Question 1) In your mind, what was the teamsbest accomplishment this season?

Answer: Probably making the Diamond Classic.Thats an elite tournament, so getting in with thoseteams, thats a pretty big accomplishment to me.

    2) What about your biggest disappointment?

A: The (first round) playoff loss to Atlantic City. Webeat them twice (in the regular season) and to justcome out and lose to them like that, thats hard.

    3) What are you going to miss most aboutplaying baseball at Vineland?

A: Just the guys. Its fun to come out here with them,

just have fun at practice, messing around with eachother. Im going to miss doing stuff like this.

Besides having one of the coolest names amongarea players, Vineland High School pitcher andinfielder Don Money can also play a little base-ball. The senior was a crucial part of the FightingClans return to prominence this season, partic-ularly on the mound. Money recently took timeout to talk to The Daily Journal about the break-out campaign, his best VHS memories and more:

    4) Which was your favorite team to playagainst?

A: Its probably Sacred Heart. Were in the same city, theres always trash talking and everything, its justgood to win.

    5) What are your college plans?

A: Im going to play baseball at Cumberland (CountyCollege). They had a great year this year. They won30 games, they made the playoffs, so Im lookingforward to it.

    6) You were a standout defender for the soccerteam. Do you prefer baseball or soccer?

A: Soccer was great, it was just as fun as baseball, but baseball tops it just a little bit more. Its a familything, so that overcomes soccer.

    7) What is your favorite hobby outside ofsports?

A: Actually just chilling at my house, having friendscome over, just having a good time. Go swimmingduring the summer, stuff like that.

    8) Where is your favorite place to eat and whatdo you like the best there?

A: I like Applebees. I kinda get the same thing allthe time, the chicken fingers. But the appetizers Ilike to change up a little bit. They have these softpretzels and I like the mozzarella sticks, and a coupleother things.

    9) Do you have a favorite movie?

A: I dont know, theres a lot of good movies. I guessmy favorite are the Fast and Furious movies. Im intothose.

    STARTING NINE

Maybe it was fate that caused two postpone-ments of the final City Series rivalry gamebetween the Vineland and Sacred Heart highschool baseball teams, leaving the always

heated battle as the last contest of the season forboth programs.

The Fighting Clan and Lions hoped to still be play-ing in their respective state tournaments come June, but that wasnt the case.

Instead, the two sides squared off one final timeFriday with Sacred Hearts doors set to close forgood later this month. And like it has every timebefore, the game carried weight equal to that of achampionship clash. In the end, it was Vineland thatsecured its third straight victory in the series with a6-2 triumph over host Sacred Heart under the lightsat Morie Field.

The majority of players are friends, former team-mates and in some cases neighbors. Both of SacredHearts coaches, front man Tom Ryder and assistantTim Jess, work at Vineland High School and wereformer head coaches for the Fighting Clan. As theteams prepared for Fridays much-anticipated show-down, losing was not an option.

We have to come out and play hard, and play the best game weve got, Sa-cred Heart senior captain Theo Mercuriosaid following his teams 3-0 loss to Moor-estown Friends in Thursdays Non-PublicB South quarterfinals. Thats all we canask for from everybody, play hard andgo for the win. Leave nothing else outthere, its the last game for the schoolshistory.

Summers can be pretty long for theloser of the annual City Series game.

Just ask the Fighting Clans Don Mon-ey or Lions Kevin Allen. The two seniorsare neighbors on Old Forest Road andknow firsthand the trash talking that canensue following the contests conclusion.

Bragging rights against him, thatsthe best because I get all summer andthe whole next year until we play again,Money said of joking on Allen. Thistime, if we win, I can do it forever. Withboth teams out of the playoffs, this is allthe seniors have left, so it means a lot.

Allen echoed Moneys thoughts. Its always a huge game, Allen said.

You have to come out and hustle, and

show a lot of heart. Theres a lot ridingon the game and we have to play liketheres nothing to lose.

The two teams had traveled muchdifferent paths leading into Friday.Vineland, which qualified for the pres-tigious Diamond Classic this year, entered the game 20-7 while SacredHeart won just five regular seasongames, but did something the Clancould not win a playoff contest.

While the Fighting Clan are sad to

see the rivalry come to a close, theteam had no intentions of feeling sorryfor Sacred Heart on the field.

Theres been a lot of chitchat goingon, Vineland senior Mark Rowan said.We want to win, were coming offthree losses, this is a big game for usand were not going to play down toanybody.

For Sacred Heart, there would havebeen no greater prize than knockingoff Vineland.

Its the biggest game we play ev-ery year, Lions senior Chris Repicesaid.
