INTRODUCINGME IN THE WORLD

LEARNING THE IMPORTANCE OF BUILDINGSPullman, Washington - hot summers, frigid winters, rural seclusion Philippines as a child University of Oregon, 2006-2011 Study abroad in Vancouver, B.C., Spring 2010 Chicago, 2011-2013 Pacific coast of the Olympic Peninsula, Spring 2009

EXPOSURE TO INTERNATIONAL CULTURES DEVELOPING DESIGNER URBAN IMMERSION INSPIRED BY NATURE

Although unaware of architecture as a profession until high school, I've been interested in the field since childhood. I grew up in rural eastern Washington, in a small university town surrounded by farmland extending to the horizon. The region's high-desert climate brings four distinct seasons and yearly temperature swings of up to 100 degrees. This is how I first came to appreciate man's ability to build. This fascination with buildings and the ways we live on the land and within climates only grew as I traveled around North America, Europe, and Asia.

Materials on Display Steel Moment Frame Stiffens existing building to today’s more stringent seismic code requirements.Timber Sequestered carbon. Locally abundant.Concrete Braces the timber frame. Recycled from deconstructed roof and site paving.

Enclosure Improved New curtainwalls wrap the existing jalousie window enclosure.

The spaces between the original and new enclosures are inhabitable, creating atria out of the double-skinned walls.

Ideas on Display An archive gallery displaying student work creates a new corner at the intersection of the main mall and Artwalk pedestrian thoroughfares.

All entries lead to the central atrium workspace, where project reviews are shared with the public.

SHARING THROUGH COLLABORATIVE WORK ENVIRONMENTS, and through public visibility of faculty and student work.

CONSTRUCTION IS REVEALED. The building itself is a teaching tool for students.

DAYLIGHT PROVIDES MAIN LIGHTING SUPPLY to reduce energy-use for electric lights.

AIR LEAKAGE PROBLEM RESOLVEDby adding a second skin.

Daylighting Preserved Atria light slots between the original building and additions preserve the quality day lighting of existing conditions.

Skinny floor plates reduce electric-light dependency in new construction.

This project doubles the facility’s floor area.

The existing architecture school is retained to reduce material use.

Vancouver’s famed Granville Island boasts a heavily visited public market. The island’s management wants similar public activity to occur on the quiet east-side of the island. A barbell scheme has been proposed, with site 73 anchoring the east end of a pedestrian retail alley. With the resident art school considering moving to a new location in the city, this scheme proposes a replacement tenant: the Vancouver Film School--which could benefit from consolidating to one campus location. A new building would be constructed at site 73. Student housing, four food venues, three movie screens, and a gallery displaying students’ work would draw the activity Granville Island’s east end lacks.

Public functions draw visitor activity to the east end of the island.Theaters and Gallery Restaurant Student Housing Admin Offices Residents and office workers provide the island with activity 24/7.

Apartments are single-loaded along outdoor corridors, saving energy by reducing conditioned space and allowing cross ventilation.

Construction consists of a concrete base with steel frame for the top three floors. Study models were used to determine the best building form for its context.

A cavity separates the two structural systems preventing noise transfer between the theaters and apartments. It is also a thermal zone used to assist passive heating and cooling.

New retail spaces replace empty warehouses to complete the retail alley.

The kinetic roof forms a sculptural gateway linking each end of the “barbell” activity scheme.

Rain sensors activate a motor, driving the main arms up a curved rack. The motor also drives a gear and chain system, rolling the canopy forward along the structural arms to keep shoppers dry and happy.

Modelled in Solidworks. Designed in collaboration with Wen Han, Emily Carr Industrial Design student.

Spring 2009

The atrium, daylit from its roof and north-facing wall, rewards students and faculty with informal gathering places that help foster discussion and provide a sense of community.

In this studio entitled “21st Century Classicism,” the ways in which buildings convey their purpose to the public were studied.

For this community college downtown satellite, dressing the facade with classical themes conveys educational importance.

The existing building to be replaced lacks gathering space, resulting in students leaving the building inbetween classes.

A piazza-like atrium space provides a place to congregate.
