BARDIA PUBLIC SCHOOL 37 Arthur Allen Drive BARDIA NSW 2565 9605 2459 Term 1 – Week 8 2020 Message from the Principal Dear members of the Bardia Public School community, Please see a special message regarding COVID-19 on the next page. Quite regularly I am contacted by concerned members of the BPS community about the actions of drivers around our school. U-turns out of the kiss ‘n’ ride, double parking, speeding, blocking the traffic on Macdonald Road in queuing for the kiss ‘n’ ride, parking illegally, leaving cars parked on the kiss ‘n’ ride etc., etc., these are just a few of the most common actions. Let me say it again, I deplore the actions of this minority of drivers, however, there is little I can do. My advice is that you never confront these people. However, as citizens you are well within your rights to report these drivers to the police. March April ALL EVENTS CANCELLED Thu 9 th April LAST DAY OF TERM 1 Having BUZZY on your phone during the COVID-19 pandemic is very wise. If you have any difficulties with BUZZY please let us know; alternatively you can contact BUZZY directly on [email protected] Please remember that you MUST be here at 3.00pm each afternoon to collect your child. There is no afternoon supervision provided. If you are going to be late regularly you should enrol your child in after-school care. Camp Australia is the licensor on school premises. If there is an emergency and you will be unavoidably late, please ring the school before 2.30pm and inform the office staff. Please note that children have been arriving at school long before 8.30am. Supervision is only provided from 8.30am. Novel Coronavirus continues its path across the planet. It is extremely contagious! We are telling the children to completely cover their mouths when coughing or sneezing and to wash their hands regularly! Good advice for grown-ups too! Every year we ask parents to make a voluntary contribution to the school. Unfortunately the school runs on a very tight budget and every dollar we can get from the voluntary contributions is extremely important to your child’s education. The voluntary contribution for 2020 is $45 for one child and $75 for two or more children. I guarantee that every single cent of this money will go directly to the purchase of educational resources for your children. Please help your child’s school! Term 1 – Week 8 – 2020

Message from the Principal Dear members of the Bardia Public School community,

Please see a special message regarding COVID-19 on the next page.

Dear Parents and Carers, Monday 16th March 2020 COVID-19 continues to spread across the globe. In Australia so far we have managed to contain the virus. Most of those with COVID-19 in this country are those who have brought the virus with them from overseas. However, the situation remains fluid and Australian Health authorities are continually updating their advice. On Friday afternoon our Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, following advice from Professor Brendan Murphy, Chief Medical Officer, decided that all public schools will stay open – for now. I know that this has caused a lot of discussion in the community and many other experts have come out and criticised this decision. Approximately 30 countries have closed all schools nationwide and a further 20 countries have closed schools in cities or regions. What we will do at BPS:

1. All assemblies and large gatherings of students are now banned. 2. All in school sporting events with more than 60 students are now banned. 3. All inter-school sport events have been cancelled. 4. All school activities involving more than 60 students are now banned.

The suggestion has been made that we should stagger recess and lunch times. This may be more appropriate for big schools that do not have large play areas. Fortunately, we have a very big playground and the children are able to spread out in the fresh air. My bigger concern, one not mentioned by any journalist in any articles I read over the weekend, regards something every teacher who works in a school knows only too well: the classroom is the environment in which illnesses are most likely to spread. What we will do at BPS:

1. Do not send your children to school if they show symptoms of having a cold, cough or flu.

2. Should any child show symptoms of having a cold, cough or flu they will be sent to the sickbay immediately. You will be contacted immediately and you will be instructed to take them home immediately.

3. The children will be instructed to wash their hands regularly throughout the day. 4. They will also be instructed to cough or sneeze into a tissue and not to touch their face.

(The current information is that masks are ineffective in preventing the transmission of COVID-19.) 5. I will be contacting ISS, the company responsible for cleaning our school and requesting that wiping surfaces

should now comprise the majority of cleaning at BPS.

Something else NOT mentioned by any journalist in any articles I read over the weekend regards the very large number of sick children sent to school every day. This is only going to get worse as the colder months approach. As noted above we will be sending these children home immediately. However, parents must also realise that when their child is sent to the sickbay it is very likely to contain other sick children. Normally we are very tolerant of children presenting at the sickbay with minor ailments, from now on we will be sending the majority of these children back to class. Many parents are already keeping their children at home. If this is the case then don’t forget that Mathletics and Reading Eggs are available online. These are excellent learning programs to keep your child engaged in learning. I also suggest that your children read for pleasure and watch children’s educational programs on television or the internet. While COVID-19 does not seem to make children extremely unwell (although they are carriers of COVID-19), should your child have a previous health condition, especially a chronic illness (heart condition, asthma, etc.) or an immunosuppression illness then it is my strongest advice that THEY SHOULD NOT COME TO SCHOOL. I am of the opinion that schools in Sydney will eventually have to be closed. My advice is that you start to prepare for this. These are certainly worrying times. I know that many of you are worried, particularly in regards to the health of your older relatives. We will get through this, but I am afraid we are in for a tough winter. I am reminded of the stories my father told me about WW2 and the Great Depression. In those terrible times Australians stood together and overcame both terrible events. We will do so again. I wish you all the best. Stay safe. Brett Moseley Principal

Road Closures

Fulton Hogan will be undertaking construction work around the school. The following streets will be affected as per the letter drops. When they are working on Bardia Avenue, they will be doing a full closure of that road during the work. The detour diagram attached shows the different alternative routes to take once the closure is in place.
