The FBI Report Father Bob Irish, Pastor 669-8335 ext. 11 [email protected]

This year during the Lenten season, plan on spending some quiet time with our Lord. Each Friday, during Lent, Eucharistic Adoration will be held in the Worship space from 9:00AM—4:00PM.

Spending time before the Blessed Sacrament, in prayer and devotion, is exactly the same as spending time before the living God. Adoration occurs whenever someone kneels in front of the tabernacle that contains the Blessed Sacrament, genuflects toward the tabernacle, bows before receiving the Eucharist at Mass or, in a more focused way, when the Blessed Sacrament is exposed for adoration.

You can just walk in during those hours or sign up at the white boards in the gathering space. Either way, come in and sit with the Lord. Adoration of the Cross The dramatic unveiling and adoration of the Cross, which was introduced into the Latin Liturgy in the seventh or eighth century, had its origin in the Church of Jerusalem. The Peregrinatio Sylviae" (the real name is Etheria) contains a description of the ceremony as it took place in Jerusalem towards the close of the fourth century. Then a chair is placed for the Bishop in Golgotha behind the Cross... a table covered with a linen cloth is placed before him; the Deacons stand around the table, and a silver-gilt casket is brought in which is the wood of the holy Cross. The casket is opened and (the wood) is taken out, and both the wood of the Cross and the Title are placed upon the table. Now, when it has been put upon the table, the Bishop, as he sits, holds the extremities of the sacred wood firmly in his hands, while the Deacons who stand around guard it. It is guarded thus because the custom is that the people, both faithful and catechumens, come one by one and, bowing down at the table, kiss the sacred wood and pass on. (Duchesne, tr. McClure, 564) Our present ceremony (which is held on Good Friday) is an obvious development of this, the manner of worshipping the True Cross on Good Friday observed at Jerusalem. The Cross is processed in by the Deacon and Priest and raising it three times, the Deacon sings three times the "Ecce lignum Crucis", etc. (Behold the wood of the Cross on which hung the salvation of the world), to which the choir/congregations answers, each time, "Venite adoremus" (Come let us adore).

Please note that on Good Friday, the Stations of the Cross will NOT be held at 3:00PM as previously scheduled. The Adoration of the Cross will be the only service, that day, beginning 7:00PM.

Music Ministries Patrick Paddock, Director

669-8335 ext. 20 [email protected]

Greeting Parishioners,

We have begun this year’s journey of Lent. Lent is one of my favorite seasons in the Church Year. A time to hone in on prayer, sacrifice and giving alms. Blanca and I started our Lenten sacrifice a week early with a six week exercise and eating regiment. As one who has a love for cookies and other delicious goodies, no sweets until Easter. Sacrificing something is not always easy. It is much easier to go out to a restaurant for dinner than to cook at home. What comes after the cooking…the clean-up! I have done my fair share of grocery shopping, cooking and cleaning in the last two weeks. Yes it takes time, but it also has saved us money. Our sacrifice has already started to bare some fruits…savings from not eating out, muscle development and some weight loss. Three wonderful results from sticking to the strict routine. What does that have to do with Music Ministry? The principle behind sacrificing and giving back. The truth is that we have a lot of musical talent in our parish. One way you can give back is to sing louder from your seat or pew. In music we have six levels of dynamics (volume)…pianissimo – very soft; piano – soft; mezzo piano – medium soft; mezzo forte – medium loud; forte – loud; and fortissimo – very loud. Where does your singing volume fit within those six dynamics? The truth is that Music Ministry begins with lifting up our voices from the pews and chairs and filling our worship space with beautiful melodies of sacred music.

Now close your eyes and imagine what 300+ voices sounds like singing at a forte dynamic? A choir of angels and saints! The good news is that it does not stop there. Perhaps this Lent is the time to sacrifice your chair or pew for the Music Ministry area. Give back through service as a Cantor/Psalmist, share your voice by being a part of the Triduum Choir or play your instrument with our Praise Band.

The success of Music Ministry depends on your level of sacrifice and giving back. I look forward to hearing from you. See you in Church! Patrick

Next Sunday’s Scriptures A reflection on the readings for Mass next Sunday, February 25

God’s love for us is limitless. Today, we hear the familiar passage from Saint Paul when he says, If God is for us, who can be against us? Since we have been called by name, by virtue of our baptism, we know that we are God’s children; we are his instruments in the world. In the first reading, Genesis 22:1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18, Abraham is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice of surrendering his son to the Lord. Saint Paul reminds the Romans, 8:31b-34, that having God with them will allow them to face any challenge. In the Gospel, Mark 9:2-10, the disciples realize that Jesus is the fulfillment of the law after he is transfigured before them.

Although this is a course that is mandated for every volunteer in the church who directly works with children, it also teaches good practices for ANY ADULT to help recognize grooming techniques of child predators and how to look for signs of abuse. It is based on Catholic values but can benefit anyone of any faith in keeping children safe. This is a free event and is for adults only. Please register at www.virtus.org. We will have a simple meal because of the length and time of day. Call Mary Lippert with any questions or concerns.

Lenten Tuesday Soup and Substance Here is a new way to grow closer to Jesus this Lent. Come and share a bowl of soup with us on Tuesday nights after Mass at 6PM. Families are welcome! Invite your neighbors and friends. Each week we will have a speaker on a Lenten subject and time for discussion at your tables. Please sign up at the Parish Information Center in the gathering space or on the parish website so we can tell how much soup to make. We will also need help to serve and clean up each week and you can sign up for that too. We are looking for some soup chefs from the parish to prepare yummy soup. Contact Ginger Koester at [email protected] if you will make soup. There will be a free will offering that will be used to cover the cost of the soup ingredients and the excess will be donated to a different charity each week.

And YOU

As the church enters the Lenten season our Catechumens and candidates are going through the period of purification and enlightenment - a time when they are scrutinizing their readiness for the Easter Sacraments, eliminating things that separate them from God and engaging in deeper prayer that draws them closer to God. The liturgies during Lent are a reminder of baptism already received for the candidates for full communion in the Catholic Church along with the rest of the faithful; the catechumens who have not yet been baptized, final preparation for its reception. Lent is a time for spiritual recollection in preparation for the celebration of the paschal mystery for all of us including the catechumens and candidates.

This Sunday, the First Sunday of Lent, at the 8:30 AM Mass we celebrate the Rite of Sending the catechumens, Misty Finkbeiner and John Little to Bishop Boyea for acceptance, on our recommendation, as the Elect who have been chosen by God for Baptism at the Easter Vigil. We also celebrate the sending of our already baptized candidates for full communion Tom Townsend, Jeff Linman, Quinn Shooltz, Erica Magers, Reigan Magers and Evan Magers to the bishop for the Rite of continuing conversion and the completion of their initiation into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. They will then join catechumens and candidates from approximately one-third of the diocese at St. Thomas Aquinas Church at 3 PM for the Bishop’s blessings. We ask you to pray for all of the catechumens and candidates throughout the world who are preparing to become Catholic at the Easter Vigil. To sign up for free access to FORMED just use this web address stjudedewitt.formed.org. Subsequent visits to FORMED.org will take you directly to the content since your registration data is on file. Adults and teens will appreciate My Beloved Son a set of meditations for Lent by Bishop Robert Barron. Find it under Listen, then scroll down to Prayer and click on the right side until you come to this item. Another audio choice especially for Lent is The Way of The Cross. You can listen to this prayer at home, on your commute or anywhere you find the time to enrich your prayer during Lent to better unite yourself to the Passion of Christ. Find it near the audio, My Beloved Son. Children will enjoy the video from the Brother Francis series - The Rosary, A Special Way to Pray. St. Francis Prayer Center is Thankful!

"THANK YOU" to everyone who helped with our Thanksgiving baskets. Those words hardly seem enough but they are sincerely felt. Last year we helped 38 families -- this year we were able to help about 50. That was possible only with the help of your wonderful donations. The Prayer Center and the families in our area are very grateful.

I truly enjoy the season of Lent. That may sound a little strange. Lent comes at a time here in Michigan when we are in the grips of winter, its cold and darkness. I find myself

yearning for the warmth of spring with its longer days of sunlight and warmer, southern breezes. However, Lent reminds me that prior to the celebration of Easter, I will endure the challenges of Good Friday. Lent is my time for quiet reflection on where my life has been and where it is going. How is my relationship with God and the people I love? Is there someone that I have hurt that I need to ask for forgiveness? Am I a better person today then I was one year ago? How can I become that better person? Yes, I will struggle with temptation and possibly even play the counting game that Sunday’s during Lent are an oasis in the desert where it is acceptable to give into selfish desires. Nonetheless, I view Lent as a gift from God. It affords all of us the opportunity to slow down and look toward God, instead of careening at break neck speed in the world around us, unsure of where we are going. As the people of God all of us need to be reminded that our short life on this earth is not our destination. We are a people of hope, a people of the promise of salvation. Our destination is eternal life with God. Please join with me during this Lenten season, afford yourself the time to slow down, listen to the voice of the Spirit, and be prepared to respond to God’s call with a conversion of heart.
