LIBERTY The Pre-Tech CareerExploration Program is just one ofmany offered through Sullivan Coun-ty BOCES and its Career and Techni-cal Education Center and aims toprepare students for both college anda new career.

This past spring, BOCES Pre-Techstudents and faculty unveiledBOCES very first wind turbine at theRubin Pollack Education Center onFerndale-Loomis Road.

This is our prize... like our flag onMt. Suribachi saying Were here, were technical, were gonna giveyour students the best educationthey can possibly get, said SullivanBOCES instructor Patrick Killian ofthe turbine project.

And according to Killian, the verytower that holds the turbine carriesquite a bit of historical significance,as his parents, Leon and Jeanne Kil-lian, first installed the tower onRevonah Hill in Liberty back in 1962

where it handled thousands of callsfor public safety, according to Kil-lian.

Wind turbine is leading edge of BOCES program

    Pre-Tech at BOCESThe BOCES Pre-Tech Program is a 9th & 10th

grade credit bearing, career exploration programwherein students gain a solid foundation of basicskills in multiple vocational areas while alsomanaging a student-run business. The programmirrors the changes in the world and requires thestudent to take a different approach in respond-ing to todays problems, through the use of inno-vation, technology, and good old-fashionedAmerican Ingenuity. This is accomplished with-out requiring the extensive use of high-tech,expensive equipment, only the use of innovation.

The STEM component offers a vast array ofrenewable energy practices, as well as alterna-tive food production projects. Each projectrequires the student to engage in active problem-solving using higher-order thinking skills. Fur-thermore, the program challenges the student tobuild knowledge in viable energy and food pro-duction alternatives.

George Cooke, Commissioner ofJurors, Representatives from theHead Start program, EPIC (Every Per-son Influences Children), parentsand community members also par-ticipated in the discussion, whichexplored how school districts, com-munity organizations and parentscan work together to help close theachievement gap among students.

The achievement gap is a collec-tive problem; if we dont work in thesame direction, we arent giving ourkids the chance to participate in the21st century workforce, said Finn.

Chancellor Tisch provided herthoughts on how New York States stu-dents are faring on a national level.

When we look at our students testscores, we need to compare them tothe National Assessment of Educa-tional Progress (NAEP) the goldstandard. New York State joined the

Common Core testing in the firstplace because of what the NAEPshowed us, said Tisch. The old testswere not indicative of the actual suc-cess of our children.

Principal Johnson-Fields offeredher ideas for a Parent University, acollaboration of the school district, community, Head Start, EPIC, familymembers, and more.

This meeting was the first in aneffort to identify ways of bringingparties together to increase parentengagement in the schools. Addition-al meetings and discussions will beheld in the future.

ELDRED When the Eldred Boardof Education revealed its Five YearCapital Facilities Plan thats going tocost the District $5,237,295, somemembers of the community and theBoard of Education raised questions.Of that figure, $2,431,370 would bespent at George Ross Mackenzie ESand $2,805,925 at the Junior/SeniorHigh School.

The figure includes upgrades andimprovements for athletic facilities, which District Superintendent RobertDufour addressed: There are certainthings that must be done for safety andsecurity purposes. For example, for

the past 18 months, and you canextend that as far back as the last fouryears, there has been a consistentquestion asked about our athleticfacilities here, what was going to bedone about that and why wasnt itdone in the last project. I dont knowwhy it wasnt done in the last project, that pre-dates me and that pre-datesmy predecessor.

Athletic coaches and members of thecommunity have been concernedabout the safety of the fields, whichseem to disintegrate and settle down.Speakers blamed the upgrades donesome 20 years ago, noting thatdrainage was not taken into accountcorrectly.

12S BACK TO SCHOOL SULLIVAN COUNTY DEMOCRAT AUGUST, 2014

Superintendent Robert Dufour, second from left, got animated talking about the need forsports upgrades. At left is District Clerk Bonnie Robertson, and to Dafours left are Board ofEducation members Douglas Reiser and Amador Laput.

Brian Siegel of Barryville (with hands raised) brought up questions about the large capitalexpenditure plan, warning at some point you're going to have to ask for more.

  • Dufour concurred, What was builtin 1995 took no notice of drainage. Itsgot to be ripped up, and its got to bedone correctly.

He continued, Right now we havetwo soccer fields for use. Were lookingto turn these into multi-purpose soft-ball and soccer fields. This would beachieved by movable fencing, heexplained.

In response to the communitys con-cerns, he said, I asked... to look intothese things, and what the cost wouldbe. There will be a vote.

Brian Siegel, a Barryville residentwith kids in the school system asked,Is there flexibility? Can you be for onesection, and against another?

Dufour replied, We need to priori-tize, thats why were here. Were lookingfor input. Siegel then inquired aboutthe time frame, and was told the boardis hoping to finalize its plans in the nextmeeting or two, and put it to public ref-erendum soon after that.

Dufour explained the process,There will be a public meeting to dis-cuss whats happening. Then theboard will decide what they put up forreferendum, and once they decide, wehave to provide 30 days noticerequired by law.

Looking at the thick Five Year Planhandout, Siegel continued, Theres alot of information here, and Ill have tolook at it. The first thought from some-one from the public, and I have threekids in the school here its a wonder-ful school, my kids have been here for13 years. However, my first thought isits a lot of money, and you need to bevery conservative what you ask taxpay-ers for. At some point, youre going tohave to ask for more, and its going tocome [at the expense of] educationalprograms, staffing, things like that thatare very important as well so we needto be very careful what we ask for.

Board member Carol Bliefernichinquired, These numbers that youhave, are they medium, high, or lownumbers? Where did you get thesenumbers?

They are designed to be in the mid-dle, plan presenter Joe Tola fromSavin Engineers of Pleasantvilleexplained.

Debbie Jennings asked about theexpenditure for generators in the plan, noting the figure of $700,000.

Dufour replied, If theres an evacua-tion in case of major disaster, we wantto get the price of what it would cost tohave the generators in place.

Jennings insisted it was a lot of

money, and Tola concurred, We coulddownsize on the generators.

Paul Whitfield, who came to themeeting with his daughter, askedabout the softball field design becauseshe plays varsity softball, and was toldremovable fence would make the fieldconfirm.

Dufour summarized the plans: Itsup to the board. Were discussing thework that needs to be done, thefinancing that needs to be done, andcoordination of what needs to bedone. If they decide to put it to vote, then thats going to be done.

Copies of the plan are available onecs.schoolwires.com

Back-to-school spending cantake its toll on the family budg-et, with parents paying consid-erable cash for clothes, backpacksand other must-haves. The NationalRetail Foundation expects consumersto spend about $74.9 billion this yearto send their children and college stu-dents back to school, up 12 percentsince 2013.

Back-to-school spend-ing is second only to theholidays, and the out-lay is higher andhigher each year, said Mike Sulli-van, director ofeducation forTake ChargeAmerica, anational non-profit creditcounseling anddebt managementagency. Retailerspush hard in thesummer months, and

school budget cuts have shifted thecost of supplies to families, but savvyparents can save money without

skimping on necessities.Sullivan offers eight tips forcutting costs on back-to-

    school shopping:Take stock: Supply

lists often call for scis-sors, rulers, pencils andother items peoplealready have at home.Parents can savemoney by taking stockof what they have

    before buying newsupplies.

Stick to the list: Teachers sup-ply lists have become more exten-

sive and expensive soparents are wise to stick tothe list and avoid impulsepurchases.

Comparison shop: Dol-lar stores, big-box retail-ers and office supplystores offer deep dis-counts on many schoolessentials. Parents cansave money by seekingout the best prices andstocking up on items chil-dren use throughout the year.

Clip coupons: Many websitespublish coupons on back-to-schoolclothing and supplies. Parents alsocan find their childrens favoritebrands on Facebook and Twitter forspecial coupons available only to fol-lowers.

Wait to buy: Just like holiday shop-ping, retailers often discount pricesafter the rush. Parents can purchasesome items after Labor Day to reapsavings.

    Shop or swap second-hand: Cloth-

ing swaps are a popular choice toexchange gently used cloth-ing. Additionally, second-

    hand retail shops,Craigslist and eBay

are good options forfinding trendy andbrand-name gear ata fraction of the

    cost.Shop tax-free:

Many states offer tax-free shopping days dur-

ing back-to-school sea-sons. Find out if your state is

participating, and buy your big-ticketitems then.

Include kids in the process: Manyparents give their kids a budget forclothing and necessities. Kids whohave to choose between blowing thebudget on pricey items or stretchingtheir dollars with sensible purchaseswill learn a powerful lesson about thevalue of money.

Get a share of scholarships galore Off to college. Is your student protected?GLENMONT As college students

and their families prepare for thebeginning of the school year, insur-ance considerations should be at thetop of their college checklist, says theProfessional Insurance Agents of NewYork State Inc. (PIANY). The tradeassociation that represents agentsacross the state reminds students andtheir parents to contact their insur-ance agent to verify the specifics oftheir policies and educate themselvesabout any coverage limitations. Youmay need to purchase additional cov-erage for your child's possessions, depending on where your child willlive at college.

Check your homeowners policy tosee if the items your child is taking tocollege are covered in case they aredamaged or stolen, says Alan Plafker,CPIA, president of PIANY. Prepareand maintain a list of possessionssuch as computers, televisions, stere-os, cameras and jewelry, including theoriginal cost and their purchase date.

Students living on campus may be

protected by their parents' home-owners policy, as long as the studentmaintains residency in the parents'household. Some insurers expresslydefine what residency means intheir policy, but many insurers leaveroom for interpretation. Before aclaim occurs, be sure to find out whatcriteria your insurer uses to deter-mine whether your student child isstill a resident of your household.

College students renting an off-campus apartment or house whileaway at school should consider pur-chasing a renters policy. In order toget the best protection, choosing ascheduled coverage option oftenmakes sense for high-value posses-sions, such as computers, musicalinstruments and jewelry.

Auto insurance is another consider-ation for college-bound kids. If yourchild is attending school more than100 miles from home without custodyof a household vehicle, you may beeligible for a reduction in your autoinsurance premiums.

The gift of life for Bryce

Neversink youth, 8, gets heart tra

    BY JEANNE SAGER

    NEVERSINK The

    Tues-

    day night when life

    changed

    for the Rogerson fa

    mily was

    just like any other.

    With a planned tw

    o-hour

    delay for the T

    ri-Valley

    School District the

    next day,

    8-year-old Bryce an

    d 5-year-

    old Bryan had been

    given a

pass to stay up late a

    nd watch

    a movie together.

    Sixteen-

    year-old Emily w

    as doing

    what teenagers d

    o on a

    school night. Dad

    Brian was

    on a hunting trip in

    Alabama,

    so mom Nicole was

    snuggling

    in bed, watching T

    V by her-

    self. And then

    the phone rang.

    It was a pediatri

    c nurse

    familiar with littl

    e Bryces

    congenital heart c

    ondition.

    After nearly three

    years on

    the transplant list, t

    here was

    a heart waiting for B

    ryce.

    I said Are you k

    idding

    me? Nicole reca

    lls. I was

    literally skipping

    up and

    down the hallway!

It was a call the Ro

    gersons

    werent sure wo

    uld ever

    come. Bryce was

    diagnosed

    with hypoplastic

    left heart

    syndrome (HLHS)

    before he

    was even born, afte

    r a routine

    ultrasound at 18

    weeks

    picked up an

    anomaly.

    HLHS a syndrom

    e in which

the left side of a ch

    ild's heart

    was underdevelope

    d is one

    of the three most

    common

    heart issues a child

    can be

    born with, but it ca

    n be fatal

    if left untreated.

    To increase the

    Bryces

    chances, Nicole un

    derwent

    in utero surgery a

    t just 26

    weeks pregnant to o

    pen up a

    hole in his heart

    to allow

    blood to flow prop

    erly and

    help him develop

    in the

    womb. Ten days aft

    er he was

    born in February 20

    05, Bryce

    underwent his fir

    st open

    heart surgery. At 8 m

    onths, he

    had another, and in

    October

    of 2008, a third o

    pen heart

    surgery.

    But in 2010 came

    a devas-

    tating diagnosis. B

    ryce had

    developed plastic br

    onchitis,

    a condition of the lu

    ngs most

    common in cysti

    c fibrosis

    patients. Rubbery

    chunks of

    mucus had begun

    develop-

    ing in his lungs, m

    aking him

    struggle to breathe

    . Although

    the issue presents its

    elf in the

    lungs, doctors put

    the blame

    on his heart, which

    pumps

    oxygenated blood

    to the

    lungs. By 2011,

    doctors told the

    Rogersons their be

    st choice

    would be to put Br

    yce on the

    transplant list for

    a heart. A

    new heart, they to

    ld them,

    would take pressur

    e off the

    lungs and hopefu

    lly allow

    them to heal thems

    elves.

    On March 25, 2011

    , Bryce

    was added to the t

    ransplant

    list with whats know

    n as 1B

    status, the second

    from the

    top. At the time, do

    ctors told

    the Rogersons th

    at listing

    him at 1A the hig

    hest and

    most needy status

    would

    require Bryce to wai

    t in a hos-

    pital for a heart to

    be found.

    But with Bryce abl

    e to take

    his medication at h

    ome, the

    Rogersons opted to

    keep him

    in Neversink, to all

    ow him to

    continue attendin

    g school

    and be with his fam

    ily.

    They were told i

    t would

    take six months to

    a year to

    find him a heart.

    On June 25, 2013

    , more
