HI BEES FANS AND FIRSTLY I JUST WANT TO WISH ALL OF OUR
WONDERFUL FANS WELLDuring this difficult time for us all. It is
frustrating to still not have you with us but I am hopeful at the
turn of the year we’ll be able to perhaps have you back in at The
Hive London cheering us on.
From the Manager
I am feeling much better after having to, of course, isolated in
the last couple of weeks. I want to take this chance to thank Steve
and the rest of the staff who did amazingly to keep us going during
that period where we have several off with the virus. It was a real
resilient effort from the boys in the last round and I am immensely
proud of their performance. They had limited time to train before
the game, but the boys who featured showed immense character to go
and win the match, it would have been easy to laydown and make
excuses but we didn’t and got out our rewards.
The point at Wrexham was another positive result, its pleasing
to see us keep back to back clean sheets in the league, after our
shaky start with the number of goals we conceded in the first few
matches. I thought the back four did brilliantly well against a
physical Wrexham and young Aymen did well too when called upon.
After today,
hopefully we can build some momentum in the league ahead of
Christmas.
I want to welcome all the players and staff from Burton Albion
to The Hive for today’s match. I am sure it will be a fantastic cup
tie this afternoon and I am glad you will all be able to watch the
match live. They are a very very good side and we will have to be
right at it if we’re going to pull off a result this afternoon. I
have full faith in the boys though and I know we are more than
capable of matching our League One opposition. They have plenty of
quality, but so do we, so I am sure it will be a great match.
I know we have your support and I’d like to thank you for
sticking with us, particularly during the last few weeks. It’s been
difficult for the Club, but your messages of support have really
helped spurr us on.

this extremely difficult period. As we approach the second
lockdown.
From the Captain
I want to stress the importance of keeping in touch with your
friends and family in any way possible. Its important that although
we can’t physically be with our loved ones that we all stay
connected during these tough times. I am hoping that we can give
you all something to smile about this afternoon, by providing a
good win in the Cup!
It has been a really difficult couple of weeks for everyone
connected with the Club, but it’s nice to almost be through the
other side of it all. The boys who have had to step up deserve
immense credit and you should all feel really proud of the way the
Club has got through this tough period. I thought the boys did a
great job to get through against Leiston, they had only been able
to train for one day and it was a really young squad, so to get the
result was big for the Club. I want to congratulate each of them
for their attitude to the situation and it was nice they got the
reward for their efforts.
Then we have gone to Wrexham, again without 4 or 5 key players
and get a good point on the road. We only had one day of training
in the build-up to the game, so, on the whole, I think we can be
pleased with the result. Although I did think on the balance of
things, we also know it was an opportunity missed to get three
points, as we had some good moments in the match. But when you take
everything into account, we can look back on this period with
immense pride.
Onto this afternoon and who doesn’t love the FA Cup!? There’s no
doubt that we come into this afternoon’s game as underdogs, but it
means we can attack the game with no fear and really take the game
to our visitors this afternoon. They also have to be respected,
they are from a higher division and have plenty of quality, but we
have belief we can pull off a result this afternoon.
I guess the only tinge of sadness is that for an FA Cup tie like
this we would have a big crowd and it would have been a great
atmosphere. We know that we have your support from home and we’ll
do everything to make you proud this afternoon.

BARNET OVER 65’SAfter the success of our over 65’s team of
beating Watford at the Hive London
Walking football
After a 3-1 victory over Watford and a 2-2 draw against
Cheshunt, the Bees welcomed our good friends from the London Irish
Walking Football team to the Hive, winning both 1-0 and 2-0.
The lads controlled both matches against strong opposition who
had their keeper to thank for keeping them in the games with a
penalty save and some fine saves.
Goals by Steven Lewis and a brace by Ken Patterson saw us to
victory captained by Steve Chittenden with Tom Moran marshalling
the midfield. In between matches, the Bees beat Barnet Blue 2-1 who
were led by Kevin Ziants.
It gave competitive Walking Football to many who had not played
before leading to a successful afternoon of fun, friendship and
improving the health of body and mind with thanks to the Chairman
for his continued support of community Walking Football along with
Matt Dixon from the Hive Foundation.

OPPOSITIONTODAY’S
THE 2020/21 season will see Burton Albion competing in Sky Bet
League One, following the curtailment of the 2019/20 season due to
the coronavirus pandemic.
League One Clubs voted by an overwhelming majority to formally
end the 2019/20 season, with the Brewers finishing in twelfth place
with 48 points. On 18 May 2020, club captain Jake Buxton was
appointment as Burton Albion player/manager, following Nigel
Clough’s decision to step down as manager.
The previous season saw the Brewers finish in eighth with 63
points, putting in a strong second half to the 2018/19 season.
Nigel Clough’s team did however record another piece of Burton
Albion history, reaching the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup - the
last EFL team left in the competition.
Albion beat Shrewsbury away in the first round to kick start an
amazing run that saw the club beat Premiership oposition for only
the second time when Burnely were brushed aside at the Pirelli
Stadium. Championship clubs Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest were
also beaten at home before the Brewers stunned Middlesbrough with
an away win in the quarter finals.

Albion lined up alongside Spurs, Chelsea and Manchester City in
the semi-final draw landing the Premier League Champions over two
legs. Albion shipped nine goals in the away tie but lost to a
solitary strike from Aguero on home soil to cap a memorable cup
run.IBurton Albion found themselves back in League One after two
seasons in the Championship, playing at the highest level in the
club’s history. The Brewers were relegated on the last day of the
2017/18 season away at Preston in heart-breaking circumstances.
With less than five minutes to go in the match Albion were
drawing 1-1 with Preston while Bolton were losing 2-1 against
Nottingham Forest, results that would have secured safety for the
Brewers. But Bolton scored twice in two minutes to take a 3-2 lead
and Albion were forced to chase an injury time winner at Deepdale
only to concede instead and lose 2-1.
The Brewers were relegated for the first time in more than 40
years after a remarkable two seasons as the smallest club in the
Championship. Albion survived in the 2016/2017 season with a game
to spare thanks to a 1-1 draw at Barnsley.
Albion had been promoted to the Championship on the final day of
the 2015/2016 season with Nigel Clough’s team earning a draw at
Doncaster to secure second spot behind Wigan (see picture).
The previous season, under Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, the Brewers
had been promoted to League One after being crowned League Two
champions.
It has been a meteoric rise for the club, which only entered the
Football League after being crowned (Blue Square) Football
Conference champions in 2008-09.
After a first season that saw the Brewers comfortably
consolidate their new found status with a thirteenth place finish,
the second term in the Football League was a more difficult
campaign given that the club had to play over half of their league
matches in the final three months of the season after numerous
postponements left them with up to eight games in hand on their
rivals.
From a comfortable position just five points off the play-offs
in December their inactivity meant that at the start of February a
relegation battle ensued with a six game unbeaten run at the end of
the season eventually confirming League status for a third season
with a game to spare. The backlog of games was also affected by the
club’s best ever FA Cup run. Championship side Middlesbrough were
beaten in the third round but the club’s first ever appearance in
the fourth round ended in a 3-1 defeat to another Championship
side, Burnley.
The club’s rise through the Conference and into the Football
League coincided with the move from previous ground Eton Park to
their current home, the Pirelli Stadium, built just a stone’s throw
from their former home on the site of the Italian tyre giant’s
Sports and Social Club.
Although the ground opened for business in July 2005 with a low
key pre-season friendly against Chester City the ground
was officially opened in November 2005 by Manchester United who
ironically returned to the Pirelli two months later in the FA Cup
third round with Albion holding the Premiership giants to a 0-0
draw in front of a then record ground attendance of 6,191 before
losing in a replay at Old Trafford.
From there the Brewers kicked on and from being strugglers in
the Conference the club moved forwards over the next three years
narrowly missing out on the play-offs followed by an unlucky
play-off semi-final defeat to Cambridge United and culminating with
the winning of the Conference. The Brewers racked up an impressive
run of twelve straight wins mid-season to streak ahead of the pack
but when former manager Nigel Clough left for Derby County in
January 2009 with the club in great form it seemed the title was a
formality but as nerves crept in Albion’s lead was whittled away
and the title went to the final day when despite Albion’s 2-1
defeat at Torquay United, Cambridge United’s failure to beat
Altrincham handed the Blue Square Premier title to the Brewers.
The Pirelli Stadium has hosted an England ‘C’ international and
a UEFA under 19s international along with several UEFA under 17’s
matches featuring England, Italy, Sweden and Malta. An England
Women’s U-19s international between England and Scotland also
registered the highest ever crowd for a fixture at that level. The
ground also hosted the Blue Square North play-off final for three
years between 2006 and 2008 and is the regular host of the
Independent School’s Football Association junior finals each
March.
In 2018 it was one of the host venues for the U17 Euros with
England playing in the quarter-finals at the Pirelli Stadium.
Ahead of the 2009/10 season the club was granted permission to
increase capacity at the Pirelli Stadium to 6,912.

Buxton had returned to the Brewers in 2017 in our second
Championship season, becoming club captain and making 99
appearances prior to his step into management at the age of 35.
A centre-back in his playing days, Buxton worked his way through
the Mansfield Town Academy and became one of the youngest captains
in the League during his time at the club, before moving to the
Pirelli Stadium in 2008.
His performances earned him the Player of the Year award and a
move to Derby County to link back up with Nigel Clough, and having
worked hard to establish himself at Pride Park after making the
step up to the Championship, his whole-hearted performances made
him a firm

favourite among Rams supporters and he played a key part in the
Rams’ run to the Championship Play-Off Final in 2014.
In 2016, Wigan Athletic moved to make Jake a part of their
defence upon their return to the Championship after a season in
League One and after a year with the Latics, Jake expressed a
desire to move closer to home and a return to Burton Albion proved
an ideal option, once again with Nigel Clough.
Jake was entrusted with the captaincy in August 2017 and in the
summer of 2019, he signed a one-year deal that would keep him at
the Pirelli Stadium for the subsequent 2019-20 season and,
following the departure of Clough that summer, Buxton was chosen to
take the reins at the Pirelli Stadium.

senior career with the Brewers, coming through our youth
system.
Brayford was the first graduate of the current youth system at
Burton Albion and went on to make over 100 appearances for the
first team under Nigel Clough before moving to Crewe Alexandra
where he twice won Player of the Year.
Reunited with Clough at Derby County in 2010, he again picked up
the Player Of The Year Award in his first season at Pride Park, and
after three years with the Rams, Cardiff City paid a substantial
fee to take John to South Wales and although he didn’t feature in
the Bluebird’s Premier League campaign, he was a key figure upon
their return to the Championship.
Brayford linked up with Clough for a third time at Sheffield
United, although injuries limited his opportunities towards the end
of his spell with the Blades and the defender spent the 2016/17
season on loan with Burton Albion before penning that permanent
deal after his Blades release in the summer of 2017.
He has continued his third spell with the Brewers, most recently
signing a two-year deal keeping him at the Pirelli Stadium until
2022.
WHOLEHEARTED DEFENDER JOHN BRAYFORD
In January 2020 to join Burton Albion on a two-and-a-half year
deal.
Describing himself as a box-to-box player, Joe made his name
with a number of eye-catching performances for West Ham’s U23s in
Premier League 2, where his technical ability was evident.
Joe had also featured for West Ham’s Leasing.com Trophy side on
several occasions over four seasons, and had a successful loan
spell at Northampton early in 2019, losing just one of 10 games and
scoring one particularly stunning goal for the Cobblers.
He scored his first goal for the club in his second game away at
AFC Wimbledon before netting a brace for the Brewers away at
Lincoln City, and another in this season’s EFL Trophy tie at
Peterborough United.

LUCAS AKINS NOW ENTERS HIS SEVENTH SEASON WITH BURTON
ALBIONHaving become a fan favourite and winning back-to-back
supporters’ and players’ Player of the Year awards in 2018 and
2019.
Lucas’s work-rate and knack of grabbing vital goals made him a
key part of Albion’s rise through the divisions from League Two to
the Championship and a mainstay of the team.
Originally on the books of hometown club Huddersfield Town,
Akins made his way through the ranks to make his Terriers debut in
August 2007, before dropping into non-league on loan with Northwich
Victoria.
After leaving Huddersfield, spells with Partick Thistle and
Hamilton Academical in Scotland eventually led to a move back into
English professional football with Tranmere Rovers.
Numerous eye-catching performances at Prenton Park persuaded
Stevenage to pay a sizeable fee to boost their attacking line-up
and they were rewarded with 10 goals in 49 games, as Akins finished
top scorer at Broadhall Way.
Former Brewers boss Gary Rowett made Lucas a key target in the
summer of 2014 as he looked to win promotion from League Two, and
Lucas led the scoring charts as Albion won successive promotions -
with several key goals that will live long in the memory of Brewers
fans.
BURTON-BORN KANE HEMMINGSHe signed for his hometown club in the
summer of 2020 after leaving Scottish side Dundee.
The son of former Brewers player Tony, Kane began his career
with Tamworth before moving to Scottish giants Rangers in 2010.
Two spells at Cowdenbeath produced a productive return of goals,
leading to a move to Barnsley and then a first spell at Dundee, for
whom Hemmings netted 28 goals in 2015/16.
Two seasons at Oxford United were followed by a season-long loan
at Mansfield Town and then 14 goals for Notts County, before a
return to Dundee which yielded 10 goals in 25 league games.

I’d say Notts County is probably in the top 5 of away days I’ve
been to most. Growing up in Leeds, Nottingham’s always been quite a
close one for us and due to their history, one we’ve always enjoyed
going to. I have many fond memories of our away days here, most of
which include lunch at Pizza Hut in the main square, my Dad nagging
us to go to the caves (we’ve still never been though!) and dragging
my best friend to most of the games too because it was a local one!
Furthermore, I remember some Tuesday night trips (some of the only
ones that ever favoured me), rushing home from school then waiting
for Dad to get home from work to take us to the game. Just by
chance, this fixture has fallen on or around my Mum’s birthday a
few times meaning this trip has often doubled up as Mum’s birthday
treat (lucky her!)
I don’t think I have a ‘favourite’ day out at Notts County but
rather a collection of lots of nice memories. One of these includes
our trip there in October 2017. Despite a 2-1 loss, the day was
topped off nicely as I had a good chat with Rossi Eames after the
game. I will also never forget during our game there the previous
season when the ground fell silent just as Michael Nelson was
shouting to let the ref know exactly what he thought of Notts
getting our throw in (I’ll leave the words he used to your
imagination). A more recent memory includes our 2-1 win there last
season under Darren Currie. We got a good following that day
despite the game being broadcast on BT Sport and our fans were in
great spirits throughout. At full time, it’s fair to say the away
end just felt happy and we brought out some good retro chants too!
More generally, I always enjoy the walk to the ground from the town
centre where we usually park if we have a Saturday game. It’s a
really pretty walk with a nice view of The City Ground as you go
too. Furthermore, County fans have always had pretty good banter
with us so it’s nice to get a chance to speak to a few of those on
the way to the game. As much as I love making a day out of this
game though, there’s something equally as good about a Tuesday
night game sitting in the cold at Meadow Lane. I’ll be honest, the
scores of these games haven’t always made me feel warm inside
(though their hot chocolate always has) and this was especially
true in 2015 when we played them the day before Mum’s birthday but
lost 4-2. However, I still felt it was an enjoyable evening and I’m
sure it’s one of Mum’s most memorable birthdays!
Whilst I was disappointed with the result last weekend, I was
proud to see how the boys put up a fight to come back from 3-0 down
when the game should’ve been written off and since Covid has
stopped me going Notts County twice now, I think a trip is well
overdue.

BREEN WAS DECORATED PLAYER
He made over 500 appearances over the course of an outstanding
20 year career.
Gary Breen
He began at Maidstone United and made his first appearance at
the young age of 17. After one full season with the club he joined
Gillingham where he eventually became a first-team regular making
51 appearances for the club. As a result of his improvement
Peterborough became very keen on him and made a £70,000.bid. It was
accepted and the young talent of Gary Breen was now at London Road.
He only had one full season at Peterborough United, but did well
enough to draw attention from Birmingham City, who paid £250,000
for him on February 9th, 1996. Less than 12 months after arriving
at Birmingham, Breen was wanting to take the next step, to the
highest tier of English Football. The team that came calling were
Coventry City. On the 30th of January 1997 he moved to the Sky
Blues in a £2.5 million deal. He made his debut for the club
shortly afterwards against Sheffield Wednesday on the 1st February
which ended in 0-0 draw.
Following the 2002 World Cup after Breen and his Ireland
teammates made it to the last 16 and narrowly lost to the European
giants of Spain on penalties , he was signed on a free transfer by
West Ham United. The centre back did not live up to the high
expectations and left the club after relegation from the topflight
and a disappointing 18 appearances in all competitions.
He was signed on a free transfer by his old Ireland manager Mick
McCarthy for Sunderland at the age of 29 on the 5th

August 2003 , making 105 appearances and scoring 7 goals over 3
years at the Stadium of Light. In March 2006 McCarthy was sacked by
Chairman Bob Murray with 10 games to go until the end of the
season.
5 months later, on the 21st of July 2006 McCarthy was appointed
as Wolverhampton Wanderers manager. Breen was then signed on a
two-year deal, reuniting with McCarthy once more. He played almost
all the club’s games as they reached the play-offs in his first
season at Molineux.
He was made Wolves’ club captain for the 2007-08 season but
ended up missing several months through injury and after making 59
appearances for the club in the summer of 2008 the 34-year-old was
released and said goodbye to Mick McCarthy for the last time.
After a short break from football in December 2008, Breen
decided to take his career to Underhill just fifteen minutes away
from his birthplace Hendon and made 22 appearances in his first
season at centre back. The veteran defender landed the assistant
manager job the following season, many thought it was the end of
his playing days but Gary Breen believed he had one more year left

They won just one of their opening six Southern League First
Division games but results improved with ace marksman Stan Round
netting hat-tricks in consecutive home wins over Poole and Dover.
The Brewers defeated Hinckley Athletic 3-2, Corby Town 4-2,
Worcester City 5-2 and Bexley United 2-0 en route to the Southern
League Cup final, beating Weymouth 5-2 on aggregate. Stan Round was
top scorer with 41 goals and his partnership with newcomer Richie
Barker inspired a late run of nine successive wins, including a 7-0
win over Barry.
Won promotion in 1971/72. The Brewers had finished the previous
campaign unbeaten in 11 matches and Richie Norman’s side went from
strength to strength. Phil Annable starred in defence as they
remained unbeaten in another 20 games and it was not until late
February that Burton tasted defeat in the Southern League, losing
1-0 at home to Ilkeston. Defeats at leaders Kettering and
Wealdstone in the final month ended title hopes but promotion was
clinched with a 0-0 draw with Wellingborough in the penultimate
match. Goalkeeper Mick Allsopp kept 14 clean sheets.
Won promotion in 1965/66. The Brewers kicked off with a 1-0
defeat at Ashford Town but soared to the top of the table with a 12
match unbeaten run including an 8-0 demolition of Ramsgate. Peter
Taylor left in November to join Brian Clough at Hartlepool and Alex
Tait replaced him as player-boss. Burton bounced back from a 4-0
reverse at rivals Barnet to win all but one of their next nine
matches and finally clinched promotion in third place with an 8-0
victory at home to Deal Town. The Brewers also won the Merit Cup
after scoring 121 goals.

A string of early Northern Premier League defeats and an early
FA Cup exit put the manager under pressure before the Brewers
soared up the table with ten wins in 12 matches. Burton defeated
Northwich Victoria 2-0, Weymouth 3-0, Whitley Bay 1-0, Maidstone
United 1-0 and Dartford 4-1 in the FA Trophy before drawing 0-0
with Kidderminster in the Wembley final. They lost 2-1 in the
replay at The Hawthorns. Bob Gauden and Paul Bancroft netted 41
goals between them, while other stars included Nigel Simms, Martin
New, Alan Kamara and Paul Groves.
At the first attempt in 1973/74. He made three former Walsall
players - Bob Wesson, Frank Gregg and Stan Jones - the backbone of
his remodelled team and also introduced exciting young talent like
Frank Corrigan, Maitland Pollock and Steve Buckley. Burton raced to
the top of the table, losing just one of their opening 14 games and
leading marksman Bill Naylor grabbed a hat-trick in a 7-1 victory
at Bromsgrove in January. They won promotion as runners-up to
Stourbridge. Maitland Pollock and Steve Buckley were sold to Luton
Town.
The Brewers were never seriously challenged and remained
unbeaten at home all season. Nigel Clough’s side lost just twice on
their travels, at Emley and Lancaster City, scoring 106 goals as
they finished 15 points clear of runners-up Vauxhall Motors to win
promotion to the Conference for the first time. They also reached
the FA Trophy semi-finals for only the third time, beating Blyth
Spartans 3-0, Farnborough Town 3-2, Woking 3-0 and Chester City 2-0
before losing 5-2 on aggregate to eventual winners Yeovil Town.

matches and were bottom of the table at the start of November.
Goalkeeper Saul Deeney arrived from Notts County and Burton soared
clear of danger with four straight wins. In the FA Cup they
defeated Leek Town 2-0, Peterborough United 1-0 and Burscough 4-1
before holding Manchester United to a 0-0 draw in front of 6,191 at
Pirelli Stadium, losing 5-0 in the replay watched by 53,564 at Old
Trafford. The Brewers finished ninth in the Conference.
The Brewers raced to the top after dropping just two points in
their opening seven games but then gained only three wins in their
next nine. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink replaced Birmingham-bound Gary
Rowett as manager in November and plotted a 13 match unbeaten run.
Burton regained pole position with a 3-1 win at Dagenham &
Redbridge in February. They remained top despite losing their next
two matches and were unbeaten in their final 12 games, clinching
promotion with a 2-1 win at Morecambe and the title with a 3-2 win
at Cambridge United on the final day.
He scored inside two minutes of his debut as the Brewers began
with a 1-0 victory at Salisbury City. Nigel Clough’s side were
eleventh after five matches and a 2-1 defeat at Oxford United in
mid-October marked a turning point. Burton built up an almost
unassailable position at the top with a run of 17 unbeaten games in
which just two were drawn. After Clough left in January 2009 to
manage Derby County, Roy McFarland became caretaker-boss and Burton
almost let it slip in the closing weeks but won the title on the
final day.
The Brewers began with a 2-1 win at home to Scunthorpe and
emerged as early leaders after winning eight of their opening 11
League One games. They slipped to fifth place after just two wins
in their next five matches, including a 4-0 defeat at Fleetwood,
but trounced Colchester 5-1 and regained pole position with a 2-1
win at home to Millwall at the start of December. Nigel Clough
returned as manager and Burton remained top until losing 2-0 at
Millwall in late March but clinched promotion as runners-up with a
0-0 draw at Doncaster on the final day.

set to be in action. Due to the current lockdown, it is as yet
unknown if and when these fixtures will be played. Enfield Town
will host Maldon and Tiptree, Wingate and Finchley will travel to
Hornchurch,
Uxbridge are at home to Cray Wanderers, Haringey Borough host
Bishop’s Stortford, and Cheshunt
are away at Lowestoft Town. Welwyn Garden City have been given a
home tie against Hednesford

Last weekend saw the third qualifying round of the FA Trophy
take place, with several of our local sides
in action. Cheshunt won 4-3 away at Isthmian League Premier
rivals East Thurrock United, Royston Town
secured a 2-0 home victory over Hythe Town, whilst Haringey
Borough claimed a 2-1 away win over
Faversham Town. Wingate and Finchley won 3-0 on penalties after
a 1-1 draw away at Coggeshall Town,

whilst Welwyn Garden City beat Haywards Heath Town by the same

Berkhamsted also lost 2-1 at Marlow.
Also taking place last weekend was the FA Vase first round
proper, with yet more of our local clubs involved. Cockfosters lost
1-3 at home to Coggenhoe United, Hadley won 2-1 at home to Pagham,
Edgware Town won 3-0 at Worthing United, Clapton drew 1-1 at
Petersfield Town, losing 3-0 on penalties, Ilford beat FC Clacton
4-1, and Baldock Town lost 4-2 at Gorleston. Walthamstow 4-2 on
penalties at Ampthill Town, after a 1-1 draw, Colney Heath won 3-1
at home to New Salamis, whilst Hoddesdon Town lost 5-1 at Walsham
le Willows. North Greenford United won 6-2 away at Sandhurst
Town.

With that round now being completed, bar the several postponed
games that are being played over this weekend, the draw for the
second round proper has also been completed this week. As with the
FA Trophy draw above, due to the current lockdown, it is as yet
unknown if and when these fixtures are going to be played. Edgware
Town face an away trip to Lancing, Hadley have another home tie,
this time against Raynes Park Vale, Colney Heath are on the road at
Ilford, and Southall are away to Sutton Common Rovers, with North
Greenford drawing Walsham le Willows.
The Wrexham Supporters Trust (WST) have a meeting provisioned
for today (Sunday 8th November), to discuss the next step of the
proposed take over of the club by Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds.
The voting on the decision is scheduled to start tomorrow, and will
end on the 15th, when a decision is expected to be made. Over 2,000
WST members are expected to vote on the takeover, which could see
£2 million invested into the club. Wrexham have been fan owned
since 2011 and have been in the National League since 2008, when
they were relegated from League 2. They were in 19th place when the
league ended back in March, and were in the third tier in 2005.
League 2 side Salford City have appointed Richie Wellens as
their new manager. The Ammies go into this weekend in 10th place in
the fourth tier, three points off of the bottom playoff place with
a game in hand. The side appoint Wellens, who came through the
academy at Manchester United, after former manager Graham Alexander
was sacked on 12th October, with United legend Paul Scholes taking
temporary charge in the interim. 40 year old Wellens was manager of
Swindon Town last season, eventually winning the League 2 title on
points per game. Wellens’ first game in charge of the club was set
to be yesterday’s FA Cup tie against Hartlepool United at the
Peninsula Stadium.

Match Report
In an open first 10 minutes, neither side really threatened with
a clear cut opportunity. The game was very much a stop-start affair
for the opening 25 minutes with chances at a premium at a chilly
Racecourse Ground.
The first real opening came on 28 minutes as Anthony Jeffrey
swung a near-post cross in that just evaded Elliott Durrell at the
near post, before falling into the palms of Aymen Azaze.
Azaze was called into action seven minutes before the break, as
he did just enough to parry an effort from Kwame Thomas. The Bees
then went up field, with Eliot Richards having a strike deflected
into the palms of Rob Lainton in the host’s goal.

There were no further chances before the break and a scoreline
of nil-nil was a fair reflection in an uneventful first half.
The first chance of the second half fell the way of Barnet, as
Alex McQueen’s powerful free-kick was well saved by Lainton at the
near post. Meanwhile, on the hour mark, Jeffrey stung the palms of
Azaze with a decent effort from the corner of the penalty area.
The hosts started to build a bit of momentum as they forced
several corners that had the Bees penned back towards their own
goal. However, through the defensive leadership of the returning
Matt Preston, the Bees managed to negate the danger.
Much like the first half, the game never gained any sort of
rhythm or momentum with fouls breaking up play on regular
occasions.
The Bees almost found the breakthrough with 12 minutes left on
the watch as a quick breakaway found Pertrasso, but the Canadians
effort was saved by Lainton.
Steve Jenkins then introduced Alfie Pavey into the action as he
replaced Michael Petrasso with ten minutes left to play.
The Bees almost nicked it right at the death as yet another
quick counter-attack, found Josh Walker who did well to find the
space, but his effort was well saved by Lainton.
All in all, it was a good point for the Bees, who will be
pleased with their work considering the difficult circumstances
they have faced in the previous 10 days.

Key Personnel
35-year-old Jake Buxton is the current player-manager at the
Pirelli taking over the reins from Nigel Clough in May of this
year. His early playing career as a defender was with Mansfield
Town but he spent seven seasons with Derby County and one with
Wigan Athletic.

It is a well-known statistic that............The 11,000 Brewer’s
fans at Old Trafford in January 2006 for an FA Cup replay is the
highest away contingent ever recorded at the stadium. Burton lost
5-0 but it was a nice day out!

PREVIOUS MEETINGS AND MEMORIES
Our first meetings, back in the old Southern League days, were
always entertaining with Barnet normally coming out on top with
their goalscoring machine of a team during the 1960s’ (4-0, 3-0,
6-0 4-2) with Les Eason normally taking the goalscoring plaudits,
However it doesn’t get much better than Barnet 10 Burton Albion 0
in the Southern League Premier 1970, with Les Eason and Billy
Meadows scoring 4 goals each. ‘Those Were the Days’ by Mary Hopkin
was riding high in the charts at the time, I thought they’d never
end!
A tough 2-2 draw was fought out in the FA Cup in October 1989,
Gary Bull and Geoff Cooper with the goals, but the day will be
remembered for poor old Micky Bodley who scored two own goals that
afternoon. He says he still has nightmares over the game. Another
Bull goal in the replay saw us through to the 1st Round proper. In
April 2011 was when we were afforded a wonderful virtuoso
performance by Steve Kabba who grabbed all four goals in a 4-1 win.
Bank Holiday Monday 25th August 2003 saw a two goal Giuliano
Grazioli in fine form as Barnet ran out 3-2 winners.
The game that could have relegated us back into the Conference
in May 2012 was nail biting, but goals from Mark Byrne and Mark
Hughes saw us through 2-1 to survive in League 2 and I don’t really
remember getting home that night! Although very vivid was at the
final whistle when all the lads were celebrating in front of the
boisterous Bees fans (about 1,000 turned up).
But it was the food and not just the football inside the old
Park that attracted the crowds as the club were very proud of the
fact that their refreshment bars served only quality ‘brand name’
food and won awards year after year – at Underhill the crusty
cheese rolls were extraordinary but had nothing on Burton.
Thankfully, they have continued the tradition in the new stadium.
The meat and potato pies are simply spectacular, as are the chip
butties. I was fascinated to find out that for one visit ‘faggots
in gravy with peas’ was also available, and if you have never
experienced a ‘faggot’ then you haven’t lived!
Ground Description
The club left their Eton Park home in 2005 to reside in the £6.5
million Pirelli Stadium. The main stand which holds around 2,000 is
the focal point of the ground and a fairly
typical 21st century construction on a modest scale but it
offers all the usual corporate hospitality and more than copes with
the demands of League football attendances. Happily, the remainder
of the ground is terraced, fully covered and offering a reasonable
sight line as the rake is quite steep - very comforting. The normal
away terrace will be the Coors East Stand Terrace. Plenty of room,
hopefully three gorgeous Irish singing sisters, and good acoustics
await us. Normal capacity is 7,000 with around 2,100 seats.
CELEBRITY WATCH
It is with regret that I inform you that if you are looking for
famous residents and historical characters or hoping to add to your
autograph book Burton is a place to avoid. It appears that very few
figures in history hail from these parts. All I can offer is that
1970’s Chelsea FC hero Ian ‘I can throw the ball into the penalty
area from the half way line and impersonate a windmill’ Hutchinson
started his career at Burton, or the infamous Sir Oswald Mosley,
who inspired the design of our home kit in 2005/6. If you feel that
this information is incorrect, please let me know - thank you.
Without the town of Burton, we would never have sampled the
delights of Branston Pickle (essential with mature Cheddar cheese
in a sandwich) or Marmite on toast. Crosse and Blackwell had a
factory in the Branston area of the town where they invented the
wonderful sweet pickle and the Marmite Food Company was formed in
1902 and used the surplus brewery yeast extract to manufacture a
very salty paste - I love it! Sunday evenings after a hot bath,
lightly toasted real bread (you know the stuff you cut yourself?),
Lashings of slightly salted butter and a good dollop of the old
black stuff - nice work. Crumpets are even better, and Bovril is
also as good –
