OVERVIEWAustralian Pipeline Valve manufacture severe and critical service ball valves. Valves can be manufactured in class IV, V and VI shut off as well as API 598 and MSS-SP61. Special resilient and metal seated high performance ball valves with ‘cam action seats’ are also available. This seat design lifts off the ball/disc during opening and closing to avoid seat damage. The design also protects the seat from high velocity and abrasion damage during initial opening. Trunnion Mounted Ball Valves designed for abrasive service, feature a metal to metal sealing between the ball and seat rings, while the sealing between the seat and the seat housing shoulders is achieved by means of o-rings, graphite gaskets or lip seal o-rings or bellows seals depending on service conditions.

The ball and the seat rings are hard-faced using different coating mediums such as Electro-less Nickel, Chrome Carbide, Tungsten Carbide, Chromium Carbide and Stellite depending on media, temperature & service to be handled. A specially designed seat ring avoids the inclusion of sand or other debris in the spring recess.

Special flushing systems for the seat pocket area are available on request for valves to be used in extremely “dirty” services. Valves can be bi-directional or uni-directional

MATE LAPPINGProprietary mate-lapping is available which produces the tightest, most reliable seal available. All metal seated ball valves rely on continuous, unbroken contact between the ball and metal seat to create an isolating seal. 360° mate-lapping of the entire ball and seat produces optimal roundness, producing 100% ball to seat contact, regardless of the positioning. Traditional cup-lapping methods mate only the sealing band of the ball to seat surfaces creating ridges that distort the balls roundness and compromise the coating thickness. The sealing “sweet spot” is much smaller and a leak path may develop if even slightly misaligned resulting in reduced valve life, more maintenance and higher actuation costs.

1. Durability The metal contact mechanism between ball and seat is ensured by spring energised seat and provides long life.

2. Half opening control The metal mechanism enables the possibility of half opening the valve to control flow. Consult us, as options like V-Port may need to be considered. Also extreme wear through cavitation can occur when valve is in half open position.

3. Low torque operation Small friction coefficient between ball and seat, and spring energised seats make manual operation easy.

Since leather was combined with timber to improve the bow, composite solutions have provided solutions for demanding applications. Yet when it comes to trunnion ball valve seats, most manufacturers only offer a single seat insert solution which is easily damaged. Service considerations include temperature, media type, pressure etc. In the end materials like Nylon, Devlon & PEEK® are a compromise that must serve many masters. Hard seat inserts have no resilience or memory for indentations and can have trouble sealing at very low pressures. In addition, these materials increase the valves torque and reduce the temperature range.

APV offers double & triple seating solutions utilising metal, teflon, hard Viton, Devlon etc. In addition we can supply special ‘cam action’ axial lift seats that lift off during opening & closing protecting the seat from high velocity & abrasive damage.

Seat types include:-

A-PMSS®-PRIMARY METAL SECONDARY SEALThis design provides ‘metal to metal’ class IV or V shut off in addition to API598 zero leakage provided by a resilient seat insert. This is a conventional seating design but APV optionally reduces the standard metal to metal tolerances for drip tight or bubble tight applications.

A-PMSS+S®-PRIMARY METAL SECONDARY SEAL + SCRAPERThe A-PMSS+S® design is the same as the PMSS® above except for the addition of a scraper. On conventional trunnion ball valve seating systems, APV offers the PR-A-PMSS+S® seat design option (8” and above). A protective scraper ring is inserted in front of the soft seat insert to remove solid particles, dirt or debris that could damage or clog the contact area between ball and soft seat insert ring. This feature assures that the working area of the seat will be clean allowing the seats to work effectively.This design prolongs seat life whilst only minimally increasing cost and is particuarly advantageous for valves that cannot be removed from the line for repair such as buttweld valves, welded body valves, buried service valves as well as known non clean service applications.

A-DRS®-DOUBLE RESILIENT SEALThis design marries teflon or an elastomeric seal such as hard viton which has excellent memory providing indentation resilience with Devlon, Nylon or PEEK® which handle higher pressures but are also more scratch resistant. Even with this system there is still primary metal to metal seating but it is not mate lapped like in the PMSS® Seat.

A-TRS®-TRIPLE RESILIENT SEALIn addition to Double Resilient Seal® a third hardened Viton resilient seal is added which has more resilience to indentation & ensures a bubble tight seal even at very low pressures. This third seal will still also handle high pressures even if the other two seals fail. Many manufacturers use this as their only seal.

The above systems are ideal for applications that require redundant sealing and where access to repair the valve is not feasible. Lower torque and lower shut off pressures are additional advantages of this design.

In summary, these seating systems provide a much longer leak free life at a lower cost compared to metal to metal seated ball valves and can supplied in quicker delivery. These seating systems offer the additional advantages of lower torque as well as high and very low pressure sealing assurance.

APV can also hard coat and treat ball and/or seat with low friction sinterised coatings to reduce friction coefficient and solve wedging problems.

The APV Rising Stem Trunnion Mounted Ball Valve design provides true friction free operation.The valve features a mechanically set sealing feature that provides a bubble tight shutoff against liquids and gases. There is no pinch point effect to wiredraw seats or core face. The valve is designed to be inherently fi resafe and incorporates an anti-blowout stem feature. The OR-B150 valve is suitable for use in petrochemical industries, liquifi ed petroleum gas storage, refi nery, natural gas, compressor system, oil and gas transportation pipelines, light industry and other industries.

FEATURES1. Stem packing design reduces emissions through bonnet.

Packing is injectable while valve is in-line.

2. In-line repairable. Top entry design provides easy repair after shutting off fl ow.

3. Springs which will weaken with use, are not required for sealing.

4. Mechanically energised tight seal, non lubricated, differential pressure not required for sealing, single seat design means no need for thermal relief.

5. Perpendicular movement of ball away from seat allows immediate full fl ow, preventing uneven erosion or abrasion of seat or ball. Also provides low torque.

6. Firesafe combination of metal and soft seat.

7. No cavity to trap product.

8. Wedge type sealing tapers at bottom of stem provide a mechanically energised and adjustable dead-tight seal at all pressure ranges. Wear resistant hard ball provides long life.

Special services easily accommodated i.e. high temperature, H2S service, low temperature etc.

APPLICATIONS

Used for scrapers launching / receiving (Pigs) in pipelines for gas, oil, etc.They also can be used for solids in the form of powder, viscous liquids(cellulose).

BENEFITS

In most cases they eliminate the need for launching / receiving stations.Allow the use of different types of Pigs.Depending on the installation, the same type of valve can serve as scraper launching or receiving.

DESIGN

Designed using the same basic structure as APV’s traditional block andbleed ball valve.

Two styles:- by pass at the insertion and the evacuation of the scraper, the fl uid can still fl ow through the pipe- shut off at the insertion and the evacuation of the scraper pig.

The launching valve has full through conduit fl ow, no pockets to trap wax or debris. After closing the launching valve, vent body cavity pressure, then insert the pig and complete steps 4 & 5.The shut off valve contains a perforated heavy screen to launch the pig whilst allowing fl ow.

DESIGN BV100-QF

In conjunction with the European designer and patent holder, the proven Extremely Low Torque (ELT) ball valve is available as a simple option on APV valves. This design breaks the traditional ratio between the valve sealing force and the resulting valve operating torque. High sealing reliability and long lifespan are achieved whilst having an extremely low operating torque. Whilst the BVF100-QF valve is not marketed for dirty service, any impurities that may damage the soft seat will not effect the seat during opening or closing as is the case with conventional trunnion ball valves. For dirty service we recommend BVF100-EV design variation detailed below.

TECHNICAL FEATURES BV100-QF

Based on the design of a BVF100 trunnion mounted ball valve, the BVF100-QF utilises the existing proven conventional double piston effect self relieving seat design. A check valve is opened through a push pin upon rotating the stem to open & close. The original sealing force is diverted to push the seat away from the ball (only during opening or closing) by using the fluid pressure of the internal pipe line acting upon the piston action seat (utilising the existing automatic overpressure seat release feature.) The seat is separated from the ball during the opening and closing process ensuring extremely low torque, zero leakage and long lifespan. The seat spring tightness can be greater than a traditional trunnion ball valve when the ball is full open or closed provides superior sealing.

CAM ACTION OPTION BVF100-QF-EV

Another design variation for dirty & abrasive service is the cam action seat design. The BVF100-EV cam action design offers the same advantages as the BVF100-QF but is more suitable for dirty service as it does not rely on fluid diversion behind the seat. Instead it employs a cam action seat which lifts off ball during opening and closing to avoid seat damage. The design also pro-tects the seat from high velocity and abrasion damage during initial opening. Composite triple seats can also be supplied with nylon/teflon/metal.This valve is a superior alternative for dirty & abrasive service applications.to a slurry valve or a full port plug valve. The cam action ‘axial lift off’ seat means this valve has all the advantages for dirty & abrasive service applications of a metal seated ball valve but without the disadvantages. As the valve turns the unique seat lifts off the ball during the turning motion whilst opening and closing. This reduces torque and prevents seat/ball damage. The cam action seat design prevents jamming and significantly increases the life of the valve. These metal seated valves are supplied to API 598 or ANSI class IV shut off only (class V and VI on request). Importantly the seat design enables the valves to continue to close off to class IV, even after continued use in abrasive or dirty service applications. This style of valve also offers the advantages of being compact and fast acting quarter turn design. Further advantages are gained in automated applications as quarter turn actuators are more competitive than linear actuators as used in rising stem ball valves and of course a lower torque enables the use of a smaller actuator. This style of ball valve is suited to min-ing, slurry and other abrasive service applications where particulates in the media represent a problem for traditional valves.

MAJOR COMPONENTS

• Triple life span:- The ball and seat are separated during the closing and opening process so there is no contact with the sealing surface which damages the seat in traditional valves so that the lifespan of the seat has been prolonged with triple of the traditional.

• Lower actuator cost: The ELT ball valve torque is 95% lower. The cost of an actuator is massively lower.

• Lower installation and maintenance cost:- Because the ELT ball valve has a low operating torque, this ensures excellent sealing performance and long lifespan. The smaller sized actuator largely reduces the installation space and makes the valve more reliable. The operation, maintenance costs and maintenance difficulty are greatly reduced.

• Stronger seal pressure when full open or closed (as seat springs can be tighter without affecting open/close torque.)

DESIGN FEATURES

The RG series is radically different to conventional ball valves and was specifi cally developed to operate under harsh conditions such as abrasive fl uids and high differential isolation. Yet unlike ‘metal to metal’ seat ball valves the RG series has a replaceable soft seat insert for bubble tight shut off with lower purchase and maintenance coststhan metal to metal seat ball valves. In addition this valve can be easily serviced in the fi eld and is less prone to malfunctioning under dirty service conditions.

The non-spherical core which acts only as a carrier of soft seats, eliminates problems encountered with conventional ball valves such as the seats being in constant contact with the polished sphere which tends to cause leakage due to scouring and erosion during opening and closing.

Australian Pipeline Valve don’t consider in our design the following factors of risk:

1. Australian Pipeline Valve ‘Standard’ ball valves can be used in a temperature range between -28.8°C to +250°C. For service temperatures below -28.8°C ball valve construction materials shall be submitted to an impact test at the minimum service temperature. For temperatures between -28.8°C & +250°C ball valves have to be provided with seats & seals able to withstand the temperature degree required. 2. The onus is on the customer to specify all materials of construction and service conditions. Australian Pipeline Valve shall assume standard materials and conditions if not otherwise specified.

3. Australian Pipeline Valve ‘Standard’ ball valves are not equipped with devices suitable to avoid internal over-pressures caused by incorrect operations of process or by-fluids & liquids subjected to an increase of volume and/or pressure (these devices, such as the over-pressure hole in the ball or safety seats are available upon request).

4. Australian Pipeline Valve ‘Standard’ ball valves are not designed with special devices to withstand a sudden thermal jump (thermal shock).

5. In general Australian Pipeline Valve ‘Standard’ ball valves are not mechanically designed to bear overloads due to exceptional atmospheric or natural phenomenon’s (such as earthquakes).

6. In general Australian Pipeline Valve ‘Standard’ ball valves are not designed to bear loads on flanges, on pipe connections or pipeline.

7. In general Australian Pipeline Valve ‘Standard’ ball valves can’t withstand ice inside their bodies (in this case user has to consider the optional stem extension for insulating, avoiding the presence of residual product inside the valve).

8. APV ‘Standard’ ball valves are suitable for low temperature service (up to -196°C) when provided with cryogenic stem extension and other modifications (available on request).

9. Australian Pipeline Valve ‘Standard’ ball valves are suitable for ‘industrial’ oxygen (not medical) service when supplied degreased and packed in polyethylene bags only.

10. The compatibility between ball valves construction materials and medium is selected by the user. The user is ultimately responsible for verifying the compatibility between medium and materials.

11. Abrasive or dirty service, vacuum service, high temperature service, low temperature service, near zero pressure service and other special applications should be clearly stated when requesting quotation.

BALL VALVE START-UP

Before installing the ball valve onto the pipe-line it is mandatory for the user to verify the compatibility of the ball valve with service conditions (medium, temperature and pressure). With reference to standard ball valves held in stock, the reseller and end user will have to assure themselves of the compatibility with the use of conditions required by the customer. Australian Pipeline Valve ball valves must be only used for on-off (fully open/fully closed) service.

Before using the ball valve in a potential explosive atmosphere it’s necessary to: -

• To verify the compatibility between the ball valve and the zone in which the ball valve should be installed.• To consider the pipe-line ground condition on which the ball valve should be installed.• To check that the temperature if the ball valve surface is not higher than the flammable point of the atmosphere in which the ball valve is installed (in this case specify an insulating cover device for the valve and an extension for the wrench).• Before installing ball valves with welding ends make sure that the process of welding is carried out in accordance with all the safety requirements of the classified zone.• To avoid mechanical knocks during the installation that may cause sparks.
