Volume 5, Issue 48 www.barrelracingreport.com November 29, 2011 B ARREL R ACING REPORT REPORT - Fast Horses, Fast News since 2007 - The days are getting shorter, the temperatures are dropping off, everyone has had some turkey and started their Christmas shopping, that can mean only one thing for the avid rodeo barrel racing fan, it’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) time! With the regular season ending September 30, we’ve had two months of down time. Now, it is time to decide the champion of perhaps the toughest eld of barrel racers ever assembled at the WNFR. Many of you may still be guring out that last minute Fantasy team so let’s rundown all the competitors. This years top three competitors, #1 Brit- tany Pozzi, #2 Lindsay Sears, and #3 Sherry Cervi, also happen to be the last 3 World Champions. To add to the excitement, they are all on the horses they won those world championships on. Sherry Cervi and her mount Mp Meter My Hay won the world last year while set- ting an arena record. In 2009, the pair not only won the average but set the record for most money ever won at the WNFR for a barrel racer, earning $146,100. Plus, the pair set the arena record of 13.49 there last year! Cervi and Mp Meter My Hay lit up a jackpot in Arizona over the weekend so it is more than likely they are ready to put the sting on the competition in Vegas. Brittany Pozzi and Yeah Hes Firen lead the world going into the Finals. The pair chose their rodeos carefully over the year and come into Vegas well rested. Yeah Hes Fire has already shown his liking for the Thomas & Mack helping Pozzi win $123,570 at the 2009 WNFR boosting her to her second world title. This team has won at rodeos on all sizes of patterns over the last 3 years and Pozzi knows just the right buttons to push on this big palomino gelding to get a fast run when she needs it. Let us not forget a sorrel mare affectionately known as Martha (Sugar Moon Express) that has carried her 2008 World Champion rider Lindsay Sears to more than $1.5 million in earnings. Sears and Martha sit in the #2 position even though Sears didn’t get Martha back until June. Plus Martha has history in Vegas, she is pretty much a sure thing to place in the rounds out there if she is on her game. Mar- tha has been on a break for a while so she may need a little warming up but if history repeats itself Sears won’t take long to nd her way into the winner circle. Although the top 3 competitors are formidable enough, this is a deep eld of competitors. It sure looks like the barrel breeding programs are making a big difference on the level of competition. So, let’s take a quick look at all 15! #4 Brenda Mays is riding her great horse Jethro (Judge Buy Cash). Previous to a late season injury the team was dominating all season long. This pair has been to the NFR from 2007-2011 so they have the experience plus they have had their best year yet coming in. If Jethro is 100% they should have a great 10 days. #5 Carlee Pierce may not have been well known before this year but her top horse sure is, in the spring she bought Rare Dillion and the duo have been on a tear all year long. Dillon has experience at the WNFR with previous owner, Annesa Self and is tough in nearly every setup. Plus, her back up horse Blue Moon Fling (BB) just set an arena record on a 13 second pattern at the Texas Stampede.Be ready for Carlee and her team to make some noise. #6 Lisa Lockhart and her mount An Oakie With Cash (Louie) won enough over the indoor winter rodeos to take it easy through the rest of the year. The pair lit up last year’s WNFR winning $107,426 in Vegas and they just won over $55k at the Canadian Finals Rodeo. It’s safe to say they are ring on all cylinders and ready to roll. #7 Sue Smith and Real Claim To Fame are a team that can win in every arena. In fact, at the end of this year, the pair won the Justin Boots Championship in Omaha on a small pat- tern. After winning their fair share at the 2009 WNFR, Smith and Claimer will use that experi- ence and could be a dark horse team to sneak up the standings. #8 Jody Shefeld and Skip The Finances used a big win at Rodeo Houston to vault themselves into the WNFR and then rodeoed close to home for the remainder of the year. This team looks to be well rested and have already proven they can run with the best. Don’t count the rookie team out, they’ve got all the stuff to win some big checks. #9 Angie Meadors comes to this years WNFR with quite a crew of horses. She has Heza Bug Leo, a horse that has won money at nearly every futurity and derby in the country and is seasoned at running indoors. She also brings to the table, Mulberry Canyon Moon, who Meadors won 3 rounds at the WNFR with last year, and Frenchmans Jester who is also a WNFR round winner with previous owner Jordon (Peterson) Briggs. It’s anybodys guess which horse she’ll be on when she cracks through the alley of the Thomas and Mack, any of the three are good enough to win a bunch this week. #10 Jeanne Anderson and her great horse Flaming Firebug are one of the most consistent teams around and after their rst WNFR last year they should be primed and ready to win big this year. 2011 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo Preview 2011 WNFR Continued on Page 3 t u 2011 WNFR BARREL RACING CONTESTANTS 1 Brittany Pozzi $115,272.86 2 Lindsay Sears $105,306.45 3 Sherry Cervi $90,520.50 4 Brenda Mays $87,960.82 5 Carlee Pierce $85,504.71 6 Lisa Lockhart $80,671.38 7 Sue Smith $79,751.90 8 Jody Shefeld $68,313.83 9 Angie Meadors $66,594.30 10 Jeanne Anderson $64,299.53 11 Jane Melby $63,282.57 12 Britany Fleck $63,119.90 13 Christina Richman $61,714.02 14 Jill Moody $61,420.89 15 Tammy Fischer $60,589.40

#11 Jane Melby and her horse RC Back In Black make a heck of a team. Melby was only able to ride Beauty in just the handful of rodeos and they made this year’s, their fi rst, WNFR. Beauty is coming back from some slight foot issues but should be ready to roll. Melby is a native Minnesotan so running a small pattern in a barn is defi -nitely something she is used to! #12 Britany Fleck and her mount Dasher Dude may be ones to keep on the radar. This team won big through the winter winning San Antonio and then in the middle of the big summer run, an injury kept Fleck from riding Dasher Dude. At the end of the season a couple big checks on the small pattern at Omaha got them into the top 15, so the pattern should fi t this pair well. #13 Christina Richman and Xtrared (Stitch) used a spring run to vault themselves into the top 15. Richman and her mount Stitch had such a great spring run, they got to stay close to home and pick their rodeos. This pair placed in 3 rounds and the average at their fi rst WNFR last year and were really close to placing in several others The experience may put this team in position to move up fast at this year’s NFR. Stitch has a reputation of consistency and should be a con-tender for some of the average money! #14 Jill Moody, 2010 WNFR Average Champion and Reserve World Champion, is coming into this years WNFR without her great mare Tr Dashing Badger (Dolly). Moody will start the week on Cha-sin Firewater, a stud owned by JB Quarter Horses. Chasin Firewater recently won Main Race 1 at the Elite Extravaganza in Waco, TX with Kassie Mowry aboard. Moody is bringing 3 horses along, Chasin Firewater, Moss Me Moe and GS Doco Daisy. It’ll be exciting to see how this veteran does with her new team of horses. #15 Tammy Fischer and her trusty mount, 16 year old Easy Dash Oak (Roundpen) are making their 6th WNFR appearance. You know it’s a tough fi eld of competitors when the team in the 15th hole are former WNFR arena record holders and have won 5 out of 10

rounds at the 2002 WNFR. Roundpen and Fischer won a race at the D&G-Whichita Falls over the weekend so they are ready to roll. You’ll know she’s going for it when you see Fischer using her over and under all the way to the fi rst barrel at the Thomas & Mack. This deep fi eld of contestants will be running at the most money ever offered with $17,884 being awarded each night to the round winner and the average winner taking home a whopping $45,865. With those kind of payouts and all 15 competitors being within $55k of each other, the world championship will come down to the hottest horse and rider team in the Thomas & Mack from Dec. 1-10. Well, the toughest fi eld of competitors and the toughest fi eld of horses ever compiled are ready to hit the Thomas & Mack in a few short days. Are you ready? Make sure you have added Great Ameri-can Country (GAC) to your cable or satellite programming (Channel 167 on Dish Network and Channel 326 on DirectTV) and have your TV on December 1 at 10 pm Eastern (7pm Pacifi c) to catch all the action. As Terrell Owens famously said, “Get your popcorn ready!”

BRR: Which horse(s) are you taking with to the fi nals?Sears: Sugar Moon Express, Ima Guy Of Honor & DJ Nick BarBRR: History of the horse(s) that you’ll be running at the WNFR?Sears: I bought Martha in January of 2006, she was just turning 6 and was very green, she had only been to probably a 10 events or so. At that point she hadn’t won much and went to the right. In the fall of 2006 through the winter of 2007 I retrained her to go the left. I did however manage to make it to the 2006 NFR on her from just her winnings over that summer at all the big outdoor rodeos, but she had abscessed before the NFR and wasn’t solid at indoor rodeos either so I rode DJ Nick Bar (borrowed from Courtney Cantrell) and Hanky Flit Panky. The spring of 2007 I started competing on her going to the left and since I trained her to the left I made her into my style a little more and we really kind of gelled together and she developed into a great one. From then on we have been winning. She carried me to a World Championship in 2008, Reserve in 2007 and 2009 and third in 2010. She has about $1.5 million in career earnings. In her career, 35 rodeos in a year is the most rodeos she has been to. I bought Mo when he was a 6 year old and I have been seasoning him since then. I won Jackson, MS and won several other smaller

rodeos and have won rounds on him at Red Bluff, Houston and Calgary, Pendleton. I have won about $80k this year on him while Martha was hurt and as a backup horse and in his lifetime he has about $150,000 in earnings.BRR: What was the high point of your 2011 season? Sears: Probably most exciting thing, was to get back on Martha, that was defi nitely the highlight of my year. I didn’t think I was ever going to be able to compete on her again so it was pretty exciting to be able to run her again. (Martha suffered a severe stifl e injury at 2010 NFR and was out of competition until the Reno Rodeo in June)BRR: What tip would you give the average competitor wanting to raise their level of competition? Sears: I think the biggest thing is instead of making excuses as to why you are not doing well, take a look around you and learn from someone. Also, you can never work hard enough and success usually follows hard work.BRR: If you could ride any other horse other than your own at the NFR, what other 2011 NFR horse would you ride?Sears: I would probably ride Jethro and Dolly. Jethro (Judge Buy Cash) because he is a real free runner and that is my kind of horse, you don’t have to push him by the barrel and he is big and strong. Dolly (Tr Dashing Badger) because she is a gritty little mare that tries hard, I have always admired that mare.Sponsors & Thank Yous: I would like to thank my family and my veterinarians, Bo and Warren, for doing an awesome job of bringing Martha back and keeping all my horses sound throughout the year. I would also like to thank Lee for taking care of Martha’s feet. My sponsors are: Morinda Care, Panhandle Slim (Rock & Roll Cowgirl), Shiloh Saddlery, Wade Saddle Pads, MGM Grand

BARREL RACING REPORT NOVEMBER 29, 2011 PAGE 8

Cervi: My family raised MP Meter My Hay, she is out a 3/4 sister to Hawk. Colter Todd broke her to ride, then Mom (Wendy Pot-ter) rode her for a little bit. Then when she was 4 she went to Ryan (Lovendahl), he rode her for about 5 months. After that I rode her for a couple months and then sent her back to Ryan for her 5 year old year. I used her in 2008 as a backup horse to TinMan and didn’t make the fi nals that year. I really started using her quite bit in 2009. I ended up 3rd in the World that year and won the most money of any of the events at the 2009 WNFR ($146,000). We also won the average that year. In 2010, we were the WPRA Barrel Racing World Champions. She has a little over $600k in lifetime earnings so far. We raised MP A Man With Roses as well. He is out of an 7/8 sister to Troubles (Sir Double Delight). He pretty much went through the same program as Stingray. When I got him back in the fall from Ryan we then won the Greg Olson as a 5 year old. I hauled him around the rest of the year and took him to jackpots. I took him to a few rodeos at 6. This last year he ran a 16.6 (16.646, on of the fastest times ever on a standard pattern) on a standard pattern at the Pac West Barrel Race. He is getting close to $100k in lifetime earnings.

BRR: What was the high point of your 2011 season? Cervi: I had a really good Fourth of July, that always really helps, but it also allowed me to go to the Great Lakes Circuit and go to rodeos with my Dad. That was very special to me. BRR: What tip would you give the average competitor wanting to raise their level of competition? Cervi: Don’t every lose sight of your goals no matter the challenges that you face. The challenges will come but just don’t ever lose sight of what you want.BRR: If you could ride any other horse other than your own at the NFR, what other 2011 NFR horse would you ride?Cervi: There is 15 awesome horses there. It would be an honor to ride any of them. I always thought it would be a lot fun to put all the horses names in a hat and draw a name and run it!Sponsors & Thank Yous: I would like to thank all the friends and family that help throughout the year; I couldn’t do this without them. My sponsors are Justin, Classic Equine, Martin Saddlery, Toyota, Resistol Hats, Western Hauler, Biovigor, Renew Gold, HayGain

By Tanya Randall Former NBHA Open World Champion Sarah McDonald and her fancy, 5-year-old roan mare Fame Fling And Bling gobbled up the cash at the 9th Annual Fiddler’s Turkey Run, held Nov. 24-27 at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center in Florida. McDonald added $5,360 to her bank account in Brunswick, Ga. “Any time she can give me three clean runs, I’m happy,” said the 19-year-old sophomore at the College of Coastal Georgia. “She’s the most athletic horse I’ve had.” On their opening run of the weekend, they clocked a 15.281, which was good enough for a third-place check of $693 in the $2,000-added Open. “She had pretty good turns, but didn’t run as hard as she could,” said McDonald. “The alley setup was really hard for me because she’s a left-handed horse. I thought she handled it pretty well.”Although Bling didn’t run as well in the Pumpkin Pie slot race as McDonald thought she would, she was happy to come out with another clean run. Runner-up for the WPRA Rookie-of-the-Year Kaley Bass won the Pumpkin Pie race in a time of 15.127, worth $2,100, aboard Wonders Cowboy Dan. For her run in Saturday’s $5,000-added Open, McDonald said she got Bling a little more excited in the alley. The result was a winning time of 15.044, worth $2,044. “She ran really hard and turned her barrels super close,” she said. “That was my best fi rst barrel of the weekend.” In the $5,000-added Open on Sunday, McDonald and Bling were one of only three runners in the 1D. Nicole Ferrell and her comeback kid, Its Gods Call, blew everyone away with a 14.733, the fastest time of the entire event. McDonald and Bling were second with a 15.174, worth $2,633. “There were only three in the 1D and I was happy she got in there,” said McDonald, who will soon enter nursing school. “She

went past the fi rst barrel a little bit, but her third barrel was really good. I think that’s where I made up my time.” Bling, a daughter of rising star sire A Streak Of Fling out of the Dash Ta Fame, Sold Sort mare Short Penny, is owned by McDon-ald’s uncle Stephen McDonald and Larry Ammons. McDonald’s uncle trained Bling and she started running the mare as a 4-year-old.“I fi nished her, taking her to little weekend shows,” said McDon-ald. “She was very hyper and always jumpy. turned on and she won one of the little shows and she’s been win-ning ever since.” McDonald and Bling suffered a setback the fi rst weekend of Oc-tober at the Georgia NBHA State Show, when Bling fell and injured her stifl e. A brief layoff allowed her to return to competition at the NBHA World Show. With Bling’s impeccable pedigree and exemplary performance record, her second career as a broodmare, via embryo transfer, is something that her owners have begun to mull over, but they aren’t yet certain how they will travel that potential path. In the arena, however, McDonald plans to continue her winning ways with Bling.“This is my last year to be in the youth,” she said. “I won the All American this year, but I want to win the NBHA Youth World. I’ve been reserve twice, but never won it.” Mindful of her young mount, McDonald also said she plans to give Bling some breaks during the year.“I want to keep having consistent clean runs,” she said, “and I want to keep her sound. She’s just 5, so I think it’s important for her to have some breaks.”

Headin’ For HomeHeadin’ For Home by Sherry Morrison by Sherry Morrison Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries) Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries)

Good News! Good news can be different for you and me, or in different situations in our lives. For example, when we moved into our home 27 years ago, the barn on the prop-

erty was overrun with mice! Everybody say eeeuuuwww together! We needed cats. So, we found two barn cats and it wasn’t long and the mouse problem was fi nally under control. Those cats were good news! But, over the years the cat population here has, well, fl our-ished. They are no longer good news. And they are not pets. They are WILD! But, we have no mice. Mike has decided we need to start doing something about all those cats. (Anybody out there up for adopting one...or two??0 Enter our darling grandson. He came over the other day to visit and spied this white kitten that was sooo cute. He was so excited! Could we PLEASE try to catch it and tame it? Grandma’s are easy. Off we go on a kitten hunt. We looked high and low, in and out of the barn, under wood, behind the garage, on and on forever. Until. We heard meowing in the fi eld. So, we sneak out there and sure enough there was that white kitten! Cody put on my gloves and grabbed that kitten! He was sooo excited and couldn’t wait to show

Papa Mike. I wish you could have seen Mike’s face when Cody burst through the door and yelled, “GOOD NEWS Papa Mike, I caught the kitten!” But I do know of Good News that is the same for us all...the gospel of Jesus Christ. That He came, He died, He rose again and now sits at the right hand of the Father ever living to make inter-cession for you and me. That He loves us, He bore stripes for our healing, He wants us prosperous and in peace. May you always have the Good News of Jesus in your life! We hope you had a very Happy Thanksgiving. We set ourselves in agreement with your for the power of God’s promise to IN-CREASE in all you are doing. We want to see you prosper and know the goodness of God in your life.
