8.3 Modified Programme of Study – credit recognition into studio courses

Students who are eligible for credit recognition into studio at a particular level, but do

not qualify to be granted the full 30 credits of studio at that level, may be granted 15

credits of studio work. In this instance, two 15 credit studios are required in place of

the 30 credit studio at the same level, as outlined below.

Credit recognition will be determined on a case-by-case basis in recognition of

successful equivalent study, at the same or at higher level in the context of another

programme.

Bachelor of Architecture 8

10. Assessment

10.1 Assessment basis

All written assessments are achievement based using an 11 point grading scale.

10.2 Calculation of Course Grades

a. The final grade for a course shall be calculated from the aggregation of all

summative assessment activities according to the following table.

Table 4: Course Grades

Grade Percentage Result

A+ 90 – 100 Pass

A 85 – 89 Pass

A- 80 – 84 Pass

B+ 75 – 79 Pass

B 70 – 74 Pass

B- 65 – 69 Pass

C+ 60 – 64 Pass

C 55 – 59 Pass

C- 50 – 54 Pass

D 40 – 49 Fail

E 0 - 39 Fail

b. In order to achieve a passing grade for a course in which there is a final

examination, all students must achieve at least 40% in the final examination for

that course.

c. Students may be awarded one of the following administrative grades for the

appropriate criteria. Table 5: Grade Criteria

Grade Meaning Criteria

CR Credit Recognition The student has applied for and been awarded a

credit recognition from another qualification.

DEF Deferred The course result has been deferred.

CTG Course Continuing For any course that runs for more than one semester

where the student has not yet completed the final

summative assessment.

DNC Did not complete A student has either withdrawn after the 75% date of

the course has been taught or not attempted a

compulsory item of assessment within a course. No

Credits earned.

W Withdrawn If a student withdraws from a course after the 10%

date of the course is completed and up to or at the

75% date of the course. No credits earned.

ES Student Exchange Where a student has completed an approved

interinstitutional exchange and it is not appropriate

for another grade to be awarded.

10.3 Conditions applying to restricted passes

a. Students may be awarded a restricted pass in a course that was narrowly failed

and where there is evidence that marginal failure is compensated by good

overall performance.

Bachelor of Architecture 9

b. Courses in which restricted passes are granted will not serve as pre-requisites

unless approval for such an award is authorised by the relevant academic

committee.

10.4 Resits and Resubmissions

Students who narrowly fail a course in which there is only one summative

assessment event are entitled to resit the assessment event at the discretion of the

relevant Academic Authority, and attain a maximum pass grade of C-.

10.5 Carry over Coursework Marks

a. Where a student is required to repeat a course, permission may be granted to

carry over an assignment mark for that course (excluding exam marks and

Design Studio projects). Such approval will be at the discretion of the relevant

Academic Authority and where given, will be limited to assignments done in the

previous academic year, and where passing grades for the assignment are B- or

higher.

b. Students should submit their request to carry over Coursework marks in writing

to within 4 weeks from the commencement of the course.

10.6 Re-enrolment

a. A student may re-enrol in a course that she/he has successfully completed in

order to achieve a higher grade.

b. A student who has not passed a course in his/her second time enrolment is

required the permission of the relevant academic committee if he/she wants to

enrol in the same course for the third time.

11. Transitional Arrangements

These transitional arrangements cater for those students who were admitted into the

Bachelor of Architecture Programme in 2007 and then subsequently transferred to

the BAS programme.

11.1 BArch – 2007 admissions
