Dangerous drivers could kill as they speed around hairpin bends on a narrow hill road.
That is the call from Rich-mond Hill Rd residents, who have been campaigning the city council for more than a year to make their road safer – to no avail.
The Bay Harbour News re-ported on the roading issues in May, after the third car crash
there in eight months.Frustrated residents reported
cars “screaming up the road all hours of the night” and said they didn’t feel safe allowing their children out of their homes.
Since then they have contin-ued sending emails to the city council, which has conducted safety checks but found no problems with the road.
“We do not agree that exces-sive speed is a roading problem – drivers must drive to the road conditions,” city council trans-
port unit manager John Mackie said.
Resident Brian Anderson, whose wife was “nearly killed” in a recent crash, said the way the city council has handled the issues is not good enough.
“I am appalled at the whole way in which the city council treats safety. It’s going to kill somebody.”
His wife, Cherry, was just about to pull out of the drive-way on May 12 when a male driver sped down the hill, lost
control and spun, crashing into a nearby parked car and a lamp post.
Now turned the wrong way, the driver sped back up the hill, turned around and came back down again.
“That’s when my wife screamed out to a pregnant lady who was walking on the other side of the road. If she had pulled out she could have been T-boned neatly and that prob-ably would have killed her,” Mr Anderson said. • Turn to page 2

• From page 1He also said that he is fre-
quently woken up at night by the noise of cars hooning up the hill.
The road’s speed limit is set at 50km/h however, Mr Mackie has said that 30km/h is the av-erage speed at which a car can safely travel up the road.
Neighbouring residents Erik Ellis and Alice Shannon asked Mr Mackie “if this is the case, why is there no signage to say this speed limit of 30km/h is recommended by you to be the speed limit for this section of the road?”
They said if it was an issue of cost over safety, they would be willing to contribute.
“As residents we are seriously concerned that it is only a mat-ter of time before there is a seri-ous injury. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss this further and find your attitude to our valid concerns dismissive.”
Mr Anderson said the only
solution he could see was to add in speed humps, chicanes (tight curves designed to slow traffic) and lower speed limits.
But Mr Mackie said no changes will be made.
“Richmond Hill Rd is adequately covered by signs
warning drivers of the bends along the road as well as signs warning drivers of potential pe-destrians presence on the road.”
Previous crashes on the road include the incident on May 12, when a driver, believed to have been drinking, crashed
into a parked BMW.The driver was caught by po-
lice later that day and charged for drink driving.
The next day a car was stolen from outside a family home on the street. Police found it later that day, abandoned at the Hals-well Quarry.
Dinesh Patel a resident spokesman for safety on the hill, said his daughter’s car was written off after it was hit by an uninsured driver.
The offending motorist hit the letterbox and fence and pushed the car into the driveway below.
Mr Patel said it was lucky nobody was killed.
“If my daughter’s car wasn’t there it would have gone right over the driveway like Starsky and Hutch and landed on the roof of the house below. The wife was heavily pregnant and has young kids. It most probably would have killed them.”

Residents angry over speeding driver stand
Sumner drivers will notice a night-time detour along Humphreys Drive, around the Avon-Heathcote Estuary which started on September 15.
It is expected to continue for six weeks, with the road closed from 7pm-6am, open during the day to two-way traffic with slower speeds around the work sites.
A team will be working every
night from the traffic lights at Ferry Rd/Humphreys Drive around the estuary to the Lin-wood Ave/Dyers Rd intersec-tion.
Work will take place seven days a week from 7pm-6am with traffic management around the work sites during daytime hours.
The detour route at night will be along Ferry and Dyers roads.
Humphreys Drive and the first part of Linwood Ave will be dug up, stabilised, graded and re-sealed.
Businesses will have access off Ferry Rd.
The second stage of this road rebuilding project will be along Ferry Rd from the bridge, also working at nights, to be com-pleted by mid-December.
Business access for bars and shops at the Ferrymead/Water-man Place end of Ferry Rd will be available with access to the supermarket from Humphreys Drive.
During the day, the road will be open two way with business access not affected apart from traffic management to protect the work sites.

Heather McDonald from coast-guard’s Sumner lifeboat has received top honours for 23 years of dedication and unwavering support to saving New Zealanders’ lives on the water.
The Sumner woman’s commit-ment was acknowledged when she received the Hutchwilco Coastguard Volunteer of the Year Award and Century Yuasa Coast-guard Rescue Vessel Volunteer of the Year Award at the National Coastguard Awards of Excellence gala evening, held in Auckland on Saturday.
Ms McDonald has been a valued member of coastguard’s Sumner lifeboat since 1991 and over the last year participated in 13 search and rescue and coastguard opera-tions, and has given up weekends to travel to other units to train volunteers.
Coastguard New Zealand chief executive Patrick Holmes, says the annual awards honour the brave individuals and units who provide a crucial life-saving service toKiwis using New Zealand water-ways.
“These awards celebrate excel-lence in achievement by coast-guard volunteers across the many roles they undertake in serving both their community and the or-ganisation as a whole. In addition the awards allow us to recognise their dedication and provide an
opportunity for acknowledgement at a regional and national level as well as amongst their peers.
“Heather has made an outstand-ing contribution to coastguard’s Sumner lifeboat and is not only
adept in her own roles but also helps aspiring senior masters prepare for their practical evalua-tion, training and coaching them as they work towards the certifica-tion. She is very professional in
her attitude to all her coastguard volunteering and actively encour-ages co-operation between units.”
Laura Harry, southern region vice chairwoman says: “Heather is a valued member of the southern region board. She has taken on the role of chairperson and makes a valuable contribution to the board deliberations and decisions. Her experience as a volunteer crew person, unit board member and trainer give her valuable insights into how the region can best build capacity in our units.”
Hutchwilco sales and marketing manager, Tim Ritchie says they are proud to be associated with the Coastguard Volunteer of the Year Award.
“We are told by Heather’s peers that she respects the different approaches units take to their op-erations while encouraging them to maintain a safety first culture, which is to be commended.
Coastguard keeps people safe on the sea, coastal waters and lakes of New Zealand. It is made up of more than 2300 highly-trained volunteers who put themselves in harm’s way on a regular basis to ensure the safety of New Zealand-ers nationwide. This year coast-guard’s volunteers brought over 7300 people safely back home and devoted more than 315,000 hours to saving lives on the water.
Pool namingThe Scarborough paddling pool has never officially had a name, and the city council is looking to change that. It is currently being rebuilt in time for Sum-mer, complete with a splash-pad feature with water toys and jets selected by children from the community. If you would like to help choose the name for the pool, go to www.surveymonkey.com/s/VV6GYC3
War memorial repairsThe Banks Peninsula War Memorial in Akaroa will be repaired soon after the city council granted the remaining $195,794 funding gap for $698,735 of repair work. The rest of funding was donated by various trusts. The memorial was damaged in the September 2010 earthquake. Work is scheduled to finish before the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing, on Anzac Day, April 25 next year.
Cholmondeley rebuildThe Cholmondeley Children’s Centre rebuild project started last week with temporary City Care office buildings installed on site ahead of the beginning of building work. The centre is still in the process of raising $4 million for its new, purpose-built facility. It is expected to open next year. To donate go to cholmondeley.org.nz/support-us/

The four-year-olds at Busy C’s Preschool in Lyttelton received two brand new iPads last week thanks to the Lyttelton Harbour Early Learning Community Cluster.
The iPads will be used by teachers for professional devel-opment and the children will use them as part of their Transition to School programme.
The cluster of early learning centres consists of Diamond Harbour, Governors Bay and Lyttelton primary schools as well as the Diamond Harbour Playcentre, Busy C’s Preschool and the Lyttelton Kidsfirst Kin-dergarten.
The playcentre and kindergar-ten have recently received their new iPads also.
Early learning cluster leader Tracey Janes says the iPads are part of a larger initiative.
“As educators we are always striving for efficient ways to improve practice across the sec-tor and we are strengthening our understanding of how collabora-tion will work to help improve student achievement.”
In the Lyttelton Harbour teachers have been collaborating to share best practice, identify and celebrate shared values – such as a desire to have all children engaged and happy in their learning – and to give our
tamariki a sense of belonging to ‘our place’.
Joint ventures such as the Har-bour Harvest Festival, sporting events and the year 7 and year 8 leaders camp booked for next year are all examples of the early learning centres and schools working together.
PLEASED PRE-SCHOOLERS: Busy C’s Preschool teachers Kirsten McKay and Bethan Yates with some of their four-year-olds after being presented two new iPads.
New iPads for keen little learners
KING FOR THE DAY: Teacher Kaiako Kim and Noah Halliday of Lyttelton Kidsfirst Kindergarten receive two new iPads for the kindy.
Funding for nine community projects has been granted after the Lyttelton-Mt Herbert Community Board chose where to allocate its strengthening communities money. The Lyttelton-Mt Herbert Community Board chose to fund five of its own projects:
• $1400 towards next year’s Anzac Day Centennial Services.
• $1000 towards the Connecting with the Community programme.
• $2000 towards this year’s Neigh-bourhood Week.
• $1500 towards the Community Services Awards.
It denied its own application for funding for the Edible Garden Awards.Other organisations which also
received funding are:• The Diamond Harbour Com-
munity Association, which received $10,000 towards the Diamond Har-bour Live at the Point and Sculpture on the Point.
• The Lyttelton Community House Trust, which received $11,250 towards capacity building for the community house.
• The Lyttelton Harbour Basin Youth Council Incorporated re-ceived $11,248 towards youth centre projects.
The community board recom-mended to the Diamond Harbour Community Association that local artists be contracted for Live at the Point project, as this would benefit the cultural and economical recov-ery of the area.
Funding for community projects has been approved by the Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board after a report and matrix presenting 52 applicants to its small grants fund. More than $75,000 in funding was awarded across 50 different projects. These include:
• The Mt Pleasant Memorial Com-munity Centre and Residents’ Asso-ciation Incorporated received $2000 towards next year’s Estuary Fest and $2572 towards the Mt Pleasant Tem-porary Community Centre portable toilet hire.
• The Sumner Bays Union Trust received $5000 towards project and administration costs.
• The Sumner Community Resi-dents’ Association received $2255 towards administration costs, $1000 towards the Sumner Village Street Party and $750 towards the Great Sumner Picnic.
• The Heathcote-Mt Pleasant Par-ish received $500 towards the Com-
munity Luncheon programme.• The Shoreline Youth Trust
received $1000 towards activities for Van Asch Deaf Education Centre youth and $1000 towards youth camp expenses.
• The Sumner Rugby Football Club received $3000 towards replenishing the first aid kits for junior teams.
• The Sumner Senior Citizens Club received $500 towards bus transport. The Heathcote Valley Community Association’s application for funding for a lawn mower was declined, as was the Sumner Redcliffs Histori-cal Society Incorporated request for contents insurance finances.
The latter was instead granted $450 from the community board’s discretionary response fund towards the insurance.
Another $700 from the discretion-ary response fund was granted to the Sumner Community Residents’ Association towards resources, tools and equipment.

The day started with plenty of heart and pride from both sides with opposing hakas. The day was wet but neither had anything but rugby on their minds. From the first whistle, both teams battled hard gaining territory each way to make a very even match. Titahi Bay started the scoring with a try and at half time Titahi Bay led the game by 12-0.The second half started for Lyttelton campaigning with a flurry of hope from two trys making the score 19-12 to Titahi Bay. With the mighty Lyttelton on the rampage chasing for the win against the very slick Titahi Bay team, hopes were high only the sidelines. Titahi Bay pushed hard to gain another try making the final score 26-12 to Titahi Bay.Great game from boths teams and we look forward to the 50th anniversary of the trip next year.

So Scott, how did you restart the local radio station?
Well there are actually two of us organising it – myself and a young man by the name of Rene Gavey. I just put a personal ad in the paper – you know, ‘Plasterer looking for an electrician, must be interested in starting a radio station, long walks on the beach and movies.’ That’s how I found him [laugh-ing]. We put it [the radio station] together last winter when it was quiet. We’ve been operating for just over a year now.
Why did you decide to go into radio?
Well we are actually the third incarnation of Lyttelton Radio. I’ve been in and out of Lyttelton for 20 years and there have been various people running it, but it dropped off after the earthquakes and we thought ‘bugger it, let’s start it again.’ I’ve been DJing since I was 16 though and I’m 39 now. It’s taken people a while to get over what they’ve lost post-earthquake and get into something new, but there are a lot of new places going up around here and it’s been great
to be a part of the new vibe.Don’t you also have a full-time
job?Yes I’m working as a celebrity
plasterer. It involves gib-stopping and plastering famous people’s houses. Like for famous people in Lyttelton – all two of them. We’ve also got a celebrity tiler, a celeb-rity painter . . . it’s just a term we came up with at the pub. As I do most of my work in Lyttelton I can pop in to the radio station when I have a spare moment, perhaps put together a weather report or something.
Do you have a studio to work out of?
Yes, well when we started Rene and I just bought a transmitter over from the West Coast and tried it out in my living room. The people on London St loved it so we decided to keep going. But we had
DJs coming into our living room all hours of the day and night, and it drove my wife up the wall. It would drive any self-respecting woman up the wall, I think. We lasted one month at home before we got kicked out. We’ve got a good studio now, at a secret place on London St. It’s a great space.
How many other people do you have helping at the station?
I’m technically the station man-ager but we’ve got so many people coming through. There are about 25 local DJs who might come in and work for an hour or two. We just have a roster on the wall and people fill in what days they’d like
to do, and if there are any empty spots someone will just come in and fill it. I’ve got two young girls, Niko and Ari, aged six and seven. They do their own radio show with the help of my wife. She gets a handful of kids from the Lyttelton Primary School and they select their own music, have their say and talk about how school’s going. They’re hard case. They mostly say ‘poos’ and ‘wees’ which, you know, is funny once.
Sounds fun. Do the other DJs get paid or do it for free?
We all do it for free – although if they’re really lucky they can get a spare lager from the fridge. But that’s really lucky. We like to call
ourselves a not-for-profit disor-ganisation, but it actually works quite well.
Apart from your DJing, have you done anything related to radio before?
I started off as an audio engi-neer, but you might do a gig and only get a crate of beer for it so when I had a young family that became difficult. I had to find another way to make money. Most of us at the station are actually working as tradies during the day so we have DJs after five and reruns and pre-recorded segments during the day.

The Lyttelton Radio station enjoyed a reincarnation last year when local funny man and “celebrity plasterer” Scott Sarmer took the reins. The airwave master speaks to Emma-Jane McLennan about septic tanks, free beer and the personal column that started it all.

• From page 7What kind of content do you
have on air?We have a bit of everything
– interviews, classical music, updates . . . every Friday we do an interview with an interesting local person. This guy I interviewed re-cently was a young guy who works with septic tanks. He showed me around and told me about what he does. He was really funny.
What is the next step for the station?
We’re hoping to be live streaming online within the next few weeks, so you could listen to the station in Sumner or Hoon Hay – just ex-panding it to the rest of the world. It’s 107.07FM if you want to listen. It’s only available in Lyttelton over the airwaves – most people don’t bother to tune in to an actual radio station these days. It’s all done on-line. So the first thing us tradies do when we go into a house and peo-ple say “help yourself to anything” is change the radio station.
What else do you do in your spare time?
We run a collective called the Lyttelton Vinyl Appreciation Society, 15 or so DJs and I, it’s not dance music or anything just really good music. I’m also really good at drinking lager. A lot of that is involved in the music industry. Honestly any spare second we get is mucking around at the station, and any spare time apart from that I’m just lying on the couch in my undies if I’m perfectly honest.
You seem to have a pretty good sense of humour – is that some-thing you’ve adopted for radio?
No I’ve always been a bit of a dick. I inherited my smartass at-titude from my dad. I make myself happy – but you’d have to ask other people if they think I’m really as funny as I think I am.

BY TANYA JENKINS - AVON-HEATHCOTE ESTUARY TRUSTLast week the 100,000th plant was planted at Charlesworth Wetland Reserve near Ferrymead.
The 3m totara tree was officially planted on by Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board chairwoman, Sara Templeton (above). In placing the tree Sara acknowledged the work of hundreds of volunteers who had planted native shrubs, grasses and trees in the reserve in recent years.
City council park ranger Andrew Crossland who supervises the volunteers said he was proud of their work because it had enabled the former grassy paddocks to be restored to a wetland far faster than initially expected.
Sunday, August 31 saw a planting event at McCormacks Bay. Park rangers brought 400 marshlands plants for a team of 20 keen local residents to plant with ease in the soft mudflats. It is planned to host regular planting events with the next event on Sunday, September 28 at 2pm. Meet at McCormacks Bay Rd at the bottom of Maffeys Rd. Tools and gloves provided but bring the gumboots.

If you walk around Mt Pleasant, McCormacks Bay or Redcliffs, you will notice that the hills are alive – with the sounds of construction.
It’s hard to avoid the sound of builders working to repair or re-build the local houses and con-tractors replacing damaged pipes under the road, or rebuilding re-taining walls. It is busy.
Here is a breakdown of the SCIRT and city council projects in the area:Ferrymead bridge
Work on the replacement Fer-rymead Bridge continues to plough ahead with commuters expected to be able to use the new bridge from April next year. Updates are avail-able on the city council website.Main Rd, Scott Park (near the Mt Pleasant Yacht Club) to McCor-macks Bay Rd, three-laning proj-ect
• The new kerb and channel should be completed by the end of September, then Fulton Hogan will begin replacing the road surface along the hill side of Main Rd.
• Traffic should be on the new road surface on the hill side of the road by Christmas. Fulton Hogan will begin resurfacing the sea side of Main Rd next year.
• Please take care around cyclists along this section of Main Rd. Be aware in some sections cyclists need to merge with traffic. Mt Pleasant Rd retaining wall
SCIRT’s Downer team is rebuild-ing this large section of retaining wall, just up the hill from the Sea-mount Tce intersection. As a result, the road is closed at this point for
about four months from now to the end of this year/early next year.
Work involves:• Removing vegetation along and
below the wall.• Installing a debris net below the
wall.• The failed retaining wall includ-
ing 1200 tonnes of existing mate-rial from behind the wall will be removed.
• Interlocking (keystone) con-crete blocks will be stacked along the cliff face and tied back using geogrid.
• New gravel will be compacted in layers between the geogrid ma-terial.
• Finally, the road surface will be reconstructed.
McCormacks Bay Rd gravity wastewater main replacement
The new pressure main pipe has been installed along McCormacks Bay Rd and Fulton Hogan has started to replace the existing gravity wastewater main. All up, the gravity works are expected to continue through until April next year. Following that, Fulton Hogan will fix the storm water pipes, kerb and channel, footpaths and road. The order of tasks in the bay
One crew will begin replacing the gravity wastewater main from the McCormacks Bay pump station (opposite Aratoro Place) towards Soleares Ave. This is the deepest part of the trench, closest to the
station. This is so Fulton Hogan can reopen McCormacks Bay Rd to two-way traffic as far as Soleares Ave as soon as possible. It will like-ly take until late this year/early next year. As crews work along McCor-macks Bay Rd, they will progres-sively open the road to two-way traffic as the gravity wastewater main is replaced.Redcliffs wastewater, stormwater and road repairs and Orion work
Fulton Hogan’s work is progress-ing well in Redcliffs.
• There are a few more sections of stormwater pipes that need to be repaired along Main Rd, mostly along the sea side of the road.
• Pipe lining, a trenchless method used to repair broken pipes where the inside of the damaged pipe is lined with a new material that
strengthens the pipe, is also under-way in Redcliffs.
• Orion crews are installing un-derground power cables to replace the overhead lines in the area, from the BP Station east to Wakatu Ave from early October.
• Then finally (and something to look forward to) there are road, kerb and channel works and the in-stallation of the traffic lights at the Augusta St-Main Rd intersection. This should start early next year. Thanks from the retailers
Thanks to all those people who are making an effort to support the local retailers, especially when they are surrounded by roadworks which makes stopping outside with a car less than straightforward. Thanks for going the extra mile for the rebuild.
REMNANTS: One of the trenches dug along Redcliffs’ Main Rd revealed six Maori ovens containing large amounts of charcoal, fire cracked rocks (used to retain heat and cook food), and several moa bones. This is of one of the moa bones discovered.

new supermarketOwners thrilled with
Lyttelton is rebuilding, and there’s a positive vibe around the town. Th e opening of its new supermarket has been part of this exciting process and
aft er almost three and a half years, residents can be confi dent their SuperValue is there for the long term.
Th e completely refurbished SuperValue supermarket opened on June 23 at the centrally located premises at 19 London Street, the same site where previous supermarkets had traded.
Husband and wife team Robin and Cheryl De Th ier are the franchise owners/operators and they are thrilled to provide Lyttelton residents with all the benefi ts of a brand-new,
well-stocked supermarket that meets their shopping needs.
Robin brings extensive experience in food retailing to his new business. A butcher by trade, he began his apprenticeship in 1974, and on completion of that, in 1978 he was appointed to his fi rst butchery manager’s role at the Lyttelton SuperValue.
He began working for SuperValue’s head offi ce around 1994, spending the next 14 years as a category manager for the SuperValue/FreshChoice group of stores.
For the fi rst few years his role was looking aft er all the fresh food departments – butchery, produce, bakery and service deli, and for the
latter period he was in charge of health and beauty, baby needs, beer and wine.
Robin and Cheryl bought the Woolston SuperValue in December 2007 and owned it until April 2013.
“I had heard about the need for a supermarket in Lyttelton, and then I was approached by the SuperValue head offi ce to see if I was interested in opening a supermarket there,” Rob says.
“Cheryl and I were very keen to do that as we wanted the opportunity to bring a nice supermarket to the town. Aft er we made the decision, it took about a year to put it together and get everything signed off . We are very proud of the new SuperValue, and we’ve had
very positive feedback from the community.”Rob says the new Lyttelton SuperValue
is styled on the new Edgeware SuperValue, which was rebuilt aft er the earthquakes.
“I worked there for six months to see how they went about doing things. What I love about our new Lyttelton SuperValue is that it’s a proper supermarket, a modern supermarket with everything brand-new.”
Proud owners: Robin and Cheryl De Thier outside their new SuperValue supermarket.

More products available for customers
The new Lyttelton SuperValue off ers an extended range of products across all departments, including fresh, local produce, competitively
priced meat items and a wide range of local and imported wines and beers.
“Th e store has 9877 SKUs (stock-keeping units), which is quite extensive for a store this size,” owner Robin De Th ier says.
Th e key to the supermarket’s ability to provide such an extensive range is the type of display units that have been installed. Th e shelving is the very latest design, allowing for an extensive amount of products to be displayed across a relatively small fl oor area.
Th e refrigeration and chiller cabinets are also state-of-the-art, so the product is not only attractively displayed for customer choice, it also retains quality and freshness.
Fresh produce is sourced from growers around Christchurch, as well as from other parts of the country, with organically grown produce becoming increasingly popular with shoppers.
“Our range of products has expanded since we opened, with many suggestions coming from our customers,” Rob says. “We wanted to fi nd out what things people looked for that we didn’t have so we asked them to submit their
suggestions, and we’ve been pleased to be able to meet most of their requests.”
Th e supermarket has over 4000 shoppers a week, with the customers coming not only from the Lyttelton township, but also from the bays around the harbour, Rob says.
“People from Diamond Harbour are fi nding us especially convenient. Th ey can take the ferry across to Lyttelton, do their grocery shopping, have a browse around the town and take the ferry back.”
Visitors to Lyttelton port are also becoming regular customers. As well as fresh fruits and vegetables, chocolate and fi sh oil tablets are among their favourite purchases.
“I’ve seen Russian seamen leaving the shop with armfuls of chocolates,” Rob says.
In the wine and beers department, the supermarket off ers a wide range of boutique beers, which are growing in popularity.
“With wine, customers are buying in the mid-price range,” he says, “and the top-priced wines also sell quite well. We have a great range.”

Focus on community in Lyttelton
Lyttelton SuperValue owners/operators Robin and Cheryl De Th ier are very proud of their new supermarket, and they and their team are enjoying
serving and being part of the local community. As part of the SuperValue Community
Cash initiative, SuperValue Lyttelton gives $200 a month to local community groups and individuals. To date, the Lyttelton/Sumner Community Patrol and Steam Tug Lyttelton Preservation Society have received funds.
Th e SuperValue team are also pleased to know that well-loved facilities lost in the earthquakes will be restored to the community.
Lyttelton Recreation Centre and the connected historic Trinity Hall is a vital community facility for Lyttelton and provides one of the largest community spaces in the
township. Th e facility is currently closed, with costs and a repair strategy currently being investigated, the Christchurch City Council says.
Th e council will make signifi cant improvements to the building, including soundproofi ng and modernising meeting rooms, upgrading the ventilation system, re-roofi ng the offi ce and squash courts and an improved fi t-out.
Th e Trinity Hall is expected to be available by January 2015, with the Lyttelton Recreation Centre following in mid-2015.
Before its closure, the Recreation Centre and Trinity Hall were used heavily by the community, with more than 22,000 bookings each year, and is the primary Civil Defence Emergency Centre for Lyttelton. It was used
by a range of sports groups and for public meetings, including for Lyttelton–Mt Herbert Community Board meetings.
Th e gymnasium doubles as a large assembly space for events and is used for basketball, badminton, volleyball, indoor football, indoor bowls, dances, yoga, pilates, group exercise, mothers’ groups and foundation movement skills for children.
Work to replace the Norman Kirk Memorial Pool began in June 2014 and it is hoped this much-loved and used facility will reopen in December, just in time for the 2014/2015 summer season.
Th e work involves replacing the swimming pool, the pool changing rooms, the offi ce plant and equipment. Repair work on the site’s earthquake-damaged retaining walls has also started. Th e pool will be rebuilt to 100 per cent of New Building Standard (NBS) combined with some improvements, including increasing the size of the toddlers’/children’s pool and installing sun shading.

The opening of the Lyttelton SuperValue has brought employment to Lyttelton, with many of the store’s 22 full-time and part-time employees coming from the Lyttelton
area. Robin and Cheryl De Thier’s son Joshua has also
joined the team and is in charge of the store’s fresh produce department, while their 12-year-old daughter Amy loves going to the store after school and is learning how to operate the checkout machine, with a future after-school job in mind.
Marketing manager for SuperValue Amanda Carmichael says, the company is very pleased the new supermarket has opened in Lyttelton.
“Customers will enjoy the new SuperValue décor and layout. Cheryl and Robin De Thier are experienced and enthusiastic supermarket operators and are dedicated to providing Lyttelton area residents with fabulous service and a good range of products,” she says.

A longstanding business, Florian was founded in 1958, and when Michelle purchased it in November last year, she changed
the name to re ect the new direction she wanted it to take.
“ e shop has a very boutique-brand focus. We make our own leather products under our own brand name, and they are all made in Christchurch to our own designs,” Michelle says.
A quali ed interior designer with a business degree, Michelle says she was looking for “something to sink my teeth into” when she returned to Christchurch a er eight years of living in Indonesia and Mongolia. Florian seemed the perfect t.
“I love beautiful things and I love design.
Having a boutique leather bag shop located in a shopping centre called e Tannery couldn’t be more appropriate, says Michelle Rhodes, owner of Florian Rhodes.
“We are very lucky to be here, to get a spot in e Tannery.”
I’m also passionate about promoting things made in New Zealand.”
Florian Rhodes has an extensive selection of stylish bags, which are mostly made from New Zealand leathers, although some are made from Italian leather.
“We source our New Zealand cowhide locally. Cowhide has a beautiful lustre, and there is a huge demand for New Zealand cowhide around the world.
“ e Italian leathers we are bringing in are a bit di erent. For example, we have hand-painted Italian leathers in leopard print.”
Michelle plans to introduce her own designs into the range within a few months, and she has updated some of the existing designs with new colours and styles.
Bags can also be custom-made from di erent-coloured stock leathers.
While the focus is on leather – including handbags, men’s toiletry bags, travel bags and diaries, Florian Rhodes is also extending its range into accessories. So cashmere scarves and throws from Mongolia, rabbit fur scarves and New Zealand-made cushions can all be found there.
“We are also introducing an exciting range of Austrian jewellery, with the rst shipment arriving in August,” Michelle says.
Getting into business has been “challenging and exciting”, and Michelle looks forward to seeing Florian Rhodes become one of the most sought-out shops in e Tannery. Check out their new website http:// orianrhodes.co.nz.

Opening her artisan studio at the Tannery was the culmination of years of experience for Bridget Ellery. A trained graphic
designer, she travelled extensively using her skills in various commercial settings.
Her love of all things natural and her passionate belief in creating beautiful, hand-cra ed pieces led Bridget to design objects that are made to inspire, bringing so ness and beauty into people’s lives.
Bridget’s shop at e Tannery is welcoming for customers, while providing a space for her to work on designs, ranging from homewares, stationery, jewellery and skincare products, to a highly-anticipated clothing range.
In uenced by European cra speople, designers and her own European heritage, Bridget produces only items of the highest quality that will continue to bring beauty into any home for many years.
is is a positive move away from the
hand-crafted pieces
usual throw-away attitude. She believes in the old-fashioned way of working where people make products that are sought out by others. Pointing out that our current lifestyle is unsustainable, she creates items that will last and be passed on.
Her creative focus is on femininity and beauty and a desire to celebrate women. She believes that the so , feminine touch nourishes and loves the people who come into contact with it and expresses this in all she creates.
Everything is designed, and most are made, in her studio from the nest materials
available – all are sustainable products, organic and locally made where possible. is ensures quality- nished products.
e homewares’ range, for example, is a gorgeous array of bespoke, handmade so furnishings and wall coverings featuring delicate imagery and Bridget’s beautiful original artworks.
A touch of the sacred comes into play in a jewellery range that includes detailed hand-cra ed rosary bracelets. Perfumes are made from the purest natural ingredients and the stationery has the most exquisite, unique
images that rejoice in all things feminine. As well as the items already available,
Bridget o ers a bespoke service. She loves the process of sharing ideas with a customer and creating something of beauty together. Her experience as a counsellor means women working with her always feel empowered to be part of the creative process.
She welcomes visitors to her studio at e Tannery, 3 Garlands Road, Woolston. You can contact her on 03 389 3765 or 021 485 829, or visit Bridget Ellery Design’s website www.bridgetellerydesign.co.nz.

With most people enjoying a break from winter sport and possibly contemplating getting into their summer sport, seven Sumner Running Club juniors have continued cross-country training.
The season started back in May with their school cross-country, zones and then Canter-bury primary school selection, the season is now almost at an end with only the inter-re-gionals still to be run.
The race is being held in Hanmer Springs tomorrow, where the Can-terbury primary schools team will compete for the Phil Costly Shield, which Wellington currently holds.
Jack Rule, Jack Forest, Beth Hunter, John Wells, Emilio Kennedy, and Abby and Blake Theo-bald have attended weekly team training sessions located from Halswell to
Hanmer Springs as well as doing their own in-dividual training – it has been a huge commit-ment from these athletes.
Each Saturday they have also competed in events with the final practice race being the two-person relay held at Heathcote Domain on September 13 in very windy conditions.
Other youth and senior runners from the club have been warming up for the club’s Boul-der Bay Classic by competing in the recent Governor’s Bay to Lyttelton Harbour 10km handicap road race. At 15 years of age and in her first 10km race, Meg Fahey took line hon-ours on handicap in the senior women’s race ahead of her sister Jess Fahey.
For the next two months the club’s focus will be working towards the classic on November 2.
This 10km off-road run, capturing the stunning coastline views of the Godley Head Track, was extremely popular last year. The recently refur-bished track begins at Taylors Mistake beach and winds its way around the peninsula via Boulder Bay, past the historic huts and gun em-placements, to the top of Godley Head. From there the runners move onto a grassed farm track before rejoining the Godley Head path-way to return the start/finish line. The undu-lating course offers a challenging yet achievable run to both the experienced and novice runner.

Sumner won the year 7 and 8 netball compe-tition outright, an improvement on last year’s semi-final exit.
The two schools met in the year 7 and 8 boys’ football final, repeating their match-ups from the bays cluster championships and the south-east zone championships. Redcliffs won on both prior occasions, but this time, they could only manage a draw, so both teams were crowned champions.
Redcliffs’ year 5 and 6 football team also won their tournament.
DRAWN TOGETHER: The Redcliffs School and Sumner School year 7 and 8 boys’ football teams come together after their draw in the Canterbury region final at Avonhead Park last month.

Village of Secrets: Defying the Nazis in Vichy Franceby Caroline Moorehead
When fourteen-year-old Sophie Monroe suddenly vanishes one night it looks at first as though she’s run away from home. Her computer and mobile phone have gone, and she’s taken a bag full of clothes. However, as the police investigation unfolds a wealth of secrets from the surrounding community start coming to light. And it seems everyone has something to hide. For Detective Sergeant Andrea Lawrence, the case is a painful reminder of the tragedy that tore her family apart over twenty years ago. She is convinced there is more to Sophie’s disappearance than teenage rebellion. But just what has happened to Sophie Monroe?
A SUNDAY TIMES TOP FIVE BESTSELLER LONGLISTED FOR THE SAMUEL JOHNSON PRIZE 2014High up in the mountains of the southern Massif Central in France lie tiny, remote villages united by a long and particular history. During the Nazi occupation, the inhabitants of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon and the other villages of the Plateau Vivarais Lignon saved several thousand people from the concentration camps. There were no informers, no denunciations, and no one broke ranks. Together, the villagers held their silence, and kept persecuted people – resisters, freemasons, communists and above all Jews, many of them children and babies – from danger. During raids, the children would hide in the woods, their packs on their backs, waiting to hear the farmers’ song which told them it was safe to return. After the War Le Chambon became one of only two places in the world to be honoured by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among Nations. Just why and how Le Chambon and its outlying villages came to save so many people has never been fully told. But several of the remarkable architects of the mission are still alive, as are a number of those they saved. Caroline Moorehead travelled across the world to interview these people, and searched archives that few have seen, to bring us the unforgettable testimonies of many of those involved in this extraordinary account. It is a story of courage and determination, of a small number of heroic individuals who risked their lives to save others, and of what can be done when people come together to oppose tyranny.
GIVE AWAY
Behind Closed Doors by Susan LewisThe powerful new novel about how life can change course in a heartbeat. From the Sunday Times Top Ten bestselling author of Never Say Goodbye.
From the author of the New York Times bestseller A Train in Winter comes the extraordinary story of a French village that helped save thousands who were pursued by the Gestapo during World War II.

Local pharmacy offers friendly serviceand advice
A friendly and efficient pharmacy is one of the most important facilities in any local community, as customers of the Redcliffs
Pharmacy know and appreciate.Redcliffs Pharmacy has three qualified
pharmacists, owners Daryl and Catherine Sayer, and Sandi Scott. As Catherine explains, their services go much further than simply preparing doctors’ prescriptions.
“There is now much more emphasis on helping people take their medications more efficiently, explaining what they are for, any potential side effects or interactions and the best time of day to take them,” Catherine says.
“Some people who are on a number of medications may qualify for a fully funded
service that allows the pharmacy to do more for them. They get to sit down with a pharmacist for 30 to 45 minutes (in a private room in the pharmacy) to look at how they take their medication. We see if there is a simpler or better way.
“We may suggest using blister packaging, a reminder service or just answer any questions the patients have about their medication. This is the way pharmacy is going, and it’s good because if people are taking their medications correctly, they are more likely to remain healthy and not require expensive hospital services.”
Redcliffs Pharmacy also encourages anyone with minor ailments, such as coughs and colds, eye or skin infections, or seasonal allergies to ask them for advice on treatment.
“The pharmacist will know if they need to visit the doctor, or if their ailment can be easily cleared up with medication we supply,” Catherine says.
Beauty, personal care and health products are the other important aspect of Redcliffs Pharmacy’s service. They stock herbal remedies and vitamins, hair and skincare products, and offer two leading brands, Revlon and Trilogy. They have recently launched a club for these brands, giving members discounts and birthday specials.
With Christmas not far away, the pharmacy is gearing up with a wide selection of New Zealand-made products which are always very popular with customers, shop staff Trish and Kirsty say.
Redcliffs Pharmacy is also a dry cleaning
agency, provides a passport photo service and has two photo kiosks where customers can download and print out their digital photos.
Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm – convenient for customers wanting to call in before or after work.
“Some people who are on a number of medications may qualify for a fully
funded service that allows the pharmacy to do more for them.”

Hello again, and what about the weather? I cannot get bored as it seems like no
two days are the same. Driving along the avenues is lovely
with all the daffodils out. Gives me some-thing to look at when stuck in traffic on Linwood Ave.
The Lyttelton Road Tun-nel 50th birthday celebration was very popular with over 20,000 people walking, skat-ing, cycling, on crutches, rollerblading, in prams, you name it, they made it through.
I admire the people who did it 50 years ago and were happy to do it again. Lyttelton Lions held the buckets to collect donations for Cholmondeley Children’s Centre, we thank the generous people who handed
over notes and coins.Last Sunday we held a trivia night at
the Valley Inn Tavern in Heathcote. It was a fun night and a big thank you to the tavern for their donation of a $100 dinner, as well as donations from Storm Hairdressing, Lyttelton SuperValue and
Leslies Book Shop in Lyttelton. This month we delivered a
load of firewood to a needy family and arranged for the garden to be cleaned up for a lady who is unwell and in con-stant pain. This is truly Lions in action.
On Saturday, September 27, we are running the Community Garage Sale on Canterbury St from 10am. Do drop in and say
hello to us and grab a terrific bargain – the place will be full of them. The Lyttel-ton Farmers Market will be held as well so a great morning is guaranteed.
Three walks planned for the Bay Harbour News area will help put the spring back in your step, explore some of the best local tracks and meet others from your community.

Having the Year 7 and 8 students as part of Linwood College gives the students the best of both worlds. While they have access to all the facilities of the senior school, and are taught for some of their subjects by the highly skilled secondary school teachers they also have their own dedicated space. This space recreates the supportive small school environment where the teachers know all the students and students are able to develop the relationships necessary for success during their middle school years.
At Linwood College, Year 7 and 8 students are in the fortunate position of having a wide range of digital devices. This means that at any time, all students have access to a device. Having a range of devices enables students to choose the particular device that suits their learning at that particular time. All students have Google Apps for Education accounts and this enables them to have a seamless learning environment, from digital to non-digital and from school to home. With each class having its own website to support student
learning, students are quickly encouraged to develop the self-management and organisational skills they need to achieve in the future. This enables teachers to work alongside the students, meeting individual needs and supporting and extending as appropriate.
Through their relationship with Future in Tech Linwood College Year 7 and 8 students have a range of experiences available to them. Currently a group of students are working with an engineer on developing their outdoor space. They have surveyed their community to
find out about their needs and wants and they are designing the space considering physical constraints, health and safety regulations and financial constraints.
Previously students have worked with engineers during an Electronics Day where they made electronic Christmas trees with programmable chips, flashing lights and music. The materials for this event are donated by Tait electronics.
Linwood College’s Year 7 and 8 Leadership Programme gives all its students the opportunity to develop their leadership capabilities. Each student is in a leadership group of their choice and as part of this they are expected to take action and have a positive impact on their school community. Students are fully supported by the staff with their vision and they are given frequent opportunities to develop skills such as public speaking and effective organisational management which are necessary skills to be effective leaders in the future.
The Best of Both Worlds
Digital Devices for All
Developing Leaders
Making in a Makerspace
Years 7 and 8
Makerspaces are an extension of the Maker culture - a subculture that has sprung up, arguably as a way to balance our increasing digital world. The Maker culture itself combines traditional D.I.Y., an essential part of New Zealand culture, with the added possibilities made available through technological advances such as 3D printing, Robotics, CNC tools and electronic developments such as eTextiles.
In an increasingly digital world it is an understandable concern that our young people may not be developing the traditional hands-on skills. There is no doubt that hands-on learning, or learning by doing, is essential for children to develop their understandings about how the world around them works as well as for
developing their creativity and problem-solving skills.
Within Year 7 and 8 at Linwood College there is a dedicated Makerspace area where students have a range of tools, equipment and materials available to them. This area is being purposefully designed to encourage an increased engagement in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) subjects along with helping students to develop their creativity through art and design. There is a focus on students learning the skills necessary to enhance their natural innovation and creativity. This is a space in which students can work either independently or collaboratively on projects that are driven by their own interests.

New families welcome at
The spacious, purpose-built preschool offers an extensive range of learning programmes for children in three age groups:
nursery - aged three months to 18 months; toddlers - aged 18 months to three years; and preschool - aged three to five years.
Parents and children are encouraged to visit the centre to see if it is what they are looking for in preschool education, Kathryn says.
“Once the child is enrolled, parents can spend as much time as they need at the preschool to ensure their child is settling happily into their new environment.”
Among the wide range of activities and equipment enjoyed by the children, one of the most popular is the Teaching Room, designed for children over three.
Heathcote Valley Preschool on Port Hills Road is delighted to advise they have spaces available,
director Kathryn Palliser says.“This environment enables us to recognise
the unique and diverse learning approaches of each child,” Kathryn says. “We provide a creative curriculum, including literacy, numeracy, visual arts, music and movement, science, computer and technology, geography, cultural skills, physical education and health and safety in the Teaching Room, and throughout the centre.
“The Teaching Room is a special place for this age group. They know their work in here will be valued. The children are uninterrupted and their ‘work in progress’ is left out, reflecting ongoing engagement. Celebration occurs, and partnerships between the child, their teachers and parents are enhanced – and the children love it!”
The centre has an electronic diary system to keep parents informed on what their
children are doing each day. Learning stories and photographs of the children’s activities are uploaded, which parents can then download, print out and share.
“We’re committed to keeping up with the latest technology. The children have access to and are taught utilising computers, iPads and cameras,” Kathryn says.
She and her husband Andy opened the preschool five years ago, and they and their staff are totally committed to early
childhood education.“We want to play a very special part
in your child’s life; we want to know and understand them, connect and build relationships with them, celebrate ideas, challenge their thinking and most of all, aid them in developing a strong sense of identity.
“Give us a call and arrange to visit. We look forward to meeting many new families at Heathcote Valley Preschool.”
Baking: Matilda, Arna, Lilah, Freya and Isla learn about baking chocolate cake with preschool teacher Kel.
Books: Harry and Charlotte in the reading corner.Learning: Emily at the concept board.

Hollywood 3 Theatre will launch the world debut of the New Zealand feature film Lexi.
The independent drama is set to screen for the first time tomorrow.
Written and directed by filmmaker Wayne Turner, the project would be his first feature film.
Lexi stars Request Ahoma-na as the main character; a young woman who struggles with dyslexia and strives for acceptance.
Her role in Lexi also marks her feature film debut.
The drama was filmed in
Oamaru during winter.“I wanted that realistic,
gritty, wintery feel of Southern New Zealand to match the story,” said Mr Turner.
He said he chose to debut the film at the Hollywood because he knew the audi-ence there enjoyed quality drama.
“I wanted it to be unpre-tentious, no special effects and blood-soaked charac-ters, so I wanted to stick within the drama genre.”
The low-budget film was filmed over several months and used crowd-sourcing for funding.
Mr Turner said he was
looking forward to the big debut, but the process had not been without challenges.
“Making a film is about a million times harder than anyone can imagine. There’s a combination of relying on actors and crew to turn up on certain days combined with access to location. And then you’re at the mercy of the weather too,” he said.
Inspired by true events, the film was based on real characters from Mr Turner’s life.
He hoped the story would raise awareness of some of the social issues facing many Pacific people living in New Zealand.

Q A&HOW DO I MAKE EGGS BENEDICT?The original dish was anAmerican one, apparentlynamed after a customer atNewYork’sWaldorf-Astoria Hotel in the late19th century. It consists ofgrilled ham (preferably offthe bone) and poached eggson split, toasted andbuttered Englishmuffins,
smotheredwith hollandaisesauce then seasonedwithfreshly-ground blackpepper and servedimmediately. Substitutecooked and pureed spinachfor the ham and the dishbecomes eggs florentine.Grilled bacon, smokedsalmon or sauteedmushrooms also workwellinstead of ham.
WHICH LAVENDER IS BEST FORCULINARY PURPOSES?English lavender(Lavandula angustifolia, L.hidecote, L. munstead) isprobably best, having asweet fragrance without thecamphor overtones of L.stoechas and L. dentata.Themain thing is tomakesure that the plant hasn’tbeen sprayedwithpesticides. And remember
that just a little lavendergoes a longway. Flowersand leaves are edible. Usefor colour in salads, as aherb in savoury dishes andto infuse liquids, or seal in acontainer with sugar toimpart flavour.
Small sprouts pack big nutrient punchT
HOSE little featherysprouts usually sold inpackets at yoursupermarket are highly
nutritious. Germinated frommany varieties of seeds, peas, grains and beans, they arerecognised for their B vitamins, especially thiamine, plus theyprovide a range of mineralsincluding copper, and zinc. Those with highwater contenthave a lower concentration ofnutrients. All are low in calories.Bean sprouts have been
enjoyed in New Zealand sincethe gold rush days when
Chinese immigrants introducedKiwis to a very different cuisine.Sprouts were added to Chineseomelettes— egg foo yung— aswell as stir-fries. They regainedpopularity in the late 60s whenthe hippiemovement in the USencouraged the opening ofhealth food stores and a diet of
grains and seeds. Most of thedishes were cardboard-like andrather boring.Bean and seed sprouts are
anything but boring. Purplesango, or radish sprouts, are afavourite of mine. They have adistinctive hot peppery flavourand add interest to sandwichesandwraps. Because of their eye-appeal, I like to use them as achef would usemicrogreens.Sangos are also soldmixedwithother sprouts such as alfalfa andadzuki that are great inhamburgermixtures, salads, eggdishes and in peanut butter and
apricot jam sarnies.I’m very disappointed in the
quality of most of themung beansprouts available. They are toolarge and often bitter, and theirstringy tails brown. Preferablythe tails need to be pinched offbefore using. I prefer to sproutmy ownmung beans, availablefrom natural and bulk foodsstores where you can alsopurchase dishes to DIY. Theycan also be sprouted in a jar.1.Wash half a cup of dried
mung beans under cold water.Place in a large (four-cup)preserving jar. Cover with cold
water and leave them to soakovernight at room temperature.2. Next day, drain beans and
wash under cold water, untilwater is clear. Return to the jarand cover withmore water.Place a single layer ofcheesecloth over the top andsecure with a rubber band. Rinsethe beans and change the watertwice a day.3. After about three days the
beans should have sprouted.Rinse, drain and refrigerate. Ifnot using immediately, store incold water in the fridge. Changethe water daily.

WHY DO SO MANY DISHES CALLFOR AN ONION COOKED INBUTTER BEFORE THE MAINCOOKING?
For flavour. Some recipessuggest cooking untiltender but not brown, others go on until the
onions are golden orcaramelised. Either way it’sworth it if you enjoy tastyfood. You can cut theamount of fat used bycovering the pot while youronion cooks— the lidcollects moisture thatwould normally evaporate, and by returning this to theonion, it avoids burning.

GARDENING
Relax and enjoy your outdoor workMore and more people are viewing the outdoors as an extension of the indoors, and the same basic rules of decorating and colour tend to apply – we’re making our outdoor retreat as private, beautiful and functional as our indoor living space.
Just like indoors, you can define outdoor relaxing space with your flooring. The sitting and relaxing area can be separated from the garden by paving, or a line of garden.
If you’re using a lot of paving or lawn and you want to continue the
flow while still defining the space, a step up or down will create the illusion for you.
Blend indoor and outdoor areas with the same flooring materials if possible, or similar tones.
If you step from carpeted lounge to paved outdoor space, particularly through glass doors, you can accentuate the flow of the eye by extending exterior paving just inside the door of your home and joining to carpet.
Colour is important too, and the same colour rules that apply in a house can apply in a garden.
Blues and greens in furniture, flowers and foliage give a cool feeling to hot spots. Reds, oranges and yellows in a shady spot have a warming effect.
Often, the style of your house will suggest the style of your outdoor living – Mediterranean classic homes look great with gardens of the same formal nature,
perhaps with a relaxing water feature, citrus trees and statuary. And you need to put thoughtinto your outdoor furniture selection for style, durability and placement.
Getting the right arrangement outside is the same discipline as finding the right one inside. Draw the space to scale, and figure out where furniture and planters will sit for best fit and best “traffic flow.’’
Long summer evenings are not just for gardening. They’re for sitting and enjoying
QUIET TIME: Recreational areas can be defined by tiles. Statues add formality to the outdoors.

Worried about a MOLE?
[EDITION DATE]2
There has been a hairdressing salon on Main Road in the Redcli s Village for many years, but 14 months ago it had a change of
ownership and was given a stylish new name – Black Suede House of Hair.
New owner Marysa Ryan, who had worked there for the previous owner, gave the exterior a smart new paint job to match the name and refreshed the interior décor to create a welcoming environment for clients.
With 30 years’ experience in the hairdressing industry in New Zealand and Australia, Marysa was very excited to set up her own business in Redcli s as she loves the area. She o ers a full range of hairdressing services, including perms, with her particular specialty being cutting and colouring. While foils are still available, the new techniques of ombre and balayage give more subtle highlights on the ends of the hair strands, which is more natural, Marysa says.
In terms of style, short-cropped pixie styles
are becoming popular, as well as longer hair with big waves. e lob, or long bob, is also a trend, Marysa says. “But really, there is no one particular trend that people are following. ey are all individuals and we style their hair to suit them.”
Marysa is assisted by apprentice hairdresser Laura Brook, who has completed her rst year ahead of the other students.
e products they use are from the French Dancoly range, including the Angel brand, which are all marine-based products.
“I chose those because they are more natural and they t with our seaside location. e clients love these products, and they are available at three price points so clients can choose how much they want to spend.”
e GHD wand, which is used to create those luscious, loose waves, is also sold.
Black Suede House of Hair also o ers beauty services such as waxing and eyelash tinting.
Signi cant development is underway at the
Redcli s Village, especially the rebuilding of the supermarket across the road from the salon.
“Once that opens, it will bring more people into the community again, and we hope to see new clients in the salon,” Marysa says.
Black Suede House of Hair is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9am. Phone 384 1664.
