From a young age, Shannon Moyle remembers classic American cars being an

important part of family life.“Dad was into old cars and I remem-

ber our family travelling the North Island in his cars with family and friends, which was a whole lot of fun,” recalls Shannon, who says the road trip contributed to his love for classics.

This weekend he’ll continue the fun tradition when his family and friends buckle up in his Cadillac and Chevy for a shorter road trip to join thou-sands of classic American motoring enthusiasts at the Whangamata Beach Hop.

It’s become a regular event for Shan-non and wife Patria since they started going 10 years ago. Inspired in part by the cars they saw, and Shannon’s memories of his father’s cars, they

soon were getting their own fi rst classic – a 1957 Chevy Bel Air they brought in from the US.

“Over the years dad had too many old cars to remember, but a 1956 Chevy Bel Air and a 1961 Corvette convertible still stand out,” says Shannon, who laughs when recalling how his car-mad father wouldn’t let him drive the fi rst car the 15-year-old bought for a year until he’d completed his exams.

“Mum and Dad were fi ne with me buying it, as I had saved my own money, but as long as I was under their roof studying my exam was more important than cars.”

The HK Holden stayed up on blocks for a year, as Shannon gave it a little love, starting a passion that saw him own three 1964 EH Holdens during the next years. “They were

heaps of fun to cruise up and down the Mount with the boys.”

Looking back Shannon says restoring the Bel Air to its original condition was a “major undertaking” but a great challenge.

“We had a great team of people helping restore it, but being involved in the process from start to fi nish meant we were really proud of the end result.”

In comparison, the 1963 Cadillac Eldorado con-vertible – which they purchased last year – has only

needed a little tidying. “We bought it for a bit of fun and it’s a great car

for the Beach Hop,” says Shannon, who rates the event’s appeal as being as much about family.

“The Beach Hop is a good chance to spend time with family, enjoy the cars, and wander around in the sun and enjoy Whanga.”

This year both cars have gone to the beachside town as part of an 18-strong group of family and friends.

Sideline Sid couldn’t wait to get behind the wheel of a BMW for the fi rst time when given his latest

Bay Driver mission – to put a BMW 4 Series 428i Coupe M Sport through its paces.

What he found is a sports car lurking within the framework of a BMW luxury sedan.

Knowing little about the history of BMW, a little research revealed the Baverische Motoren Werke – or translated into English, the Bavarian Motor Works – has manufactured cars and engines in Germany since 1916. BMW is one of the ‘German Big Three’ luxury automakers along with Audi and Mercedes-Benz, which are the three top-selling luxury automakers in the world.

What Sideline Sid wasn’t prepared for is the marriage of absolute luxury with genuine sports car performance.

The BMW 4 Series 428i we took out and about on some of the highways and byways of the Western Bay of Plenty, dazzled in an Alpine White paint fi nish. The marketing brochure suggests the BMW 4 Series has dynamism that moves – even when standing still. What it does have is an athletic-looking style that suggests a vehicle that with pace to burn. The entire vehicle design is a testament to the BMW Effi centDynamics philosophy that reduces air resistance and fuel consumption.

Lifting the bonnet revealed a lithe beast of a BMW Twin Power Turbo petrol engine that promised to deliver power and uncompromising acceleration. Taking the BMW Coupe out on the toll road to Hamilton, we found extremely responsive acceleration that would blast the cobwebs away if

unleashed to its maximum output. Exceedingly receptive steering and outstanding braking

make the car a dream to drive. Electric power steering makes bumps in the road non-existent, while the BMW 428i shifts gears without noticing courtesy of the eight-speed automatic transmission.

The only small irritation for Sideline Sid was getting into the low-slung two-door coupe, with the car’s design better-suited to the young and adventurous rather than the old and

creaky. However, once entrenched in the driver’s seat, all was forgiven with another touch of BMW luxury. The

BMW 428i is set off with the Black Dakota leather interior, with the racing car-like front seats incred-ibly comfortable and with ability to re-position back, forward and upwards at the touch of a button.

A state-of-the-art information screen contains multi-media functions, radio, telephone and

navigation aids. However, it is the BMW Head-Up display that blew us away, with its practicality out on the road. Seemingly sitting out in front of the bonnet, was images of a speedometer accom-panied by a maximum allowable speed road sign, which picked up information from the external road

signage. The display’s prominent position makes it easy to use, while allowing other driving information to be projected into the driver’s line of sight.

The big features of the BMW 428i are safety along with economy and effi ciency. The Active Cruise Control comes with stop and go function, which includes radar-based colli-sion warning and light braking function; and it’s particularly convenient when driving in city traffi c. In addition, the system measures the distance to the vehicles in front and maintains a pre-selected distance. BMW Active Protection is a preventive occupant safety system whereby if a critical situ-ation arises on the road, the front safety belts are reversibly pretensioned and the side windows closed.

Fuel effi ciency is aided by a number of features in the BMW 428i. With a combined fuel consumption 6.3 litres per 100km, the BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology plays a big part in signifi cantly reducing fuel consumption, while at the same time boosting power output across a wide range of engine speeds. The optimum gear shift indicator and brake energy regeneration play their part in the making the BME 428i a very effi cient converter of petrol to power on the road.

However, it is a number of nifty characteristics that make the BMW 4 Series 428i stand out in its class. Starting with keyless entry and start, which however created a small prob-lem for the car reviewer when he placed the entry technology on the divider between the two front seats, only to have it fl y under the front passenger seat. If you ever had to stand in front of your car returning from the shops with goods in both hands and you wanted to open the boot – the BMW 428i solution is contactless opening of the boot courtesy of

the vehicle entry controller. The camera systems make backing a breeze, with the iDrive Touch controller giving you convenient control of the iDrive system with one hand.

Car reviewers tend to use plenty of pretty and descriptive words and wax lyrical about the vehicle of their current attention. Sideline Sid believes there is only one true indicator of your appreciation of the vehicle under review – would you buy one. In the case of the BMW 4 Series 428i Coupe M Sport, it has been added to the bucket list as my dream car. Hopefully, one day soon, we’ll be off to Coombes Johnston on Hewlett Rd in Mount Maunganui to put our name down for a new BMW 4 Series 428i Coupe M Sport.

From the streets of Belfast to the roads of Tauranga, car dealer Tony Hammond has had a noteworthy journey to become one

of the city’s longest standing independent car dealers.

At age 10, Tony boarded a ship with his three brothers, two sisters and parents, bound for a new life in New Zealand – and unaware the family’s natural musical talent would soon make them stars in their new home.

The six children entered a talent quest on the ship, singing together as a group for the fi rst time. Their musical gift was clear, with the group win-ning the talent quest and continuing to perform after settling in Tauranga.

A year after arriving, the Hammond Family group was being described as New Zealand’s version of the Partridge Family, receiving acclaim on the TV talent show ‘Studio One’ where they were runner-up in the New Faces category for their songs ‘Amber’ and ‘Short-nin Bread’. EMI followed with a single and an album with a photograph of the six redheads look-ing sharp in matching sky blue pant suits and vests.

The group, which was runner-up in Studio One’s New Faces category, was catapulted into the spot-light with stories in ‘The New Zealand Women’s Weekly’, regular radio airplay and concerts around

the country, including as support for Roy Orbison.“We were kept busy for about fi ve or six years with

performances on telethons, the Ray Woolf and Max Cryer shows, and concerts at sound shells and cossie clubs around the country,” recalls Tony, who along with his brother Noel are the only siblings still based in Tauranga.

“It’s only looking back that we realised just how big it was,” says Tony, who regularly meets people who remember the group.

These days Tony’s music is limited to sponsor-ing events and performing at family celebrations. Instead, he’s followed in the footsteps of his father James – who had Tauranga’s Mazda franchise – to earn a top reputation in the motoring industry with the dealership he’s run for the last 28 years.
