed to developing a
robust pipeline of distinguished leaders equipped to address the challenges in our world.
Masters Series for Distinguished Leaders was founded in 2008 by the African American
Leadership Family to nurture and develop a new generation of high impact executives. This
culturally sensitive, global leadership excellence and community service program assists high
performing business, government, and nonprofit middle managers, ages 25-45, who are people
of color, to move to the next levels of their careers while serving under-resourced communities.
MSDL has graduated over 100 gifted and talented executives.
