Bharat Bhavan was established in 1982 as a cultural complex to promote creative and performing arts. It enjoys

a significant place among the national institutes of India. The center was planned by the notable architect Charles

Correa. The architectural plan of the cultural complex is very unique and innovative with a number of low

buildings constructed around the banks of the lake. Bharat Bhavan is situated in Shamla hills, which is on the

banks of a lake. It is one of the most well known centers in India involved in the conservation of traditional folk

culture and art. To promote and preserve Indian art and literature a number of museum are built in the complex

which are as follows:

Rupankar is the museum of art, which exhibits the present-day folk, urban and art of aboriginals. It also has a

workshop for metal casting, ceramic, litho and stone craft.

Vagartha is a center of Indian poetry. The center offers a good platform to the upcoming and also established

writers who can interact through translation, recitation, lecture and publication. The center has a vast collection of

ancient and contemporary poetry.

Rangmandal is the theatre repertory of the complex, where many plays and stage shows are organized. It has a

library well stacked with books and a play museum.

Anhad is a beautiful hall for classical music and folk music, where some of the well-known musicians have

performed.

You can visit Bharat Bhavan between 10.30 am to 5.00 pm. It is closed on Sundays and government holidays.

This cultural centre is a serene place to take in modern Indian art, tribal carvings and paintings, a library and

private contemporary art galleries. There is a cafe, and regular evening performances (7pm) of poetry, music and

theatre.
