Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club The M asthead Issue 10/10 - Volume 132 December 2017 I have previously shared our appreciation and thanks to all our committees and member volunteers because their hard work, commitment, dedication and attention to detail ensured the success of this busy schedule. To facilitate this active program, our staff met every challenge with enthusiasm, helping to make it all come together. Thank you all for a job well done. We are deeply indebted to all you for your commitment. Finally, I would like to acknowledge the BCYC Board of Directors, who accomplished so much this year for all of our benefit. We now have a Mission Statement and a Strategic Plan, which provides a blueprint for the future success of the club. More importantly, we now have a committee that is charged with making sure this document is kept active and modified to fit our changing times. The Board of Directors also approved a payment to reduce our mortgage and then implemented an investment program that will allow a far better return on the residual cash. I am so grateful for all their hard work, support and dedication to ensure our club is financially responsible and operates in the best interests of the entire membership. I will end this with an observation that I shared with many of you earlier this year: • We are a club that is inclusive as opposed to exclusive • We give because we can • We care for one another because that is who we are For Lynn and me, this was an experience of a lifetime and we now will be looking forward to our future BCYC sojourns. As I write my final article on our Commodore’s Cruise to the wine country in France, the word sojourn comes to mind because of its special meaning, defined as wonderful journey. For Lynn and me, that has been what this entire year has been, a wonderful journey filled with good times and lasting memories. On land, we traveled to the Sonoma Valley wine country for the Commodore’s Ball. Soon after, we were in The Big Easy (New Orleans) for Showboat 2017. Then James Bond paid us a visit in the LLS Gala, and if that was not enough, we were in Italy for Tuscany on the Terrace, replete with gondolas. Amazingly, all this happened without ever leaving our beautiful BCYC property. At sea, we began the journey land-locked in the desert, then cruised to Avalon, the Isthmus, enjoyed Camp Clambake at Cat Harbor, and then established a new tradition, traveling to Santa Barbara and the Channel Islands on our Adventure Cruise. Happy holidays and happy New Year.

New! Italian Dinner and Pasta Bar: January 7, 14, 21 and 28, BCYC will offer a new trial dining experience forSundayNightSuppers—a fabulousItalian dinner and pasta bar. A plated Italian entrée will be offered with a serve-yourself pasta and salad bar. The Columbia Room menu is always available on Sunday night as well. You will have the choice of both the entrée and pasta/salad bar starting at $25++. You can also choose only the pasta/salad bar with prices set at $18++ for adults and $12.95++ for kids 11 and under. Both options will include garlic bread and dessert.

New! Hamburger: BCYC has added a new hamburger to the Columbia Room menu. This burger will be served on a brioche bun and include a side of steak fries.

New! Wine and Cheese Tastings: This coming January will also see the start of a wine and cheese tasting on the second Thursday of each month after the Food and Beverage Committee meeting. You are welcome to attend the committee meeting or just come enjoy the tastings. Meetings begin at 6 p.m. and tastings will start at approximately 6:30 p.m. Eachmonth, we will try new wines offered at the club – a white and red – as well as some of our fabulous cheese and crackers. The cost to participate in the tastings will be $20 per person.

As we move into the new year, this committee will consider ‘lighter side’ items for inclusion on the Columbia Room menu. I welcome all comments and suggestions regarding food and beverage at BCYC. Feel free to contact me at [email protected].

Travel Team Wins Corinthian Cup

Junior Sailing DirectorCameron [email protected]

The 12th Annual Corinthian Cup took place at the end of October and marked the first time in the regatta’s history that a travel team won. As you may know, the Corinthian Cup not only rewards individual class winners, but also names an overall winning yacht club based on participation and performance. Clubs receive points for every sailor they bring, and those traveling from out of the Newport area get extra points.Once results are in, the topfivefinishers ineach fleet also receive performance points in addition to their participation points.

Thisyear, theweathercooperatedandprovidedanexcellentweekend of Sabot racing in the 6-10 knot breeze range. We’reproudtohavethreeofourownadvancingtothenextfleet: Cooper Blackband (1st, Sabot C1); Brooks Orradre (2nd, Sabot C1); and Piper Blackband (1st, Sabot C2). Congratulations to Long Beach Yacht Club for winning the Team High-Point Perpetual this year! Although it’s always more fun when BCYC wins, this changing of the tide is healthy for the regatta. The strong showing from LBYC, as well as Dana Point Yacht Club in the Tera class potentially givesothertravelteamstheincentivetomakethetripnextyear. We’re optimistic that we’ll see more clubs from the Long Beach and San Diego areas in attendance in the future.

With winter on the way, the West Coast Junior sailing scene is starting to heat up with more regattas, traveling and training ahead. During these winter months, California sailors tend to use this time to improve. Meanwhile, east coast kids can’t sail from November to March due to cold weather and frozen lakes. This is one of the many advantages to living in California.

I have been fortunate to be introduced to the match racing scene by a very talented sailor, Chris Nesbitt. About two months ago I decided to venture out of my comfort zone when Chris invited me to sail the United States Match Racing Championship qualifier, a grade 3 event, hosted by Long Beach Yacht Club. The grade of the event depends on the difficulty of the competition at the regatta, 1 being the hardestand5theeasiest.Forexample,theAmerica’sCupisa grade 1 event. The Long Beach regatta is also a qualifier for the Prince of Wales Regatta. Only the top finisher is awarded a spot in that regatta. Fortunately, we ended up winning the qualifier and qualified for the Prince of Wales event. Unfortunately, Chris’s work schedule prevented us from competing. More recently, I raced the Butler Cup, a grade 4 match race event at LBYC. With many hard-fought battles and close matches, we came away with the win.

This change of pace has been extremely beneficial tomysailing. The atmosphere is much more intense with boats colliding and protest flags flying constantly. Also, it has helped me in fleet racing, where I can be very calm in tense and stressful situations. In match racing there are only two boats on the course at once and you are trying to read the opponent’splan.Thisforcesyoutoplanoutyournextfourmoves and have a backup plan if one of the moves doesn’t go according to plan.

The biggest lesson of this journey: venture away from what you are used to, make new connections and incorporate what you have learned into all aspects of your life.

Thanks, It Was Fun

Las CommodorasBobbi [email protected]

Ahoy! As my tenure as Las Commodoras President draws to an end, I would like to give my heartfelt thanks to my fantastic, talented and gracious Board of Directors for all the love and hard work they put into every event this year. You are the best!

Many thanks to our General Manager, Scott Jones, Food and Beverage Manager, Bruce Fottrell, Chef Georges Rapicault and the entire BCYC staff for your professional and courteous service.

Thank you, Susie Brodrick and the club staff, for your dedication to Las Commodoras. Finally, to my husband, Port Captain, Mark Silvey, for doing everything I asked of you. I could not have done this without your support!

In closing, it is my honor, and great pleasure to turn the 2018 presidency over to Leslie Kazarian. A fantastic year is planned for all of us to enjoy. Please welcome her with open arms. The support of the BCYC membership and staff was greatly appreciated.

Port CaptainMark [email protected]

Ahoy. The 2017 Christmas Boat Parade is only a few days away and 2018 is here (almost)! The marina is 100% occupied and of course, maintenance is ongoing.

Between cruising guests and the Newport to Ensenada Race, plus the club Duffy, Membership, almost $20,000 in revenue was generated in 2017. Speaking of the Duffy, as of October, the seat cushions have been renewed, the motor has been serviced and the batteries replaced. She is scheduled for new bottom paint and other maintenance items in January.

To all BCYC marina boat owners: December is when many vessel registrationsexpire.BCYCmusthaveyourupdatedregistration or documentation and proof of insurance by end of January, 2018. If your vessel is documented, the documentation must be kept updated with the USCG. Since BCYC is an additional insured on your insurance policy, your insurance company can automatically send BCYC a copy upon each renewal. Please ask your insurance provider to do so. The club office needs your current documents on file – mail them in or hand deliver.

Winter is here and that means rain and winds. Please check your vessel’s lines and renew as needed, or if at all questionable. Lines should be a minimum of ½”, exceptDuffys, for the safety of your boat and the docks. The BCYC marina gets a lot of surge at times, being in the harbor entrance flow, and mooring lines break every year. Along with checking your lines, also check canvas, batteries, bilge pumps and that all windows are closed properly. It is time to winterize!

Please contact Susie Brodrick, waterfront manager, or myself for more information. I look forward to seeing you on the docks in 2018.

Two recent events at the club clearly demonstrate that there are many very good things going on at BCYC.

•A member of Seattle Yacht Club used the guest dockrecently as he was transiting from Seattle to Mexico. Itwas a Wednesday night, which he spent in the Columbia Room. This staff commodore from SYC said he has visited numerous yacht clubs over the years and he could count on one hand the number of clubs whose facilities were as well-maintained. He noted that it was obvious that members and staff enjoyed being at the club. He was particularly complimentary of our staff.

•InearlyNovember,BCYChostedthePCISASoCalregattathat involved 120 high school sailors and parents. Before leaving, three separate parents, at different times, asked for a facility tour and membership packet.

We have much to be proud of at our club and people notice.

The Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade runs Dec. 13-17. The marvelous buffet that is available each night suits this festive occasion. The boat parade passes by the club twice since the bridge leading on to Balboa Island is a little low for most of the boats to pass under! Therefore, we get to see the starboard and port side of each boat. For you veteran and novice boat paraders, this is a reminder – traffic is awful,

As I write this during the Veteran’s Day weekend, I am reminded of the different expressions of support for ourservicemembers.Oneexpressionof support, “Thankyoufor your service,” is fine, and welcome, but it pales in comparison to the other level of support that is frankly more meaningful.

The other level of support is one that runs in the blood of every member of BCYC, and is reflected in the family thatexistsinthisclub.ItfeelssomethinglikethelovethatI personally have for every Marine who I come in contact with. Over a lifetime of service in the Marine Corps, I have arrived at the point where I can intuitively pick out Marines from among people I see every day in the community. And when I see them, I am overcome with love for them, and the desire, built into my heart over so many years, to care for them whenever I have the chance.

Sometimes, when I think of this feeling, I wonder if there are others who feel the same way, or if I am just being sentimental. When I come to BCYC, and I meet the members of this club, I have my answer. I know this family feels the same and demonstrates that higher level of support for our Marines that reflects a love that runs in your veins.

This knowledge is what drove the Marines of our battalion to nominate the Home for Christmas Fund, and Dick Stone as its representative, for the DOD Spirit of Hope Award. The Spirit of Hope is named after Bob Hope and his lifetime of service with the USO, and is presented to the organization of each military service that represents a selfless dedication to our service members.

It’s never too early to talk CRUISE. The coming year looks to be fun and adventurous, by land and by sea.

The 2018 cruise tour schedule has been published, so darn it (can’t say dammit), have a look at it. The first journey takes us on the ever-popular Desert Land Cruise, Feb. 23-25, in beautiful Palm Desert. You can begin signing up for this cruise Dec. 8. Our BCYC group hotel will be the Miramonte Indian Wells Resort & Spa.

Activities will include putting, golf, swimming, biking and hiking. If none of these interest you, we’ve got Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club MED for you! That is Mingling, Eating and Drinking, because we’re all good at those activities.

The big question is, do you want to hear about the fun, or be part of the fun?

We’re moving our Angelman Series to the beginning of the year and changing the format to random leg, with more rounding marks.Expectmoresailchangesandcrewcoordination.Alsoexpectmoretrophiestobeawarded.Moreisbetter.

BCYC will host the SCYA Midwinter Regatta, two days of windward/leeward racing for the Harbor 20 and Thistle fleets. The Bogart Series, to Avalon and back, features NO mark roundings–justa26-milesailtrimmingexercise.Asalways,trophies will be awarded in Avalon and back at the club.

The Lorin Weiss Series and the Harbor 20 Tune-up will continue unchanged featuring five races each day with windward/leeward mark roundings. Harbor 20 racers are a key component of BCYC racing and we certainly enjoy their camaraderie both on the water and at the post-race celebrations.

Of course, we will run Taco Tuesdays again! We always aim forbiggerandbetter. So,expectgreatracing, greatfood, greatraffles and great fun!

In 2018, we are going to resurrect the Around the Island Race but with a course around the mid-channel oil islands. This is a 27-mile sprint around Edith, Ellen-Elly and Eureka…and is in direct response to our survey…racers asked for one weekend race to Catalina and one long race day.

Get ready for the inaugural running of the Wild Sailing Regatta, July-October. Director Rhonda Tolar is planning the party portion of the event, so you know it will be awesome! We will end the year with the Hot Rum Series…two races each day, pirate-themed parties and a lot of fun.

As you can see, 2018 will have races for everyone. Come be part of the action.
