FROM THE DESK OF OUR PRINCIPAL

College 5-9 Athletics It was a delight to attend the first ever Year 5-9 Athletics held at the Athletics Track, Hoppers Lane. The event was exceptionally well organised with many students in charge of activities and House colours proudly displayed along with ribbons to show the success of our star athletes and those enjoying doing their Personal Best! Well done to Andrew Maki and his team of organisers for making this event so successful. You Tube Hack Just last week it has come to my attention that at home some students have experienced some disturbing images that have appeared whilst using YouTube. I urge you to be vigilant when allowing your children to access such sites. It really does mean that you need to supervise your children when they are using technology. Mobile Phones at School I do understand that many of you wish for your child to bring a mobile phone to school. We do have some conditions that need to be met though and in simple terms the phone is the responsibility of the child and must not be a distraction to learning. Teachers have the responsibility to take the phone if a student is using the phone inappropriately and in some instances we would contact you to collect the phone. Generally though if a phone was taken from a student it would be returned at the end of the school day. Student Leaders Badges We have several very proud students who have secured leadership positions at our College. As is our usual practice we invite the Mayor of Wyndham to attend a special Assembly where the badges are presented and photos are taken. Due to the availability of the Mayor this Assembly will be held on Friday the 22nd of March at 9am at Derrimut Heath and 10am at the Tarneit campus. Value- March-Respect The College Value that we will be teaching in March and April is Respect. There will be a focus on treating others with consideration to their point of view and always demonstrating manners and courtesy as a means of being a socially acceptable person. Our slogan is “Marching on with Manners”. You can help by talking about respectful behaviour and what it looks and feels like at home, with friends and with significant adults. As adults I do believe that we must always model respectful behaviour if we are to receive it from children. From time to time we have situations whereby children use comments that are offensive because they are racist and please be aware that we do not tolerate racism in any form at our College. We are proud to have cultural diversity and have children from over 60 different language groups all happily mixing, learning and playing together. We understand that our hearts and brains are in fact the same colour regardless of the colour of our skin and I expect that our thinking and feelings will always reflect our values of tolerance and respect for all. College Council Elections The Election for the College Council for 2019/20 is now completed and I am pleased to report that the following people have been elected as a result of the nomination process recently completed: Nick Keating and Helen Voysey as staff representatives, Kirtan Shah, Marwa Melhem as Student representatives, Angela Smith, Samantha Foster, Rachel Van Boven as Parent representatives. These join Andrea Mansell, Simone Lockwood Bec Breust, Shawn Lynch, Joanne Harrison, Katie Franks and Jason Vandy, along with Jenny Shaw as Minute Secretary and myself as Executive Officer, as your College Council. I appreciate the time and effort that the members of the College Council give to support your children and all members of the Baden Powell Community. They have a responsible role in terms of governance and setting policy and future direction. I would like to thank Chris Holder and Jackie McGuinness who served on the College Council during the last year.

Annual General Meeting We have the Annual General Meeting of the College Council to be held on Tuesday the 26th of March at 6:30 pm in the staffroom at Derrimut Heath and this follows the final meeting of the Council for the 2018/19 year. At this time a Draft Annual Report will be presented for consideration. Then you will have the opportunity before the College Council in May to attend a Public Meeting to discuss the Annual Report. A copy of the report will then be added to our Web Page. Staff Car Park I continue to write about access to the Staff Car Park at both schools and in this case I am concerned about the number of children who walk through the car parks at the start and the end of the day. Someone will be hit by a car entering or leaving the Car Park, so please make sure that your children DO NOT walk through the car parks. From 7:30 am to 5:30pm the parking places must be available for staff members and for those parking spaces where 24 access is required. I ask that you respect that as at any given time staff members are travelling to and from both schools and indeed working at weekends. I appreciate the challenges in parking around our schools but parking in bus stop and other restricted areas is not a good idea and could result in you being fined!

Wyndham Rotary Fun Run My Rotary Club, Wyndham Rotary conducts an annual Fun Run / Walk at Chirnside Park where the proceeds now go to The Mercy Werribee Hospital. This year the Fun Run is to be held on Sunday the 17th of March and as a College we are encouraging all of you to enter. You can enter on line using this link. www.wyndhamfunrun.org

OLIVIE by London Marsh in DMA

Olivie is a very popular 18 year old. She walks into the cafeteria and has her own table with her friends. When they walk down the hallway everyone makes way for them.

Everyone loves her hair and her clothes, and don’t forget her makeup.

She has silky blonde hair and dark brown eyes. She wears ripped jeans, a silky white top and gorgeous boots. Her makeup is glorious and amazing.

She wakes at 6am, and takes 3 hours to get ready. Her school starts at 10am and finishes

at 3pm. But at home no one knows how she feels. Her parents are fighting and are getting a divorce. Everyone thinks she has the best life but not always.

THE YEAR 7 VISUAL ARTS STUDENTS STUDIED JAPANESE NOTANS

The year 7 Visual Arts students studied Japanese Notans and was able to present a pleasing composition using space, lines and shapes. The term Notan refers to the balance of light and dark, using positive and negative space. Students were able to expand the kinder square by designing patterns to cut and reflect. They used critical thinking and mathematical skills, along with the knowledge of elements of art, taught in class to design their abstract image.

Baden Powell College breakfast is on every Tuesday and Thursday morning at both campuses. Your child can enjoy cereal, muesli, baked beans, (oats in winter), toast and/or fruit salad. We sincerely thank our sponsors for their ongoing support. Without the support of the magnificent Let’s Feed, Reliance, Harmony Residential, Pronto Earthworks and Foodbank, we would not have been able to provide for the many students who enjoy breakfast at school.
