The leader of the fresh snacks in the Egyptian market as well as providing other bakery products" Al-Faysal, one of the main players in Croissant and Pate market, has been recently acquired by Modern Bakeries. Al-Faysal was re-launched last summer August 2006 with the brand name Brunch. Now Brunch is the leader in the short shelf life croissant and pate. It produces 5 days shelf life filled croissants, pate, pizza and Danish. Concentrating on croissant and pate Brunch croissant is filled with chocolate and strawberry while pate is filled with chocolate and white cheese. Hence we are the only player in the market now that have sour filling (cheese). Brunch products are widely spread through out the market especially concentrated in kiosks. Brunch is always focusing on providing its consumers with new products and innovative filling and recipes. Brunch is also planning in the near future to extend its range in the Bakery product sector

About : BiscoMisr was established in 1957 during Egypt’s nationalization program as the Egyptian Company for Foods which has been the country’s main provider of baked goods and confectionary at that time. The company was established with the purpose of supplying the army and the national schools at the time, providing a quick energy snack for the soldiers in the barracks as well as the school children on the playground. At the same time, BiscoMisr was the main confectionery supplier for the local market. BiscoMisr has taken a new look with the handover of the company’s management from the public sector to the private sector at the height of the revived privatization program in 2005. Since then, the company and its avid fans have seen a total makeover of BiscoMisr’s name. Today, BiscomMisr, is one of the leading companies in the country and has always been available in the market for more than 50 years now. The company was put up for partial sale in 1999 when the privatization process was on a roll. The private investor bought a stake in the company but did not take an active management at the time. • At the lower end of the market, Euromonitor International highlights the importance of baked food staples such as bread – heavily subsidised in most African and Middle Eastern countries - in the day-to-day diets of consumers.
• On the other hand, health and premiumisation are making strides among middle and upper-class consumers, underpinning demand for high added-value products in urban areas.

• Reduction in state subsidies slows growth of baked goods in Egypt
• Retail volume sales of baked goods in Egypt are projected to grow by 1% in 2010, almost half a percentage point down on the previous year. This moderate slowdown in growth is partly down to a reduction in government subsidies to food manufacturers, which opted for passing on the increase in costs to consumers.
• While cakes and pastries remain highly popular in the Egyptian market, bread will continue to account for the vast majority of baked goods sales (99% of total retail volume in 2010).
• The reason for this is the fact that Egyptians eat bread at most meals. Typical Egyptian breakfasts, for instance, are eaten with bread. Local dishes 'Fool' (fava beans) and 'taameya' (falafel) are extremely popular among lower-income earners and are consumed on a daily basis with at least one loaf of bread.
• Furthermore, bread is consumed by most low disposable income Egyptians. This is because the Egyptian government ensures the supply of affordable bread to lower earners in order to maintain social stability.
• Single portion cakes dominate sales of packaged/industrial cakes, which are predicted to account for over 82% of value sales in 2010. However, sales of multi-portion cakes are rising, reaching a value share of over 17% of packaged/industrial cakes in 2010 as these products are popular among working mothers due to their busy lifestyles.

• Arguably the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region’s most dynamic food and drink long-term growth market, Egypt continues to attract significant multinational interest with both Gulf and Western firms continuing to significantly step up investment.
• Benefiting from MENA’s largest population and the most attractive trade links to non-regional markets, Egypt is likely to continue attracting major investment in 2010 as discussed in our recently published Egypt Food & Drink Report for Q210.
• One of the quarter’s most significant developments was the announcement that US agricultural giant Cargill had been granted permission to build a US$120mn sugar refining plant in Egypt with an annual production capacity of about 600,000 tonnes. The Egyptian government is actively encouraging domestic sugar production to try and tighten the sugar trade net deficit – estimated to have been 0.919 mn tonnes in FY09.
• Although modest headline sugar consumption growth of 4.9% to 2.74mn tonnes is forecast to 2014, at about 35 kilograms per capita annually, Egypt is already one of the world’s highest sugar consumers. Cargill joins Gulf powerhouses such as Saudi Arabia’s Savola and the UAE’s Al Khaleej Sugar in pursuing significant expansion in Egypt.
• Underlining Egypt’s strengthening importance as a major emerging market opportunity, HJ Heinz Company assumed full control of its Egyptian unit Cairo Food Industries (CFI) after buying up the outstanding 49% stake from its joint venture partner Americana Group for an unrevealed sum. While the wave of investment into food and drink is being led by foreign companies, Egyptian companies have also been busy trying to raise capital to pursue expansion in lieu of the opportunities likely to accrue to companies with strong brand presence across a variety of price segments. Egyptian diversified food giant Ajwa Food Industries is one of the companies taking a lead on this front. It was expected to launch a EGP999mn (US$182.41mn) rights issue by the end of March 2010 in preparation for financing a major wave of expansion.
• Core food industry sub-segments such as edible oils, whose growth prospects are strongly correlated to how the wider food industry performs due to the important role edible oils play in food preparation, will have a lot to gain from a forecast average annual headline food consumption growth of 6.84% in Egypt between 2010 and 2014

• Executive summary • Value sales of packaged food witness strong growth as prices continue to rise • Packaged food followed its recent trend of price hikes, further causing growth rates to remain high in value terms. Many companies are forced to
raise the unit prices of their end products as the price of raw materials also increased. Sugar, flour, etc. have all witnessed strong increases in prices, causing an upward trend on retail prices. However, it is important to mention that inflation has been relatively controlled over the last year of the review period compared with 2008. In 2009, inflation fell to reach 16% whereas it jumped from 9% to 18% from 2007 to 2008.
• Bakery products remains strongest • Bakery products have continued to lead in value sales in 2009, reaching E£25.7 billion, accounting for over half of total sales of packaged food. Bread
is considered a political commodity in Egypt and assures a continuous affordable supply for its poor. It is important to mention that during the severe shortage that occurred in Egypt's break market last year, “Former”President Hosny Mubarak ordered subsidies be given to all local bread producers in order to aid in bread production.
• Artisanal products lead the market with Savola Sime showing signs of growth • Artisanal products remain the most popular in the market for yet another consecutive year, with just under half of the market share. However,
Savola Sime Egypt Co has been actively pursuing the Egyptian market, raising its market share over the last couple of years of the review period, causing slight competition for artisanal products as the main advantage is low prices. Savola Sime Egypt Co is Saudi Arabia's largest food product company. It has been planning to build a sugar refinery in Egypt in order to meet increased demand for these products. Both its plants produce sugar by using beetroot in order to save on costs.
• Store-based selling remains most popular distribution channel • In 2009, store-based selling continued to dominate packaged foods sales: through grocery stores, independent retailers, and most importantly,
supermarkets/hypermarkets. There is a population drift in Cairo away from city centres towards new suburbs such as 6th of October City, Kattemeya Heights, 5th District, Rehab City, etc. where many supermarkets and hypermarkets have decided to open their doors to the public, capitalizing on these relocations.
• Expected decline in value growth of packaged food • Packaged food is expected to decline in value terms over the forecast period with a CAGR of -2% in constant terms. The reason for this may be due to
increased competition in the market as Savola Sime further distributes its products, forcing companies to keep their prices down. With real GDP growth declining from 7% to 6%, more people will be unable to spend as much money on these products and sacrifice certain products should their prices continue to increase. However, pasta and noodles are expected to witness strong value growth rates, indicating that people are willing to spend on more filling, cheap foods in times of economic crisis.
