    The benefactor Professor Otto Bayer

Professor Otto Bayer, who was not related to the family

that founded the Bayer Group, joined the company in

1933, when he became head of the Central Scientific

Laboratory. Although Otto Bayer was only 32 years old at

that time and the youngest member of the team, he soon

succeeded in making a name for himself: his greatest

achievement was ultimately the invention of polyurethane

chemistry. He influenced the development of this

versatile family of plastics for many years until his death

at the age of nearly 80. Thanks to the chemical and

entrepreneurial achievements of the inventor of

polyurethanes, the Bayer Group still holds a large share

of the world market for these materials.

Sonja Tattermusch used he r scholarship rom the

Bayer oundations to supplement her biochemistr y

studies in Witten-Herdecke with a research semester

at the amous Pasteur Institute in Paris.

and pharmaceutical industry as a whole. Serving for

many years as Director General of Farbenfabriken

vorm. Friedr. Bayer & Co., his influence on nearly all

developments in the various parts of the company

was instrumental in Bayers progress on the road to

becoming an international company. The Bayer ex-
