It’s got a tongue-in-cheek name, but when it comes to supporting The Cancer

Society of New Zealand the Shitbox Rally ain’t mucking about.

In February 2016, Shitbox Rally NZ will steer 150 competitors, driving cars worth under $1700, embark on a seven day, 2550km round-trip journey that starts and ends in Auckland.

The journey includes a stopover in Opotiki before ralliers travel through the Bay of Plenty on their way back to Auckland.

Since its inception the rally has raised more than $6.1 million for cancer research in Australia, and money raised by the upcoming rally will go to the Cancer Society NZ.

Founder James Freeman is excited to bring the event across the Tasman for its international debut and hopes over time to mirror their successes in “the land of the long white cloud”.

“The route will showcase quiet, unsealed back roads that offer the remote and spectacular scenery that New

Zealand is famous for. It is going to be a truly unique and special Shitbox Rally.

“We will organise everything to do with the cars, so all teams need to do is arrive, bid on a vehicle, pack and head off for the trip of a lifetime.”

Last year the Cancer Society, which doesn’t receive government funding, invested $1,602,882 into scientifi c research across New Zealand. The society’s chief executive Claire Austin says they are pleased to have been chosen as a partner of Shitbox Rally NZ.

“As the heart and soul of the rally, James’ personal experience when he lost his parents to cancer 12 months apart, his drive to fi nd a cure, and fundraising programme is an inspiration.”

A limited number of spaces on Shitbox Rally NZ are available to Kiwi-based teams. To register or for more information visit www.shitboxrally.co.nz

To celebrate a century of trucking in New Zealand, the Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow is inviting truck owners from around the country to register.

The Warbirds and Wheels Century of Trucking display will be one of the feature exhibits at the 2016 airshow, taking place at Wanaka Airport from March 25-27.

WOW event manager Mandy Deans says the annual event has a fi ne tradition of not just celebrating great aircrafts but also other forms of motorised vehicles.

“We’re very excited to be focusing on trucks for 2016,” says Mandy.

“Several airshows ago we had an amazing display of Fords, which proved a big hit with our visitors.

“This time round we’re hoping to have up to 50 vehicles of all shapes and sizes from 1916 to the most modern trucks.”

Truck owners will need to register as organisers want to ensure they get a good representation of different trucks from various decades during the 100 years.

To register your truck at the Warbirds Over Wanaka airshow, visit www.warbirdsoverwanaka.com or call the WOW offi ce on 03 443 8619 or email: [email protected]

Growing up, friends of the family owned a Skoda dealership – back when they were basic cars from

the Eastern Bloc. We thought he was mad, but he loved them and

he always believed something great would come of the Skoda marque.

He wasn’t wrong, although I doubt even such a devoted follower could have predicted the pinnacle of the rags to riches tale. I took the new Octavia RS for a spin and I’m still smiling now.

This could have been the shortest review in history. It could have started with ‘Wow’ and ended in ‘Buy one’ – with no words in between. This car falls squarely into my perfect car range – it has to look good, feel good, be comfortable, refi ned for daily use yet have power on tap. Consider all those boxes checked. The Octavia RS has another trick up its sleeve though: RS Mode.

RS Mode allows you to change the setup of the vehicle, from your more civilized eco-mode, to sport mode. You can even set up a customised mode, picking the options that suit you, such as how the

steering feels, or how the engine performs. Sport mode is where the magic

begins. Somehow, just a tap on a screen transforms a civilized 4-cylinder engine into what sounds like a growling V8 and a grown man into a teenager.

It seems to open the dam on the turbo and suddenly you’re in a road-going track car, with never-ending power and fast-changing paddle shift gears.

“Good evening Offi cer, I was doing what now? No sir, this car uses only 6.2l/100km, it couldn’t possibly be going that fast.” (Disclaimer: That’s a terrible defence – please don’t speed).

Fun as it may be though, you do have to switch it off in town. It’s a little too eager for the mean streets of Tauranga! Thankfully, though, returning to normal driving mode gives you the opposite pleasurable experience. Smooth, quiet, comfortable and still with plenty of power. Scoop up the family, head down to the park so the kids can have some fun too. Soften up the missus before you tell her about your encounter with the law – hopefully she won’t hit you in front of the kids!

Inside this car is a great place to be. The RS bucket seats are very comfortable;

controls are easy and obvious; everything is well-positioned and nicely appointed. It’s smart, feels quality built and very welcoming. It has all the gadgets you could want: links with your phone, sat nav, radio, CD, even a phone pocket to boost phone signal. Doing a lap of the country in this car would be a joy. RS mode for the winding roads, eco for the city and comfort everywhere in between. Bliss!

Now for the downside – the options list. How am I supposed to drool over options when practically everything comes as standard?! Out of a list of more than 80 options, there’s only 16 left to choose from! Curse you Skoda for your well-optioned vehicle.

No doubt all those standard features mean a horrendous price tag? How does being priced from $47,000 sound? Yes, that’s $47,000 for the manual and $49,000 for the Auto/DSG.

Pick yourself up off the fl oor, this isn’t a dream. I still can’t believe it costs so little for so much car, it’s truly astounding value. When you consider the plethora of yawn-boxes you can buy for that price, you’d be off your rocker to pass up a European gem like this for life in the

dull lane anywhere else. Even some other Euros would fi nd it hard to compete on this level.

So to the important question. Would I buy one? No. I wouldn’t buy one. I’d buy two: a sedan for the week and a wagon for the weekends! Yes, all that sportiness and refi nement comes in a wagon package too, for a mere snip of $2500 difference in price. The wagon is also a real looker too, so your dog would feel proud sat in the back, looking down on the people who didn’t buy a Skoda.

Head to Farmer Auto Village on Hewletts Road to test drive one today.

Opotiki driver Michael Young is set to tackle the incredibly tough Malaysian Rally, based in Johor

Bahru against world-class competitors this weekend.

The 22-year-old driver is the only Kiwi competing in the Asia Pacific Rally Championship and is ready to continue his fight for the overall APRC Championship.

But Michael says he knows this rally in particular is one of the toughest on the calendar.

“There are so many massive challenges in Malaysia but the extreme heat and temperatures in the car is one of the main ones,” he explains. “It’s always a big shock to the system arriving in Malaysia where

it’s nice and warm. The heat is perfect for a holiday but not so much when you’re driving a rally car.”

The 2015 event also marks a special anniversary for Michael and Hamilton co-driver Malcolm Read as they celebrate the third year of their successful partnership, which started in Malaysia in 2013.

“Malcolm and I have had a lot of fun over the past three years and we make a pretty good team,” says Michael. “In the three years that we’ve competed together, we’ve managed to finish every rally and have enjoyed lots of success as a result. We’re keen to continue this trend in Malaysia.”

Michael describes the Malaysian roads as

tough due to them being “very tight and twisty”, and slower speeds means there is no air coming into the car which will make it hard to concentrate.

There are also deep ditches that line the road which are “easy to slip in to, but hard to get out of, plus there are palm oil trees that are everywhere,” he says.

On the back of graduating ‘Top of the Class’ at the 2015 Motorsport New Zealand Elite Motorsport Academy, Michael feels he is prepared for the notoriously tough event.

“We learnt a lot of things at the Elite Motorsport Academy that are going to be a huge help in Malaysia. We talked about things like hydration, mental skills and heat stress there so all of those will be vital for success in Malaysia with the hot and

challenging conditions.”It won’t be an easy task for the

Kiwi duo to win the event outright with a number of internationally acclaimed drivers competing this weekend.

Their main competition in the Production Cup category will be Indonesian driver Subhan Aksa who has enjoyed considerable success at the Malaysian Rally in the past.

“I think Subhan will be my biggest rival in Malaysia as he has a lot of experience on these slippery roads and has done well here in the past. We have battled all year in similar cars and I’m sure Malaysia will be no different.”

The Malaysian Rally begins with a ceremonial start this Friday evening at the Angsana Complex in Johor Bahru.

Teams will then compete across 14 closed special stages, totalling 226.56km, at the palm oil plantations around Kota Tinggi over Saturday and Sunday, August 15-16.
