We’re really pleased with the opening week of the season and we have played two teams who were in League Two last season so they were a bit of an unknown quantity.

I was pleased with the performance at Sutton, we just needed that little bit more quality in front of goal in the second half. Nonetheless it has been a really good first week of the season and we are really happy with how it has gone. There is a real togetherness at the Club at the moment and I will keep driving this because we all have a role to play. Everyone deserves credit for the togetherness at the minute because I do feel like we all in this together. It has sometimes been a difficult situation to drive but it was one of my priorities when I first took the job that I wanted everyone together and slowly but surely we have got there. We need to stay together for the rest of the season. The reaction to going one goal down, was really pleasing, we didn’t look flustered, we remained calm and we were really brave in possession. We fed our way back into the game on a set piece, something that Junior has been working on with the players and I thought we looked a real threat from set pieces on Saturday. All I asked at half time was a little more quality from our front four and I think we saw that in the second half, they were a threat in the final third and it was a really good team goal that secured the winner.

I welcome Andy Hessenthaler and his side to The Hive this evening, Hess is obviously former Barnet himself, he had a great career as a player and I’m sure he will as a manager as well. His team will be hard working and determined, they have started the season positively just like we have, it’s going to be a good game between two teams in good form, I am really looking forward to the game. As always it is a big thank you for all the support this season so far! It is always a nice feeling as a manager when the supporters applaud you and your clapping them back.

It tells me we have had a successful day and we are all in business for one thing – and

that is to win!

Enjoy the match and#LetsBeeTogether

First week is done and we’re three games unbeaten which is always positive.

However tonight’s game with Dover will be a tough task, they have made a decent start to the season themselves. They scored a late winner on Saturday which will give them a lift coming into tonight’s game so we need to be ready. We will be right for the start of the game and we need to try to get another good result at home. It’s only the second week of the season so let’s not get carried away, we are only focused on getting a result tonight. We aren’t thinking about anything else, we just want to make sure that we are right and keep playing the way that we are playing at the moment because it has been a really decent start to the season. The support has been brilliant, we were very well backed at both Notts and Sutton, even on the opening day against Yeovil the support has been top draw. All the fans support for us means a lot, hopefully we can keep getting positive results, so we can have

even more wanting to come down to watch us. It was nice to finally get a goal for Barnet on Saturday and it’s great to be included in the National League team of the weekend too, long may it continue. However, Saturday is gone now and we have to concentrate on tonight’s game, we need to match the performance from Saturday if we want to get a good result tonight. We need to make The Hive a tough place to come to, we want teams to not like coming to our ground. However that all stems with how we are playing on the pitch, if we are hurting teams on the pitch then other sides won’t want to come here to play us.

Thanks for your continued support,

Come on you Bees!

Dover Athletic F.C. was formed in 1983 after the town’s previous club, Dover FC, folded due to its debts. The new club took Dover’s place in the Southern League Southern Division, with former Dover player Alan Jones as manager and a team consisting mainly of reserve players from the old club. Initially Athletic struggled, finishing second from bottom of the table in the 1984–85 season. In November 1985 Steve McRae, who had succeeded Jones a year earlier, was sacked and replaced by Chris Kinnear.

Under Kinnear the club’s fortunes turned round, with two top-five finishes followed by the Southern Division championship, and with it promotion, in the 1987–88 season. The team started strongly in the Premier Division, finishing in sixth place at the first attempt, and then winning the championship in the 1989–90 season. The club was denied promotion to the Football Conference, however, as the Crabble Athletic Ground did not meet the standard required for that league. After finishing fourth and second in the subsequent two seasons, Dover won the title again in the 1992–93 season and this time were admitted to the Conference.Although Dover finished in eighth place

in their first season in the Conference, the following season saw the club struggling against relegation, and Kinnear was replaced at the helm by John Ryan – but his reign was a short one and he was dismissed when the club lost seven of its first eight matches in the 1995–96 season.

The club then appointed former England international Peter Taylor as manager, but he was unable to steer the team away from the foot of the table, and Dover held onto their place in the Conference only because Northern Premier League runners-up Boston United failed to submit their application for promotion before the required deadline.

Bill Williams took over as manager in 1997 and proved to be Dover’s most successful Conference manager, leading the club to the FA Trophy semi-finals in the 1997–98 season and a best ever league finish of sixth place in the 1999–2000 season. Williams left the club to take a senior position with Conference rivals Kingstonian in May 2001. By now the club was in severe financial difficulties, with a number of directors resigning and debts exceeding £100,000. Amid the crisis the entire board of directors resigned, forcing the club’s Supporters’ Trust to take over the running of the club, and manager Gary Bellamy was sacked after just six months in the job.

Former Everton goalkeeper Neville Southall took over but was dismissed just three months later, with Clive Walker taking over in March 2002 with the club rooted to the foot of the table. The club finished the season bottom of the Conference and was relegated back to the Southern League Premier Division. The club’s ongoing financial problems led to it entering a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA), a process by which insolvent companies offset their debts against future profits, due to debts that were now estimated at £400,000.

In Dover’s first season back in the Southern League Premier Division the Whites finished in third place, albeit 17 points adrift of Tamworth, who claimed the one promotion place available that season. A poor start to the following season saw Walker replaced by Richard Langley. Dover finished the season in 19th place, before being switched to the Isthmian League Premier Division in the summer of 2004 following a re-organisation of the English football league system.

The new season started with six successive defeats, which saw Langley sacked, and the financial problems continued, with the club coming within two months of being closed down. Dover were relegated to the Isthmian League Division One at the end of the season, but were saved from possible extinction in January 2005 when former director Jim Parmenter returned to head up a consortium that took over the club. Parmenter quickly sacked manager Steve Browne and convinced Clive Walker to return to the club to replace him, and also arranged for the club’s outstanding CVA debts to be cleared, putting the club on a firm financial footing for the first time in many years.

Dover Athletic narrowly missed out on an immediate return to the Premier Division in the 2005–06 season, reaching the play-offs for promotion but losing out to Tonbridge Angels. The following season Dover again reached the play-offs but lost in the semi-final to Hastings United, after which Walker did not have his contract renewed and was replaced by former Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler.

In his first season in charge he led the club to the Division One South championship and promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division. The following season Dover won a second consecutive championship and thus gained promotion to Conference South.

In the 2009–10 season, Dover reached the play-offs for promotion to the Conference National, but lost at the semi-final stage to Woking.

The following season the club reached the third round

of the FA Cup for the first time after wins over Kent rivals Gillingham in the first round and another League Two club, Aldershot Town, in the second round. In the 2012–13 season the club again reached the play-offs, but this time lost in the final to Salisbury City.

The following season the team reached the second round of the FA Cup, losing 1–0 to Milton Keynes Dons, The last 16 of the FA Trophy, narrowly losing 3–2 to Eastleigh and made the play-offs once more. A 4–1 aggregate victory over Sutton United in the semi-final set up a match with fellow Kent team Ebbsfleet United in the final.

On 10 May 2014, Dover beat Ebbsfleet 1–0 at Stonebridge Road with a goal from Nathan Elder enough to seal the club’s return to the top flight of non-league football for the first time since 2002. In the 2014–15 season Dover went on another FA Cup run, beating Morecambe 1–0 in the first round, then Cheltenham Town 1–0 in the second round to reach the third round proper for only the second time ever, but lost 4–0 at home to Premier League side Crystal Palace. The side went on to finish in 8th place in their first season back in the top flight of non-league football.

The following season, Kinnear built on the good work done previously and guided the side to a 5th place finish in the Vanarama National League. The side faced Forest Green Rovers in the play-offs, losing 1-0 at home in the first leg before drawing 1-1 in Gloucestershire to suffer an undeserved exit from the play-offs.

Kinnear’s side finished 6th in the 2016/17 season but finished the year with some silverware, after beating Welling United FC 2-0 in the Kent Senior Cup Final.

Dover finished eighth last season, missing out of the play-offs on goal difference.

Chris Kinnear was replaced by Andy Hessenthaler in October 2018.

CRABBLE ATHLETIC GROUND

The Crabble Athletic Ground, also known as The Crabble or simply Crabble, is a football stadium located in the northern Dover suburb of River, Kent. It was the home of the various incarnations of Dover F.C. from 1931 until the club folded in 1983. Since then it has been the home of Dover Athletic F.C., and it was also the temporary home of Margate F.C. between 2002 and 2004, when the club’s Hartsdown Park stadium was being redeveloped. The stadium has two seated stands and two covered terraces and holds a total of 5,745 fans (including 1,010 seats and 3,642 covered terracing), although in the past, crowds larger than that figure could be accommodated. It also has a clubhouse, which the club completely redeveloped in 2008.

A sports ground was first established on the site at the end of the 19th century and was used for both cricket and football as well as for other sports. This ground was used by Kent County Cricket Club for over 100 first-class cricket matches between 1907 and 1976 and is now the home of Dover Rugby Union Club.

Dover Athletic’s home ground since the club’s foundation has been the Crabble Athletic Ground, which was also the home of the former Dover club. The word Crabble, which is also found in the name of a local corn mill, may derive from the Old English crabba hol, meaning a hole in which crabs are found. The stadium, commonly known simply as “Crabble” or, imprecisely, as “The Crabble”,forms part of a larger council-owned complex, and the earlier Dover club originally shared the lower pitch with a rugby club, but moved to the upper pitch in the 1950s, adding a grandstand in 1951, followed soon after by terracing and floodlights.

Dover Athletic continued to make improvements to the ground, although not in time to allow the club to take its place in the Football Conference in 1990. Subsequently, new turnstiles were installed and two new terraces and a second grandstand added. These improvements meant that the club was able to gain promotion after its second Southern League title in 1993. The stadium’s modern capacity is 5,745 with 1,350 seats and 3,642 spectators under cover.

In 2007 the club announced that under the new sponsorship deal with SeaFrance the stadium would be known officially as the SeaFrance Crabble Stadium, but a year later it was announced that the deal would not be renewed due to the ferry operator’s financial constraints. On 1 July 2008 local car dealership Perry’s was announced as the club’s new main sponsor and the stadium rebranded as the Perry’s Crabble Stadium, an arrangement which lasted until 2012. Between 2003 and 2004 it was known as the Hoverspeed Stadium under the terms of another such agreement. Margate played their home matches at Crabble for two seasons from 2002 until 2004, while their own Hartsdown Park ground was being redeveloped.

ManagerANDREW HESSENTHALER IS AN ENGLISH FOOTBALL MANAGER AND FORMER PLAYER WHO IS CURRENTLY MANAGER OF DOVER ATHLETIC. HE BEGAN HIS CAREER IN NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL AND DID NOT TURN PROFESSIONAL UNTIL HE JOINED WATFORD AT THE AGE OF 26.

In 1996, Hessenthaler joined Gillingham and spent the next ten years at the club as player and later player-manager, managing the club to its highest ever finish in the English football league system and becoming regarded as a legend of the Kent club. After leaving Gillingham, he had a short spell at Barnet, before joining Dover Athletic in 2007. In his two seasons in charge he led the club to successive championships, of Isthmian League Division One South and the Isthmian League Premier Division. After three years at Dover, he became manager at Gillingham for the second time, but his contract was terminated at the end of the 2011–12 season. He returned to the club as assistant manager in 2014, before taking on a similar role at Leyton Orient the following year. In 2016, he was appointed manager of the club, but was sacked later the same year. In November he was appointed manager of Eastleigh, but the following year left to return to Dover.

NON-LEAGUE CAREER

As a teenager, Hessenthaler played for the youth team of his local club Dartford. He later joined Fawkham-based amateur team Corinthian, but Charlton Athletic took him on in 1983 on a non-contract trial basis. He failed to secure a contract with the club, however, and returned to playing on a part-time basis while working as a builder. In 1986, he was spotted by Dartford manager Peter Taylor while playing in a Kent Senior Cup match. Hessenthaler signed for his hometown club on a wage of £40 per week, the first regular income he had ever received for playing.

Hessenthaler spent four years at the club, during which time Dartford reached the semi-finals of the FA Trophy on two occasions and finished twice as runners-up in the Southern League. In 1990, he was called up to the England National Game XI, the national team for semi-professional players. Later that year, he moved on to Redbridge Forest, where he spent one season and helped the team win the Isthmian League championship.

SUBSEQUENT CAREER

On 19 January 2006, Hessenthaler signed for League Two strugglers Barnet on a short-term contract until the end of the season. Although he considered retiring at the end of the season, he was persuaded by manager Paul Fairclough to sign a new contract for a further year. In October 2006, he was named in the League Two team of the week, but at the end of the 2006–07 season, Barnet announced that his contract would not be renewed.

Shortly after his departure from Barnet, Hessenthaler was appointed manager of Dover Athletic of the Isthmian League First Division South. In his first season in charge, he played regularly, making over 30 appearances as he led the team to the championship of the division and promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division. The following season, he led the team to a second consecutive championship as Dover won the Isthmian League Premier Division title to gain promotion to Conference South. In the 2009–10 season, Dover reached the play-offs for promotion to the Conference National, but lost at the semi-final stage to Woking. Hessenthaler, at the age of 44, announced his retirement as a player after the match.

On 20 May 2010, Hessenthaler resigned as Dover manager, and the following day, he became the manager of Gillingham, who had just been relegated to Football League Two, for the second time. His contract was terminated at the end of the 2011–12 season after the Gills narrowly missed out on the play-offs for promotion to League One, although he was offered a seat on the board of directors and a “football development role”. He left the position of director of football at Gillingham in 2013 with a view to returning to management. In July 2014 he returned to Gillingham as assistant manager under manager Peter Taylor, and was appointed joint caretaker manager, along with Darren Hare, Steve Lovell and Mark Patterson, following the sacking of Taylor on 31 December 2014. At the end of the 2014–15 season, Hessenthaler left the club to become assistant manager at Leyton Orient. In April 2016, he was promoted to the position of manager when player-manager Kevin Nolan was stripped of his managerial responsibilities, however Hessenthaler was sacked in September of the same year. In April 2017 Hessenthaler was appointed as assistant manager of National League club Eastleigh, and in November of the same year stepped up to the role of manager. In October 2018 he returned to Dover as manager following the sacking of Chris Kinnear.

Dover Athletic swept to the Southern League Premier Division title in 1992-93. Chris Kinnear’s side lost just once at home, 1-0 to Cheltenham Town, and hammered Cambridge City 5-0. Dover clinched the title with five games left when Corby Town, the only club able to catch them, lost at home to Atherstone United. They gained 86 points, finishing 13 ahead of runners-up Cheltenham, securing a place in the Conference cruelly denied them three years earlier when their ground was deemed not up to standard. Dover failed to achieve the Southern League and Cup ‘double’ when they surprisingly lost 3-2 to Stourbridge in the Southern League Cup final.

Dover Athletic won promotion via the Conference South play-offs in 2013-14. Chris Kinnear’s side began with two wins but then lost five of their next six games. Dover won only seven home matches but their 13 away wins was the best in the Conference overall, combined with just five away defeats. They qualified for the play-offs in fifth position after losing only two of their last 15 games. Moses Ademola and Ricky Modeste scored two goals apiece as Dover beat Sutton United 4-1 on aggregate in the play-off semi-finals. They defeated Ebbsfleet United 1-0 in the Conference South play-off final. Dover narrowly lost 1-0 at MK Dons in the FA Cup second round.

Dover Athletic stormed to the Isthmian League Premier Division title with a record 104 points in 2008-09. Andy Hessenthaler’s side won 13 of their first 14 games and lost just once at home all season, 2-1 to Boreham Wood in their penultimate match. Dover were twice held to a draw at The Crabble, against Carshalton and Staines. The 3-0 victory at home to Tooting & Mitcham in mid-December attracted a 2,760 crowd. Leading marksman Frannie Collin and Shaun Welford scored 37 goals between them. Dover finished a massive 22 points ahead of runners-up Staines Town. They were defeated 3-2 at Billericay in the Isthmian League Cup quarter-finals.

Dover Athletic reached the FA Cup third round for the first time in 2010-11. Martin Hayes’ side triumphed 5-1 at Erith Town in the second qualifying round, then beat Cambridge City 3-1 and Farnborough 5-0 after a replay to reach the first round proper. First-half goals by Adam Birchall and Luke I’Anson gave Dover a 2-0 win over Gillingham in front of 7,475 at Priestfield Stadium. Birchall scored twice more as they defeated Aldershot Town 2-0 watched by 4,123 at The Crabble in the second round. Dover lost 2-0 at Huddersfield Town in the third round. They narrowly failed to qualify for the Conference South play-offs despite Birchall scoring 34 goals.

Off the pitch, members of the Barnet FC Walking Football Team were proud to attend the Community Shield at Wembley Stadium as guests of the FA and Dark Horses Media Agency who thanked us after spending the day filming helping to launch the joint FA / Prince William Film on Mental Health awareness.

We would like to thank the FA for a wonderful experience at Club Wembley and make you aware of the launch of #HeadsUp, this is a brilliant cause to make men and their families more aware of the importance of talking through their problems and not bottling up emotions. #HeadsUp will harness the influence and popularity of football to help show the nation that we all have mental health and it is just as important as physical health.

If anyone wants immediate support, they can also text ‘HeadsUp’ to 85258 to connect with a trained crisis volunteer, who will talk to them via text message, sharing only what feels comfortable, and help them through the moment, working together on a plan for longer-term support. Sutton was our first away day and first Tuesday night game of the season and, in all honesty, it wasn’t the one I was looking forward to the most. Nevertheless, me and my Dad set off from Leeds around midday to start our long journey to South London. We took the M1, stopping for lunch along the way, before continuing through London arriving in Sutton around 6:30pm. We managed to find parking about 5 minutes away from the ground and set off walking. Sutton’s ground is a bit of an odd one as you literally walk to the away end through a park. Inside the away terrace is rather small so it was already looking quite busy. We got ourselves some food for tea and took a place in the back of the terrace behind the goal to watch the warm ups. As the teams went inside, the away end continued to fill up and by 7:45pm the place was packed to applaud the teams out.

The game did get off to a fairly slow start with little happening in the first quarter of an hour. However, once we settled into the game we saw some nice football and nearly took the lead on 28 minutes through Jack Taylor but he wasn’t able to find enough space to score. On 32 minutes Tutonda was fouled in the box and, despite our protests, the ref waved it away. He did however, award us a penalty 5 minutes later when Tutonda was clearly taken out by their goalie. Simeon Akinola stepped up on his birthday and sent the goalie the wrong way, taking us into half time with a 1 goal advantage. Our goal clearly gave us momentum as just 4 minutes into the second half Dan Sparkes hit the post and on 55 minutes Akinola’s shot went just over the bar. But on 58 minutes, it was Sutton who scored with Beautyman hitting the top corner. We switched off slightly and came close to conceding again when Collins’ shot went just over the bar. However, towards the end of the game we came back into it with Jack Taylor coming so close to scoring. We had a couple more attempts going forward and Loach pulled off two excellent saves to keep us out of the trouble but the game finished 1-1.

We walked back to the car and drove into London where we stayed overnight before making our way back to Leeds (via a day out in Southend) the following day. Although the draw was frustrating it was probably a fair result in the end, with standout performances from James Dunne and David Tutonda. The 319 Bees fans were in good voice until the end too and all in all it was much nicer than last season’s trip!

The EFL have announced the Football League Trophy will have a new title sponsor this season. With the first set of fixtures having taken place last week, the competitions new title was only announced the day before it kicked off. Having been called the Checkatrade Trophy for the past three seasons, it will now be named the Leasing.com Trophy. The competition involved all 24 clubs from each of League 1 and League 2, as well as, controversially, 16 category 1 academy sides from either Premier League or Championship sides. The competition has also caused some controversy over the past few years with its reformat to now include a group stage.

After participating in a publicity stunt alongside new sponsors Paddy Power during a friendly away at Rochdale, Championship side Huddersfield Town have been charged by the FA for breaching their rules on kit sponsorship. During the friendly game last month, the Terriers wore a one off ‘spoof’ shirt that included a giant Paddy Power logo in a sash form diagonally across the whole shirt. This was part of the betting company’s new promotional campaign about ‘unsponsoring’ shirts, which involves having plain shirts with no sponsor on at all, going back to a more traditional kit. The stunt was seen as an ‘opening’ to the campaign, with the actual shirts being blank, with Newport County, Motherwell, Macclesfield Town and Southend United also being part of the campaign. The FA rules state that all shirts must have only “one single area not exceeding 250 square centimetres on the front of the shirt” for advertising. Despite it being a friendly and being a one off shirt, the club have still been charged and fined, and have until this Friday to respond.

What’s the Buzz?

W H A T ’ S T H E B U Z Z

The farther of a knife crime victim has said that he will be “emotional” when Championship side QPR rename their Loftus Road stadium after the charity that he formed in his son’s memory. Back in April, the west London club announced their intention to rename their ground after a charity, with a shortlist of 5 charities going to a fans vote. The Kiyan Prince Foundation was the overwhelming favourite, picking up 63% of the votes. Prince was a 15 year old member of the R’s academy, but was tragically stabbed and killed in May 2006. “When the unveiling happens there will be tears of joy” said Mark Prince, Kiyans father. “His mum, I haven’t seen her that happy since the day we lost our son. Even just sharing the news with her she was over the moon and so excited”.

Neal Ardley, the manager of Notts County, our opponents last weekend, has said that the fixture schedule of the National League is too ‘hectic’, and is “too much too soon”. He continued to say that he believes that it is too demanding and strenuous on teams at the lower levels of the game. “I think it’s too

much too soon, if you piled that on to the Premier League you would have all the major managers pulling their hair out” he said. “I know they have it with internationals and players jetting halfway across the world. That’s why they have to have big squads. But it’s far too much. I complained a couple of years ago when they used to have the league cup on the first Tuesday of the week and it went to extra time”. This comes after the side will play 14 games in just 56 days, an average of a game every 4 days, from the beginning of the season.

Last week it was announced that another former Bee has found a new club. Nicky Deverdics, who scored twice in 51 appearances between 2008 and 2010, has now resigned for one of his other former clubs Gateshead. He joins the National League North side having previously played for them at the very start of his career, scoring once during his 22 appearances in the Northern Premier League Premier Division during the 2006/07 season. His career has taken him to various non league clubs at various levels, the Scottish Premier League with Gretna, 1. deild karla

(Iceland’s second division) side BÍ/Bolungarvík, and to the Faroe Islands top division, the Effodeildin, with Tvøroyrar Bóltfelag.

Another former Bee on the move last week was Bondz N’Gala. He signed for Ebbsfleet United on Friday, ahead of their game against AFC Fylde last weekend. After coming through the ranks at West Ham United, he made several loan spells and transfers at EFL and Conference Premier clubs before ending up at then League 1 Stevenage. After having made several appearances for Hertfordshire rivals during the 2012/13, he signed for us, making 6 appearances as we would go on to get relegated, before being recalled following an injury crisis at Broadhall Way. He then returned to the Hive in 2014, and would help us to the Conference title the following year, going on to make 107 appearances in black and amber over the following 2 ½ years, before moving to several short spells at various non league clubs, spending last season at Crawley Town.

Despite currently only being just over a week into the new season, we have already seen the first manager sacked of the season. The first boss to lose their job is Garry Thompson, who was dismissed by National League North side Bradford Park Avenue just five days into the new season. He had been managing the club for just two league games this season, but led his side to embarrassing 5-0 defeats in both of them. Firstly the Avenue were smashed away at Curzon Ashton last Saturday, before being defeated by the same scoreline at home to Guiseley last Tuesday. Thompson had only been appointed in May, and the club had lost many of their key friendlies under his leadership.

Striker Kane Hemmings has resigned for Dundee after three seasons away. Having played academy football at Tamworth, the now 27 year old moved to Scotland to play for Rangers in 2008, playing just ten times for their first team, before moving to Cowdenbeath in 2011. After spending a year back in England with Barnsley, he returned north of the border to the Dee. After a brilliant season during the 2015/16 campaign, which saw hit find the net 25 times during the 42 games that he played, he returned to England

again for a season at each of Oxford Untied and Mansfield Town. He spent last season at Notts County, but his 14 goals could not rescue them from relegation. After having appeared for County in their first two games this season, he moves back to Scotland on a three year deal.

Leyton Orient dedicated their 1-0 win against Cheltenham Town on the opening day of the season to former manager Justin Edinburgh. The former Southend United, Tottenham Hotspur and Portsmouth defender died five days after suffering from a cardiac arrest at a gym, just days after returning from Madrid with some other former Tottenham players, and just a month on from winning the National League title with Orient. Ironically, it was Josh Wright, the last player signed by Edinburgh, who scored the only goal of the game to win all three points for the O’s. Shortly after what would prove to be the winning goal, the Robins were reduced to 9 men with two red cards in quick succession. Upon scoring his goal, Wright pointed to the sky, before celebrating by holding a shirt

with Edinburgh’s name on. Other tributes to Edinburgh included two flags, one of which was paid for by money raised by two of Cheltenham supporters’ groups, were carried around the stadium before the beginning of the game, a minute’s silence was held, and home supporters held up a series of banners to create a “JE3” mosaic.

The FA have announced that from this season the Women’s Super League and various other women’s fixtures will be shown via live stream on a new platform. The new FA Player will now provide live showings of over 150 domestic women’s fixtures, as well as highlights from England women national team games and the Women’s FA Cup. On top of this, the BBC will be continuing to show a WSL game every weekend on their iPlayer and BBC Sport websites. It is planned that many WSL games will be shown, as well as both FA Cup semi finals and the final.

One unbelievably sad event of the break was the tragic passing of Justin Edinburgh at the age of just 48. Only in April Leyton Orient celebrated regaining their Football League status, and the tributes were dignified and heartfelt. I saw Justin play for both Tottenham and Billericay, and followed his managerial career with the likes of Newport and once again Ricay. There was so much more to follow. The memorial service at Chelmsford Cathedral was attended by the likes of Ossie Ardilles, Teddy Sheringham, Barry Fry and Glenn Hoddle as well as the great and the good of Non-League Football.

Referred to this in the first notes, a three-part interview conducted by Tonbridgbee “I’ve always seen football very clearly in my head”, Darren declares, whilst admitting his vocabulary changed when promoted to dealing with first team players” as opposed to youngsters at Dagenham and Redbridge. Darren also makes reference to creating a different pre-season friendly programme to last season. Personally I watched Darren play for Hendon, and guide some of the youngsters at Vale Farm, where the then nomadic Dons were then playing, early indications of where his future lay.

I have also spoken of this site previously and was surprised during the summer to see the Neath and District League added to the competitions included, so my most recent game involved CWM Wanderers, advancing my total to 317. Cwemtwarch has a complicated history, encompassing as it does three counties, so only some of the residents were able to vote in the recent Brecon and Radnor bi election, where the majority of the Bojo Government was reduced to just one. Wanderers have a swankier website than my own town, and my friend s dad played for the team, as did his Uncle Aubrey Powell. Indeed Aubrey was a Welsh international who proudly wore the shirt on no less than eight occasions. Yet that would have been more for one of the few top flight footballers comfortably shorter than me, but for the Second World War Aubrey played for Leeds, Everton and Birmingham City and retired to work for a confectionery company in Leeds. Fortunately his wife dabbled successfully in stocks and shares, meaning Aubrey enjoyed a comfortable existence, unlike many who plied their trade in that era.

There have been several events documented during the holidays, not least the financial worries of both Bury and Bolton. Been to Gigg Lane on several occasions, but one future I remember when Fulham travelled to Bolton Wanderers for a clash at

the Reebok, as it was then known, was happy Campo standing outside , autographing programmes and items of clothing. Yeovil Town, who we beat in our first game, are in the process of welcoming new owners, and the same is true of Notts County, who were also relegated. One story I learned before the Glovers game was of the former Bees forward Steve Regan. He collided violently with the goalpost at the old Huish ground, yet, not entirely unsurprisingly for those who remember Mr Regan, the goalpost suffered. This story brought to you courtesy of Mr Mark Ashfield, who wishes Steve well.

Good news for Aarron Pullen, former media person at the Hive who is settling after his relocation to Gibraltar. Not sure of his influence, but he might organise a pre-season friendly, although there is no such thing as an easy game these days, and those Barbary apes pack a punch.

My first visit to the home of Dover was for a friendly against Tottenham, so my dad got to see future Barnet stars David McDonald and Lee Hodges. Curiously Lee‘s managerial career has essentially been centred on the South West with two spells in charge of Truro City. Barnet fans also got to see Margate at the Crabble as part of the ongoing ground issues which have haunted Hartsdown Park for so many years.
