Positive outlook for property market

THE property market in Christchurch’s coastal and hill suburbs, particularly Mount Pleasant, is looking very positive, with good demand, real estate agent Rae Manson says.

Demand was coming mostly from locals wanting to stay in the area, or return. Some people had moved to the North Island after the quake, but wanted to come back, the Prier Manson Real Estate director said.

People from outside the area were still a bit nervous about buying because of the shipping containers placed in front of crumbling cliff faces, Ms Manson said, but she didn’t believe that would last.

“Once we’ve had a decent summer and people come down to the beach and enjoy what the area provides, that nervousness will disappear as time goes by.”

However, for people looking to buy in the Bay Harbour area now, there was a shortage of

listings.Ms Manson said while land on Mt Pleasant

was zoned green, areas of Redcliffs were zoned, blue-green, or TC3.

“It’s not about the land, though. It’s about the foundations. If the house is not damaged, these properties should be fine, and sell.

“We have just a sold a substantial property on TC3 land, and we have an offer on another piece of land.”

However, business development manager of the Harcourts Group, Chris Kennedy, said TC3 land was not without its issues for banks and insurance companies, which could make it more difficult for sellers and buyers. He said prospects were good for those who were selling a property with little or no house or land damage.

The company’s Ferrymead office had been busy over recent weeks, with the agents “writing good numbers”, Mr Kennedy said.

“November has been a tremendous month for Ferrymead.”

In November sales across Christchurch as a whole were up 15 per cent compared to November 2011, although new listings were down 20 per cent. Days taken to sell a property were down to an average of 28, he said.

The drop in listings was counteracted by a rise in auction activity, which was up 23 per cent, Mr Kennedy said.

Confidence was coming back in to the market, with the average price for Christchurch properties up by 12.3 per cent from about $386,700 in November 2011 to $434,351 in November 2012.

In 2013, the estimated 30,000 buyers entering the market once red-zoned residents had to leave their homes would have an impact, Mr Kennedy said, and he predicted it would be “a solid, but another hard year”.

New café open in Diamond Harbour

Grant a boost for community gardenSUMNER van Asch Community Garden received a boost recently from dairy giant Fonterra. Awarded as part of the Fonterra Rebuilding Communities Programme, the $1500 grant is being used to purchase equipment for the garden.

The group, led by Sumner resident Bailey Perryman, has been operating from the grounds of van Asch Deaf Education Centre since December 2011 and meets on a weekly basis to tend a productive vegetable and fruit-producing area.

“We lost our original site on Wakefield Avenue as well as the majority of our tools and equipment in the February earthquake so this grant has allowed us to purchase a new shed as well as replace our gardening tools and

wheelbarrow,” Mr Perryman said.The new location of the garden enables both

the local community and students and staff at the school to share the space.

The van Asch students regularly participate in garden activities and were responsible for putting a new shed together.

They are beginning to develop their own learning projects around the garden, whilst community members are learning to communicate with hearing-impaired staff and students as well as hone their own gardening skills.

“We had to come up with a new sign gesture for ‘compost’ as there is no recognised sign for this in New Zealand Sign Language,” Mr Perryman said.

AFTER more than 18 months of planning by former Godley House operator Michelle Anderton and her business partner Jill Martin, Godley Cafe in Diamond Harbour has opened.

The café is situated on the edge of the original Godley House grounds overlooking Lyttelton Harbour.

The doors open out on to a sheltered north-facing deck with views of the harbour and there are also tables set up in the garden. Fully licensed, the cafe serves seasonal homemade fare all prepared on site.

Mrs Martin said the official opening event on December 8 was “fantastic” and since then the business had been going “really well”. Customers had been a mixture of locals and visitors, including cyclists, ferry passengers and “destination

New book tells volunteer fire brigade’s earthquake stories A NEW book documenting the effects of the February 2011 earthquake on Lyttelton and the effort of the town’s volunteer fire brigade has just been released.

Titled The Brigade, it comprises photographs and stories from the members of the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade as told to former brigade member and Lyttelton resident, Alastair Suren.

“I was in Wellington on February 22 for work, and when I heard about it (the earthquake), I got back as soon as I could. My three major concerns were my partner, my brigade and my town,” Mr Suren said.

Arriving around 2am he headed for the brigade premises with his partner, whose organisational skills saw her being asked to take over handling the calls to the service with brigade member Russ Barron.

“That was really cool,” Mr Suren said.He quickly realised the event was much bigger than the

September 2010 quake had been.“There wasn’t the urgency then as there was in February,”

he said. “I also realised this was too big an event not to try and

document. I enjoy photography so I grabbed my camera. At first I found it difficult to take photos, I thought it was a bit voyeuristic, but I realised it was important (to take them).

“I took about 500 shots around the town and of the guys

at work. Being in the fire service gives you a unique view point.”

Mr Suren mentioned to chief fire officer Mark Buckley that he might “get a book out of this”, though he left the photographs on his computer for the next year or so.

“There were other earthquake books out there and I thought people might not be interested in another one.”

At the time, another local publication, Harbour Kitchen, was being updated to reflect the effects of the earthquakes on Lyttelton and co-author Kim Hickford was looking for photos to use.

“I sent her CDs with my photos and she said they brought tears to her eyes and that they were really special. That was the kick up the bum I needed and I started to work on the book with a vengeance.

“During November and December of 2011 I started interviewing the guys.”

By that time Mr Suren had moved to Whakatane with his job, though he had found it “very, very difficult to leave”.

“I felt very bonded to Lyttelton and to Christchurch and this gave me the focus to carry on. I continued with the interviews through February March.”

After compiling the material, he sent it to Ms Hickford, whose husband Jon edited it, with other proof readers also checking it.

The book was then shown to Mr Buckley for his approval, after which it went to print in mid-November.

“It was a huge team effort, and I’m very proud of it,” Mr Suren said.

“It’s more than a book of photographs, it’s telling the story of the volunteers, the importance of volunteers and the importance of helping each other.”

Mr Suren said volunteers, whether they were from the fire brigade, the ambulance or any other volunteer service, couldn’t do it without the support of their families.

“Volunteers have to think about their community as well as their families. That says a huge amount about their dedication.”

He said while volunteers don’t want acknowledgement and find it hard to be publicly thanked, at the same time, it was very rewarding when someone said “thank you for helping”.

“It’s a very rewarding job and I find helping people is a very empowering experience.”

He said the book was important as an historical record of what happened in Lyttelton, and of the emotions of the event, and was also an important way of highlighting the work volunteers do in their community.

A FUN, interactive programme encouraging children to explore and experience the natural local environment has been launched on Quail Island in Lyttelton Harbour.

The programme, Kiwi Ranger, has been launched successfully in eight other spots throughout New Zealand, but Quail Island is the first site close to an urban location, making it easy for families to enjoy.

Kiwi Ranger Quail Island was developed collaboratively by DOC, Shades of Green, Rapaki Runanga and Black Cat Cruises. It was officially launched with a badge ceremony for the children from Tai Tapu School, who were the first rangers to test the programme out.

“Kiwi Ranger is a great way for families to explore new places together and learn something, as well as having heaps of fun and being rewarded for their efforts with a badge,” the communications and engagement advisor for DOC, Sarah Mankelow, said.

“Research shows that childhood experiences with nature play a critical role in determining life attitudes, knowledge and behaviours towards the environment. Kiwi Ranger guides families to make the most of their visit by taking it beyond a mere walk in the park, to an experience worth remembering and treasuring.”

Ms Mankelow said in a world that is becoming increasingly disconnected from nature, DOC wanted to help families fall in love with our natural world again.

Temporary service centre open

School garden vandalised

CHRISTCHURCH City Council has opened a new temporary service centre in Lyttelton.

The council has leased a building at 15 London Street for three years, which has been converted into the temporary service centre. It offers a service centre counter for council payments and Lyttelton-Mt Herbert community board staff are based there. Opening hours are from 9am to 5pm on weekdays.

The Lyttelton Service Centre at 33 Lyttelton Street has been closed since it was damaged in the February 2011 earthquake. A temporary service centre had been based in the Lyttelton Library in London Street, since last year.

The earthquake-damaged Lyttelton Service Centre is one of the council’s 30 priority projects, which it has prioritised for further investigations, funding and, where possible, repairs.

ON Friday 23 November 23, one or more persons entered the school grounds of Our Lady, Star of the Sea School at 45 Colenso Street, Sumner and smashed the urn that had been erected as the centrepiece of the new Serenity Garden.

The school community had been fundraising

for this garden for the past two years. This mindless act of violence has upset the school, the children and the whole community, a school spokesperson said.

If anybody has any information regarding this crime, they are asked to contact the central Christchurch Police Station on 363-7400.

THE empty site on the corner of Main Road and Taupata Street in Redcliffs where the New World supermarket stood is being transformed into a community facility.

Local resident Reg Dalley said he got the “OK” from Foodstuffs to clear the site enabling skateboard ramps and a BMX track to be installed in the middle.

Soil has been acquired for the BMX track and Mr Dalley has encouraged local youngsters to plan it, which they were very excited about, he said.

He sought donations to purchase the timber for constructing the ramps.

The council was supplying garden seats for people to sit on and watch the action, he said.

Nicknamed the OK Corral, the site will be available by request. It is fenced off and won’t be open all the time, due to the risk of vandalism, Mr Dalley said.

“I have the key and groups who want to use it can contact me and I will go and open it for them.”

Mr Dalley’s contact information will be displayed on a sign.

The fence has been decorated with Christmas items, as well as two silver ferns, also obtained through the council.

The installation of the facility does not mean that New World won’t be rebuilding on the site, but there was still a lot to be done in the area before work started on it, Mr Dalley said.

RARE Hector’s dolphin calves have been spotted in Akaroa Harbour recently, which bodes well for a species that is on the endangered list, local cruise operator Paul Bingham says.

“Dolphin calves are the future of a rare species. It’s always exciting to see them in the harbour. You can clearly see the calves’ stripes from being folded up inside mother’s tummy and they are able to swim as soon as they are born,” the managing director of Black Cat Cruises said.

“Mothers, their calves and other females form small nursery pods, which can be witnessed from cruise boats.”

Mr Bingham said no human swimming was allowed with dolphin calves but their mothers sometimes brought their young

offspring close to the large catamarans, perhaps aimed at teaching them how to interact.

“We need to raise awareness of the Hector’s dolphins, and the fact that they are rare and endangered,” Mr Bingham said. “The fact we have newborn calves in the harbour is exciting news and is good for the future of the species.”

The Hector’s dolphin is classified as endangered by the World Conservation Union (IUCN). Because of the specie’s coastal habitat and slow reproductive rate the dolphins are particularly vulnerable to entanglement in fishing gear, especially gill nets.

Dolphins live for up to 20 years, but females only produce one calf every two to four years and do not start breeding until aged seven to nine years.

First cruise ship to arrive Boxing DayBOXING Day signals the first cruise vessel into Lyttelton for the 2012-2013 season with the arrival of the Crystal Symphony. At a length of 238m this will be the longest cruise vessel the port has ever accommodated at No 2 berth in the inner harbour.

The vessel has 12 decks, eight of which are accessible to the 922 passengers it can carry. Earlier this year the ship underwent a two-week extreme makeover undertaken by 1100 workers (including the crew) in Germany. This is part of a five-year plan to redesign every room aboard the award-winning vessel.

In October, Lyttelton Port Company announced the comprehensive review of the cruise-berth development and with enhancement plans around the port continuing the company was unable to accept bookings for the majority of cruise vessels for the 2013/2014 cruise season.

However, it still caters for vessels that can berth in our inner harbour, chief executive Pete Davie said.

“LPC remains committed to the cruise industry, and we are currently working through options for cruise berth development, design, construction and funding,” Mr Davie said.

The Crystal Symphony is one of four scheduled into Lyttelton for the season with the last cruise ship, the Bremen, arriving on March 9, 2013.

EIGHT-year-old Jack Jordan of Diamond Harbour School has been collecting mystery Christmas gifts for disadvantaged children in Canterbury.

“It’s a task we came up together with for his Diamond Challenge - a series of challenges set throughout the year as part of his required schoolwork for Diamond Harbour School,” his mother Kalena Jordan said.

The gifts have been placed in a basket in his classroom (Kotare).

NEW bylaws introduced last year were very well received by most of the boating public, with only a few needing to be told about the new rules, Environment Canterbury Recreational Boating Officer Evan Walker says.

The bylaws make wearing lifejackets compulsory by all people on a vessel six metres or under in length, whenever it is underway (i.e. not tied up or at anchor).

“The bylaws apply in all coastal and inland waters from Kaikoura to the south side of Waitaki River. They are aimed at ensuring public safety on the region’s lakes, rivers and harbours and coastal waters,” Mr Walker said.

Skippers’ responsibilities include having

appropriate safety and communication equipment on board at all times, being aware of weather forecasts and ensuring anyone who drives the vessel is aware of basic give-way rules for the water.

Another key to a successful day out on the water is to ensure you are familiar with the different areas of a waterway (i.e. ski access lanes, no boating areas, five-knot zones, etc.) to ensure everyone remains safe, Mr Walker said.

Around one in six households in New Zealand owns some kind of watercraft, which means that by population size there are up to 95,000 privately owned boats, canoes and jet skis in Canterbury.

“That’s why it’s more important than ever for people to stay safe on the water,” Mr Evans said.

Environment Canterbury staff and boating safety officers will be out and about on the water throughout the summer to educate boaties on the new bylaws and promote high standards of public safety.

St John honours for Lyttelton residentON behalf of the members of the Banks Peninsula Area Committee I would like to wish everyone a merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. I’d especially like to mention and pay tribute to those who will be working during this period, including the members of the emergency services. Thank you for your dedication and commitment.

Speaking of dedication, I would like to mention a St John member whose service to our organisation has recently been acknowledged by the Queen. Brent Stanaway, who is a resident of Lyttelton and a member of the St John Banks Peninsula area committee, was admitted to the Order of St John as an Officer, as part of the St John Honours list (released in November).

St John has its own honours system. Through this, we recognise and reward the hard work and service of our members, by admitting or promoting them to the Order of St John.

St John Honours are sanctioned by Her Majesty the Queen, Sovereign Head of the Most Venerable Order of St John. They are an independent part of the New Zealand Royal Honours System.

The Order of St John, which dates back to the Crusades (circa 1070 AD), was founded in New Zealand in Christchurch in 1885 and has six classes of honour: Bailiff or Dame Grand Cross, Knight or Dame of Justice or of Grace, Commander, Officer, Member and Esquire.

Mr Stanaway and his wife Anne have been long-time supporters of St John Ambulance in Lyttelton through generous financial contribution and valued legal advice. Both are active members of the St John Banks Peninsula Area management committee and recently were awarded their nine-year service certificates by St John in recognition of their service and commitment to the work of St John in the Banks Peninsula community.

We’d like to congratulate Brent for his admission to the order and thank him and Anne for their work in St John for the benefit of our community.

Brent joins three other Lyttelton St John members that hold the same honour, Pete Dawson, Mike Capon and Glenn Cowan.

Chasing pavers

ON the morning of Thursday, November 29, the year eight students of Sumner School could be seen shifting pavers and unearthing worms at the Pebbles Preschool’s new site.

We all volunteered to help Belinda Slade landscape her beloved preschool. Her old location on Campbell Street was red-stickered due to rockfall. She was told she had to relocate in the near future.

We walked from Sumner School to Belinda’s new spot on Nayland St, planning to move the driveway full of pavers. We ended up moving not only the driveway pavers, but we also cleared the side garden and back paths of pavers. In total, the year eight students moved over 400 pavers, saving the preschool over $1000 worth of labour. The 38 students accomplished in two hours what one worker

would have done in about two weeks. As we prepare to leave Sumner School

and head off to high school we feel proud to give back to our community that helped raise us. Everyone found a way to participate even though some got tired or distracted by Belinda’s cat and the two dogs. Everyone agreed that Monte worked extremely hard and showed great leadership. He also carried a record 12 pavers in one load.

Belinda thanked us all by making a delicious morning tea of sweet treats and savouries. Billy Osteen, Belinda and Mrs Smyth co-ordinated what we hope will become an annual tradition of service for year eight students at Sumner School. We all enjoyed working together in unity and can’t wait to see the new preschool up and running!

WHILE the end of the year is nearly upon us, our school has continued to be a busy and vibrant place. Room 5 did an amazing job with their fair on Wednesday, December 12. It was the culmination of a class inquiry focused on financial literacy. Each group had to plan out their stall and cost all their resources. The commitment to their fair was great to see and all children worked very hard in the lead-up, during the fair and in the clean-up. Their focus was to raise money for Aguida, our sponsored child through ChildFund NZ, which they have achieved, with money left to cover another term next year. Thank you to all the families who supported the fair – it was great to be a part of the day.

The hangi was a great success on Friday, December 14 (even with an early callout for the local fire brigade). Many thanks to Tim and

Kalae Webb for all their hard work. By the time this goes to print our final

assemblies will have been and gone and we will have farewelled our year eight students as they embark on the next stage of their learning.

While the end of the year brings changes for us all, we are excited about what we have planned here at Lyttelton West for 2013. We wish all those who are leaving all the best for their future. We know Matthew Thomas will be great as a team leader at his new school. And I know our year eights will meet their challenges in a manner that reflects the West Way.

Swamp or treasure?Tanya Jenkins

A WORKING bee the Sunday before last saw the Charlesworth Reserve being tidied up for the Christmas holiday period. Volunteers spent the afternoon weeding, clearing litter and placing bases around the six newly placed park benches for everyone to enjoy.

So, what’s all the fuss about these 20 hectares of relatively small wetland reserve which, at first glance, looks no more than a somewhat swampy piece of land?

You might be surprised! Charlesworth Wetland Reserve is a small, yet integral part of a bigger picture, a place where fresh water from rivers meets the saline waters of the sea – our Avon-Heathcote Estuary.

Estuaries, being protected from waves and harsh winds by surrounding land formations, provide shelter and homes for large numbers of invertebrates such as crabs, snails, worms and shellfish, which in turn attract large number of birds. Some 100 different bird species use the estuary as a safe place during the moulting

season or as a summer home. A great example of this is the godwit arriving here from Siberia and Alaska every September. Fish species use these sheltered estuaries for nurseries and for

some it’s a migrating path to go further up river.

So, it’s not just a swamp, but in fact a wildlife park. No fences, no entry fees to pay and comprising 700 hectares of bountiful nature’s treasure for us to enjoy. So take a closer look these holidays, take the family and go for a walk, view the birdlife, enjoy windsurfing, boating or take the picnic basket and enjoy one of our city’s most valuable assets – the Avon-Heathcote Estuary.

Treats for Christmas at the market CHRISTMAS opening hours at the Mt Pleasant Farmers Market are 9am to 1pm Saturday, December 22 and December 29, with all the usual fruit, vegetables, fish, home baking and olives and relishes. There are plants for the garden and flowers for the lounge, too.

Jen, who provides delicious Cozinha Goan/Portuguese cooking, is back in Mt Pleasant after her home was repaired, and will have kulkuls, milk toffee and nureos available. What are they, I hear you say. These are traditional Goan Christmas sweets made with milk, nuts and coconut. It is an occasion for family to get together to make these sweets with a lot of labour, love and laughter. I can remember joining in with my mother and aunts every Christmas and we would look forward to making them and of course eating them. Jen and her mother lovingly made these treats for us. On Christmas day these sweets are distributed to neighbours and offered to guests who visit during the Christmas season.

As the year draws to a close we would like to wish all our customers a huge thank you for your kind words and support this year. It is your positive comments that have been so great and your continued support that makes the market so worthwhile.

Huge congratulations to Marty Anderson and Linda Rutland on their Christchurch City EQ Awards, they are an important part of our community market and are always in attendance. Well done to local resident Scott Thelning, too. Their contribution to our community is magnificent, and we thank them.

‘It ain’t over till it’s over’THIS philosophical lyric is by Lenny Kravitz. But we know all about that! What earthquakes rendered unusable or unrepairable has been rendered to rubble or shortly will be. And just as we feel it might be OK to relax a tad, just after 7.15 this morning (December 8) I feel that familiar jiggle, only to discover it wasn’t “our” earthquake but a fairly sizeable shake in the North Island.

Maybe we are on the seismically downhill slide? But a good decision by city councillors last week was not to bet on it. There’s been a precedent! The council-owned buildings, closed as earthquake-prone under their upwardly revised building strength code, speedily set in stone after September 4, 2010, will not be reopened since the (touch wood) earthquake sequence seems to be declining.

What is over, well nearly, is my wait for Fletcher EQR repairs. And with more than a

tinge of sadness, what is also over is my stay at the temporary village in Linwood Park while those repairs were done. The village does appear to have all the ambience of a prison camp, but the fences are actually to accommodate repair refugees’ pets. Good neighbourliness is quickly established since everyone’s in the same boat. And the houses are nicely appointed and, much needed in my time there, cosily warm.

I heartily congratulate the Department of Building and Housing for having the smarts to establish that village and being so considerate and amenable to deal with. And I equally heartily recommend a stay at the village to anyone needing to move out for repairs. DBH have made a silk purse out of EQC’s sow’s ear.

But then there’s that other great saying, by the legendary Anon – “And on the eighth day, God said, ‘She’s all yours, Murphy’”.

Progress shows, but still much to be doneMary JamiesonANOTHER year is nearly over and as we look around Lyttelton we can see progress being made in the rebuild and repair of the town. There is still so much to be done, though, and 2013 should be an interesting year.

Lyttelton Lions and partners held a Lyttelton Lions and partners held a Christmas dinner at the Valley Inn in Heathcote and we enjoyed the fun and friendship. We plan on holding more dinners like this next year so the club is not all work and no play!

I have just read a report from Camp Quality about the Odd Shoe Day held in September. Our club was one of 55 clubs that participated along with nearly 200 businesses

and schools. A total of $50,000 was raised, which is amazing as it was a first-time event. It will be held annually now.

We acted as marshals at the Santa Parade and survived the hot conditions. We have been survived the hot conditions. We have been

marshalling for years and it is a great fun marshalling for years and it is a great fun event for the children of Christchurch.

I attended a performance of Bugsy Malone at Lyttelton Main School. It received rave reviews and I thought

the students were amazing. Our club the students were amazing. Our club is pleased to have helped sponsor this

THERE is no shortage of activities happening in Lyttelton for the lead-up to Christmas. They started with the Holy Trinity Christmas carols on Sunday, December 16, at the Grassy.

On Saturday, December 22, the Farmers Market will offer the opportunity for Christmas shopping. Come early to ensure you get your special treats. Manager Lottie Harris has lots of extra things to tempt you over to Lyttelton for the morning. They include fun activities for children, Christmas wrapping service, carols, great buskers and local musicians. On top of that there will be loads of yummy Christmas items to tempt you. Cherries and strawberries are now in season, plus new potatoes, asparagus and other delicious vegetables to go with festive

meats and fish. There should be something that you’ll be pleased to place on your Christmas table.

There are many opportunities to buy gifts as well. Visit some of the community fundraising stalls for gift ideas at the market. The Lyttelton Information Centre and the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade have locally produced books for sale. Not only will you delight the recipient, but you’ll also add a few extra dollars into local fundraising initiatives. The Grassy Market and the Garage Sale in Oxford Street will also provide opportunities for Christmas cheer as will our pop-up and permanent shops.

Christmas Eve in Lyttelton will be celebrated with the now traditional family gathering at the Petanque Club. This was such a success last year. Keep your eyes peeled for posters. This year the headline act is The Eastern with performances from Lindon Puffin, Devilish Mary and the Holy Rollers and the Johnny Cash Tribute. From 5pm to 8pm this will be a great time to celebrate the festive season as a community.

The New Year will see the return of the Lyttelton Harbour Information Centre and toilets to their former home in Oxford St. That will be a nice Christmas present for the Timebank, our volunteers, visitors and the town in general.

Governors Bay Hotel recently. We were happy to subsidise the lunch and it was great to see nearly 50 people enjoying the delicious meal.

Two of our members attended a meeting with the planning committee of the Lyttelton Urban Down Hill event. This will be held on March 16 next year and already has attracted several overseas cyclists. Our club will be part of the catering section and it promises to be a major event in the town. Watch this space for more news next year.

I hope Lyttelton turns on a warm sunny day on the 25th and I hope all Bay Harbour News readers have a pleasant and happy day.

Surf picks up in early December

THE weather patterns seem to have changed for the better this month. After a cold and flat November the surf suddenly picked up on December 2 and has been reasonably consistent ever since. Most of the swells have been small and short-lived but at least there’s been waves and lots of quality days too with clean conditions and some great-shaped sandbanks around. Taylors was as good as it gets on December 5. It was a hot, blustery nor-west day, three to four-foot peaks all across the bay and the wind funnelling offshore down the valley. All the other beaches were blown out but Taylors was pumping. Every man and his board was out there, but there were still plenty of waves to go around.

The water temperature jumped up quickly when the weather changed and is now a comfortable 18 degrees Celsius. I’ve even seen a few people out in board shorts at times.

Point Surf Team (PST) held their first beach event in a few years. The day was warm and sunny at Taylors Mistake. The surf didn’t quite come to the party but there were still some fun little waves for the groms. A tag team event was won by the Red team. The groms competition was won by Mia, with Finn second, Gala third and Kimberley fourth. Thanks to Dale at Skull Candy for donating some prizes. Next year will be PST’s 30th anniversary so look out for more

events in 2013.Sumner longboarders held their first old

mal competition for the season and their Christmas party recently. Clean, one to two-foot conditions at Stoke Street were perfect for the old mal boards. ‘Old mal’ is short for old Malibu and the boards are replicas of the traditional nine-foot-plus longboards of the

1960s. Ambrose McNeill won the event with Seb Johnson second, Steve Andrews third and Tim Clements fourth.

The World Tour of Surfing came to a dramatic end in the last few days. The Pipeline Masters event was the final of the year and lived up to expectations with pumping six to 10-foot pipeline in Hawaii and an exciting battle for the world title between Kelly Slater and Joel Parkinson. At the time of writing the event hadn’t finished, but by the time you read this there will be a new surfing world champion. Check it all out on aspworldtour.com.

Grading took three weeks to complete and the first day of normal competition didn’t start until week five at Rawhiti Domain.

This year the Sumner Running Club – Juniors has experienced a marked increase in membership particularly in the seven and under, eight and nine-year-old groups, and as a result a number of these groups are a competitive force in the points competition.

Returning athletes Thomas and Meg Webley, John Wells, Abby and Blake Theobald, Sam Caldwell and Thomas Andrews continue with their good form. Several records have already been claimed: Thomas Webley (800m), John Wells (discus), Sam Caldwell (1200m walk),

Tamzin Jones (1000m walk) and Courtney Quinn (shotput).

Along with individual club records, four relay records have also tumbled. The nine boys (4 x 100m) was the first to go, run by Blake Theobald, Charlie Stenburg, Beth Hunter and John Wells. Not to be outdone, the eight girls (Natasha Frost, Millie Edmond, Natasha Lind and Luca Tracey) set one, even after dropping the baton, and then the 11 boys (Josh Edmond, George Pierce, Harri Langworthy and Thomas Andrews) set one, too. The 1600m medley relay, is only held once in the season. For the second year

The original Café Metro on the corner of Colombo and Kilmore streets was a victim of the February 2011 earthquake. Sonja’s family then opened the Merivale Café Metro about one year ago in Papanui Road and are about to open another Café Metro in St Albans, on the corner of Cranford and Westminster streets in early January.

Sonja’s family has also started their own coffee roasting company called New City Roasters, and all the cafes and Strawberry Fare are using the blend, Blackbird. The roastery is attached to a new café, The Woolston Daily, which is open weekdays 7.30am until 4pm at 3/204 Cumnor Terrace, Woolston.

One secret to the success of Ferrymead’s Café Metro is their delicious range of cabinet food which is all lovingly created on-site.

Savoury and sweet muffins are perfect for a relaxing morning or afternoon tea, including one that is covered with berries and served with a dollop of cream cheese.

Lamb with red wine and chicken and mushroom pies go out the door as soon as they are made, along with the prawn spring rolls. For a treat there is a massive cabinet

of sweet things. Being licensed means that Café Metro

customers can also enjoy a glass of wine or beer with their lunch.

They are open all through the Christmas and New Year season, only closed on Christmas Day. If you are in need of Christmas presents they have plenty to offer, such as the popular basil, mint or coriander vinaigrette, relishes, jams, chutneys, marmalade or tea, and these have also been made into hampers. Blackbird coffee is available to take home in 250g to 1kg, beans, plunger or espresso.

Café Metro has been in their Ferrymead home at 4a/23 Humphries Drive, opposite the wind surfers, for six years in a wonderfully safe building with outdoor seating overlooking the estuary.

Parking is plentiful and they are open from 7am until 5pm Monday to Friday and

8am until 5pm Saturday and

Sunday.

The poinsettia’s origins date back five centuries to Mexico. The Aztecs called it the star flower, while in Peru

and parts of Chile the poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) is widely known as Crown of the Andes.

Legend has it the plant’s association with Christmas began in the 16th century in Mexico. A charming story is told of Pepita, a poor Mexican girl who had no gift to present the Christ Child at Christmas Eve services. As Pepita walked slowly to the chapel with her cousin Pedro, her heart was filled with sadness rather than joy. “I am sure, Pepita, that even the most humble gift, if given in love, will be acceptable in his eyes,” said Pedro consolingly.

Not knowing what else to do, Pepita knelt by the roadside and gathered a handful of common weeds, fashioning them into a small bouquet. Looking at the scraggly bunch of weeds, she felt more saddened and embarrassed than ever by the humbleness of her offering.

She fought back a tear as she entered the small village chapel. As she approached the altar, she remembered Pedro’s kind words: “Even the most humble gift, if given in love, will be acceptable in his eyes.”

She felt her spirit lift as she knelt to lay the bouquet at the foot of the nativity

scene. Suddenly, the bouquet of weeds burst into blooms of brilliant red and all who saw them were certain that they had witnessed a Christmas miracle. From that day on, the bright red flowers were known as the Flores de Noche Buena (Flowers of the Holy Night), for they bloomed each year during the Christmas season.

Later, the plant was named poinsettia after Joel Roberts Poinsett, the United States ambassador to Mexico, who introduced the plant to his country in 1825.

In the US, National Poinsettia Day is marked on December 12, the date Poinsett died, but its purpose is to enjoy the beauty of this popular holiday plant.

The largest breeder of poinsettias is Ecke Ranch in California, home of the world’s leading poinsettia variety ‘Prestige’.

The most popular red poinsettia sold in New Zealand, ‘Prestige’ was selected for its eye-catching, vibrant, dark-red colouring, which doesn’t fade like some of its predecessors. Its ability to hold on to its shape and colour for long periods of time enhance its value as an indoor colour option over the summer months.

Poinsettias are available everywhere, from florists, garden centres, supermarkets and hardware stores.

Heralded as the “Christmas plant”, poinsettia isthe quintessential indoor plant for the festive season,

Where to place: Poinsettias thrive in a bright, well-lit room but away from direct sunlight. They prefer a spot away from draughts and cool breezes, particularly air-conditioning units, which have a tendency to dry out the air and poinsettia leaves readily lose moisture. Care: Less is more when watering poinsettias; rather than giving them a drizzle every day, it’s recommended allowing the soil to dry out between drinks, then water deeply and thoroughly. Too much water and they can collapse from mildew-related issues. Poinsettias do not need a lot of fertilising as they are generally treated like a bunch of flowers and discarded when the colours fade in autumn. In saying this, they can be repotted, cut back and fertilised with a general fertiliser once they have finished flowering in autumn.

handBook and masTer Plan 2013 - PuBliC ConsulTaTion

The Christchurch City Council is seeking input from the public, stakeholder groups and individuals through this public consultation on its:(i) proposed Cemeteries Bylaw for the Christchurch City district;(ii) Christchurch City Council Cemeteries Handbook; and(iii) a strategic Cemeteries Master Plan.

The purpose of the proposed Bylaw is to allow the Council to set rules for the operation and management of cemeteries it owns or administers.

The Bylaw will not apply to any other cemetery, crematorium, burial ground or urupa that is under the control of another organisation.

Alongside the proposal for the new Bylaw, the Council plans to adopt by resolution a Cemeteries Handbook of Terms and Conditions that sets out rules relating to activities and behaviour in cemeteries or otherwise relating to cemeteries.

The draft Master Plan 2013 provides a vision that sets the direction for the development and management of these cemeteries for the next 50 years.

We would like to receive comments on any aspect of the above documents and the cemetery provisions in the city.

As another year draws to a close may I, on behalf of the Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board and associated support staff, extend to you our best wishes for an enjoyable Christmas and Happy New Year.

It is acknowledged for many in our community life is still quite difficult as they continue grappling to restore some form of normality in what have been unprecedented circumstances, and compounded in some cases by the proposal for Education Renewal in greater Christchurch, announced by the Minister of Education. The Board has met with schools and principals to offer support in the consultation being undertaken with their communities on the proposals and will continue this support in 2013.

There has been a number of positive developments in the ward throughout the year. The Linwood Village Master Plan has been adopted by the Christchurch City Council and consultation has just concluded on the Draft Sumner Village Centre Master Plan, which was community led and developed with a joint advisory group made up of members from the community, two Community Board representatives and Council staff. Also, as part of the Council Suburban Centres Programme, the Interim Draft Ferry Road/Main Road Master Plan (Phase one — Fitzgerald Avenue to Ferrymead Bridge) has been adopted and the community will be able to have its say in February 2013.

The Board has agreed that the Christchurch Coastal Pathway Project is its priority capital project. Following an allocation this year of $50,000 by the Council for initial funding and project work, a feasibility study for the proposed

six kilometre pathway is being completed as a community partnership between the Council and the Christchurch Coastal Pathway Group. The Board has indicated continued support in the development of the coastal pathway by way of its input to the Council’s 2013-22 Long Term Plan.

In 2012, the Board has continued to support and celebrate young people in the Hagley/Ferrymead ward through the Youth Development Fund. Over 20 young people received grants towards their national or international representation, personal development and growth this year. Our congratulations to Sophia Batchelor, a recipient of a 2012 Hagley/Ferrymead WPASC Swimmer Scholarship, who has won the Canterbury Sports Award Young Sports Woman of the Year 2012 and, at the Zonta Sports Awards, won the award for the most outstanding individual achievement by a young sportswoman specialising in one sport.

I would also like to acknowledge and thank the management of the Woolston Club Inc for allowing the use of their boardroom for the Board to meet in following the closure of the Linwood Service Centre. This gesture is appreciated.

As part of this fund the Board has also established a Youth Development Fund, to support young people in the ward and their efforts, achievement and potential.Strengthening Communities Fund – the Board allocates this fund to support community focused organisations whose projects contribute to the strengthening of community wellbeing in the

Hagley/Ferrymead ward. Applications for the fund open on 15 February 2013 and close on 31 March 2013. The Board will consider applications in July.Small Grants Fund – a Committee of the Board allocates this fund in August to assist projects that enhance community groups’ capacity and increase participation in the community.
