ALPHABET PRACTICE Read each letter out loud. Then, tell your tutor which sound each letter makes.

Ask students to tell you the name of each letter, then tell you the sound. Make sure the students remember both the long and short vowel sounds.

VOWELS & CONSONANTS In English, letters are divided into two groups: Vowels and Consonants.

Aa Bb Cc Dd Ee Ff Gg Hh Ii

Jj Kk Ll Mm Nn Oo Pp Qq Rr

Ss Tt Uu Vv Ww Xx Yy Zz

Vowels:

Aa, Ee, Ii, Oo, Uu, (Yy), (Ww)

PHONICS Vowels are divided into short and long sounds.

Phonics Lesson

Short Vowel Long Vowel

car care

men mean

not note

cut cute

A word has a long vowel sound when:

- it’s spelled with two vowels together (mean,

see, tea)

- when the word has a V-C-V pattern (fine, ate,

area)

A word has a short vowel sound when:

- it has the pattern C-V-C (fan, nap, pan)

- the vowel is followed by two or more

consonants (little, better, matter)

Say each pair together (car / care ), then have the student repeat. Explain the vowel sounds, then have students tell you which pattern is used in each word in the list. NOTE: Don’t worry about students saying things perfectly. If you can hear a clear difference, it’s fine.

SOMETIMES “Y” & “W” “Y” and “W” sometimes act as vowels.

Phonics Lesson

Y and W often act as vowels when:

- they come after another vowel (crow, play,

shown)

- when they’re at the end of a word (fly, try,
