Help needed to get acts together

BY GRACE CABELL

Parents of Redcliffs School pupils are demanding Port Hills National list MP Nuk Korako put pressure on Education Minister Hekia Parata to keep the school open.

Ms Parata announced on March 23 that the school may face closure by July next year.

Mr Korako says he is working

with the Minister of Education behind the scenes.

“That is my role as a govern-ment MP. I can do that, because I’m sitting inside Government,” he said.

However, residents say more practical action is needed by Mr Korako.

Parent Nicola Holdaway said Mr Korako needs to have more discussion with Ms Parata.

“For a National MP I haven’t seen his face. His minis-ter has made this decision – he needs to hear what we have to say as well. He’s obviously not being very vocal about it,” she said.

Redcliffs resident Tuula Rape-ly agreed.

“My kids left at the end of last year but I still have a strong in-terest in what goes on at Red-cliffs School. I can honestly say

I think Ruth Dyson is a legend – I’m pretty sure everyone you talk to in Redcliffs will confirm this view right now.

“I am also equally sure that the general feeling around Nuk Korako is that he has been seen to be lacking and very weak in his support of his constituency on this matter and it hasn’t gone unnoticed,” she said.

The Bay Harbour News asked its readers what they thought about the possible closure of Redcliffs School, and also about the proposed skatepark for Sumner. Here are some of their responses:

• Ron KirklandIn my opinion this is an

absolutely ridiculous decision and smacks of political-financial considerations rather

than practical. The school has ample space

available to make sure it is safe during the remote chance of another earthquake in the near future and historically it could be 1000 years before there is another one.

In the meantime an excellent, thriving school which is a vital,  integral part of the local community has to weather the tensions of this whole review process and at the end of the day may have to close; disrupting hundreds of lives and causing a hammer blow to the

whole community. It just doesn’t make any sense.

• Mr Smith:As a resident of Sumner I am

against a skatepark being built on the Esplanade.

The Esplanade is an area of natural beauty, with a special character, I believe it is zoned accordingly and would require a zoning change for a skatepark proposal to progress. Also, a public hearing is required to decide a change to use of public land. I think it is important enough to have a public hearing.

A skatepark is at odds with the existing character of the Esplanade, cluttering the foreshore area and resulting in a negative visual impact. There will also be sound issues with noise affecting neighbours and the wider community.

Sumner residents have a large variety of opportunities to participate in outdoor activi-ties, both on council land and within the natural environment. I believe other areas of the city might be more appropriate and needy of the proposed sponsor-ship.

•From page 1Redcliffs parent Emma Alldridge

said she was keen to hear Mr Korako’s views.

“I’ve been following his Facebook page to see what his point of view is, and he has said he’s supporting the community. But I haven’t actually heard practically what he means.

“Ruth [Dyson] has been very ac-tively involved in the Redcliffs com-munity.

“I suppose her support has been more practical because she’s talked about the practical things she can do, like helping with a survey and sub-missions,” she said.

Mr Korako said he had been mak-ing himself available.

“I’ve been in contact with the prin-cipal, I’ve had meetings with the school board, meetings with parents who have come to my office, public meetings and I’ve been out on the streets,” he said.

Port Hills MP Ruth Dyson said she has been working with school support groups to build submissions.

“Making submissions can be in-timidating – I’ve been meeting with smaller groups to show them how they can put them through. I think the minister will listen,” she said.

“Next week the group will deliver flyers telling people what’s happening. I’m just supporting them in whatever way I can. My Labour volunteers are helping to deliver pamphlets too.

Principal Kim Alexander spoke to city councillors during a Mayor in the Chair forum last week, on April 1.

She said the closure proposal was unexpected.

At the forum she asked city coun-cillors to make a submission to Ms Parata.

The school’s board of trustees had also created submission instructions for the school community to send to Ms Parata. •Nuk Korako, p6, p7

Residents are furious the Purau foreshore is being used to dump waste material.

For more than a year Purau has been used as a dump site for green waste and road works ma-terial.

Purau Residents’ Association chairman Thomas Kulpe spoke to the Lyttelton-Mount Herbert Community Board regarding about the issue.

He said he believed it was city council material which had been left there.

“When we had the big storms

in March and April last year we had quite a deluge here, and a lot of green waste – about 40 to 50 truckloads of it was sitting there for half a year because the city council did not have the money to move it,” he said.

“We’re worried it might happen again. If a regular person was to do it it wouldn’t be good enough.

He said he questioned whether the city council had consents to leave waste in the public area.

“We want these consents to be publicly notified and public consult-ed about. The amenity value of the foreshore is hurt,” said Mr Kulpe.

Lyttelton-Mount Herbert chairwoman Paula Smith said the board had asked the city coun-cil for feedback but said nothing could be done straight away.

“The board members all agree it is definitely a problem there,” she said.

Mr Kulpe said the associa-tion believed it was violating the Banks Peninsula District Plan.

But a city council spokeswom-an said the location was within the  Coastal Marine Area which belonged to Environment Can-terbury administers.

An ECan spokeswoman said there had previously been no complaints regarding the issue.

“There are permitted activity rules in the Coastal Plan relating to depositing material as result of structural work,” she said.

She said it had now been lodged as a complaint and would be investigated.

A section of Main Rd in Moncks Bay has been reduced to one-lane following emergency road works.

A wastewater main is collapsing and pulling the surface of the road down with it.

Traffic from Sumner into the city will be diverted along Bay View Rd and Wakatu Ave, while traffic

coming from the city into Sumner will be reduced to one-lane along a section of Main Rd.

Diversions were set up from 6pm on March 30.

The traffic changes are expected to remain in place for three to four weeks.

Urgent work is required for a section of the road which has started slumping.

The wastewater main

services Sumner, Clifton Hill, Scarborough Hill and Taylors Mistake.

While it is currently still operational, emergency work is required to fix the pipe.

Emergency works have been implemented due to the close proximity of the slump to water and power mains and the potential for the road to collapse further.

Lyttelton resident Mimi Hooper has been honoured for her work in helping people who are blind or have low vision.

Mrs Hooper has won the client care award at the at the Blind Foundation’s an-nual STAR Awards in Auck-land.

She has been working as a guide dog mobility In-structor for 25 years, and is in charge of training dogs older than 12 months, and matching dogs with clients in the Canterbury region.

She said she was sur-prised but thrilled to re-ceive her award.

“It’s very special to be honoured by clients and my colleagues,” she said.

She said she loves seeing guide dogs graduate, and successfully matched with a person who is blind or has low vision.

“There’s just no feeling like it.”

Blind Foundation spokes-person Alison Wheatley said guide dog puppies go through two years of rig-orous training before they graduate.

“Once assigned, their working life averages be-tween eight and 10 years. Some of this year’s gradu-ates will go to people who

haven’t had a guide dog before while others will re-place retiring guide dogs.

“We don’t charge people to receive a guide dog – all the costs for breeding and training are met by public donations. That’s why the Red Puppy Appeal is so im-portant,” said Mrs Wheatley.

“The continued gener-ous support of the New

Zealand public enables our puppies to succeed in their vital work. Just a few hours of your time could help make a world of difference to someone is who is blind or have low vision,” she said.

To sign up as volunteer for the Red Puppy Appeal visit redpuppy.org.nz or phone 0800 120 254.

BY GRACE CABELLAn 111-year-old house in Sumner formerly owned by Lyttelton MP James McCombs has been demol-ished.

Iwi and an archaeologist visited the house at 82 Esplanade St, before it was demolished on Monday.

The brick villa was built in 1906 for Mr McCombs, who represent-ed the Lyttelton electorate for 20 years from 1913.

The property is now owned by Sumner couple Ron and Nikki Twine, who have been living there for the past 21 years.

The pair had planned to turn the villa into a bed-and-breakfast.

“We were looking at old homes around Christchurch to turn into a bed-and-breakfast, and that’s why we moved in. We were working to-wards it. It was in two flats to begin with.

“We had spent 20 years renovat-ing it and bringing it back to where it was for the B’n’B. We had our daughter Kimberly on the way, so that slowed us down a bit.

“We had planned to bring it to-gether before our retirement but then the [September 2010] earth-quake hit it,” she said.

Mrs Twine said the pair bought the house when her parents saw it on the front cover of The Star’s Property Weekly, more than 21 years ago.

“We saw it on the front when it was for sale,” she said.

Mrs Twine said together with her husband the couple planned to rebuild and replicate the house on the site.

In the meantime, the couple were living next door, so they would be able to keep an eye on the property.

The historic house was framed with kauri and rimu, complete

with stained-glass windows which had stayed in place after the earth-quakes.

“It’s a big home, it’s 288 sq m. We’ve basically not been able to salvage any of the kauri, and I find that really sad. We’re not allowed to. But we are going to replace the new home with kauri.

“The only thing we’ve managed to keep is our front deck, which was all jarred. So we’ve rebuilt that into a kitchen bench. We managed to keep one stained-glass window too,” she said.

She said it was a sad day to see the house being demolished.

BY GRACE CABELLSumner residents say they are look-ing forward to 25 new tsunami sirens to be installed along the Christchurch coastline.

The additional tsunami sirens are being installed along Ferrymead, Mt Pleasant, Redcliffs, Moncks Bay, Sumner, Taylors Mistake, Spencer-ville and North New Brighton, add-ing to the 22 that have been in place since 2012.

Sumner Community Residents Association co-ordinator Marnie Kent says the new sirens will be a great benefit for the area.

“It’s a good thing, because we’re living at the back of Sumner Valley, on a windy day that’s a southerly we couldn’t hear a siren.

“It makes a lot of sense to put them a bit further inland so the noise can travel further. The ones on the hill have a better chance of getting away, but the ones on the flat can’t see anything,” she said.

The first of the 25 sirens will be installed by the second week of April.

All instalments will be completed by Thursday, June 25 this year.

City council manager of Civil De-fence and emergency management Murray Sinclair said locations for the sirens have been selected based on recent tsunami modelling.

More information can be found on the city council’s website at http://www.ccc.govt.nz/tsunami-warnings.

Can you tell me a bit about your background, where did you grow up?

I grew up in Tuahiwi, North Canterbury. I was born in Kaiapoi but my mother came from Rapaki. That was where I always had holidays, we moved back and forwards quite a lot.

How about your family, can you tell me about your children?

I have four children, and I have my wife Chris. My children are Max, Michael, Nicholas and James. Max is 22 and he’s doing an engineering cadetship for Aurecon. Michael is doing having a gap year, he’s 21 this year. Nicholas is 18 and he’s waiting to go into the Royal New Zealand Navy. And James is in his final year at Christ’s College.

Where did you go to school?I first went to Tuahiwi School, it

had 60 or 70 kids. And then I went to Kaiapoi North School, and then St Stephen’s School in Auckland. I got a Maori education scholarship to go there. It was absolutely enjoyable. I was in the same year as Hone Harawira, Te Ururoa Flavell (Maori Party leader), and the Maori King, Tuheitia Paki. I

came down and went to Rangiora High School as well.

What did you do after school?I originally went away to do my

overseas exchange for year, but I stayed for 20 years. I started in London. So I did a coach tour, (Contiki), then I worked for them for about five years. I did a year in Russia and Scandinavia then after that they got me to come off the road and I worked in the management side. I managed stop-overs in France, Florence and Italy, then they sent me back to New Zealand and I set up Contiki New Zealand here with two other people.

I did my overseas experience, travelling in every country in Europe, except eastern Albania. I met my wife on the Grand Canal in Venice. We got married at Rapaki, then we went back to live in London. I set up my own company, International Inbound Travel Services. And so from there that’s where I worked. My first two boys were born in the United Kingdom, so we have two with British passports and two with New Zealand passports. We came back when the two boys were quite

young because we wanted to bring them up in New Zealand, and we already had a house in Rapakai.

How did you get into politics?I never had a long-term

ambition to be a politician. I was a businessman. I’ve owned and operated my own businesses for most of my life. When I came back to New Zealand I was asked to join the iwi Ngai Tahu, where I became the chief executive on the main governance board. Then I was asked to join the board for

Ngai Tahu Holdings Corporation Ltd. That was my beginning into politics and my first involvement with iwi politics.

Then after the earthquakes I got a bit frustrated with how the city council was operating, so I put my hand up and contested the Banks Peninsula seat. I lost by five votes, but that was fine because I still had my businesses, so I continued with them.

Then I got approached by the National party to be a candidate in

the upcoming Port Hills electorate. I went through a really robust process with two others, and I was appointed as the National Party candidate.

Where in the Bay Harbour area are you living at the moment?

I’m living in Rapaki but I am moving. One of the things with the new ward boundaries is that, unfortunately, Rapaki missed out by 80m, and has been incorporated into Selwyn. So now I have another property where we’re moving into in Somerfield. But I still have my links to my tribal iwi at Rapaki, so I’m still very much involved.

How long have you been involved with Rapaki?

I moved there with my father in 1980.

What do you like most about living here?

I went from London to Rapaki. Rapaki epitomises a beautiful Maori ancestral community. The community is very close, and that is where our kids grew up. You have the land and the sea coming together. Christchurch is home. My family’s lived in the Port Hills for more than six generations.

How do you think the city is doing four years on from the earthquakes?

I think it’s going ahead in leaps and bounds now. The Government today has spent over $15.4 billion.

links to the Port HillsEverything was originally done

underground, and now that’s being completed we’re starting to see the real tangible stuff. In the Port Hills electorate there is still around 20 per cent of people who are still finding resolutions between the Earthquake Commission and insurance companies, but for 80 per cent of people everything has been sorted.

And we’re seeing this right across Christchurch as well. We’re looking at all of these things that are happening – we’re basically going to get a new city. We’ve got a very large electorate. We’ve seen the Ferrymead Bridge completed, which has taken some time, but anywhere near the water is where the damage has happened.

What is your view on Educa-tion Minister Hekia Parata’s decision regarding the possible closure of Redcliffs School?

I think the important view to note is that this is not a decision to close the school, it’s a proposal to close the school. I’ve always been very clear on this.

The reasons to keep it open outweigh those to keep it closed, but we do have to do that through process. A number of safety fac-tors have been addressed but it’s more about the uncertainty with the safety.

At the end of the day it is about the safety of the kids.

What are you doing to try and get your views heard about this?

As I said before, I’ve really made myself available. I’ve been in contact with the principal, I’ve had meetings with the school board, meetings with parents who have come to my office, public meetings and I’ve been out on the streets. No one wants to see a school close.

I really do understand the angst this is causing to school staff and pupils. I’m working behind the scenes with the Minister of Education and that is my role as a Government MP.

Do you think this will have a big effect on the next election?

Of course. There are always is-sues that people are actually going to look at when elections come up. But I think the important thing is it’s about making a very well-informed decision. It’s going to be up to the people to make that decision. As long as it’s transparent and we’re working together, people will make their mind’s up on that situation.

What are your other goals for the Port Hills area for this year?

I want to see our constitu-ents getting some closure and resolutions around their EQC and insurance-related problems. Let’s get our people back into their own

homes and get them relocated if they can’t rebuild. That’s the first priority. Let’s get our families settled again then the important thing which will follow that is around the infrastructure.

One important thing I’m do-ing is leading an initiative called the zero rules reduction. There is a public meeting I’m organis-ing to have a look at lot of these rules and compliance that really frustrate people. This meeting is on April 21, and people can come along and vent their frustration over compliance nightmares.

Do you have a favourite cafe or restaurant in the area?

I move around the electorate a lot – the one that I really do like is Coffee Culture in Lyttelton. I like the family who run it and the people in there. And Dot Com Cafe in Sumner, and also Zeroes Coffee Ltd at the bottom of the hill, it’s not far from my new place.

When you have free time, what hobbies do you have?

I still get involved in doing a lot of community stuff so I work hard on that. I’ve just come off the Cholmondeley children’s home board, and I’m still involved with the Rod Donald Banks Peninsula Trust. I like walking, I still do a bit of kayaking and ride my cycle a lot.

If you could be doing any other job, what would you be doing?

It would be in some kind of mentoring, like business mentor-ing. I want to continue on with my cultural development. The great thing about what I do with my kids is to show them that it’s so great being bi-cultural.

I’ve taught them it’s important to live in the two worlds between Maori and non-Maori, and mov-ing across. One thing I’d really like to be doing is assisting Sumner and Redcliffs around the Maori cultural side of the area. There is a lot of rich Maori cultural his-tory on that side of the Port Hills, where there a lot of very signifi-cant cultural areas.

FAMILY MAN: Chris and Nuk Korako have two sons who were born in the United Kingdom, and two who were born in New Zealand.

Information is now available about the effects of the Port Hills Lyttelton Plan.

Following a consultation process, Lyttelton Port of Christchurch has provided a four-volume information pack-age outlining the assessment of effects of the Port Lyttelton plan to Environment Canter-bury.

The community can access the information in hard copy at local libraries, the Lyttelton Information Centre, and Port Talk in London St, as well as online.

LPC environmental manager Kim Kelleher presented the information to Banks Peninsula city councillor Andrew Turner.

“I have always been an advo-cate for the community being well informed of this plan. We

live and breathe the develop-ments at the port and decisions made today will have a large effect on future generations. It’s great that LPC is involving the community in this process,” said Mr Turner.

The plan outlines how the port can be rebuilt and enhanced to efficiently and sustainably cater for Canterbury’s freight demands, as well as opening up waterfront space for community access. The information package includes comprehensive effects assessments, LPC’s proposed changes to regulatory documents and feedback from the extensive communications and engagement process.

“LPC operates within an ac-tive and interested community

and we appreciate its contribu-tion of ideas and consideration of these long- term plans, “said LPC chief executive Peter Davie.

“Making this information publicly available is part of an open and transparent process and we want to make sure local people know where to access the information.”

In December 2014 LPC handed over the information package to ECan which is now preparing a preliminary draft Lyttelton Port Recovery Plan.

ECan will start its own for-mal community consultation process in April.

Public submissions can be made during this time and ECan staff will be available at the Port Talk site on the corner of London and Oxford streets.

DETAILS: City councillor Andrew Turner receives the information package on behalf of the Lyttelton community from LPC environmental manager Kim Kelleher.

The long-awaited enhancement and renewal project for McCormacks Bay is now truly happening.

Monthly working bees under the guid-ance of park ranger Andrew Crossland are starting to see a difference already.

It is just fabulous to see the interest of local residents who are rolling up their sleeves and donning gumboots to tidy this long-neglected wetland area.

Planting of 400 seedlings to date, re-moval of stones off the mudflats, litter clean-ups have already started and now we are concentrating on some much overdue pruning of trees.

At this rate the walking track will

soon be accessible again without hav-ing to dodge branches.

Clearing the weedy undergrowth will allow for replanting of native trees and shrubs.

We have a long way to go but we are starting to see a difference already which is most exciting.

We could still do with more elbow grease, and if you interested to give the working team a hand email [email protected] and I will post you a list of working bee dates.

Residents gathered for the Great Sumner Picnic at St Leonards Square last month. The day was filled with pony rides, a bouncy castle and face painting. Music was provided by Angus & Tyler, Sumner Kids with Talent, Rockers of All Ages, Sumner Silver Band and The Tutors. The Taylors Mistake Surf Live Saving Club were the tug-of-war winners of the day.

Pirate’s Corner

GARY MANCH NAVIGATION SAFETY OFFICER

Hi there, well we are coming to the end of the boating season, and in Canterbury we have had a very good summer without major inci-dents in the recreational boating area.

Well done to all you boaties out there.

Unfortunately, one group of water users come to my attention more than others, and it’s the jet-skiers.

I receive more complaints about jet-skiers than I do any other wa-tercraft, mainly for them going too fast close to shore, or near other boats or swimmers.

Our bylaws are available on our website and every person using a watercraft is responsible for mak-ing sure they are aware of them.

I actually believe some of the is-sues with not only jet-skiers, but

people new to the boating scene is that they have had no training, and do not understand the basic rules of the sea.

Training is available from the coastguard through day and night classes, or by correspondence. It’s well worth considering.

Now as a pirate it’s very rare that we ‘fess up to mistakes, but yes, I did put you wrong in one of my articles, about the speed of vessels near a diver or diving flag, you are not allowed to do more than five knots within 50m of another vessel or person in or on the water.

And in the case of a diving flag, you must not exceed five knots within 200m of that flag, sorry for my typo – I said 50m, which was absolutely wrong and I will have to walk the plank I guess.

I might wait for the water to get warmer though.

That’s it from me, be safe out there.

Slow down a bit jet-skiers

What a great picnic

Fitness trackers

Keep track of your fitness

TECHNOLOGY IS advancing in ways we could never imagine, and now it could help you get fit.

Wearable fitness trackers – that simply look like watches – can track your steps, heartbeat, or even send alerts from your phone and control your workout music.

They’re high tech, highly popu-lar, and they’re here to stay, gym owner Hayden Richards said.

“It’s more than just a fad. As technology has advanced and the industry has decided what’s important to track, these are becoming a much bigger thing. It’ll be around for a long time.”

Mr Richards, who owns corpo-rate gym Show Place Fitness, said an increasing number of his cli-ents are wearing fitness trackers.

“I suppose it’s all coming down to information consumption.”

But using technology to improve workouts is not new for the gym, which uses an app to send workout programmes directly to its clients.

That means no matter where they are, clients can still be sent

their custom-workouts, complete with video demonstrations of the exercises they are to do.

Exercise and staying healthy were top priorities this year for 54 per cent of Kiwis who took part in

a recent Microsoft survey. When asked what technology

tools they would use to help them achieve these goals, 50 per cent chose a desktop computer or a laptop, followed by smartphone (42 per cent), apps (35 per cent), social networks (34 per cent) and tablet devices (34 per cent).

“Wearables” is a new area of fitness-based technology that has taken off, with fitness track-ers being especially popular. Essentially they are high-tech pedometers that measure more than just steps, and they are designed to be worn all the time to measure daily activity.

As well as showing you when you were working out the hardest, they’ll also record your heart rate when it spikes when you wake up to your alarm in the morning, or perhaps while watching a nail-biter of a cricket match.

Fitness trackers sit in an odd space behind fully-fledged smart-watches, Consumer NZ tech expert Hadyn Green said.

“On the one hand they’re a device designed to track some simple metrics about you. On the other, they’re another device to carry, connect to your phone and charge every few days.”

But while he admitted the distinction is subjective, he said if you really want your band to

be useful and “not just an ugly reminder you haven’t walked 10,000 steps for the fourth day in a row” you’ll need to use the data they provide.

Your information can be linked to a smartphone app, or you can upload it to a tracking website through your home computer.

Being able to download your data (as a spreadsheet) is the only way to get to the nitty gritty of how you’re performing. Some offer this free, while others cost either a yearly fee or require a hefty amount of coding.

The next part has been dubbed ‘gameifying’ by Mr Richards: “Health providers are using it to gameify your health and wellness by putting you on leader boards and showing your progress.”

Suddenly getting fit has become similar to a game of Candy Crush Saga or Call of Duty – where you’re killing off calories, advanc-ing through the levels and getting your scores on a leader board.

It appeals differently depending on your personality, Mr Richards said.

“Those that are naturally com-petitive can see who is king of the mountain and compare with their peers, while someone who likes to see numbers on sheets at the end of their routine can look at their stats.”

Exercise and staying healthy are a big priority for Kiwis, and fitness trackers are allowing us to keep an eye on our progress like never before. Emma-Jane McLennan reports

ON TRACK: A fitness tracker allows you to compare workouts and record progress.

digitallyBut Mr Green is uncon-

vinced that the watches are useful.

“I see more of a future in smartwatches than in fitness trackers. However, smart-watches aren’t exactly rug-ged in their designs. So fit-ness trackers might become a “sometimes” gadget,

something you only wear on runs or during workouts.”

But while the tech expert has his doubts on the fitness trackers, Mr Richards is confident they’ll have a future in New Zealand.

He said the technology will continue to advance until it starts linking up

with gym equipment.“Those machines will link

up with your fitness tracker in future, so you could track your progress even if you’re on a cross trainer, treadmill or bicy-cle. That technology is being developed at the moment. But there will be a huge price tag to buying that equipment.”

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A FITNESS TRACKER

• A step counter will measure steps, although accuracy will vary depend-ing on what you input as your height, weight, and in some cases, pace length.

• A distance counter meas-ures distance based on steps, or sometimes GPS function, which is more accurate.

• A calorie counter con-verts the number of steps and heart rate, if available, into calories burned.

• A sleep tracker claims to measure sleep quality, based on how restless you are while you sleep.

• An alarm can be useful, especially if it’s a buzzer on your wrist.

• An altimeter is used

to measure the degree of effort made in exercise, rather than just the dis-tance.

• A milestone alert and reminders are an incentive to keep going.

• A heart rate monitor is a useful barometer of effort and can be used to track your workout more accu-rately.

Mixing it up herb-styleBy Tod PalenskiI OFTEN say less is more when it comes to herbs. But the plants themselves don’t always heed my advice, growing at rates of knots and producing more stems than I can cook dishes to flavour-enhance.

That’s why we stock mixed herb variety packs, like our curly parsley, Italian parsley and coriander combo. Depending on rate at which you consume herbs and garnishes, the smaller num-ber of seedlings per herb means you should end up with about the right amount of each, without any taking over your garden.

Keen to mix things up at

your place? Once you have seedlings in your hands, it‘s time to get planting.

What I like about parsley (both the curly and Ital-ian variety) is that it can be grown in virtually anything.

It loves a big herb or vege garden, of course, flourish-ing in a sunny, well-drained spot. But it does just as well in a small pot on the windowsill, or in a hanging basket with something like polyanthus or strawberries around the outside.

Coriander also loves full sun (at this time of year) and a well- drained spot in the garden, but unlike parsley, doesn’t thrive well on the windowsill.

You can, however, get away with a large, deep pot on the deck. Just make sure you water it in the morning so it can dry off during the day and avoid getting damp.

What you might not know is that it’s best to eat parsley and coriander as soon as they’re ready, as they both go to seed. That’s why I suggest you plant a new seedling every few weeks or couple of months to keep these staple herbs in ready supply.

Just pop in to your local garden centre to replenish your stock.

That way you’ll be adding just the right amount of flavour all year round.

TASTY: Coriander likes a well-drained spot in the garden.

FLAVOUR: Parsley can be grown anywhere.

GIVE AWAYLone Star by Paullina SimonsFrom the author of Tully and The Bronze Horseman comes an epic new romantic saga - heart-wrenching and passionate, this compelling story of love lost and found will stay with you forever ...

Falling in love was the easy part ... Chloe is weeks away from college when she embarks on a grand European adventure with her boyfriend and two best friends. Their destination is Barcelona, with its promise of romance and mystery, but first they must detour through the historic cities of Eastern Europe to settle an old family debt. As they traverse the unfamiliar landscape of the post-Communist world, Chloe meets a boy on a train who is going off to war. Johnny carries a guitar, an easy smile - and a lifetime of secrets. The trip becomes a treacherous journey into Europe’s and Johnny’s darkest past - a journey that threatens to shatter the bonds holding together four lifelong friends.

From Riga to treblinka to trieste, Chloe must face her deepest desires colliding with the future she thought she wanted. For Chloe and Johnny only one thing is certain: whatever their destination, their lives will never be the same.

Praise for Paullina Simons: ‘Prepare to have your emotions wrung so completely you’ll be sobbing your heart out one minute and laughing through your tears the next’. - Company.

A Reunion of Ghosts by Judith Claire MitchellWhat if the man who invented chemical weapons was also a grandfather, and what if his great-grandchildren grew up to be three hilarious, introverted, deeply-haunted sisters? And what if those sisters co-wrote a fascinating, funny, and deeply sad 350-page suicide note? Then you’d have A REUNION OF GHOSTS.’ Anthony Doerr.

Meet the Alter sisters: Lady, Vee and Delph. These three mordantly witty, complex women share their family’s apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. They love each other fiercely, but being an Alter isn’t easy. Bad luck is in their genes, passed down through the generations. Yet no matter what life throws at these siblings, they always have a wisecrack – and each other.

In the waning days of 1999, the sisters decide it’s time to close the circle of the Alter curse. But first, as the world counts down to the dawn of a new millennium, Lady, Vee and Delph must write the final chapter of a saga generations in the making – one that is inexorably intertwined with that of the twentieth century itself. Unspooling threads of history, personal memory and family lore, they weave a mesmerising account of their lives that stretches back decades to their great-grandfather, a brilliant scientist whose professional triumph became the sinister legacy that defines them.

Magnificent and heartbreaking, A REUNION OF GHOSTS is an epic novel about three unforgettable women, bound to each other and their remarkable family through the blessings and the burdens bestowed by blood.

Pretty and practical pansiesBy Tod PalenskiI’m going to start by being per-fectly honest with you: pansies are not cool.

They’re not en vogue, and they’re certainly not on trend. They don’t fit in with Pacifica landscapes, Zen-inspired gardens or clean cut, contemporary back yards.

Yet, pansies remain one of the most popular flowers around. Why? Put simply; they’re pretty and practical.

In fact, pansies are one of the easiest flowers to grow. As long as they’re planted before the cool weather sets in, they’ll survive through rain, wind and even frosts.

As well as being hardy, they’re perfect for adding bursts of colour to winter gardens, and make great garden beds and borders. The pet-als can also be used for a variety of crafts, like potpourri making and pressed flower decorating (not that I do too much of that myself, I might add!).

So, let me tell you how to get started. First, think about your colour scheme, there are a full spectrum of colours, from blues to yellows to reds, as well as mixed colour varieties.

To plant, choose a spot in the garden that receives morning sun and has good drainage. Spend some time enriching your soil – it

will revitalise your garden after a dry summer.

I also recommend you boost soil fertility and encourage bright,

healthy blooms by adding organic compost and fertiliser.

Once that’s done, dig a wide, shallow hole for each plant and

space the holes 10cm to 20cm apart. Make sure the holes are wide enough so the plant’s roots don’t become cramped. Cover the plant roots with garden soil and give them a good watering, then add a layer of mulch to retain moisture, suppress weeds and keep frosts at bay.

If you’re after an alternative planting spot, you can’t look past a hanging basket. In fact, I can’t think of a flower more perfectly designed for this. Just remember

not to over water. If you’re not sure, put your finger

in the soil to test. If it’s still moist, don’t add any water.

Wherever you choose to plant, you’ll be comforted by the knowl-edge that pansies truly are ‘plant and forget’ flowers. Just make sure they don’t get too dry. Pick the flowers as they fade to encourage more blooms and don’t be worried – the more you pick the more you produce!

Like I said, pretty and practical.

EASY: Pansies are hardy, they will survive through winter weather.

FOR FRUIT crops, autumn is perhaps the most frenetic time of the year.

It is also the most fruitful as a steady procession of crops fill the pantry, the fridge and the freezer. At this time of year, I find I hardly get to any other gardening except mowing and weed spraying, as fruit picking and processing dominate my time. It’s not a time to take the eye off the ball though, as many of the jobs done now will save time and prevent pest or disease infestations later.

First to get the treatment are the plums. Once the fruit is picked, it’s straight into stubbing back the vigorous, upright water shoots to encourage more fruitful spur and lateral growth next year and to reduce the amount of vegetative growth that hard winter pruning can induce. Pruning in autumn also helps avoid possible silver-leaf infection. Over-vigorous peaches and nectarines can be pruned now, too.

Autumn is also the best time to wrap pipfruit tree trunks with corrugated cardboard. This provides a shelter for pupating

codling moth caterpillars that come down from the fruit at this time of year. Add a band of grease below the band to stop them continuing their journey. What many people forget to do is remove and burn or bin the band during winter. This is the essential step as it removes the pupae from the tree and destroys them. Otherwise, all you are doing is providing a lovely home for them!

For the same reason, gather any diseased or insect-infested fruit. Fruit should be destroyed

away from the tree to reduce the amount of disease spores, such as brown rot, or hibernating insects, including codling moth or guava moth, that carry over until next season. I find a handy method is to throw the fruit onto the lawn, where the mulching mower does the job for you. The mower is also good for dealing with fallen diseased leaves.

A final thinning round through the citrus is worthwhile to reduce the chances of biennial bearing, particularly on the mandarins so

prone to this problem. Wherever there are more than

about three or four fruit in a cluster remove the excess now. If trees are looking yellowed and stressed, give any heavy bearing citrus an extra feed with specially formulated citrus fertiliser or blood and bone if just extra leaf growth is needed to counter the heavy crop.

Passionfruit are now in full fruit and very prone to fungal and bacterial diseases. Keep the area around the vine weed-free

and open to air movement to help reduce these afflictions.

Both these and tamarillos are very prone to disease-spreading leaf hopper and whitefly (and psyllid on tamarillos), which have an explosive surge in numbers at this time of year.

I stripped most of the little fruit off my avocado tree again this year, as it is still recovering from phytophthora root disease and loading up with fruit is a sure way to send the tree into permanent decline. For trees that are bearing a heavy crop at this time, however, an application of citrus fertiliser is worthwhile (at citrus tree rates) to help the fruit size and give the tree a boost of growth for next year’s crop.

All of this plum’s water

shoots can be cut back.

Andrew Steens outlines tasks to keep fruit trees happy and free from future infestations.

Apples with codling moth larvae inside should be removed now.

Step back in time at Larnach Castle

I’M NOT sure why, but my wife has had a long-term fascination with Dunedin’s Larnarch Castle.

Perhaps she romanticises about how the moneyed classes once lived in a more genteel, bygone era, or it could be because the place is rumoured to be haunted.

She first visited the castle at age 13 when it was largely neglected with only the ballroom having been renovated. Nine years ago she took our daughter on a holi-day to Dunedin which targeted the chocolate delights of Cadbury World. As an aside, they paid the castle another visit, my wife was completely in awe of the transfor-mation.

Learning that accommodation and dining was now available at Larnarch Castle with the addition of The Lodge having been built in the castle grounds, she was eager to spend a night there.

We seized the opportunity on a recent trip down south when we attended the annual Gibbston Valley Winery concert followed by the sights of Queenstown, a fabu-lous drive to Invercargill on the Southern Scenic Route continuing back on the coastal road through Balclutha to Dunedin.

On arrival at Larnach Castle, and upon checking in, we placed the prerequisite order for dinner from a tempting three-course table d’hôte menu.

The Lodge has 12 themed rooms, fortuitously we had booked the Rose Room which turned out to be a real find. Roses, of course, decorated the room, there are two huge beds, a sunken bathroom and a glorious view out to Port Chalmers.

Our evening began with drinks in the library, the traditional men’s retreat after dinner (the ladies used to retire to their own lounge across the hallway). Interestingly,

this was also the room reputed to be where the decision was made to give women the vote in 1893, the first country in the world to do so.

After mingling with our hosts and fellow diners, we were escort-ed into the music room, which is larger than the traditional dining room. The dining room only gets used for smaller groups.

Our salad entree, beef and lamb main, and cheesecake dessert were all good choices, we and our 17 other fellow tourists dined at a long table amongst the origi-nal furnishings and olde worlde atmosphere.

After our host prompted us to introduce ourselves to each other, she delivered a comprehensive dialogue of the history of the Larnarch family and the castle, and its environs, in-between each course of the meal. It was interest-ing and was delivered in an enter-taining style.

Larnach Castle was built between 1871 and 1887 as the residence of William Larnach, a prominent entrepreneur and politician. The complex contains 43 rooms, it required a staff of 46 servants.

The ballroom was built as a 21st birthday present for Larnach’s favourite daughter Kate in 1887. She died at the age of 26 of typhoid, and her ghost is still reputed to haunt the ballroom.

The ghost of Larnach’s first wife, Eliza, is also said by some to haunt the castle.

The castle, which Larnach him-self simply called “The Camp,” did not ensure his happiness. After a series of personal and financial setbacks he committed suicide at Parliament Buildings in 1898.

Of course, the overnight experi-ence includes a self-guided tour of the castle and property, you can

even download a smartphone app which will give you a recorded commentary as you pass through room to room. My wife and I chose the more traditional map/guide which is just as informative.

The tour takes around an hour and, as in our case, finished with a delicious cup of tea and cake in the ballroom, part of which con-tains a café.

Accommodation at Larnach

Castle is divided into two sec-tions. The Lodge has the themed rooms, or else you can choose the less expensive Stables which, as its name suggests, is a former stable block, complete with some of the adornments from its time. The mezzanine floor has six single/double/twin rooms with shared bathroom.

Below is the area set aside for breakfast, The Lodge and The Stables guests combine for an all-you-can-eat continental breakfast, in addition to friendly waiting staff taking orders for something cooked. We found breakfast to be very social as our dining compan-ions from the previous night came and went in various stages.

Prices start at $160 per night for two adults for Stables accom-modation, that includes castle tour and breakfast.

Our account at The Lodge was $420 for two of us which included the tour of the castle, one night’s luxurious accommodation, pre-dinner drinks, evening meals and breakfast. Drinks during dinner are an extra cost. We found it to be excellent value for money, how-ever, we didn’t connect with the spirit world.

And if a step back in time appeals to you as a traveller, take a guided tour of Olveston House, that is another interesting taste of Dunedin’s history.

MOTORING

By Ross Kiddie

I’VE BEEN fortunate enough to find myself at some interesting destinations as manufacturers eke out places for launch events.

One of the most memorable was when BMW New Zealand recently launched their first front-wheel-drive car (Mini aside), the 2-Series Active Tourer.

It took place in Tasmania and I was paired with a fellow motor-ing writer whom I always look forward to spending time with.

My colleague is from the Waikato and we have become good friends, sharing many a memorable drive programme over the years, we have similar interests – career, lifestyle and music.

As a consequence, we often enter into deep conversations. On the odd occasion that has been our downfall, we have known to get lost on drive pro-grammes. On the BMW event that happened, I pre-empted a turn-off which took us 50km in the wrong direction before we realised the mistake.

As good fortune would have it, the sat nav system sug-gested a bit of a short-cut so we caught up with the rest of the drive group without too much of a delay, but what it served to prove was how capable the Active Tourer is when it is pushed hard on roads that were

a bit of a handling challenge. The 2-Series Active Tourer is

described by BMW as an urban mobility concept, I’d describe it as an SUV with a difference. There’s no doubt that it is a family friendly wagon, the rear seating area is spacious along with a useful load carrying area.

Up front the Active Tourer comes to New Zealand with the choice of two engines, both turbocharged. Here we have the option of a 2-litre diesel and a three-cylinder petrol engine which displaces just 1499cc. If the latter’s capacity looks familiar it is very similar to that which powers the Mini Cooper, although BMW are quick to point out there are differences.

BMW rates the wee three-potter at 100kW with 200Nm of torque available all of the way from 1250rpm to 4300rpm. It is a real honey in terms of honesty and performance. It is also rated with rather amazing fuel usage figures, such as a 5.1l/100km (55mpg) combined cycle rating.

The Active Tourer in this form is also quite powerful, 100kW is nothing to be sneezed at, and if you consider the area where maximum punch is developed, there is adequate acceleration, speed is ushered in well within the realms of acceptability. A standstill to 100km/h time of 9.2sec can be expected.

The Active Tourer is also a

useful handler, it doesn’t quite have the dynamism and natural handling characteristics of rear-drive BMWs but it does equip itself well with strong front-end turn-in and controlled body balance.

Inside, the Active Tourer shares much of the componentry you would find in much of the BMW range. However, it’s true to say it is down-specced a little for our market, at $51,900 and $62,900 (diesel) it is priced so that families can view it as an affordable purchase. But, in true BMW fashion, there are loads of options which can be loaded into the car if finances allow.

While the Active Tourer is a major departure for BMW in terms of chassis construction it is an desirable way for the fam-ily to get into the BMW range. It will satisfy with its functional-ity, frugal usage costs, satisfying driving feel and its capability when presented with a handling challenge.

Price: BMW 218i Active Tourer, $51,900.

Dimensions: length,4342mm; width, 1800mm; height, 1586mm.

Configuration: Three-cylinder transverse, front-wheel-drive, 1499cc, 100kW, 220nm, six-speed automatic.

Performance: 0-100km/h, 9.2sec.

The journey to the nish line has been a di cult one. e council has been horrendous, Ian has had to deal with lost emails, delays, double handling,

triple copies and valuers waiting at the front door when they were due to open (so rates could be calculated). “It would be nice if their

enthusiasm ran at the same pace for permit approval,” says Ian Scott (owner/baker), his greatest wish for the rebuild is that these di culties will not encompass everyone else trying to start again.

Having remained intact while working in a portacom building for three years and eight months, and dealing with the ups and downs of the rebuilding process, it is marvellous for him and the sta to be in a sparkling new spacious building. With the addition of a high-spec apartment upstairs (ready to be

The wait is over, just shy of four years and four shifts later, the Lyttelton Bakery is now in its permanent brand-new, purpose-built premises.

His wonderful sta also share his enthusiasm, as they have followed him loyally and he has added an in-house barrister selling Underground Co ee to complement the bakery’s huge array of delicious daily fresh baked goods made in the new bake house. Pies, buns, lled rolls, cakes and slices are just a few of the delightful goodies on o er. e bakery’s aim is to cater for the good people of Lyttelton: workers, residents and visitors, with fresh baked goods at bakery prices within a café environment.

Ian has been a baker for 36 years, and over that time he has owned nine bakeries all over Christchurch, but Lyttelton and the community here have really found a place in his heart, the reason why he still remains there.

With his 36 years of experience, he has trained 10 apprentices and although his two sons Joshua (a builder) and Liam (in the Air Force) never wanted to sign up for the bakery trade, his daughter Bree decided she would like to follow in her dad’s footsteps and has

been by far his best apprentice, having started just before the earthquake, then nishing o her three-plus year’s trade in the portacom (a space not much bigger than a caravan). is alone has been a mighty achievement, no easy feat, and her dad is justi ably proud as she not only came through her trade with ying colours, but went on to win Young Bread Baker of the Year in 2014.

She was invited to be the only representative from New Zealand to compete. Over three days, Bree and the Australian candidates will be tested on practical baking skills, technical knowledge, presentation and communication skills.

The Koru Clinic in Cashmere is led by Dr Heather Jefferies, an experienced cosmetic physician. Dr Jefferies also has a special

interest in the detection and management of skin cancers, as well as the treatment of problems caused by ageing and too much sun exposure.

“New Zealand sun is harsh. Many of us suffer the effects of too much sun exposure, whether it be skin cancer or just an acceleration of the ageing process, such as early wrinkle formation, poor skin texture or excess pigment deposition. These problems are all manageable and generally can be easily treated,” says Dr Jefferies.

“Feeling confident in your appearance is as important to your overall wellbeing as keeping your body fit,” says Dr Jefferies. “And ensuring your skin is healthy is just as

important as ensuring you have optimised the appearance of your skin.”

New Zealand shares with Australia in having the highest incidence rate of melanoma in the world, simply because of the increased levels of ultraviolet radiation in our region. But while most people are aware of the risk of melanoma, there are other far more common skin cancers that are a result of excess sun exposure.

Melanoma New Zealand recommends we should all have a full skin check by a doctor once per year, and these can be done at the Koru Clinic.

If it is cosmetic medicine treatments such as wrinkle treatments or dermal fillers that you are looking for, then Koru Clinic is also the place to go. Dr Jefferies believes most people now simply want to look younger and more refreshed, rather than looking like they have “had work done”.

The New Zealand Society for Cosmetic Medicine has an intensive training programme for cosmetic medicine doctors.  Dr Jefferies believes it is essential for patients who are considering  injectable wrinkle treatments or facial fillers that they have these performed by suitably qualified doctors.  “This optimises the results, as well as minimising any risks to the clients,” she says.

Summer is over, and now it’s time to take stock and address any damage caused by excess sun exposure this year.

Treatments offered today by cosmetic physicians have been soundly researched and have well-established outcomes so that you can be guaranteed of the effectiveness of a treatment.

Located at 31 Colombo St, Cashmere, phone 372 3589 or visit the website www.koruskin.co.nz.

Tracey Shewan from Koru Healing in New Brighton specialises in acupuncture and treats a broad range of conditions.

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine where tiny needles are placed at particular points on the body to restore imbalances.

“ ese imbalances disrupt the ow of qi (vital energy) through the meridians (energetic pathways running through our bodies). By restoring the balance, this stimulates the body’s ability to heal itself,” says Tracey.

As the cooler weather approaches, Tracey can help clients with immune support, bronchitis and asthma. Acupuncture is also e ective for many other health conditions including chronic pain, migraines, digestion, skin conditions, immune disorders and women’s health issues.

“Tracey’s work with me has been

wonderful. She has helped me with calci c tendonitis in my shoulder as well as lower back and neck issues, and my energy is clearer and stronger,” says client Penelope.

Tracey looks at the whole picture of her client’s health and at the root cause as well as the symptoms.

“Stress and emotional issues can play a huge part in how a person is feeling and these factors are considered in treatment.”

Tracey is also experienced in treating musculoskeletal conditions, such as back and neck pain, sciatica, tendonitis, frozen shoulder, carpal tunnel and tennis elbow.

Acupuncture is also used at the Koru Healing clinic to help and support people with cancer to complement their conventional treatments and reduce the impact of the symptoms caused by radiotherapy and chemotherapy or following surgery.

“Acupuncture can treat symptoms

associated with these cancer treatments such as nausea, fatigue, hot ushes and pain, and also helps reduce stress and anxiety.”

Another option for treating depression and anxiety is Pascha therapy, which is also one of Tracey’s services at Koru Healing.

“Pascha therapy works by supporting a person to open up to and gain better

understanding of their feelings. rough this process comes insight and clarity into what may be needed in order to heal and move forward in life, ultimately leading to a greater sense of self and a feeling of empowerment,” says Tracey.

“A er receiving treatment from Tracey, I was amazed at how relaxed and calm I felt,” says client Laura, while Chris says, “I always experience relief from any symptoms and walk out feeling relaxed and energised.”

RUNNING AHEAD: Sumner Running Club members who represented Canterbury with the Challenge Trophy which they won against Tasman recently. From left: Luca Tracey, team captain John Wells, Beth Hunter and Blake Theobald.

Sumner end decade-long title droughtBY KYLE KNOWLES

Sumner are the senior A two day cricket champions for the first time in 10 years.

They finished on 117 points, eight ahead of Addington in sec-ond. Heathcote finished third.

Going into the last game of the season against Richmond they needed a win to secure the title, which they managed convincingly.

Batting first, Sumner made 211 for 6 before bowling Richmond out twice for 44 and 87 to win by an in-nings and 80 runs.

They could have wrapped the title up in the penultimate round but failed to chase down 149 to beat Merivale-Papanui.

It did not matter, as they took apart Richmond and won the tro-phy for the first time in a decade.

Senior player Dan Vann said the success was down to the clubs depth, with some good young play-ers coming through the ranks who

worked well with the experienced guys in the senior side.

Captain Brendon Wellington was the leading run-scorer for the season, finishing with 659 runs.

Impressive all-rounder Tom Gooday was the leading wicket-taker for the second season in a row, snaring 54 wickets. He also scored 459 runs across all three formats.

Gooday has now taken more than 50 wickets in the season for two years in a row and is about to head to England to play a season of cricket there.

It could have been a fuller trophy cabinet this year for the club, but in the two other forms of the game they fell just short.

In the one-day competition they were losing semi-finalists and they finished third on the Twenty20 ladder.

The club also had a successful ju-nior season, with an increase in its player numbers.
