creationofanauditcommitteetooverseeperiodic

independentauditsofourfinances. Underpolicy

governanceaswehaveadoptedit,theAdministrative

Team(theATeam)carriesoutmostexecutivefunctions.

BetsyDavisandDianeScottwillserveasmembersofthe

ATeamthisyearbyvirtueoftheirpositionsasCoChairs

oftheProgramCouncil.

Thispastweekend,theBoardmetforitsannual

retreat. TheretreatprovidesanopportunityforBoard

memberstogettoknowoneanother,tosetexpecta

tionsofeachotherforthecomingyear,andtograpple

withbroadpolicyquestionsthatdonotfitneatlyintoour

monthlymeetings. AfterdevotingFridaynightto

learningtheskillsandexperienceseachmemberbrings

totheBoardandreflectingonourindividualsocialand

leadershipstyles,wedevotedalldayonSaturdayto

questionsofgovernanceandpolicy. Weaddressed

conductingministerialevaluations(requiredannually

undercongregationalpolicies),honedourmissionand

visionstatements,reflectedonhowwewillchangelives

inthecomingyear,focusinginparticularoninspiring

greatergenerosityandengagingmembersmorefullyin

congregationallife. Drawingontheideaofthequestion

drivenchurchsuggestedbyauthorandAlbanInstitute

consultantDanHotchkissatthisyearsUUALargeChurch

Conference,wealsoidentifiedthetwocentralquestions

thatwillfocustheBoardsworkthisyear. Thequestions

areHowcanwecontinuetogrowasacongregation?

andHowarewetobeinministrytopeopleoutsideour

congregation. Iinviteeachofyoutoreflectonthese

questionsaswedevelopamoreformalstructureforto

considerthemtogetherasacommunity.

WealsodevotedalargepartofSaturdayafternoon

tofundraising,withapresentationfromaconsultanton

mechanicsandstrategyofmajorfundraisingcampaigns,

andadiscussionofhowwecanmeetnear andlong

termneedsofthecongregation. OneneedIwantto

highlightistheimmediateneedforadditionalreligious

educationspace. TheREprogramhasbeentremen

douslysuccessfulinrecentyearsandifthatsuccess

(whichisessentialtothegrowthandvitalityofthe

congregation)istocontinue,wemustensureadequate

spaceforallofourclasses. Whilewecontinuetofocus

onmeetingthecongregationslongtermspaceneeds

throughthedevelopmentofanewUnityTemple

campus,wemustalsodevelopaninterimstrategyto

meetthecongregationsneeds. Wehaveanumberof

optionsfordoingso,buttheywillallrequireexpendi

turesbeyondourcurrentbudget. TheBoardandtheA

Teamareactivelyworkingontheseissues expectto

hearmoreaboutthistopicinthecomingmonths.

Finally,Iwanttoencourageanyonewithquestions,

hopes,orconcernsabouttheCongregation,governance,

orotherleadershipissuestocontactmeoranymember

oftheBoard. Thebestwaytoreachmeisbyemailing

andoveragain?Ifitsgreatonce,itseemslikeitseven

betterthesecondtimeorthefifteenthtimeorthe

millionthtime.Orsoitseemstothem.

MysevenmontholdcantquitesayAgain!yet,but

hesmilesorrelaxeswhenhehearssomethingthathes

heardmanytimesbefore.Youknow,thingslikeAllthe

hippos

go

berserk!

babies

arekissed.OrThislittlelightofmine,Imgoingtoletit

shine.Itsonlyamatteroftimebeforehecandemand

anencore.

We(oratleastI)tendtothinkthatitsonlykidswho

liketohearthesamethingsoverandover.Buttheres

somethinginsidemethatfeelscomfortedwhenIhear

thewords:Whoeveryouare,whereveryouareonyour

lifejourney,youarewelcomehere.And:Loveisthe

doctrineofthiscongregationEventhoughIhave

heardbothoftheseliterallyhundredsoftimes,they

remainmeaningfulandremindmewhatwereallabout

eachtimeIhearthem.

AsIvebeengearingupforourfullscalereligious

educationprogrammingforchildrenandyouthfor1112,

reflectingoncurriculaandritualsandritesofpassage,

Ivebeenthinkingaboutthecertainthingsthatwetalk

aboutorlearneveryyear.Therearealotofthem,of

course:theeighthgradeOWLprogram,thefourthgrade

Chaliceceremony,thesoupsupperandtheChristmas

pageantrehearsal,FlowerCommunionworshipforall

ages,andsoandsoforth.Thereissomethingcomforting

abouthavingthosesamemarkerspunctuatetheyear

overandoveragain.

Samenessisntalwaysgood.Whentheywerelittle,

mygodsonslovedthebookGoDogGo!somuchthat

theirmotherhadtodisappearitfromtheshelveson

occasion.Whenwehearandsaythesamewordsevery

week,wecanbeindangerofnotrememberingtopay

attentionaswelistenandspeak.Thenagain,Idont

alwaysneededtoberemindedthatwhoeverIam,Iam

welcome.ButwhenIdo,thereitis,hittingmealittlebit

differentlythananytimebefore.

Iamsogratefultobebeginningmyfourthyearwith

allofyou.Likemostthings,itseemsbothashortanda

longtime.Thechildrenwhowere8yearsoldwhenI

arrivedarehittingmiddleschoolandadolescence;those

justbornthenwillbeenteringpreschool.InJune,well

sendoffthehighschoolseniorswhohadjuststarted

theirfreshmanyearin2008.

Thisyear,again,wellholdthefourthgradechalice

ceremony

in

March.

Even

though

it

will

seem

familiar,

it

willbetotallydifferentbecausewellhaveanewgroup

of9and10yearolds,withtheirownuniquepresence

andtheiroriginalthoughts.Anothercropofpreschoolers

willdonanimalcostumesfortheChristmaspageant,and

makethestoryofanewbornbabyinastablefreshand

new.Andsoitiseachyear,andsoitwillalwaysbe.

AswegearupforSeptember,onthebrinkofanew

congregationalyear,allIcansayis,withgreatenthusi

asm:Again!

spent

some

time

thinking

about

the

meaningofmembershiphereatUnityTemple.Through

outthesummer,IwasabletomeetwithAlan,Emilyand

severalotherthoughtfulmembersofthecongregation

fortheirinputonthesubjectaswell. Itwasarichexperi

encethatdeepenedmyownpersonalcommitmentto

thechurch.

Weallagreethatmovingthroughthemembership

processfromvisitor,tofriend,tomemberisaveryspe

cialandsignificantdecisionforeachperson.Weaskour

selves,whatdoesitmeantobecomeamemberofthis

congregation?Inanutshell,itmeansthatapersonis

makingacommitmenttoliveoutthevaluesreflectedin

oursevenprinciples,tosupportthemission,visionand

ministryofthecongregationandtocareforothermem

bersofthecongregationasneeded.Iwasremindedthat

we,themembersofthiscongregation,createwhowe

areandhowwewilllivetogether,whichis,infact,the

missionandvisionofthechurch.Ourministryistheac

tionthatsupportsthemissionandvision.

Thenweaskourselves,whatbenefitsdoourmem

bersgainbyjoiningthisspiritualcommunity?Therewere

somanythatitwasdifficulttocompileabrieflist.We

agreedthatmembershaveasafeandlovingcommunity

withwhichtosharetheirjoysandsorrows,lifepassages,

andcelebrations.Theyareencouragedandinspiredto

grow,askquestions,challengethemselvesandothers,

heal,andencountertheholyastheyembracealifelong

searchfortruthandmeaning.Theyhaveaplacetocon

nectwithpeoplewhohavecomefromavarietyofreli

giousandspiritualbackgrounds,yettheysharecommon

valueswith.Membershaveopportunitiestoworkwith

otherstobringmorepeaceandjusticetotheworldand

canreceivepastoralcareaswellascarefromthecongre

gationwhentheyneedit.Theycanbetouched,changed

andtransformedthroughmeaningfulworshipandmusic,

faithdevelopment,smallgroupministriesandsocialmis

sion.Theirchildrencandothesame.Andfinally,mem

bershaveavoiceandvoteinshapingitall.Inmyopin

ion,thatisafineandworthylistofbenefitsforanyone

whowouldliketobeamemberofthiscongregation. It

makes

me

proud.

Ihavelearnedalotoverthesummeraboutwhatit

meanstobeamemberofthiscongregationandwhatwe

havetooffermembersatUnityTemple. Iamlooking

forwardtostrengtheningwhatwehavetooffereach

otherandworkingwithyoutogrowandcreatenewop

portunitiesforpeopletoconnect,engageandbemore

involvedinourcommunitythroughoutthecomingyear.

considerationofhowvariousideasmightfitwiththeoverallvisionoftheprojectaswellasthemissionof

potentialpartnersthatcouldprovideinitialsupportand

revenueaswemoveforwardaswellaspossiblesitesor

combinationsofsitestomeetourneeds. IPMhasgiven

uspreliminaryreportsregardingseveralpossible

configurations,andtheSteeringCommitteeisworkingto

refineandrankthesetoidentifyoneortwotopresentto

theCongregation. Perhapsthemostchallenging,and

exciting,aspectofthisprocessisfindingaunifyingtheme

andfocusforanewfacilitythatwillharmonizetheneeds

oftheCongregationanditsworldfamoushomeaswell

asservingandinspiringthebroadercommunity.

WehavealsohostedthreesessionsforCongregation

memberstomeetwiththeconsultantsfromIPM,ask

questions,andofferideasandvisionsfortheproject.

Thesemeetingsweretremendouslyhelpfultothe

SteeringCommitteeandtheConsultantsandwehope

theywerehelpfultotheCongregationaswell. Because

thecreationofanewcampusisacollectiveprojectof

theCongregationandUTRF,IPMalsometwiththeUTRF

boardandhasbeenworkingwithUTRFstaffaswell.

Inadditiontostrategicplanning,theSteering

CommitteespentconsiderabletimeinJulydealingwith

theunexpectedburstofpublicityaboutourproject. As

youlikelyhaveseen,articlesappearedinCrainsChicago

BusinessandtheWednesdayJournal,aswellason

severalblogs,abouttheUnityCenterconcept. Byand

large,thecoveragewasfavorable,althoughitoverlooked

animportantpointthatthisisajointprojectbetween

UTUUCandUTRFandthatthetwoorganizationsare

workingcloselytoachieveasharedvision. TheOak

LeavesalsoranastoryonUnityTemplesrecentnominationtobecomeaUNESCOWorldHeritageSite

(alongwith11otherWrightsitesintheUnitedStates).

Some of Our Unsung HeroesDidyouknowthateachFridaymorningateamof

UnityTemplepeopletrektoTraderJoe's,loadupmany

boxesofrescuedproduce,bread,meat,andother

groceries,takeitalltotheOP/RFFoodPantry,where

theysort,tally,andstoreeverything? Mostoftheitemsareperishablegoodsthatwillbedispensedthefollowing

Saturdaymorning,alongwithnonperishablestaples,to

200250recipientfamiliesandindividuals,eachofwhom

maycomeonlyonceamonth.TheTraderJoesRescue

operationhasfourteamsofthreeorfourmembers,each

ofwhichcoversaFridayeachmonth.Wealsohave

severalsubstitutevolunteers,foragrandtotalof21

volunteers.UnityTemplevolunteershavebeensolely

responsiblefortheTraderJoefoodrescuesinceitbegan

inearly2009.BesidestheTraderJoesvolunteers,there

areseveralotherUnityTemplememberswhovolunteer

regularlyatthefoodpantry:receivingandorganizing

food,registeringfoodpantryclients,orclerkingthe

variousstationswherefoodisgivenout.

Andthisisonlyonevolunteergroup!Youcanalso

findotherUTmembersvolunteeringattheWalkIn

Ministry, PADS,theLibrary,theTenThousandVillages

store,andUTRF,tonameonlyafewotherlocal

nonprofits.Itwouldbefun,andimpressive,Ithink,to

tallyupalltheorganizationsservedbyourUnityTemple

volunteers.Weareagroupwhotrulytryto"walkthe

walk"!

resignaftertwoyearsoffaithfuldutyduetowork

donors.SheservedasCornellUniversity'sDirectorofthe

MidwestRegionalOfficeforAlumniAffairsand

Developmentfrom1997to2008,SeniorMajorGift

OfficerforBeloitCollegein2008,andtheSierraClub's

DirectorofAdvancementfortheMidwestRegionfrom

2009to2011.WhileatCornell,Kathyworkedona$200

millionscholarshipcampaignanda$4billionuniversity

widecampaign.Kathyalsoconsultsinhigherlevel

fundraisingandcoachesnotforprofitboards.Priorto

hertimeinthenotforprofitworld,shehada15year

careerinbusiness.Kathyhasalsohadextensive

experienceservingonnotforprofitboards,goingback

to1980.Shehasaspecialinterestinarchitectural

preservation,currentlyservingontheboardofCitizens

forGlenEllynPreservation.Thispastspring,shewas

electedasaCommissioneroftheGlenEllynParkDistrict.
