SPECS

The end of HSV’s Commodore era is fast approaching but the

company is planning to go out with a bang. Hit the ignition button on the GEN-F2 ClubSport R8 LSA and the roar from the 6.2 litre Supercharged LSA Generation IV Alloy V8 engine

instantly signals this legendary nameplate has evolved to a whole new level and is a must-have for Holden enthusiasts on both sides

of the Tasman.

We felt absolutely privileged to review this car for Ebbett Holden Tauranga and on picking up a demonstrator sedan from their Cameron Rd dealership, we nearly made the mistake of thinking it had been adorned with every optional extra available.

However, dealer principal Julian Clements told us the only variance from standard was the slightly enlarged hyper-fl ow wing spoiler and the wheels, which had been upgraded to 20 inch forged rims.

Holden surely has poured everything into what may well be their farewell model.

Other standard gear included HSV’s bi-modal exhaust, navigation, reversing camera, dual-zone climate control and nine-speaker Bose sound system, which sounds incredible if

you ever get bored listening to the throb of that engine – we didn’t.

Holden runs in his veins This week’s Bay Driver was carefully

selected, given the historical nature of this review. Local businessman and self-confessed petrol-head Bernie Gillon used to own 50 per cent of Team Kiwi Racing, which raced Holdens as their cars up until the end of 2006.

In his earlier years Bernie also raced Group A Holdens at the Nissan Mobil 500 in Wellington for two seasons, boasting a best fi nishing position in 1993 of 11th out of a fi eld of more than 50 cars and competing against some big names like Dick John-son, Peter Brock and Tony Longhurst.

Bernie was also a driver for the Mike Pero two-car touring car team, which also drove

Holdens; and he has even raced at Bathurst more than once, making his debut in a VL Walkinshaw Commodore.

It is fair to say Bernie has Holden engine oil running through his veins.

Bernie is still in the industry and owns Flamecrusher – a performance car and hotrod car parts company. He also runs Bay-park Family Speedway. With thousands of laps around Pukekohe Park Raceway under his belt, Bernie’s pedigree and confi dence behind the wheel of Ebbett Holden’s high performance test car was obvious.

We felt safe and privileged to be chauf-feured by such a local legend.

Driving by the seat of your pantsThe fi rst thing Bernie noticed was the heads

up display which shows the gear position and speed refl ected off the windshield. “Haven’t you seen one of those before Bernie?” He replies: “I have never driven a car with one, no”. “Not too distracting?”

“No it’s great, you don’t see it unless you specifi cally look for it,” says Bernie.

We were following the car in front and Bernie says his whole vision was on the other car. “It creates the optical illusion that the display is at the end of your bonnet, you focus on the bonnet and you see the display; so it’s a matter of an eye focus adjustment as opposed to taking your eyes off the road and looking down at your instrument cluster – excellent innovation,” says Bernie.

The next thing Bernie mentioned was the comfort. “Great seats, you really sit right in them, certainly the type of seats that would make you feel comfortable if you were driving the car very hard.

“All of the feedback you get from the car, especially when you start getting to the limits of adhesion come through your bum, spine

and tailbone even before your brain registers what is happening – the saying ‘driving by the seat of your pants’ is actually a very true state-ment,” says Bernie.

“So the fi rmer and more snug the seat, the quicker the reactions you feel from the car.”

Bernie came to a complete stop and then fl oored it for the 0-100km/h test.

Obviously it doesn’t take much to impress the Bay Driver team but it was Bernie’s reac-tion that made me realise this was no ordinary Holden. “Wow – that is stunning perfor-mance,” says Bernie.

“That is almost getting to the performance levels of my Jaguar-TransAm race car in terms of feeling. And that was 800hp – abso-lutely insane!”

Watch this spaceDriving home from our review was an anti-

climax after the adrenalin-pumping ride out to our test location. Hardly anyone spoke – and if it wasn’t for the fact we all had our jobs to get back to we could have driven all day.

Even for me in the rear passenger seat, I missed nothing in terms of the thrill and excitement that this powerful super-charged beast had to offer. And it will remain at the top of my wish list of ‘cars to own before I die’ for many years to come.

We are near the end of the line for the Commodore-based V8-powered machines that have been HSV’s mainstay for more than quarter of a century. And while we don’t know for sure what the future holds for HSV Com-modore, they have a couple of years to reveal the plan while they work on their fi nal swan song – which if the Clubsport R8 is anything to go by, we’re all in for at least one more bloody thrilling ride.

Is this the last hurrah for Holden HSV?

A motorcyclists’ treasure hunt in the West-ern Bay of Plenty last month has given back to a charity providing 24/7 emergency medi-cal assistance on the same roads the riders wheel out their fun.

Bayride Motorcycles was expecting about 60-80 riders to show up for their annual treasure hunt around the Bay on June 19.

But they were blown away when 120 riders showed up to hunt clues on two wheels.

“This was just blinking amazing – I mean holy moly,” says Bayride Motorcycles owner Damian Fleming.

This means the Bayride Annual Treasure Hunt for 2016 raised $502 from entry fees and donations, which has been gifted to St John ambulance to support the work the charity does on the region’s roads.

Damian says groups of six riders had a tonne of dead ends, dilemmas and fun – on and off their bikes – hunting for clues that sent them around the district. And for some, much further afi eld.

Chris Welch and the team from Western Bay Riding Tuition put the hunt together, creating clues and arranging challenges.

“The fi rst clue sent riders to ASB Baypark stadium, where they had to do a scooter chal-lenge,” says Damian. “Then they got a rather ambiguous clue – something about taking an old bus to school. “People got lost all over the place – some went to The Historic Village –

but the correct place was the school on Old Coach Rd at Paengaroa.

“There they had to throw a horseshow over a stick, then get a clue that sent them to Okere Falls. This is where I got lost – halfway down by Whakatane.

“Buying something from The Falls Café released the next clue, which took us to TECT All Terrain Park where participants had to ride an old farm bike on a motocross track as quick as they could.

“The hunt ended at Brewers Bar at Mount Maunganui with a barbecue, with meat kindly supported by The Meat Company.”

Damian says the hunt was their best yet. “The riders had a lot of fun and many got

to meet new friends. “We had a guy come down from Auckland

on a scooter for the day. Others –including fellow motorcycle shop owners – came from Auckland and Hamilton.”

And ultimately, the treasure hunt has seen Bayride hand over a big bounty to St John.

“We’ve gifted this money to St John because they are one of the fi rst responders when motorcyclists get into trouble on the roads.

“The biking community is thankful for what they do,” says Damian, who thanks Western Bay Riding for arranging the event, and The Falls Café, The Meat Company and Brewers Bar for supporting it.
