Digital Command Control (DCC) isopening new frontiers for modelrailroaders, providing more realisticoperations on any layout. For manymodelers however, choosing a startersystem can be the most difficult part ofgetting started.

Answering the need for a system that’seasy to use, affordable and incorporatesthe latest technology, Bachmann hasteamed with Lenz to produce the newEZ-Command System for HO scale.

Designed for modelers of any skilllevel, the system provides 128-step speed control for smoothperformance, with independent control of lighting and directionfor multiple locos. Unlike some starter systems, EZ-Command

features one-button, main trackprogramming and plug-in wiring tomake getting started quick and easy.And, it’s compatible with all DC andDCC systems.

The basic starter set (#160-44902)includes a Control Center, WallTransformer and Plug-In Wire.Modelers who are just getting startedcan choose three complete sets (#160-44904 - ATSF, #160-44905 – Chessieor #160-44906 - NS) that include adecoder-equipped GP40 diesel.

A new series of decoder-equipped, ready-to-run FT-A and Bunit diesels will also be available separately to expandoperations.

With plenty of covered hoppers,aggregate hoppers and box carscoming and going, the cementindustry is an important source oftraffic for many railroads. TheValley Cement kit makes addingthis rail-intensive business to yourHO layout easy.

Where There’s Limestone,There’s Cement This light-colored rock is theprimary component of cement.While it’s one of the mostabundant minerals, cement plantsare traditionally located wherelarge deposits are close to thesurface. That’s why there arenotable clusters of plants insouthern California, northernOhio and Pennsylvania’s “CementBelt.” Of course, there are manyother plants across the continent.

What Goes In...Cement plants consume carloadsof materials for production andpower. Nearby quarries supplythe stone to crushers like GlacierGravel Co. (933-3062, $39.98,sold separately) which, in turn,supply the plant via conveyor, railor truck. Other materials such asfly ash, sand, iron ore, bauxiteand other additives used tofacilitate chemical reactions in thekiln arrive by rail or truck. Coal-fired plants receive coal in openhoppers.

Inside the reinforced walls of the bulk materials building,ingredients are fed onto aconveyor into the blending andproportioning building. There,materials are ground into finepowder, analyzed, blended andfed into the rotary kiln. Theslanted rotating kiln is the heartof the process: the mixture isheated until it becomes partiallymolten and chemically forms intolittle balls called “clinker.” Theclinker enters the coolingbuilding, where it’s ground intopowdered cement.

...Must Come OutA conveyor moves powderedcement to the bulk storage siloswhere it’s loaded into coveredhoppers or trucks. Inside theloading tunnel, the track isembedded in pavement so truckscan use the facility. Add thisdetail with the Street TrackInserts kit (933-3140, $15.98,sold separately). At some plants,especially before the 1970s,pneumatic piping or anotherconveyor routed some cementinto a bagging house where sackswere filled and loaded into boxcars or trucks.

Add Cement to your SceneryValley Cement makes a greatmajor industry for any layout. Onyour pike, place it next to a

quarry with the Glacier GravelCo. crusher as shown in theaccompanying track plan. But, ifyou desire added operationalpossibilities, you can run cars oflimestone from a distant quarryinto the plant and unload them atthe Bulk Transfer Conveyor (933-3519, $29.98, sold separately). Ifyou decide to place GlacierGravel Co. next to the plant,

you’ll have to add either the BeltConveyors (933-3149, $9.98) orthe Modern Conveyors (933-3518, $12.98) sloping from thebase of the crusher up to thestockpiles.

In addition to the loading silotrack, you’ll also need anunloading track with a BulkTransfer Conveyor if you want to

simulate a coal-fired plant. A gasor oil-fired plant would have alarge fuel storage tank on thegrounds. In addition, you’ll needa couple of tracks for car storage.With all the action, many plantshave a switcher for moving cars.

Some cement plants have, or had,rail-served bagging houses. Thisbuilding is an easy addition toyour scene using the GoldenValley Canning Co. kit (933-3018, $26.98, sold separately).The building features both freightcar and truck docks. Simply omitthe decals and the rooftop watertank. Use the boiler house as acompressor house with pipingcoming from the storage silos.

Make it Look RealCement plants are unique amongfactories because there’s exteriormovement—the huge kiln rotates

Finally, a word about weathering.Cement plants are dusty places—no plant would be completewithout a fine coating of lightgray dust over everything fromthe rooftops to the trees along theperimeter of the grounds (and insome cases the rooftops ofdownwind structures). On somestructures, the dust has caked upenough to form a crust. Theprototype photo should give youan idea of how to weather yourmodel.

Santa Fe’s sleek silver “SuperChief” set the gold standard forpassenger comfort and service.Often touted as the “Train of theStars,” it was the way forHollywood’s elite to travelbetween Chicago and LosAngeles. This legendary all-Pullman streamliner sweptpassengers across the Santa Fe’smainline in a blistering 39-3/4hours. With its red-and-silver“Warbonnet” locomotivesheading up a shiny stainless steelconsist, the “Super Chief” wasperhaps the most recognizabletrain in the world. Not only did it

carry passengers; Santa Fe’s prideand reputation for excellence rodealong on each and every trip.

Always the ChiefSanta Fe folks knew theirrailroad’s public image was builton stellar passenger service. Evenas other railroads were down-grading and terminating theirtrains, Santa Fe remaineddedicated to its fleet of “Chiefs”;some even received new rollingstock and locos as late as the1960s.

When the railroad reluctantlyjoined Amtrak® in 1971, it

retained the rights to the “SuperChief” and other “Chief” trainnames, but allowed Amtrak to usethem—as long as it maintainedthe levels of quality built on theSanta Fe name. Unfortunately,Amtrak’s early service goals wereless lofty and Santa Fe revokedits permission to use any “Chief”name by 1974.

But the tradition of “Super Chief”excellence lived on long after thelast passenger was carried. In1989, Santa Fe looked back to its“Super Chief” image, likening itto its first-class freight service.The road even produced a videofeaturing a re-created “SuperChief” headed by restored F-unitsfrom the California State RailroadMuseum and hauling “Regal”

series 4-4-2 sleepers from itsbusiness fleet.
