The greatest boon given by Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda to the younger generation is Balavihar. Balavihar provides a spiritual and cultural

orientation to the children of the modern age. The rationale of the Balavihars as elucidated by Pujya Gurudev Tejomayanandaji in the "March of the future" talk is summarized below: � To train the children and inculcate in

them the reverence for our ancient

culture, and inspire them to live up to it

with correct understanding.

� To create self-confidence to serve and

act cheerfully.

contacts, inculcate personal discipline

and a true spirit of leadership.

� To mould their capacity to express and

assert their individuality.

� To bring out their dormant faculties

and detect defects; cultivate and improve their creative abilities.

Sunday, September 09, 2012 Blessed Self, Hari Om! Salutations! It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to another new and exciting year of the Chinmaya Mission’s Sunday programs: the Balavihar, Yuva Kendra and Adult Study Circle classes. As before, we shall meet again at the Bridgewater Raritan High School (630 Garretson Road, Bridgewater, NJ 08807) - starting with all our regular activities on Sunday September 9,

2012 at 9.30 AM. The tremendous growth and success of the Balavihar, Yuva Kendra and the Adult Study Circle program is made possible by our volunteers who work tirelessly to provide constant enrichment and learning for children and adults. The impact of Eastern and Western cultures on our youth brings about many challenges and opportunities in their experience of growing up in America and we have seen that the long term benefits of active participation in Balavihar make a big difference in enriching their lives. As Poojya Guruji Swami Tejomayanandaji has put it, “the purpose of Balavihar is to prepare our children to live their lives fully; to learn how to face life as it comes to them as well as creating a life that they want. Balavihar should give them both roots and wings.” As such, we believe that the Balavihar, Yuva Kendra, and Adult Study Circle program is essential to spiritual and cultural growth, and we are pleased that the program includes, but is not limited to, the following:

1. A grade based program that is tuned to the mental

and intellectual growth of our children.

2. An enriching program for the entire family

regardless of the number of children, parents,

grandparents

3. A dynamic program that offers numerous

opportunities to explore our children’s talents in

music, drama and the performing arts - based on

the wisdom of Vedanta contained in our scriptures

4. Celebration of major festivals, such as

Mahasivaratri, Diwali, Rama Navami, etc., and our

Annual Geeta Chanting Competition

We continue to improve the program so that everyone (children and adults) can obtain the maximum benefit. For example, we plan to continue our program of bringing Samskritam to our children, youth, and adults, offer interactive seminars on topics such as parenting, youth-parent inter-relationships, etc., revitalizing our adult study circle classes, and expand upon the existing seva of Anna Danam with other seva projects. Last, but not the least, we need to invest in the future so that we are no longer dependent on local schools, since that severely restricts the type of programs we are able to sponsor. This means we must grow and make Chinmaya Vrindavan a reality. Poojya Gurudev, Swami Chinmayanandaji, greatly stressed developing a strong identity for our children. He was a master with great vision and He believed that religion and the inquiry into the Divine provided the substance for unification and the true recipe for happiness. As immigrant families nurturing our children in a wonderful country, we have to work within our faith to bind each other closer. Balavihar Guidelines and Expectations

What can participating families expect?

1. Active leadership from our resident acharyas, Swami

Shantanandaji and Swami Siddhanandaji. 2. Knowledgeable and helpful volunteers to assist with

questions and concerns. 3. Vibrant, on-time and efficient operations of all Bala Vihar

and Adult Study Circle classes with vedantic-based instruction.

4. Dissemination of pertinent information about Bala Vihar/Adult Study Circle and other programs via email, web posting (bbnjbalavihar.com), and verbal announcements in a timely and efficient manner.

5. On-site availability of essential books and related items. 6. Celebration of some traditional Hindu Festivals and other

events, in accordance with the rules of the facility. 7. The CMTC may record Bala Vihar activities using various

formats (e.g., still/video camera, etc.) for the purpose of promoting its programs.

8. The CMTC will make every reasonable effort to work with parents to try and accommodate their children with special needs. However, if a mutually acceptable solution still cannot be reached, the CMTC reserves the right to decline/rescind registrations.

9. The CMTC reserves the right to decline/rescind Bala Vihar registration if these guidelines are not followed.

What is expected of the children?

1. Please raise your hand when speaking or asking questions during class or speak with your teacher volunteer after class.

2. Please bring your copy of the “My Prayers” booklet, notebook and pen to each session (younger children may

require crayons, etc. for arts & crafts projects), and any other required books/items requested by the Bala Vihar teacher.

3. Please actively and attentively participate in class and during scheduled festivals/other events.

4. Please make the necessary effort to prepare for upcoming class or event. (This will be limited so that there is no conflict with regular academic commitments).

5. Please be silent during appropriate times and participate in arati and pledge.

6. Any form of bullying confirmed by the CMTC will not be tolerated. Should such an incident occur, the CMTC reserves the right to take appropriate action up to and including declining/rescinding Balavihar registration.

What is required of all parents/adults?

1. Please submit a completed registration form and paid dues within 2 weeks of joining the program. All children attending Bala Vihar must be registered.

2. Please arrive on-time (i.e., 9:20 AM for a 9:30 AM Assembly start time) and stay through the program. Dropping off

and picking up of children requires written consent

from CMTC. Any/all such requests must be explained to and approved by the CMTC.

3. At all times except in the classroom, children attending Bala Vihar are the responsibility of their parents or the emergency contact listed on the registration form.

4. Any request to decline participation in the CMTC’s efforts to record its programs must be made in writing with explanation provided for consideration.

5. Parents whose children have special needs must notify the CMTC in writing for consideration prior to submitting their registration.

What is requested of the parents/adults?

1. Please take an active interest in your children’s classes and support their participation in events.

2. Please make every effort to stay for arati, pledge, and prasad.

3. Please discuss any concerns or suggested improvements to the program with a member of the volunteer team (e.g., your child’s Bala Vihar teacher volunteer, Study Circle lead, or the Bala Vihar coordinator).

4. Please check the web site (www.bbnjbalavihar.com) for any last minute cancellations due to bad weather (e.g., when there is significant snow, ice, hail, rain), other emergencies, etc.

5. Please treat school property with care, keep it clean and help your children understand the same.

What can parents/adults do to help?

1. Bring prasad for Bala Vihar and related events. 2. Volunteer for activities, e.g., functions, events, etc
