Berner-Garde at Fall Fun Day
Thto collect, maintain and disseminate information about genetic diseases observed in the Bernese Mountain Dog. The Berner-Garde Foundation is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt, not-for-profit corporation.
The mission of the Berner-Garde Foundation (BGF) isto ensure that all Bernese Mountain Dogs (BMD) have a long and healthy lifespan of twelve-fourteen years.
To accomplish this goal, the incidence of severalserious hereditary diseases must be decreased and, over time, eliminated. It is the hope of all who know and love a Berner that the work of the BGF will lead not only to an understanding of geneticdisease(s) in an individual dog, but also in the BMD breed as a whole.
The Berner-Garde Foundation was estab-lished to collect, maintain and disseminate information about genetic diseases ob-served in the Bernese Mountain Dog. The Berner-Garde Foundation is comprised of a voluntary Board of Directors, several com-mittees and, at its core, a computerized database. The database contains informa-tion which has been compiled over manyyears from voluntary submissions of data from owners and from other public sources of information, including the OrthopedicFoundation for Animals (OFA) and the Ca-nine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF).
Information in the Berner-Garde Founda-tion database is available to all owners, Bernese Mountain Dog clubs, both national and international, veterinarians, research-ers and other appropriate users who are working to reduce genetic disease in the BMD.
Access is through the Berner-Garde Foun-dation’s website at www.bernergarde.org. Research proposals are handled on a case-by-case basis by the Board of Directors.
A breed-specific database can reveal health trends before they might otherwise be noted by any one individual. By pooling data, it is possible to identify common concerns that would not be discernible from more limited information based on only a few dogs. This is why the breed-specific database is so valuable.
The BGF serves those who need support and in-formation on BMD health issues. Most individual breeders choose to have small kennels, making it difficult for them to collect adequate data for breeding decisions. The Berner-Garde Foundation facilitates communication among breeders and aids in the identification of carriers of inherited problems. Breeders can reduce genetic disease in their dogs by considering the health status of sib-lings and offspring at the same time they are se-lecting for good temperament and type. Only byworking together and sharing information openly can any long-term control of geneticdisease be achieved on a breed-wide basis.
To accomplish the Berner-Garde Foundation’s mission, all BMDs must be included in the data-base. If you own a Bernese Mountain Dog please make it your responsibility to voluntarily submit data on each dog, regardless of whether the dog will be bred. Reporting should begin at the time of birth. Every breeder is encouraged to submit data on every puppy born. Periodically, review your dog’s data in the database to update and check for accuracy. Data submissions are made on line at the Berner-Garde website or forms can be re-quested from the Berner-Garde File Manager.
• Blood draws for Genetic Health Studies Blood draws will again be performed by
veterinarian Dr. Sara Jacobsen, as well as Dr. Laurie Brown. We’ll stay as long as we need to, to collect blood and cheek swabs from as many Berners as possible!
It is only necessary to donate blood/DNA once, so if your dog has already donated blood previously there is no need to donate again, though Berner Garde is happy to get fresh samples from our very oldest berners 10+ years old. VETERANS (7+ years old) will receive special priority treatment - they may jump to the head of the line!
Sign-up is now open for the BMDCNV Berner-Garde Repository Clinic to be held at Fall Fun Day. Use this form to sign up: http://goo.gl/forms/qD29y2gS2v
*ALL* Bernese Mountain Dogs registered in Berner - Garde are encouraged to participate!
• Register your Berner in Berner - Garde today! If your Berner doesn’t have a Berner - Garde number,
please consider registering your Berner today! Here is the Submit Data page, just fill in the “dog submission”
online form to the best of your ability. - http://bernergarde.org/home/submitdata.aspx. And if you have any questions there is a memo box on the submission form, the BG operators are super helpful and very prompt!

Foster Homes Needed! Please help Berner, Inc. rehome our deserving rescued Berners!
The following are different foster opportunities that we run across. Perhaps you can provide a spot in your home for the scenario that works best for you?
Adoption-Ready BernersAdoption-ready Berners in foster care
do not need any special care or training. These Berners are “easy-care” Berners who fit into most Berner households. We get a regular stream of adoption applicants, but they may not be the right ones for the Berners we have in rescue at a given time. In this case, our adoption-ready Berners may spend just a few days to several weeks in foster care while we search for the best homes for them.
Temporary Foster StopsSome adoption-ready Berners stay in their original
homes while we look for the right adopters. In those cases, we may need only a short-term foster for a couple
of days to a week while we arrange transfer of the Berners to their new homes. Rehoming a dog involves many people with conflicting schedules and can require many travel miles. Our Temporary Fosters help us with managing those tricky situations of getting the dogs transferred to their new homes.
Special Care BernersSome of our Berners come into rescue needing special
care for health or behavior issues. Some are “quick fixes”; for example, some of our rescues just need time to recuperate from spay/neuter surgery. Some rescues are “under-two-year-olds” who need basic “good manners” training but have no major issues.
Long-term FostersMost long-term fosters are those with serious
behavior and health problems. For example, a foster

may help a Berner with a disability go through physical therapy. Behavior issues present the most challenging of foster situations. Berners may come into rescue with behavior issues such as fear, shyness, on-leash reactivity and separation anxiety. Fosters work with these Berners, and with trainers if needed, to help them overcome their fears.

Chrissy - October 19, 2008To my silly, bouncy, Christmas Bear.... Happy 7th Birthday! Where has the time gone? I remember picking out a puppy. You dragged my camera away. That was it! I love you so much! After Gita, I never thought I’d have another heart dog. You are very special, and I am quite lucky! Thank you Eileen for letting me have her!

If it wasn’t for Super-sniffer Betruf Celtic Trinity with her special powers, Ariel may have been celebrating her 13th birthday in heaven instead of with us.
Lucky 13 for us, Trini’s nose knows. Trinity was constantly sniffing one area of Ariel’s mouth. They removed a malignant melanoma. But Trini kept sniffing even after that. The vet went back in, removed the lump and Ariel got a clean bill of health!
Ariel earned her NW1 title at 10, but 1-year-old Trinity saving her big sister means more than all the titles in the world.
Best gift ever!! Two sweet berner girls to hug and hold tight.Happiest of birthdays to our Amazing Ariel. Aren’t you glad we got you that nosey puppy?

Reminder...
Canine allergies can be caused by a bevy of different sources, but atopy, or seasonal allergies, are specific and happen at specific times of the year. For instance, if your dog is allergic to ragweed, he will most likely display allergy symptoms in the fall. Dogs with allergies to tree pollen will probably have allergy symptoms in the spring, specifically in April and May. If dust mites are the culprit, your pet is more symptomatic in winter when windows are closed up tight and less time is spent outside. If your canine friend exhibits any of the following symptoms, you'll want to get him in to the vet so he (and you) can start getting some relief.
Symptoms of Fall Canine Allergies1. Ears You may notice some discharge from the ear canal
accompanied by odor and redness. Your dog will probably spend a great deal of time scratching the affected ear or rubbing it on the furniture.
2. Face The areas around your dog’s muzzle, chin and eyes
may be red and in various stages of hairlessness due to his constant scratching. He may use his paws to rub at these delicate areas or use the furniture to find relief from the itching.
3. Skin Your dog’s skin will most likely be red and inflamed.
It may have crusty, scaly patches that look infected and smell bad. He will probably lick and scratch these spots constantly, especially the ones on his sides, belly, elbows and groin areas.
4. Hair Chances are, if your pet suffers fall allergies, his once
soft, luscious fur is stiff and brownish in color due to all the licking he does. There may be bald spots in his coat due to his scratching, licking and rubbing on the furniture to find relief.
5. Feet The feet often experience the worst of the itching
symptoms. The pads of the feet may be inflamed and red, with the fur around them discolored from the licking and biting. They may even be infected and smell bad. Your dog probably spends a great deal of time biting and chewing his feet.
Seasonal Canine AllergiesOther Types of Canine AllergiesIf your dog suffers allergy symptoms at specific times of the year, he’s probably suffering seasonal allergies. However, if he suffers allergies at random times or never seems to get better it could be that he’s suffering from another type of canine allergy.
Contact dermatitis - less common in dogs, but it does occur. This type of allergy causes symptoms when the animal comes in contact with something he’s allergic to such as carpet, cleaners or plastic.
Food allergies - a more common form of allergy in dogs, can wreak havoc in your dog’s immune system at the same time seasonal allergies rear their ugly heads. It can be difficult determining the cause of your pet’s
allergies if this is the case. One way to tell if the allergy is food related is if your pet has increased bowel movements of softer stools than normal. If you’re still unable to determine the cause, a quick trip to the veterinarian is always your best bet.

Our rescue boy Spenser passed away July 30th. He was 12 years, 2 months and 7 days old, having been born 5/23/03. We had him for 8 years and he turned into a wonderful dog. We miss him terribly, but he had been going downhill for awhile; since before the passing of our Berner girl Ebbie in February 2014. Spencer now joins her at the Rainbow Bridge, where they can play to their heart’s content.
