well-known that in the medieval Europe only the Christian clergy – and a good number of Jews – were literate. That's why monarchs were so heavily dependent on their clerics, and helps to explain, in part why Jews were so resented. But when did Jewish literacy gets a kickstart? I theorize that it happened in Babylonian exile. Our Kohanim, who heretofore held the written Torah and the oral traditions close to their vestments, had noth-ing better to do than to teach their fellow exiles what they knew. Knowledge is power, and this was the beginning of enfranchising and democratizing Juda-ism. When Ezra returns to Judea with the Edict of Cyrus, he formalizes this tendency: he erects a plat-form from which he publicly reads the Torah to all the people who assembled in Jerusalem. A few cen-turies later, Rabbi Shimon ben Shetach, the brother of Queen Salome Alexandra (you can read about her in Judy Petsonk's book, Queen of the Jews), founded schools in all the large cities for the formal educa-tion of Jewish children. Amazingly, we are talking about the year 70 B.C.E.! With this kind of an ancient and established track record, it's no wonder that Mohammed called us The People of the Book.
Many rabbis – I among them – la-ment the fact that Shavuot, which celebrates the beginning of God's revelation and therefore is founda-tional to every other holiday and all of our observances, is “calendrically-challenged”, coming as it does at the end of the school and program-matic year and lasting only two days.
But I think I just found the silver lining in Shavuot fall-ing in May or June. It's tied into the program we held here on erev Shavuot that was brought to us from Con-gregation Sons of Israel. They call it People of the Book, and I refer to it informally as BYOB—Bring Your Own Book. (When it was my turn, I pulled both a book and a bottle out of the bag I had with me). Most of us use the slower days of summer as a time to catch up on reading, or we at least make a list of the books that we would like to read. In this regard, our People of the Book program, and the list that it generat-ed (which you will find below) couldn't have been better timed! By way of introduction to our reviews on Shavuot, I spoke briefly about literacy in our tradition. It is fairly

WITH GRATITUDE We had a great time on Sunday evening, May 19th at our Dinner Dance celebration. It was wonderful to see the warmth, friendship, enthusiasm, joy and happiness that was evident on everyone’s face. I want you to know how gratified I was with the outpouring of good
wishes from all of you. I especially want to thank the Dinner Dance committee. All their hard work enhanced the success of the evening. A special Yeasher Kochachem to all of them. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Our Siddur is full of David’s Psalms, expressing the soul’s yearning for unity with God through poetry and song.

Hebrew School News Cory Chargo
Director of Education
When I teach children…I am offering them information. Maybe they will take it in…maybe they will not. If I cram it down their throats…then they will truly not learn and in fact roadblocks to future learning may develop. This year in the Hebrew School, thanks to initiative of our new Education Chair, Ronit Slotky, we have striven to make The JCC of Fort Lee a fun place for our families. Opening up the Gym for refreshments and sports has provided a low-key place for our families. There was not a week where we didn’t have a number of participants. The principal of “Love thy Neighbor as Thyself”…a key moral teaching from the Torah is prominent in Star Trek. No matter how ugly one species of aliens are to another, no matter how culturally different they may be, it is essential to all episodes that respect for differences be maintained always. Always treat the aliens in such a way that they know that you respect their rights and self-determination. Even the idea of when to go to war…a topic we discussed heavily this year in our Ethics class with our 6/7th graders is prominent in Star Trek. In all Star Trek episodes it is morally wrong to be an aggressor in war or violence. Only when attacked can we defend ourselves. This is a primary principle in Judaism and certainly one employed by the Israeli Defense Force. I think what I glean most from Star Trek, even more than the great costume ideas for those Masquerade balls, is the idea of hope. That there will be a time where there is no more war. There will be a time when currency and greed and hatred between people will become obsolete. This idea of hope, of Tikvah is what I hope that all of our children in the Hebrew School will take away from Gesher Shalom. Beam me up….
I’m going to share something about myself…that may come as a surprise. I’m a Trekkie! Yup…Captain Kirk, Spock, Jean-Luc Picard, Data….and the lot. In addition to thinking about those who perished in our military—yes the true meaning behind Memorial Day—this weekend I plan on seeing the new Star Trek movie. Not just in the theaters. Not even in just 3-D with those mildly odd black Buddy Holly glasses. But in an IMAX theater! True confession: When I was a BBYO Director in Atlanta in the 1990’s….I “accidently” planned a BBYO youth convention for over 200 teenagers at a very nice Atlanta Hotel. Was it my fault that there just happened to be a Star Trek conventions taking place in the same hotel?????? Although I did not dress up with Vulcan pointy ears, unlike 99% of the actual Star Trek convention attendees, I did indulge in a special BBYO convention T-Shirt that was…shall I say “out of this world”. Now that I’ve experienced this cathartic moment that I’m sure will cure all of my various neuroses, I’d like to offer some…Jewish justification…beyond the fact that the Vulcan four finger greeting replicates the one used by the Cohanim in their blessing. In fact…I used excerpts from old Star Trek episodes one year as a the basis of minimally 25 weeks of classes in a Religious School. Star Trek offers hope, morality, ethics, respect, and even dabbles in discussing God and the qualities of the divine. The ‘prime directive’ in all of the Star Trek series is to allow people…cultures to develop on their own and to not interfere with their natural progression. To me that is pure Kavod…respect. True Kavod is respecting people…no matter what their age and accepting who they are. By the way, and when I studied Social Work, one of the primary ethical principles presented to us was “meet the client where they are at”. In other words do NOT impose our own values on others.

As another Sisterhood year draws to a close (our 50th + years) I would be remiss if I did not express my endless gratitude an heartfelt appreciation to our Executive Board. For all their hard-work, co-operation, friendship and patience, they are a con-stant amazement to me. Thank you one and all. “June is busting out all over” and it is time to di-rect our attention towards next year’s calendar. If you have any ideas or suggestions please let us know. For now, we wish one and all a relaxing, healthy summer.
