Presentation on Institutional Standard Assessment

Institutional Standard As-sessment” meeting was held on 8th November 2017. It was presented by Dr. Mohammed Quamruddin Ansari, an Asst. Professor, Foundation Depart-ment. The presentation was held in the hopes of steering the college towards spreading awareness of the Quality As-surance preparations going on within the college. The pre-sentation was well-informed, and focused on the many ef-forts toward quality assurance and maintenance within the college headed by out es-teemed Dean, Dr. Modi Juma Al Ghailani. Dr. Ansari stated that our aim should be to gear all our resources towards the highest quality of each depart-ment, to attain excellence and improve upon what already exists. Furthermore, it should be a habit, not an act; as lik-ened to the obsession of a craftsman, as our focus must be the best and no less.

He also added that all parts of the college work toward it’s betterment including alumni and other stakeholders out-side the college, that provide a support system and a way to ensure responsibility toward the betterment of quality to-wards out college as they are our voice to the outside world. Additionally, this voice also

provides us with awareness of how we can improve and reach the goal set for us through var-ious methods such as SWOT Analysis and ADRI Quality Assurance Approaches.Head-ing this strategic planning would be Ms. Rejni Gurufila as head of Quality Assurance for Bayan College; and other members under her including the various departments and other selected members. We must aim to support one an-other and inculcate the culture and belongingness within and outside the college. As Dr. Modi has rightly stated, we must aim to make it the best college in Oman (maybe even the ‘Harvard’ of Oman) and coordinate our efforts to-wards the best quality.

Dr Lina Ibrahim HOD of Department of En-glish Studies presented a paper titled Zaaba-lawi: Nostalgia or Search for Spirituality, as part of the College Professional Development Program. The presentation was an attempt to answer whether Naguib Mahfouz, the author, meant the story as a search for the divine or as nostalgia for a beautiful past. The presenter highlighted the changes that were taking place in the Egyptian society as it was moving rapidly towards modernization. The characters presented demonstrated how the society did in fact become a society that valued material gains more than spiritual ones. As the hero moved forward in search for Zaabalawi he

moved far from the material level to the spiri-tual level. The characters who represented the change that was taking place were Sheik Qa-mar the lawyer, the Book Seller and the Local Sheikh. They were all very much involved in life here and now to the extent that they had forgot-ten Zaabalawi. Hope is regained when the hero meets The Calligrapher and Music Composer.

Here art symbolizes spirituality. Since we are now with creative people Zaabalawi is remem-bered as a source of inspiration to both charac-ters, who in their turn lead the hero to his final destination, Sheik Wanas. It is while he is in the company of Sheik Wanas, unconscious that he finally meets Zaabalawi and for a short mo-

ment experiences content and happiness. The experiences a pain-free moment, after which Zaabalawi disappears and he has to continue his quest. Members of the Deanship, English Studies, Media, & Foundation Departments at-tended the presentation. Once the presentation was over the platform was given to the audi-ence for Q.A. Dr. Safwat, Dr. Nader, Dr. Ansari, Mr. Mandua, and Ms. Melani asked some ques-tions that triggered a constructive discussion with the presenter.

TIME THAT TICKS

Education and YouTime Management for Students

THE CULTURE

What is education to you?

It is something that starts a spark-A feeling of thirst for the unknown,It inspires, it motivates, it strengthens. The wheel starts rolling with our birth,Something akin to breathing, drinking, eating-A nourishing that continues even when we sleep,Sometimes in visions, or in awe-inspiring dreams! It’s not all about schooling and choosing universities,It’s not about being successful in the world’s eye. It’s about learning and perceiving what is right- It’s being true to yourself, whatever others say. It’s vital to know your talents, your gifts-Only then can you tend, feed, to help grow.Every child needs a helping hand to support,A mature mind to perceive, guide and counsel.

How would you wish your child to grow?Uncontrolled and dark as a tropical forest-An unending maze of bushes, trees, grappling vines,A confusion that defies the laws of birth, growth and death?Or would you rather have a carefully tended garden,With flowering, fruit-bearing trees, cool welcoming shades.Fragrant flower beds, green grass, a winding cobbled walkAnd a white trellis to keep out the wild and the unknown? The choice is always yours, the life is yours,The options are clear and so are the outcomes.Don’t blindly follow the path of peers and friends-Your destinies are as different as your fingerprints! -Bahulayan Madhu Govind

The culture of Oman is steeped in the reli-gion of Islam. Oman has developed its own subset of Islam, known as Ibadhism.

Although Arabic is Oman’s official language, there are native speakers of different dia-lects, as well as Balochi, or off-shoots of Southern Arabian, a Semitic language only distantly related to Arabic.

Swahili is also widely spoken in the country due to the historical relations between Oman and Zanzibar. The dominant indigenous lan-guage is a dialect of Arabic and the country has also adopted English as a second lan-guage. Almost all signs and writings appear in both Arabic and English. Oman is famous for its khanjar knives, which are curved dag-

gers worn during holidays as part of cere-monial dress. Today traditional clothing is worn by most Omani men. They wear an ankle-length, collarless robe called a dish-dasha that buttons at the neck with a tassel hanging down.

Traditionally this tassel would be dipped in perfume. Today the tassel is merely a tradi-tional part of the dishdasha. Omani women have very colourful costumes which vary from region to region. The main components of a woman’s outfit comprise of a dress which is worn over trousers (sirwal) and the head-dress, called the lihaf.

We, Arabs always get targeted in the world, but now we refuse to be targeted from the western media as a face of terrorist around the world. On international platform, in many films and Television shows, even in animations, Ar-abs have a specific face with negative orien-tation. Many movies on Arabic countries like Egypt and the people there, desert with semi destroyed houses and poor people lives there. Recently, a great example on this is Fast and Furious is one of the most successful Holly-wood movies, 7th Part , they shoot a scenes in Abu Dhabi were they show a desert with camels and suddenly a huge city with fancy and luxuri-ous lifestyle which is not always right. Similarly, FOX has two of most popular animated series : “The Simpsons” and “family guy” through which Television shows contain a huge amount of ste-reotypes against a lot of nations and religious. One more example is there like one of Simp-sons episode shows an Arab tripe were the kids are holding AK-47 Assault rifle while saying a phrase "lalalalal" ,in family guy they use the same phrase but in Arab society, we have no idea about what is this phrase is mean. Some the offensive images in family guy is when they show an alarm called “Palestinian alarm clock " this alarm explode while announcing “Allah Ak-bar ". ESPN Television, Every year they broad-cast the final of Super bowl which is one of the most watched events during the year in USA , before the match and after the first half ESPN shows a Coca Cola Ad which shows an Arabic guy with his camels in a race against bike rid-ers to a giant coca cola can, at the end of the advertisement they show a vote option to select who will arrive first but there is no option for the Arabic guy, and that will create an image

about the Arabs that they can’t be competitors, as per data collected video watched by nearly 10 million viewers . In the last, I must say that the picture world media or better to say west-ern media are presenting in front of the world for Arabic media culture and society is really not real and very Mis-calculated and Mis-pre-sented, that way Arab society and people be-ing represented is giving wrong and unethical picture of media.I must say that the media and media professionals must be responsible and present a correct image of the Arabic society, we are living in the society where we accept people and culture of entire world, we allowed world people of diverse culture and religion, we accept all religion. In a country like Oman, we have religious place for various cultures. Thus, in the end I must re-quest western media that time has come where world need to change mindset, Arab society are growing technologically, socially and academic and democratically, today we have everything, we accept that we have traditional culture, but this is a core of our society, bedsides world are coming to our country for business and market-ing, means overall, we are developing with a great pace and exceptional rate, so kindly present the real Arabs not the fictitious Arabs.

Advertising is a subject of cre-ativity and commitment. Advertis-ing plays an important role in the daily life of people as it not only promotes awareness among social capitals but also it enhances the behavioral change in the consum-ers. This subject is very interesting and full of scientific approaches, thus it’s better to say here that it is a backbone of managements as it focuses on analysis, planning, con-trol and decision making activities.

As far as my opinion on ad-vertising are concern, it is a growing field of communication and I must say that adver-tising is a subject of extremely very wide scope and bright future as now a we are living in a world of commercialization or its better to say that our society has a great influence of LPG (Liberalization, Privatization and Globalization) and Advertis-ing is associated with each and every part of LPG and society. The reason, Advertising is very much beneficial for the pro-ducers, traders, consumers and countries economy and that’s why it is in a great de-mand in market and industry.

Lastly, Advertising is a rising sun of management with endless scope and wide range of employment op-portunities. Students must choose this subject for the bright growth and better professional future.

-Dr. Abhishek Singh

There is no doubt that the main problems faced by contemporary societies and the most serious impact on the social and economic entity, the phenomenon of unemployment which afflict the world and humanity as a whole.

Therefore, it was necessary to give focus on this phe-nomenon, and need a great deal of attention and thinking of economists, to reveal the causes and motives in order to find ways to have effective management of this menace. There is a serious need to bring out the people from the most serious ills of society.

It has gained attention on the phenomenon of unemploy-ment in both theory descrip-tive, and realistic application. Numerous doctrines and theories to-ward varied forms and manifestations, and different causes and justifi-cations and swept the effects and harms the individual and society and the state. Islam urges mankind to work and earn, and the earning without effort are forbidden, so that one cannot sit idle without work.

The unemployment leads to corruption and disordered in

the society. Unemployment may cause economic, social and humanitarian related risk, if you do not find effec-tive management of this then the danger would exacerbat-ed on the individual, family

and society. The question remains the most prominent: how to deal with the labor market, rampant unemploy-ment?

The following may help to over-come this menace.•Educations institutions need to impart skills which are in demand in the job market

• Graduates need to take jobs in private sector• Encouraging indigenous industries and discourage imports

These few steps can bring greater change in counties economic landscape.
