of gratitude, we are including for the first time our financial donor list. For these who gave so generously in 2016, I offer my personal thanks on behalf of the BACN Board, Staff and the Neighbors we serve. Bless you for your help in this important work!

Gerri VanAntwerp, Executive Director

Dear Friends,Reflecting on Benzie Area Christian Neighbors (BACN) in 2016, the feeling that most quickly surfaces is gratitude. I’m so grateful for:

• The steadfast community support that allowed Neighbors to help Neighbors

• Neighbor needs being met despite some financial challenges

• The way in which our community’s young people stepped up to help those in need

• Our volunteers, who gave such kind and compassionate service

• A hard-working Board of Directors who prioritized BACN’s mission

• Community partners who worked with us to identify needs and provide services

• The participants who stepped up to participate in the Facility Feasibility Study

• The Tuesday food pantry volunteers, who sometimes sang as they worked

• The concrete evidence of humanity’s goodness, even in the midst of tumultuous times

Through this 2016 annual report, we’re offering our donors a financial and programmatic recap of the year. In the spirit

The Impact of In-KindA large percentage of BACN’s revenue is designated as in-kind. But what does that look like in relation to BACN’s services? BACN benefits from so many different sources of in-kind support– from our own volunteers’ time to donations of food and clothing. Community businesses provide much-needed, in-kind services in our facility (For example, locksmith, Ken Knapp, changed all our locks for free as a Christmas present to BACN.) These acts of kindness happen every day, and there is no way we can possibly note each one with the individual attention it deserves.

Below we are sharing a small sample of the way in-kind food donations impacts the BACN Pantry. In 2016, we gratefully accepted:

• An entire pallet of applesauce from Loy Putney Orchards

• Over 50 pounds of packaged venison after DNR officer Rebecca Hopkins and Karlin Market & Deli teamed up to pay for the processing of an illegally taken deer

• Over 400 pounds of processed pork packaged into sausages, roasts and chops, donated from ProWeb Marketing

• Over 200 pounds of grass-fed beef from Misty Acres Farm of the Grand Traverse Land Conservancy, and processing paid for by Cherry Republic

• Two entire freezers full of packaged salmon and lake trout, filleted and donated by sportsmen and women participating in the Benzie Fishing Frenzy

• Hundreds of dozens of eggs donated by area farmers

• Pallets of apples, butternut squash and other seasonal fresh produce donated from area farmers

These are but a small sampling of large individual donations–that when added to the many food drives sponsored by local schools, businesses, churches and organizations–provided nearly $263,000 worth of food in 2016. BACN paired these food donations with purchased staples through the year, to provide the well-rounded nutritional supplement needed by our Neighbor families. Our thank you is simple, yet heart-felt.

LEFT: A new shipment of apple sauce is a welcome donation to our food pantry. MIDDLE: BACN volunteers help make our food drives a big success. RIGHT: Rebecca Hopkins, one of many generous donors, helps to fill our freezer with meat.
