Mega Managed Care Deals & Their Impact on Home CareRecent payer-provider deals – Humana’s purchase of Kindred and Curo and Anthem’s purchase of Aspire – have huge implications. Is this the start of a wave of insurer-home health acquisitions? Will we now see more risk-based contracting across payers? Could providers become payers themselves? And will these payer-provider deals ultimately lead to significant savings?

Foreign Sourcing of Labor: Micro & Macro SolutionsIs it possible to alleviate your staffing shortages by importing foreign labor? This research project will look at companies both in and outside of healthcare who have successfully imported foreign labor. Will these successful methods work for home care organizations in 2019? What are the pros and cons, and ROI?

In addition, we will look at the issue from a macro-level. While the demand for direct-care workers is steadily growing, the supply of foreign-born labor (who constitute ¼ of this workforce) is actually now tightening under Trump Administration immigration directives. What can be done to amplify advocacy on this issue?

8 Essential M&A Questions for 2019M&A Activity in home care has been white hot – for both skilled and non-skilled providers. But will it continue? This near-term forecast will address eight key questions for the coming year, including:

1. Who will be more active, strategic buyers or private equity?

2. Is the appetite for acquisitions versus organic growth changing anyway?

3. How likely are SNFs to start buying up home care in 2019?

4. Will buyers be more interested in geographic concentration or one-off opportunities?

5. How will vertical integration affect activity; is home health buying more personal care or hospice?

6. Will strategic buyers prefer small, under-performing providers, or strong performers?

7. Will health systems acquire or shed more home health businesses?

8. Are more payers emerging as buyers of home health and hospice?

Seizing the Adult Day OpportunityCould the next big thing in ‘home care’ be bricks and mortar? The advent of ridesharing, along with the growing staffing crisis, suggests a future where Adult Day Care could take off as a model of efficiency. State-of-the-Art Home Care TechnologyHome Care 100 has researched leading innovators of new technologies in skilled and non-skilled home-based care. This two-part session will begin with an overview of the most innovative forms of in-home technologies in the United States and abroad, including home security; remote patient monitoring; AI-enabled software; fall prevention; voice; virtual caregiving; medication management; and staffing solutions. Then we’ll showcase three notable healthcare technology companies.

Rendever/Virtual Reality: This startup brings virtual reality to senior care settings through shared virtual experiences, family connectivity and reminiscence therapy. After successful early beta tests in the senior living sector, Rendever sees home care as the next frontier for VR therapy.

Hexoskin/Sensor-based Wearables: This division of Carre Technologies broke into the wearables industry in 2012 targeting performance athletics. Since then, its “Smart Shirts” have caught the attention of the healthcare community for their ability to track and share data on heart rate (ECG), breathing, and sleep activity.

Pillo/Voice-enabled Companion Device: This home-based voice command system is like Amazon’s Alexa on steroids. It has the same AI capability of Alexa, plus a medication dispenser – and the ability to share healthcare information among patient, provider and payer.
