Thank you for your interest in Barr’s Hill School and Community College. Our relatively small school with its unique caring ethos and dedicated staff is committed to ensuring that students achieve

the highest possible standards.

There are many good reasons for you to return to Barr’s Hill for your sixth form studies:

• Our classes are small and you get more personal individual attention.

• Our examination results at Post 16 are very strong. We have very good teachers and we continually try to improve the quality of our examination passes. We also offer a variety of courses at different levels and will listen to requests for new courses.

• We give excellent tutorial and careers advice and support.

• We give you encouragement and opportunities to mature so that you can make informed decisions about your future.

• We value each one of you, regardless of what course or the level at which you take it.

The school’s designation as a Specialist Engineering College has accelerated developments across all subject areas. We are developing world class facilities and resources for ICT, sports, creative arts and other areas such as photography.

As our senior students and young adults you will help shape the school’s future and will act as role models for younger members of the school community. We will treat you with respect and provide opportunities for you to fully participate in the life of the school alongside staff and younger pupils. You should make the most of the opportunities ahead of you and aim to achieve your best both academically and socially. This is a time for self discovery when you stake your claim as to what you want to be. These next few years are the start for you to claim your place in the wider community.

You have much to look forward to and an exciting journey ahead. We look forward to sharing that journey with you. Mr Hope, staff and sixth form students will be happy to talk to you about your choices.

We look forward to seeing you at Barr’s Hill next year.

general information1. What Happens in the Sixth Form?Students returning to school after Year 11 return by choice to further their education for one or more years.

All students will be offered careers guidance, help with study skills and action planning—all very necessary ingredients for successful learning and employment! Students will also be expected to follow work aimed at increasing confidence and skills for further study and training.

For those who have done well in GCSE and are interested in A-levels and/or Advanced Applied qualifications we offer a range of one/two year courses. If a student wishes to go on to higher education at university to study at degree level, passes in A-level subjects are the traditional access route. The majority of students doing A-levels follow courses in three subjects, though it is possible to do as few as two or as many as four or five, depending on your GCSE results. Advanced Applied courses can also be included in this.

Students who wish to improve their Year 11 grades in GCSE Maths, English and Science will have the opportunity to do so.

Some courses may not be available at Barr’s Hill, but if we offer the majority of subjects you would like to do, and you wish to remain here, we can make arrangements for you to attend another Sixth Form or College just to take that subject we do not offer. We will even help with transport from one institution to another.

It is possible for some students to attend College and Barr’s Hill. We have developed strong links with the local Colleges and will support students in this enterprise. If students intend to attend Barr’s Hill and College they must inform Mr Hope as soon as possible.

An adult approach to your learning will involve a more flexible day, with the opportunity of joining some adult education classes if you wish, in the evening. All students who apply to the Sixth Form must be able to demonstrate good punctuality, attendance and a positive attitude to hard work. You will be expected to contribute to school life; for example our students support departments and work with younger students.

For Advanced Study you must have:• 5 GCSE grade A-C or equivalent in different subjects.

Please note:• BTEC 1st Certificate counts as one GCSE and this

should be a Merit.• COPE/Wider Key Skills/ALAN are not included for

Level 3 courses.

Individual cases can be considered on individual merit for students not meeting the qualifying standard. In these cases a tailored programme, with a mix of Level 2 and 3 courses could be provided to meet the needs of the student. This programme will be determined in discussion with the student, subject teachers and Mr Hope.

For the Level 2 Programme of Study you must have:• A profile showing a range of qualifications at Level 1 or 2.• A willingness to work hard.

In the Sixth Form you’re at school because you want to be. The opportunities are all around you, whatever your interest, whatever your ability. It’s not criminal to improve your education and to try your best. The crime is to never bother trying.

2. Tutorial Organisation and GuidanceWe believe that Sixth Form students have an entitlement to the best possible advice and guidance about further education and work opportunities that may be available to them. Each student gets tutor group pastoral support to monitor academic and personal progress.

3. Monitoring Progress and AchievementStudents and parents alike have the right to up-to-date information about progress in the Sixth Form. It is important that we in school do everything we can to make realistic assessments of progress and likely levels of achievement. We certainly don’t think it is a good thing to disguise problems or difficulties, to pretend things are satisfactory when they’re not – nor for students and parents to discover this only when results are published.

tutors and discuss progress. However, parents are free to contact us at school whenever they have any concerns about progress or just wish to get an up-to-date picture of how their son/daughter is coping. The best person to contact in the first instance is usually the student’s form tutor who will direct parents to subject teachers if necessary.

Within the careers and higher education guidance programme, relevant work experience forms an important component. And in terms of up-to-date higher education information, we are now using state of the art information technology to help students find information about courses, subjects and grade requirements at the press of a key.

16-19 Bursary Fund

From March 2011 the Government announced a new 16-19 Bursary Fund to support the most vulnerable young people to participate in Post 16 education and training. This new scheme replaces the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA). The purpose of the 16-19 Bursary Fund is to support young people aged 16-19 in full time education who face financial barriers to participation such as cost of transport, food or equipment. It is made up of two parts, a bursary of £1,200 a year to the most vulnerable young people and a discretionary fund for schools and colleges to distribute.

Students who are currently in receipt of Free School Meals and therefore living in a household with an income below £16,190 can apply for some assistance through the 16-19 Bursary Fund. Any amount received will however be dependent on the number of students eligible for assistance and therefore cannot be guaranteed.

National Scholarship Programme

These Scholarships are targeted at well qualified applicants and are awarded competititives on the basis of various criteria. The total value of a Scholarship is worth £3,000 for each year of the degree provided each year is passed.

EnrichmentSixth Form life also presents many opportunities to extend, enrich and enjoy a range of activities outside of the curriculum. A large number of students get involved in a wide range of activities including horse-riding, fencing, cooking, DIY, pistol shooting, high ropes, and many more! Included in this is an opportunity to gain various qualifications such as employability skills. Also offered on the varied programme are a number of sporting activities and the chance to represent the Sixth Form in high profile competitions such as the Coventry Festival of Speech and Drama and the National Political Question Time.

The enrichment programme encourages students to find opportunity to gain experience in other environments.

An additional studies programme is delivered by your tutor, perhaps the member of staff who will get to know you best. These sessions are delivered in a variety of ways including small group work, personal reflection and times when you join together as a year group. Sessions include sexual health, driving safely, and preparation for life beyond Barr’s Hill Sixth Form with assistance writing CV’s, university applications and career advice. Many students will also sign up for work experience or an ‘Insight Programme’ lasting a few hours each week for a whole year, a term or just a few weeks. Whatever the choice of the student, the enrichment programme is vital to the success of our students and gives them an opportunity to take their learning further in something that will help them develop as young adults.

The enrichment programme gives students opportunities to show leadership and to make a real difference in our community and further afield.

and finally…

Being in the Sixth Form is not only about studying hard. Sixth Form education with its emphasis on only a few subjects can be very narrow, therefore students are expected to participate in other activities. For example, many become involved with a community service programme. This involves helping others either at school, for example in the Special Needs Department, where extra help is always

gratefully received, or in another institution of your choice. In addition, over the past couple of years we have established a tradition of raising money for charity and the charity effort usually takes place at the end of the Autumn Term. You will have every chance to take on responsibility and show initiative.

As one of the most senior students in the school, you will play a leading role in helping shape the school community. Our Post 16 initiatives have been recognised within the West

Midlands and further afield as excellent. Such initiatives include Numeracy/Literacy Ambassadors, Election Committee and student voice.

Remember, when it comes to applying for jobs or a place in higher education, you will be judged not just on the basis of your studies, but also on your personal qualities.

Being in the Sixth Form gives you the scope to develop personally. Time in the Sixth Form will mean hard work but there is a great opportunity for you to develop as a mature person equipped to go to the next stage of what we hope will be an exciting and challenging life.

If you have any queries do not hesitate to contact me.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Mr Hope, Head of Sixth Form
