FINISHING APPLICATIONUSING BB1/PSR VALVETO CONTROL PRESSURE
BB1/PSR and QB1/PSR pressurecontrol valves combine Proportion-Air’s closed loop electronic pressurecontrol valve and ProAir seriesvolume booster into one completepackage. This package usesProportion-Air’s patented technologyfor pressure control. Output pressureis proportional to an electrical signalinput.
BB1/QB1Theory of Operation
At the heart of this package is theBB1 or QB1 closed loop electronicpressure control valve. The BB1 orQB1 is a complete closed loopsystem consisting of valves, manifold, housing and electroniccontrols. Pressure is controlled byuse of two internal solenoid valves. One valve functions as inlet control, the other as exhaust. The pressureoutput is measured by an internalpressure transducer and provides afeedback signal to the electroniccontrols. This feedback signal iscompared with the command signalinput. A difference between the twosignals causes one of the twosolenoid valves to open, allowingflow in or out of the BB1 or QB1.Accurate pressure is maintained bycontrolling these solenoid valves. Thecontrol pressure functions as thepilot signal to the volume booster.
Command Signal
Command signal inputs come in oneof three choices; analog-voltage,analog-current, or 8 bit digital (BBvalve only). Analog driven units givevirtually an infinite range of outputpressures from zero to full scale.Digital driven units give 256increments of pressure includingzero. For multiplexing situations(many digital valves run off the samebuss line) there is a digital BB1latching version. This option allowsthe user to address which valves areto respond to signal changes, whileothers maintain present state. Anadditional latch bit is required withdigital latching valves.
Monitor Feedback
The BB1 has an optional monitorsignal available for output to a panelmeter or for data acquisition needs, and a one-bit digital TTL signal. Theanalog output is a buffered signalfrom the internal pressuretransducer. This signal representspilot pressure of the volume booster. The TTL output is a conditionalon/off signal to use for diagnosticpurposes. This signal is LOW whenthe pressure is within 1% of finalsetting. The outputs can function aslogic information to other controls inthe process.
BB valves come with a red LED lightto indicate power to the valve. Whenordered with the monitor option, anadditional green LED is alsosupplied. This light indicates thevalve’s pressure status. A bright
green glow shows that desiredpressure has been reached.
QB series products come standardwith a 0-10 Vdc monitor output orwith 4-20 mA as an option. Thisoutput is an electrical signaloriginating from the internal pressuresensor used in the control circuit ofthe QB1 valve.
PSR Regulator
The second component in thissystem is the ProAir series volumebooster. This air piloted boosterfunctions as a slave valve to the BB1or OB1. It provides controlledpressure at a higher flow rate than ispossible directly through the BB1 orOB1. An auxiliary air line is plumbedfrom the inlet of volume booster tosupply pressure to the BB1 or QB1.

This chart shows the linear characteristics of theBB1/PSR or QB1/PSR when given a rampsignal from 0-10 volts. Characteristics would besimilar for 4-20 mA units.
Time for BB1/PSR or QB1/PSR to fill/exhaust aclosed chamber. Step command signal issuperimposed over pressure trace. Time isdetermined by difference between commandsignal and pressure achieved.
