Balsa Bridge Competition Overview The Balsa Bridge Competition offers participating teams the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge of structural design principles in the construction of a three-dimensional balsa bridge structure. Students will design and build a bridge structure using specified balsa wood. The structure will be weighed and judged and then loaded until failure. Objective The objective of this competition is to design and build a 3-D bridge structure conforming to specific criteria. The model will be tested via a loading platform placed on the deck of the structure. The load will be increased with respect to time until failure occurs by the fracture of a member or a joint. Points will be awarded for the strength to weight ratio of the bridge and for the quality of the technical paper. Eligibility Each team may consist of up to four (4) students, one (1) of whom may be a graduate student. Each team will have one (1) captain, who will submit the bridge and a hard copy of the technical report during registration. One (1) structure per university will be allowed. All competing bridges must meet all design specifications. Failure to meet any requirement will result in a deduction of points or disqualification. Submittals All technical papers and bridge structures must be submitted with the registration of the team captain upon arrival at the conference. Each bridge must have the name of the university printed in permanent black ink along the length of one (1) or more of the bridge members. Materials Wood Only balsa members of A, B, or C grain types may be used. Dry density of balsa members may not exceed 15lbs/ft 3 . No specialized or treated balsa wood, basswood, or other types of wood are allowed. The nominal cross section of all members must be .25 in x .25 in ± .025 in. Structural members may not extend below the plane created by the loading deck.

abletopassthroughthebridgeacrossthebridgespan.Nodeckingsurfaceisrequired,simplyanopeningthatcanaccommodatetheblock,approximatelylevelwithspansupports.

o Thedeckofthebridgeisunderstoodtobeaplanarsurfacespanningtheentirelength.

o Numberofstructuralmembersintersectingatasinglejointmaynotexceedsix.o Allbridgestructuresmustaccommodatea1”x1”x9”barplaced

perpendicularlyonthecenterofthedeckspacefromwhichtheloadwillbeapplied.(SeeFigures1&2).

TestingTheorderoftestingwillbedeterminedbythejudges,andteamswillbenotifiedinadvanceoftestingorder.Theteamcaptainmustbepresentatthetimeoftesting;otherteammembersarenotrequiredbutmayattend.Theteamcaptainwillplacethebridgeacrossthe24”supportspan.Afterthebridgeisplacedonthespan,noadjustmentsmaybemadetothestructure.

Loadingwillbesuspendedbelowthebridge.Thesupportmechanismconsistsofanironbarwithdimensions1”x1”x9”thatwillbeplacedperpendicularlytothedecksurface.Chainswillbehungfromtheendsofthisbar.Abucketwillbesuspendedfromthechains.Bridgeswillbeloadeduntilfailurebyfillingthebucketwithsand.Therateofloadingwillbereducedatvisibledeformationorcrackingtoensuretheweightatcatastrophicfailureisexactlyrecorded.

JudgingTherewillbeaminimumofthree(3)judgesforthecompetition.Itwillbethejudges’dutyandresponsibilitytoevaluatetheteamsfairlyandconsistently.TheteamswillbeevaluatedbasedonthecriteriaoutlinedintheScoringsectionincludedbelow.Thejudges’rulingwillbefinalforallcompetitors.TechnicalPaperThetechnicalpapershallbe750-1000wordsinlengthandconsistof:

1. Introductiona. NameofUniversityb. Namesofteammembersc. Captainnameandcontactinformation

2. Documentationa. Allmaterialsusedforconstructionofbridge,including:

i. Balsawood,includingacountofallvertical,horizontal,andinclinemembers

ii. Thenameofadhesiveproductusedb. Purchaselocationofallmaterials,includingphotocopiesofreceiptsof

purchase.

c. AllCADfiguresshallbesubmittedwiththetechnicalreporton8.5”x11”sheets.

ScoringScoresforthetechnicalpaperwillbebaseduponorganization,completeness,accuracy,andadherencetoallrequirements.Ascoringsummaryisprovidedonthefollowingpage.Aloadingcapacityscorewillbedeterminedbytheultimateloadcapacity(lbs)dividedbytheweight(grams)totwodecimalplaces.Thisvaluewillbemultipliedbyten(10)todeterminethetotalpointsawarded.Theteamwiththehighesttotalscorewillwinthecompetition,receivingthefullseven(7)pointsintheoverallscorebreakdownfortheconference.Intheeventofatie,thejudgesshallchoosethewinnerbasedonqualityofconstructionandaesthetics,whichshallbejudgedbeforeloadingbegins.
