Lieutenant-Commander Gerard St John Roden BUXTON There is a cremation memorial to him in Trunch Churchyard. The Buxtons were land and property owners in the area.RN, CStJ, b. 28 September 1927, d. 25 February 2008 aged 80, was scion of the Buxton Baronets and was brother and heir presumptive to Sir Jocelyn Buxton, 7th Baronet; he was b 28 Sept 1927, son of Capt Henry Roden Victor Buxton, CBE, RN (1890-1970), by his 1st wife the former Dorothy St John; married 1954, Judith Averil Campbell (b 12 Nov 1927), scion of the Barons Colgrain, daughter of the Hon Angus Dudley Campbell, by is wife the former Joan Esther Sybilla Pakenham, descended from the Barons (later Earls of Longford), by whom he had issue, Charlotte, Crispin and Laura. The son, Crispin Charles Gerard Buxton, b 29 Mar 1958, is now heir pres. to his 83-year-old uncle. Private cremation followed by a Thanksgiving Service at Kinghorn Parish Church, Kinghorn, by Kirkcaldy, Fife on Monday 3rd March 2008.

He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Commander in the service of the Royal Navy. He fought in the Second World War. He was invested as a Officer, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem (O.St.J.). He lived in 2003 at Pitteadie House, Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland.

From Royal Victoria Hospital Netley web site His grandson Alan, sent information The little I know is that he was in the West Yorkshire Regiment which I believe had the horse on their cap badge and he was in the Somme...He was shot in the trenches by one of his own fellow soldiers who was a new recruit apparently cleaning his rifle at the time..He was shipped back to Netley where he apparently spent 4 years getting better after having his leg amputated...His nurse married him and I think her maiden name was Dennis a family who hailed from Southampton she had a brother called Walter and

another who I do not have a name for lost on the Titanic but not on passenger list that I can see....Poor woman had eight children and died at age of 34 years giving birth to youngest child...My Grandfather died in 1968 in a Norwich hospital after a long illness I was 17 years old then but obviously wish I could talk to him now I am older and wiser!!..They lived together in Brewery Road, Trunch, North Norfolk.After some research, I found that William married his nurse Beatrice Dennes who came from Swaythling. Also, she had an uncle Frederick Benham who is maybe the man who went down on the Titanic.Photo of Beatrice, believed to have been taken at Netley.- on web siteIn Arthur Amis’ book he says that his family had to move house so that Mr & Mrs Cutting could be nearer to Mr Primrose, the farmer.

He was at Ypres and the Somme. " I was right in the thick of it. I just had a charmed life to keep going," Mr Dixon recalled.In the battle of Loos, he was reported missing, but a week after receiving the news, his family got a card from him saying he was all right. "We got cut off but we held out," he explained. There were 74 men in his over-strength platoon when they were trapped -"When they got to us there were 24 and a sergeant left. " He added.

After two years in the front line he transferred to the railway operating division of the Royal Engineers on the strength of the time he spent on the railways at Melton Constable as a youth. The war over, he returned to marry and move to the Crown in 1919.

Frederick Victor DIXON (1897-1985) volunteered for the army in 1915 by cycling to Cromer with Arthur Spurgeon (who was killed in action in 1918). Private G/12425 G/12425 12th. Middlesex

He was sent first to the Britannia Barracks in Norwich and then to Dover Castle with Bob Rivett, also from Trunch. After 6 months training he was sent on a troop ship to France. After a week he was “sent up the line” to the front where he was in a Lewis Gun Section. The first night in the trenches was the worst he could remember as there was running water everywhere and on coming out after just one day and one night many of the men had trench foot, including Bob Rivett, who was sent home to Trunch for the rest of the war. Fred and others were given whale oil to rub into their feet. He then recalls several times on the front line interspersed with times further back and spells of rest. On one engagement he was injured by shrapnel and was sent to a hospital in Chester before being sent back again to France. Eventually he ended up in a former hunting chateau that was housing officers and he helped in the kitchen and with the horses - that was the best time! At last he returned home to Trunch.

Arthur Frederick FLAXMAN was Private 5774971, 5th. Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment and he died on January 19th. 1943 aged 21. He was the son of John Dennis and Elizabeth Christmas Flaxman. He is buried in the Chungkai war cemetery (12.E.14), north west of Bangkok. He died as a Prisoner of War of the Japanese and was working on the Burma to Siam railway. There is a memorial plaque for him inside the Church. 13th.1915 at sea near Turkey aged 24. A victim of the sinking of the ship, “The Royal Edward”. Both joined the 3rd Norfolks and volunteered for active service with the 1st Essex who went out in the troopship. Private Flaxman, 24, has 2 other brothers in the army. Private Fuller was 26. Memorial service held. The Grenville Lodge of Oddfellows, of which both young soldiers were members, was represented by the secretary, A Turner. Among others were former employers of the 2 young men. Norfolks 3/7837 PrivateFred Dixon said - volunteered for the army in 1915 by cycling to Cromer with Arthur Spurgeon (who was killed in action in 1918).He was sent first to the Britannia Barracks in Norwich and then to Dover Castle with Bob Rivett, also from Trunch. After 6 months training he was sent on a troop ship to France. After a week he was “sent up the line” to the front where he was in a Lewis Gun Section. The first night in the trenches was the worst he could remember as there was running water everywhere and on coming out after just one day and one night many of the men had trench foot, including Bob Rivett, who was sent home to Trunch for the rest of the war.

Arthur C (Callum) SPURGEON Born in Trunch about 1895. He was the son of John and Catherine and had 1 brother and 4 sisters. They lived at the Butchery on the Hill and he was an assistant butcher. Date 1827-1838 Description From Lazaretto, Malta, to his mother, Mrs Stransham of Trunch, describing wreck of the frigate 'Cambrian' off the island of Carabusa, Candia, and to his sister Mary Fransham, about his health and the possibility of getting leave, 15 and 20 Feb 1827; from 'Calliope', Buenos Aires, to Mrs Cole, forwarded to Mrs Stransham, giving account of voyage to St Catherine's, the town where he slept on a table to escape the myriads of fleas, ball costumes, Montevideo, Buenos Aires, the countryside, etc., 27 Aug 1838 Stransham was the son of Lt. Col. Anthony Stransham of the Royal Marines and grandson of Major Samuel Stransham of the Royal Marines, who planted the British flag on the Falkland Islands, claiming it for King George III.Stransham entered the Royal Marines on 1 January 1823. Four years after entering the service, he was present as a Subaltern at the Battle of Navarino on 20 October 1827. Stransham led the Royal Marines during the attack on the City of Canton in the First Opium War in 1841.He was wounded and was promoted to Captain He was awarded the Baltic Medal, having been with Charles John Napier in 1854. He was the son of Isaac and Ellen and lived in Bradfield Common with 6 siblings, - George, Rebecca, Gladys, Alice, Joshua, and Sydney. George married under the name of Worts to Mary Ann Wiseman and registered William as Watts because he could not read or write. William first married Jane Minnie Brackenbury and when she died, he was remarried to Annie Elizabeth Chamberlin. They had four children, Fred, Victor, Stanley born 1921(Lorraine Watts husband's father) and Miriam. William was a much older father, having no children from his first marriage he suddenly produced four children, he had a tragic death in 1930, helping to fell a tree at White House Farm in Knapton, a bough of the tree had a direct hit to his head killing him instantly, the Coroner said it was a chance in a Million. William was a staunch Methodist and a lay preacher and was one of the founders of the Chapel in Knapton that has since closed, his name is on a brass plaque inside the chapel.
