There are two car park levels and a student car park at the Mahers Lane campus. For the safety of your children and others please follow these guidelines.

Before and after school the lower car park level is used for buses only. Parents, please do not park in or drive through this level before or after school – use the top level car park. With approximately twelve buses driving through this area of a

morning and afternoon, this should decrease the congestion.

The top car park level (where the shelter with seating is located) is designed as the student drop off and pick

up area. To avoid congestion in this area we ask the following:

• Parents are to move as far along the top pick up area as possible.

• Do not stop on the crossing or in the middle of the road – move to one side

• Do not stop or park in the allocated disabled car park

The car park on the adjoining block is for senior students’ parking. In the afternoon parents are often parking in this area to pick up their children at the same time as our senior students are trying to leave. We are concerned with the number of younger students running behind vehicles that are reversing. The correct pick up area is in the top driveway of the main school block.

Another area of concern is Mahers Lane itself. Please do not double park to collect students or do a U–turn across the double lines. For the safety of all please collect students from the top driveway.

Lindisfarne Ski Trip

Forty five keen students and five equally keen teachers left at 4:00pm on Saturday 11 July for the long bus ride to Jindabyne. We reached the snow ready for an afternoon ski on Sunday. The following days consisted of a 6:00am wake up call, thirty minute bus trip to the snow, a two hour lesson and the rest of the day skiing and boarding. After what looked a poor start to the season, we were fortunate that it started to snow the day before we left Lindisfarne. We experienced good conditions with it snowing enough most nights that we needed to fit chains to the bus each day. Thanks to the staff (Mrs Wright, Mr Leach, Mr Robins, Ms Spring, Mr Fydler) and the students involved in making the trip enjoyable and memorable for all.

Noelene Wright, Head of Secondary

HSIE FacultyYears 9 and 10 Commerce 2015 Money Stuff Challenge

Our Commerce students are developing creative and innovative presentations that could appear on the NSW Government Department of Fair Trading’s Money Stuff website. During this process, they have been fine tuning their financial literacy skills and learning how best to avoid the pitfalls of being a modern consumer. They have used this knowledge to consider relevant consumer behaviour by selecting a fair trading issue, identifying a clear message and developing it into a creative and innovative presentation that appeals to their classmates and peers. Most students have chosen to create a short two minute film or a website. Competition entries are due Friday 31 July 2015. For more information about what your child is producing, go to: http://www.moneystuff.net.au/golive/moneystuffcompetition.page

Years 7-12 ASX Schools Sharemarket Game

The Years 9 and 10 Commerce students will be competing individually in the ASX Schools Sharemarket Game as part of their Personal Finance and Investing unit of study. They receive a virtual $50,000 that they can invest over a ten week period from 20 August to 28 August 2015. There are two hundred companies listed on the ASX. Students are able to buy and sell shares at the same price as the real share market. This provides students with “real life” experiences – as close to real life trading as they can get. This is a competition measured at school and national level with big prizes available at national level. For more information about

the game please go to: https://game.asx.com.au/game/info/school/about-the-game

“We will remember them”

Korean War 1950-1953“You came to an unknown land to preserve peace and freedom. We remember your gallantry and sacrifice.”

Recently, Year 12 student Yasmine Sutcliffe and teacher Mr Coverdale, joined with Korean War veteran Mr Alan Beck and family at the Korean Society of Gold Coast Commemorative Service and luncheon, marking sixty five years since the commencement of the Korean War on 25 June, 1950. The Consul-General of Korea, in delivering his address and toast to the Australian veterans, expressed the deep gratitude and strong bond of the Korean people with Australia. “Korea is now a prosperous country due to your service and sacrifice” he said.

From January 1951, Mr Beck, as a twenty year old aircraft mechanic, commenced seventeen months service in Korea with the Royal Australian Air Force 77 Squadron and Transport Division.

Yasmine participated in the April 2014 NSW Premier’s ANZAC Memorial Scholarship to Korea visiting places of significant campaigns and sites of commemoration.

The Korean War Armistice was signed on 27 July 1953. Over seventeen thousand Australians served during the Korean War, three hundred and forty were killed, twenty nine taken prisoner and over one thousand five hundred wounded.

We thank the Korean Society of Gold Coast for their warm welcome and hospitality at this Commemorative Service.Photo above: L-R Teacher Mr Bryson Coverdale, Korean War veteran Mr Alan Beck and ANZAC Scholar Yasmine Sutcliffe at the recent Korean Society of Gold Coast Commemorative Service.Photo top: “Thank-you Australia and Korea Veterans for the Freedom and Peace of Australia”.

Kokoda Challenge Youth Program

Five students, Eirene Donnelly, Jack Jones, Tiffani Seaton, Mia Tarantini and Jade Wardle, took part in the ninety six kilometre Kokoda Challenge through the Gold Coast hinterland on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 July 2015. In the thirty-two hours it took the team to complete the challenge, the students travelled across twelve creeks, up summits of five thousand metres in elevation and along fire trails throughout the mountainous region.

They had to dig deep and find strength that they never knew they had to make it through the challenge. Everyone is extremely proud of these five young people and we wanted to congratulate them on their wonderful achievement.

Sports NewsCongratulations to:

EquestrianWhat a great time Kristy Byrne and Azalea Sattler had at the School tour of QSEC.

Here they are pictured (with their mums) with International and Olympic candidate dressage rider Lisa Martin. The girls learnt all about the vet checks, passport checks, stable allocation, training and watched several stars in action. The mums even came to a riders’ rescue with safety pins.
